The evening sky was just starting to turn from the bright afternoon blue to a slightly darker one as Charlotte made her way down the sidewalk, purse slung over her shoulder. She glanced around, adjusting the few bags of clothes and accessories in her hand as she tried to decide where to go next, and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. She'd already been to a few little boutiques and found some cute things, but she was beginning to get weary of walking around and just looking at things. She supposed that, perhaps, she just wasn't in a shopping mood today. Oh, well. At least she's gotten a few good buys, right?
As she made her way past an alleyway, heading back to her car (parked a few blocks away), she caught sight of a flash of color and pattern in the shadows. Charlotte paused, frowning slightly. Was it a cat? She bit her lip, looking around, before adjusting her purse and heading into the darker alleyway. It was a strange coloration for a cat, but maybe it was dirty or something? "Here, kitty kitty! What are you doing, hm?" She smiled, peeking around a big box.
What she saw there surprised her. It certainly looked like a cat, at least mostly. There were four legs, a tail, and a pair of ears, but the thing's pelt was...strange. It undulated and twitched, flashing colors and patterns, making her pause and watch it in silence. But then she noticed the way its head turned, the way it turned all the way around until it was upside-down and smiling at her with sharp teeth. Its tail split, and she recoiled, gasping aloud. She wasn't entirely sure if she should run; it hadn't attacked her, and so she took a step back, still staring at it. Its mouth opened wide, and she expected it to mewl, but it let out a cackling laughter, mixed with a sound like bells chiming lightly. "Oh, oh my God!" Shocked, Charlotte stumbled and fell over a can, landing on her rear end as the thing - she couldn't call it a cat anymore - advanced on her, swinging its head back and forth.

It had not been a good evening.
The attacks on the UMA had been fairly regular since that first night she had shown up, and for the past month, Flora had found herself locked in grueling battles with many monsters. After defeating the largest one yet, she was still chasing down a few straggling minions and cleaning them up. It was exhausting work, especially now that there was no longer anything to keep them lingering around the museum. They had scattered, and her friends had goaded her into cleaning them up, otherwise people would die, and it would be her fault, but the work was tiring, and Flora felt awkward running around the city, let alone changing into her work uniform. It wasn't even a dress! Would she ever get to wear a dress, or even a skirt and just feel pretty? She didn't even get to as a magical superhero, or whatever she was now.
Whatever had escaped from the museum this time could be anywhere. They disguised themselves sometimes, like things from paintings or exhibits. She had seen a Venus hobbling about on a plinth, that had been a sight she wouldn't soon forget. It was worrying, troublesome that they could make themselves look so much like her friends, and she bit her lip, clutching her doloire tighter. No more. This one she was chasing down tonight was one of the last, which was a relief since the little ones didn't even make black gems, and her contract egg was getting dirty. She didn't like it to be dirty, she liked to think she took good care of things, but the thought of finding another huge monster was boneshakingly terrifying. She had barely endured the first one and its twisting mazes. At least the little ones had that advantage: she could just beat them up and be done with it.
That was one thing she was proud of, at least. Flora was quite adept at beating things up, or at least at mimicking all the action cartoons that her father made her watch on Saturday mornings and hoping. So far, it had worked out well in her favour, so long as she was brave enough to try. Sometimes that was the hardest part. She could barely look these monsters in the eye.
That was another hard part. Sometimes they had just one eye.
She had reached the Lynn District by now and was about to give up for the evening and go home before her father got too suspicious. Being in the Lynn district made her uncomfortable anyway, and she clutched at her own baggy sweatervest as she peered at the fancy dresses in the shop windows. Being a hero and patrolling the city wasn't supposed to make you feel bad about yourself, was it? She bit her lip nervously. Everyone here was dressed so nicely, and her eye was drawn to an older girl who looked especially pretty that was chasing a cat into an alley. She was the kind of girl who was supposed to look in the windows and try on the clothes! Flora forgot all about monsters for a moment, quite preoccupied with her own self esteem issues.
However, just as it dawned on her that the girl was taking an awfully long time to catch the cat, she heard a call from the alley.
"Oh, oh my God!"
Glancing around, Flora darted into the alley as well, turning on her heel and changing as she did so. A Puella Magica emerged in front of the monster and hesitantly held out her doloire. The thing was terrifying. Flora paled, thinking that she'd never get used to these monsters, but there was the pretty girl, and she was in trouble, and Flora had the axe, and she only had shopping bags. "R-run away!" she offered to the girl, thrusting at the monster and shrieking as it lashed out at her, tearing at her sleeve.

