Ixchellia had a friend coming over today. She had met them a few days ago while out and about, and with her proclivity to chat to anyone and everyone who caught her interest, she had soon ended up inviting them over to play at her house.
The boy’s name was Yiska and she’d been drawn to him partly because she had sensed he was another Curio, and partly because she liked the pretty feathers in his hair. Could she help it that she was drawn to pretty things? Not at all!
Having got permission from their parents, it was all set up. Her new friend was coming over – yay! The little girl was waiting with her only dollie tucked under one arm, just outside the front door, wearing a sleepy smile. Ixi bounced on her toes a little while she waited, then yawned and rubbed her eyes.
She hadn’t had much sleep the past three nights, after reading a book about ghosts which she got from the library, innocent and inquisitive as always. It was called ‘The Little Black Book of True Ghost Stories’ and after reading it from cover to cover, she’d been more scared in her life than she cared to remember. But would she tell anyone about it...no way! Ixi was a brave big girl. She would be okay...
With the sun up and shining, though, the things that haunted her didn’t seem quite so real…maybe tonight she wouldn’t have any nightmares. Maybe that stain on the bathroom wall wasn’t anything after all.
She hugged her doll tighter and thought of all the fun games she wanted to play. Ohh, maybe she would make him some of her special tea! Yes, they could have tea and biscuits, just like grown ups.

"It's the one with the red roof," Yiska pointed out remembering the instructions well that Ixichellia had given him as they pulled alongside the curb of the house.
Yiska had decided to take up Ixi's invitation to come over to her house. Mostly because Shane insisted that he get out more and make some friends but Yiska found her to be an interesting person that he actually wouldn't mind spending more time with, at least for a little while. Also, he secretly noticed the signs of lack of sleep she had and hoped he might have a new nightmare to track down.
After getting out of the minivan, Shane and Yiska walked up to the front door and Yiska gave it a polite knock. Shane hoped that Ixi and Yiska would get along well as he'd had a hard time coming out of his shell recently, more content to deal with dreams than actual people. He also hoped that Yiska wouldn't be turned away for bringing his bow and arrows with him into someone else's house, but the boy was not ever to be found more than a foot or two away from them at any given point. He'd wanted to explain that to Ixi's parents before they invited him, but it had always slipped his mind. Fortunately Yiska was a responsible boy and knew never to use them inside. Oh well, it was too late now so he just waited patiently for someone to answer the door.

There was a sleepy sounding titter from somewhere beside them before hands clapped gently over the eyes of the boy who had tapped on the front door, while a voice filled with a teasing glee sang “Guess who?” in his ears. Ixchellia was up to her playful tricks again and when these two had walked right past her waiting on the stairs, she couldn’t resist having a little fun with them.
She winked up at Yiska’s guardian, giving him a secretive smile along with a small shake of her head, signalling not give the game away.
However, their maid, Daniella, had appeared to answer the door. She had been busy cleaning the house while the twin’s nanny was busy with Sanqui but she came to answer it when she heard the knock. “Welcome to the Song residence. You must be the guests we’re awaiting. The mistress of the house is not available at present but please come on in.” She seemed quite mysterious for a maid, and perhaps a little too serious “Ixchellia, leave the boy alone. That’s no proper way to greet your visitors” Daniella tsked and raised an eyebrow at the behaviour, though she looked somewhat amused.
“Aw, Danni ruined it” Ixchellia uncovered Yiska's eyes with a pout and wagged a finger at the maid, “You’re not apposed ta say my name til he guesses it!"
Turning to Shane and Yiska, the curly haired tot poked her tongue cheekily at her maid before she gave them a quick curtsey, “Welcome, please come in” she intoned, making sure her dollie greeted them too. “An’ please has tea with me!” Ixi chimed, making her voice a little higher to pretend the doll was ‘talking’.
“Pardon me but what exactly were you planning to do today young Mistress?” Although she held the door open for them, the maid was eying the bow and arrows Yiska was carrying suspiciously. Those things in the hands of the twins would definitely be trouble!
Looking at Shane, she smiled politely “I’m not sure Victoria would allow those items to be played with inside the house, however, it should be okay so long as they don’t plan on using them.” She explained, almost as though she were able to read minds.
Just then, something small, sparkly and seahorse-shaped came whizzing from inside the house then flitted around the people gathered round the door, making tiny tinkling and chirruping sounds. The maid resisted the urge to swat the little creature with her cleaning rag, shooing it instead with a wave of her hand.
It clinked at her indignantly before settling itself in Yiska’s hair, wrapping its tail around the dark strands with a happy cheep.
“Oh, sorry…that’s Srawbee, he’s my pet” Ixi giggled, petting the sound sprite’s nose with her fingertip. "He likes you"

