"Have a nice trip!"
The AI's last words echo in the air as the leader's communicator crackles, then dies. The airbus overhead turns and zips away with a faintly lasting whirr, disappearing quickly over the mass of trees now that its cargo is deposited. The group is left standing at the base of a tall metal beacon; it stretches upward into the air, reaching over the trees to transmit data back to the central Labs. All around, alien trees twist and stretch toward the sky, their curling branches and frond-like leaves soaking in the planet's pure sunlight.
It is a small clearing, big enough to hold the crew and the beacon, but the wildlife is already encroaching upon it eagerly. Vines can be seen trying to creep over the pole's base, and the rough-hacked path leading back to the Labs is already overgrown. It is easy for the explorers to see why airlifting to these outward spots was a better idea than trying to hack through the woods.
The communicator crackles to life again, and CaTDOS's voice splits the air, his words stringing together in a sing-song manner.
"Alright, adventurers~ It's time to begin~ Everyone, remember to keep your data transmitters active at all time~ It will constantly analyze and stream information back to us, so make sure you don't lose it, no matter what~" A face flickers onto the communicator's screen, a very distinct, pixelated '+ w+' expression. "Take a moment to introduce yourselves, but then please begin~ You are to enter the jungle away from the previously cut path~ Your goal is to find anything of interest that you can, particularly new species~ Please remember, be very careful~ Who knows what's lurking out there~? CaTDOS out~!"

This Tekimi expedition leader is gangly and has feather covered arms. Arms with awkward fingers that fumbled with the communicator they were holding. After nearly dropping it once or twice, he managed to stow it away for safe keeping. Smiling cheerfully at his assembled group of followers and asked the first question in a serious voice with a soft brogue accent. "Can any of you fly?" After a long pause filled with curious stares at them, he continued while raising his arm in emphasis of triumph. "I can! Am Eachéan!" He proclaimed confidently, ignoring that he... couldn't actually... uh... fly... But in his opinion, he could, and that's all that matters! Right? He had wings... They'd believe him, right? If there was anything dangerous out there, he could just fly away... Right?! "We're going ta be together for a while, so I hope we all get along tagether!" He fidgeted slightly, he'd forgotten to file his nails that morning. Hopefully that wouldn't hinder his walking too much while in the jungle. Idly, he played with the tassels that for some reason adorned his long mane of hair while waiting for the humans to introduce themselves. A similar, but rather larger and longer, tassel of the same color as his hair seemed to be attached to his behind. Perhaps he felt he needed a tail?

Tassels.
On their leader's butt. (There were some in his hair, too, but Modesto didn't much care about those.)
Modesto Chambers lifted his eyebrows. Well, okay. He'd seen worse in his old job as a man who, ah, performed onstage. At least this...Ech...something guy could fly. "Don't think any of us can," he said, a little gruffly. "But don't let that stop you."
"I'm Modesto, like the city." He was wearing, interestingly, a pair of leather chaps, and shoes that looked like they belonged on a tap dance stage.

Cassandra blinked, processing the question. After the gruff man with the strange pants spoke she finally assembled her thoughts in order and spoke in a fluid, beautiful way:
"I d-d-don't t-think I c-can unless you r-refferring to-to the m-more metaphorical usage of the word."
...Fiddlesticks. Less hope more execution next time. Yes. You are going to kick this stutter in the BUTT. Though uh. You wouldn't be adverse to actual butt-kicking either. That's why you signed up after all. You're s-s-sick fed up of being the nerdy lab technician. You're gonna be the hero!
...Or the dashing sidekick.
The girl let loose a tiny sigh. His hair; his tassels; his feathers!