Charlotte gaped up at the monster, her blue eyes stretched wide as it slowly advanced on her. The sounds it made were no longer sweet little mewls; they sounded almost as if someone was whining into a synthesizer, all garbled and unnatural. She backpedaled, but was arranged in an unfortunate way in the alley, for her back thumped against the side of a dumpster. Normally she would have bristled with disgust at the thought of rubbing up against a dumpster, but her brain was too preoccupied with terror to think of that at the moment.
She finally peeled her eyes away from the creature as a shadow passed in front of her, focusing on the small shape it belonged to: a girl! But what was she doing? She was actually standing up to the monster!? No way! Charlotte scrambled to her feet, catching sight of the long pole the girl held in her hand, but looked beyond it at the "cat" again. There was no way she could take this thing on her own, was there? She was so small! She looked barely old enough to be twelve, maybe thirteen at the very most.
"But..But what about you?" She asked, taking a step back as the cat began to grow, now about the size of a great dane, maybe a bit bigger. "I can't just leave you!" She added, reaching for the girl's arm. She caught sight of the scratch, and gasped, instantly feeling bad that this girl had gotten hurt because of her. Charlotte tugged at the little blonde girl's arm, trying to get her to run away as well.

Flora looked like she didn't much fancy the idea of being left alone with the... the thing either, and she bit her lip when the girl offered to stay, but even someone as perennially lonely as Flora knew a crazy idea when she heard one. "Don't worry about me!" she insisted. "This is my responsibility!"
Technically, it wasn't. She hadn't signed up for this, she just had to kill the big ones, the portraits had told her. But this thing had come from the museum, and she felt as vaguely territorial of it as she did of her friends, even though it was nothing she'd want to have a conversation with. Her father took care of exhibits in the UMA, after all. Dealing with pests in the UMA was all part of the job.
Remembering that this job was like her father's made her feel a little braver, and she tightened her grip on the doloire, flashing the pretty girl a wan smile. "I'm a lot stronger than I look, watch this!"
She jumped, much much higher than she had ever been able to before all this had started a few weeks ago, and thrust down at the thing with her doloire, landing behind the monster and pulling the blade from its back. It swung around to attack her, and she blocked its claws with the long axe handle, then swung the axe around to knock it against the wall. It was a ridiculous sight, all that strength coming from the body of a tiny twelve year old girl. It made her feel good-- and a little worried.

Still unconvinced by the little blonde's words, Charlotte remained pressed against the dumpster. She watched as the younger girl fought the...thing, showing extraordinary strength and agility for, well, a human. She even flinched as that long pole weapon (she had no idea what it was called and didn't particularly care at the moment) stabbed into the "cat's" back, but it didn't seem to do much damage. It was still angry and attacking, wheeling on the girl in green.
Desperate to help in some way, Charlotte fumbled. She picked up something random from beside her in the alley, a discarded shoe, and chucked it at the beast. Hopefully she could distract it so that the other girl could gain the upper hand! She couldn't just let the girl take it on by herself, after all!
No, that was a terrible idea, just terrible! It was advancing on her now, hissing and growling and gurgling, and she scrambled to get out of the way as it pounced. Her leg received a shallow scratch that burned like fire, and Charlotte cried out as she scooted along the dirty ground. What had she been thinking? Why had she interfered?!

Flora gasped and looked up as the monster swayed back and turned its attention to Charlotte. "No!" she cried, and leapt, landing squarely on its back.
Clearly she hadn't expected to land there, because she squealed as it started to buck her, and reached for her doloire, only to find she had dropped it when she jumped. "P-please!" she said, looking at Charlotte desperately. "Throw me my doloire!"
The monster grunted and hissed, lashing its tail, and looking back and forth from Charlotte, to the sky, craning its head to try to see what was on its back. Flora squeezed her eyes shut, clenched her fists into its fur, and prayed that it wouldn't roll over.