Yiksa was curious at why he had been momentarily blinded upon reaching the door, but then realized it was Ixchellia playing a guessing game. He smiled and was about to answer before he was interrupted by a strange woman. He could only presume she was a maid based on how she was dressed, and Yiska eyed her suspiciously. It was strange to him that there would be a need for people to have someone else to clean up for them, but then again he had seen similar kings of the dreamlands with such servants made with their will to dominate lesser dreams and nightmares.
While he was sizing up the maid, Ixi's doll invited him for tea, to whom he bowed and replied.
"Most certainly. It would be my honor to have some tea with such a fair lady." He did very much enjoy tea, and also knew it was never wise to refuse an invitation from a doll, being the knights of dreams.
He was suddenly broken out of his train of thought when he realized that the maid was referring to his bow as a toy. HIs face turned red with a uncharacteristic bout of anger and he was about to protest when Shane shot him a glance and then looked very seriously at the maid.
"I believe Yiska fully understands that his bow and arrow are not toys and that they are not to be touched by anyone." He then glanced back at Yiska. Shane said this in such a way that made it seem as though he was reassuring the maid of Yiska's responsibility, but in actuality he was saying what he knew Yiska himself already felt. They were in fact not toys and anyone was prohibited from touching them, on pain of death.
Exhaling and returning to his normally composed self Yiska was pleasantly surprised to find a strange creature had nestled itself in his hair.
"Oh, hello there Srawbee," he greeted "You can stay there if you'd like, just be careful not to touch the feathers, they're very special."
Shane, noticing that Yiska seemed to be enjoying himself already breathed a hidden sigh of relief and gave a wave.
"I'll be back to pick him up in a few hours then, have fun you two!" he said as he began to walk away.
It was then that Yiska noticed that Ixi's eyes looked rather heavy, and he smiled a little wider.
"We will!" he turned and replied.

Ixchellia was pleased with this boy’s reply to her dolly. Her eyes shone as she lowered it again. Someone willing to join in her game was elevated to a special status in her mind and she smiled back at Yiska approvingly. Ixi would no doubt trust him fully to partake in all such imaginary play from now on, whether it be visiting a queen’s tea party or exploring fantastic lands.
Danniella the maid awaited response to her house rule with a calm gaze befitting her deadpan expression. Her dark eyes floated over the boy, taking in the feathers twined in his hair, the weapons he carried. It was as though the woman was carved of marble, nothing seemed to faze her, probably because she’d been around Sanqui and Ixi too long.
“Very well, so long as that rule is adhered to there should not be a problem. I shall make everyone aware of it”. She glanced down at Ixchellia, who was taking everything in with piqued interest. “You hear that young mistress? They are not for anyone to touch, so no pranks and no mischief,” she stated kindly yet firmly.
Ixchellia giggled, a knowing expression that made her seem older than her years gleaming in her eyes. “I know~” she sang, words laced with a note of mirth as though she though Danni was being silly again. It was clearly obvious.
"Don’ worry…I know they are special to him, so I won’t touch ‘em”. She told the adults, while looking at Yiska. She was sensitive in the way some children were, able to pick up on what was not said but was felt or implied. She could feel a connection between this one and the bow and arrows well enough to figure some things out.
Ixi reached across and took Yiska’s hand in her own, beginning to tug him into the house. “Please to come in. I’ll show you mine room, otay?”
The sound sprite clinked softly from its perch in his hair, a filament thin tongue slipping out to brush his cheek, feeling much like a thread of spider silk. Apparently it really had taken a liking and was content to stay there.
Danniella nodded at Shane’s parting comment, watching Yiska be pulled into the hallway before swinging shut the heavy door with a shake of her head. “Remember not to go near your mother’s room or the study” she reminded the little girl, before turning back to her dusting.
Ixchellia had pulled her friend into the wide and rather short hallway. It faced directly onto a large double staircase yet it flowed past either side of them to different rooms at the back of the house, (left to the kitchen, right to the laundry). These, however, were not deemed very interesting at the moment and she had headed straight up the stairs, which led to the second floor where her room was located.
“Mine room needs lots of patence to get there” she explained, heaving an overly dramatic sigh.