A.R. stood amongst the group wearing a pair of ripped, barely there jeans, a pair of brown hiking boots, and a purple t-shirt that had been cut open to reveal his abdomen.
Shifting his weight A.R. pulled his beautiful blue hair back into simple low sitting ponytail. While looking over this... Eachéan, fellow he thought about how naive he seemed to be and how that could work in his favor. When asked if any of them could fly, he merely snorted and looked away.
After the young woman beside him had stumbled her way through a sentence, A.R. spoke coldly. "My name is Angel Reuben, but you can all call me A.R."

As the group chatted, a small, barely-noticeable hum shimmied through the air. As they talked, it gradually grew louder, until suddenly it split into a very loud, high-pitched whine, shattering the relative quiet of the jungle surroundings. The ground began to shake, and then, from nowhere, a blast of hot steam shot upward out of the dirt, blasting rocks and - more importantly - scalding hot water and air rushing upward.
Almost immediately after, another shot upward nearby, and a split started to form along the ground, bubbling with boiling hot water! The weight of the group combined with the beacon pole must have disturbed a heated, underground water source - proving potentially very dangerous for the group!
Dangerous Active Phase: Roll 1d10 to react. Goal: roll high.

"A course it won' stop me." Eachéan declared proudly before peering at Modesto curiously, his head cocked to the side a bit. "Yer a city?" He seemed to have taken him a bit more literally than the guy meant. How could a person be a city? Or did he mean he was big... He was tall sure, but not as tall as himself. Maybe he had parasites?
's ears twitched at the sound and he looked around in alarm when it got louder and the ground began to shake. Why was it shaking!? When the geysers started appearing, he let out a squawk of alarm. "Away! Everybody get ta safety!" He shouted to his team as he flapped his arm-wings while hop-running awkwardly. This place was against him! It was out to prove he couldn't fly, wasn't it!?

This was bad, very bad. A.R. had been in many a tight situation being a lawyer, but this took the cake. What the hell could any of them do? It was time to run. Trying his best not to panic A.R. took off in the same direction their leader was hopping in.
What else could go wrong now? He could die that's what. A.R. moved as quickly as his legs would take him attempting to get around the other people, and to safety.

Uneasy among so many unfamiliar faces, Renee had kept quiet as everyone talked. The whine in the air only made her all the more fidgety. When the split appeared, she let out a strangled squeak and bolted. It wasn't easy to run in that tight little outfit of hers, but Renee gave it her all.

"I am most certainly a city," Modesto had responded, almost straight-faced, before the ground began shaking. Well, stop, drop, and protect your head, right?
...or not. Was that a geyser? He'd never actually seen one of those before. He glanced over at his leader for a - oh, okay. Modesto shrugged. If that was the emergency procedure, he supposed he'd have to do it. He joined Eachéan in flapping his wings, and hop-ran a distance away from the geyser. He'd do the stop, drop, protect your head thing once he got the ******** away.

As Eachéan tried to get away, another flood of water shot up, nearly directly under him. Thankfully for him, A.R. was running in the same direction. As the ground cracked open, it sent A.R. somewhat off course, smacking into the tekimi and sending them both tumbling out of the way. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to fully protect the enthusiastic young creature - the feathers of one of Eachéan's arms were almost completely burnt or blasted off, and his leg on that side was badly burned.
Fortunately, he was most certainly alive, and hopefully with no sort of permanent damage.
Modesto was not quite so lucky. The heated water blasted him aside, scalding much of his body and face. It was not a fatal injury, but the human was quite injured and would require some sort of attention.
The other humans managed to get away on time.

Something that resembled a combination of a screech and a whinny escaped Eachéan's lips at the pain that exploded through his arm and leg. He lay crumpled next to A.R., still conscious, but whinnying in pain. His feathers... His pretty feathers! Hopefully they would regrow, since he was rather fond of them and it was rather hard to fly without feathers. Even though he couldn't actually fly anyway...
Apparently the place was indeed against him. Well, at least with his injury no one would try to make him prove that he could fly. He knew he should have filed his nails that morning, from now own he would be ever more vigilant about doing so to avoid anymore injuries like this in the future. As for that day... Only time will tell.
