How did you first hear about Gaia and what made you decide to join? What were your first impressions of the site and what keeps you coming back?

My gaiaversary is coming up and it got me thinking about how long I've been here and why I joined in the first place. It feels like I've been on Gaia longer than 3 years, I realize that really isn't very long at all and I can't imagine what it must feel like for those of you who have been on since the beginning. But considering my track record with things like this and the fact that most of the networking sites I've joined, I really only joined to keep in touch with my sister who seems to jump from one to the next like it's going out of style...three years really does feel like a long time.
And yes I thought this was just a networking site when I first joined, I thought it was just another Myspace. Which is actually where I first heard about Gaia. My sister posted something about it, she wanted people to join so she'd get whatever it is you get when you invite someone to the site and since she wasn't on Myspace much anymore I figured I'd join so I'd have somewhere to talk to her. Once I got here I realized pretty quickly that it wasn't like Myspace at all and since I had never used a site with forums before I didn't really know where to start, so I didn't. I talked to my sister and dressed my avatar and that's all I did for quite awhile.
Eventually, she moved on to Facebook and while I followed her there as well, I had just started posting in a couple of threads here and decided to stay. After the threads died out I ended up becoming active in a couple of guilds so then I stayed for those. Now I stay for this guild, it's really the only place where I am still active. And of course I also stay for Saber, I like dressing her up or down, however you want to look at it. ^//^

TRANSANIMATION I learned Gaia from my cousin and from then on, I was hooked.
Matasoga
I wish that I could remember... I honestly have no idea, anymore.
Shesba All my friends had a Gaia name and I joined on my birthday. I was a puzzle addict. xD
Lady-Sanctuary
A friend was using Dream Avatar Creator and I wanted to see what it was originally from smilies/icon_smile.gif
necrofade
A rp friend of mine from invisionfree boards talked me into joining. Jumped on and off for abit, then during one of my on periods I met Drecko. Talked/rped on and off with him for a few years, tranfered names for myspace, we kept each other on here till he lost internet and I stayed. Drecko's now my fiance and lives her in TX with me, and I stay on here first for the good memories and now for my new friends.

I joined Gaia to play in a friend's RP thread. It never took off so I started hanging around the ED forum. Met our Guildmaster and the rest is history. I liked the site. It seemed kiddish but it was fun. Now this guild is the only reason I come back.
Saber Talawyrm
Well, it was lovely meeting you yesterday so I'm glad you stuck around. ^_^
Shaymer
Thank you. It was wonderful to come back to find more people and an improved guild.
Saber Talawyrm
You're welcome. I tend to run on a bit so it's nice having another person to talk to. ^_^
Shaymer
My character likes to monologue so we can chat late into the nite some days.
Saber Talawyrm
Just as long as you don't mind my sleep deprived babbling too much. I'm not really a night owl but I usually end up staying up anyhow. ^^;
Shaymer
Josh has that effect on people.

So I've noticed. ^^;
Ephynas Puggle
When I was nine or ten, my mom helped me make an account so I could keep in contact with her and my dad since my grand mother was so strict about the phone and I rarely got to call them or speak to them otherwise.
Saber Talawyrm
That's too bad that your grandmother was like that but I'm glad you were able to keep in touch through Gaia.
Ephynas Puggle
Indeed. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world, I had never really used a computer before that and just the concept of it all was so awesome. x3 It still is of course, just not as mind blowingly so.
Saber Talawyrm
I can imagine. I know my son gets majorly excited when I let him on to dress up an avatar. Liutana
Well, Bishounen Fangirl was selling this website pretty hard, but it was really the jigsaw game that got me to stick around.
Now, it's this guild that brings me back from time to time. (once in a blue moon, I know. smilies/icon_redface.gif )

I used to do the jigsaws a lot too but once I'd done them all a few times I got tired of them.
Matasoga
Aileen? I honestly thought that I would never see you here ever again. It's been comfortably over a year since your last post.
Lady-Sanctuary
That's so sweet! smilies/icon_3nodding.gif Aww...
Saber Talawyrm
Yeah, but his taste is terrible. I ended up making an avatar that he could dress up so that Saber didn't end up in one of his odd outfits. I suppose some day if he ever posts in a thread like this he'll have a funny little reason for having joined, he can tell people that he wasn't allowed to touch his mother's avatar and so had to have his own. d:
Lady-Sanctuary
Well that's still sweet smilies/icon_smile.gif Why not just put him on Dreamavatar creator? Then he can have ALL the items!
Saber Talawyrm
When I made it, I didn't know that existed. ^^;

Lady-Sanctuary
Well that's how I got into Gaia in the first place! I didn't know Gaia existed for ages.
Saber Talawyrm
I'm glad you found it. I've enjoyed chatting with you. ^_^
Lady-Sanctuary
I've enjoyed it too! smilies/icon_3nodding.gif What else would I do with my spare time?!
Liutana Yeah, I know. I don't have all that much to say, but it's nice to share greetings with friends.
Saber Talawyrm
Gaia is a nice place for that, it's a nice place to meet new friends too. (:

Sinful Nana Oh gosh. It's been a long time.
I remember, when I first started going online, I hung out in a lot of chat rooms and made friends that way. One day, a friend messaged me and mentioned go-gaia.com. I had never heard of the place, so I was curious, but not curious enough to join. A few months later I was really bored, and for some reason remembered the link that had been given to me. When I got here, I was instantly hooked. I didn't know what to do, but I loved the items and the general feeling.
It's been quite the journey from that place to here, but no matter what I've done, I've always returned. I know others may view this place negatively, but for me, it's always home.

During my Christmas break at the end of 2003, I was talking with a friend on MSN, and she was using her Gaia avatar as her display picture. I asked her about it, and she directed me here. Anyway, I had a look around, and decided I wanted to join, mostly so I could make my own avatar. The site was still really glitchy and buggy, though, so when I tried to register my username, I was told it was already taken (even though the memberlist showed otherwise). I tried a few different names, all with the same result, and then gave up on the idea of joining. A few weeks later, after talking to the same friend, I gave it another go, and I've been here since.
So, essentially I joined to play with a pixelated doll. blaugh

Simple. I was 16 and obsessed with anime at the time and was thus the target audience of this place. emotion_awesome
Ok seriously though. I first saw Gaia when some other kids were playing the first Halloween event in the library. It looked glitchy so I didn't bother joining. But after about a week I found the concept of customizable pixel anime dolls too appealing and joined, lol.

It was on an anime site a friend of mine often visited. She told me about it and a few others as well. It became a site where i could keep in touch with my close friends after I had quit public school. Eventually all of those friends except for myself had grown bored of Gaia and I was the only one that remained here.

I joined in 2004 after one of my closest friends decided to show me the site. I saw my first glimpses of the CB, avatar & art arenas, and the avatar art threads. So, after she had finished, I set up my own account and got to know quite a few people before the night was over. Sadly, that was during a time when I had very very limited internet access because my mother was certain that everyone on the internet was a bad person out to harm me. rolleyes So, I didn't get to spend very much time on that account, aside from the occasion I would sneak online while my parents were at work. Still, it was enough time for me to develop a slight addiction. razz

mmm I remember I was at walmart and saw one of those Gaia cash cards, when I got home I was playing a Yugioh game and remembered the name of the site because of the cards is called Evil Hero Gaia, so I decided to check the site out. I was at lost at the beggining but I found my way into the VH where I received assistance from some gaia users :3
