Welcome to Torbaen, a Wizarding World role play in America!
Your mission is to get through the school year, learn some magic, and find out what is really going on behind some strange events.

We will be starting the rp just as the school year begins. You can choose to play a Professor or a student (or some of both), though student characters will be limited to third years and below. There are open Professor spots for Heads of Houses, though Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster are (of necessity) GM played NPCs. Please check the Professorship availability board to see whether the subject you may want to teach is still open. Also, absolutely no cannon characters will be allowed.

Please note that as you play, you may be sent additional information regarding the plot and your character's role in it. (You may suddenly find yourself working for the wrong side!) Please try to adapt to these situations without arousing suspicion, because your fellow players will be looking for them. (It should be noted that we expect no blurring of lines between ooc and ic information.) If you are given additional instructions about such things, we will try to do so far enough in advance to allow you to think about your character's part in this, so that you can maintain your character's identity.
There will be a FAQ thread, and there is already a thread about background information you may want to know.

Character sheets should be posted under the character sheet forms thread, and will be available for play once they have been approved (your character's name will be updated on the Who's Who list on the top of that thread).

About spells, charms, and other magic you can use, we must outline a few things. Like Hogwarts, Torbaen uses a defensive spell that prohibits apparation on school property. Also, no students are advanced enough to be an animagus at this time. (If that changes, we will let you know!) While you progress through your schooling, you will be able to access newer, more advanced skills, potion-making abilities, charms, and hexes.

A couple quick notes about posting:
1. Please always list the name of the character you are posting for in the first or second sentence. (We hate playing the "which character is that?" game)
2. Color-code your posts. It's only a little trouble to do, but it helps immensely. Here's how it will work:
For each character you post for, just add the color code as follows:
 Paytah House Students
 Odahingum House Students
 Tuwa House Students
Regular black text for Niyol House Students
 Professors and Other Staff Members
Unsorted Students, or "other"

Welcome to Torbaen! Based directly out of the Harry Potter series, but set quite a few years after the defeat of Voldemort, this rp will focus more on events that occur due to restraints and problems with the magical community in the United States.

What you need to understand is that you will be playing a young witch or wizard (and possibly a staff member) living at the Torbaen school. Most outside events will remain outside events, but the curriculum of the school focuses on muggle relationships quite a lot more due to the culture of the country. Magic is still a secret; the laws keeping it this way are severely upheld and punishable even by life inprisonment. It's serious stuff here.
Also, the NARM is not only the U.S., but mexico and canada as well. Just fyi.

American Magical History
In Northern America, well before Spaniards, French and English came and claimed parts of the Americas, magic abounded. The Native Americans practiced magic, but in a way that dealt with respect to the elements, and without wanting to harm the environment (except for the Grand Canyon incident, and we'll get to that later). The Medicine Men of the tribes were the wisest of the wizards, the ones who would look out for their tribes the most. Many natives who could use magic were not allowed to do so in many tribes, because of the amount of discipline thought necessary to do so. (And considering they used it to call down rain and other hefty elemental feats, this was not untrue.) However, young warriors with untamed magical talents would sometimes rebel, causing much of the fighting between tribes and nations. This infighting is what allowed the Europeans to come to this continent and take over, despite the meager numbers of wizards that they brought with them. The first wave of Spanish Conquistadors that came to Southern America, however, were mainly wizards, who quickly took over the country in the name of Spain.

Instead, as the natives moved aside for the settlers of North America, witches and wizards who were feeling persecuted amidst the restraints of religion and proprietary in their native europe began to come to america. At first this was not much of a problem, until infighting in the Puritan colonies brought attention to muggles of the possibility that witches existed. Muggles and wizards alike partook in the Salem Witch hunts, trying to squash a possible wizard uprising that would devastate the entire world. Nearby, as some of the first colleges were built, a school for wizards was raised in what is now Boston. This school, though very small, still exists and is the oldest wizarding school in North America.

As Native Americans began to be persecuted and driven into the wastes of desert lands in the west, magical relations with them failed. They fought back, a war we call the French and Indian war. Many stories from that war haunted the muggle settlers even through the beginning of the revolutionary war.

I do not have the time to name all the important figures in the Revolutionary war who were wizards and witches, though many might be surprising. Paul Revere was one, as was Thomas Jefferson. Ben Franklin was not, nor was George Washington. Interestingly, though, Martha Washington was. It was due to this fact the George did not really want to be the President of the United States, as he felt the wizarding community might assume they held all the power. Instead, however, Thomas Jefferson created the North American Republic of Magic, and it was with Washington's help and support that the Treaty for Magical Secrecy was added into U.S. laws. (Jefferson and others had to work with the french and spanish governments, and then Canada and Mexico to get the treaty into their laws, as well.) However, only the President of the United States, his wife, and the Vice President are given knowledge concerning the existence of magic. In exchange for this protection, half of the secret service protecting the President and Vice President at any time are wizards. This position is considered an honorable one among the wizarding world.

After the war, the movement against Native Americans became worse, and pressure from the magical republic could not convince the U.S. government to ease up on them. When, finally, a treaty was made, and lands given the natives, it was through mostly wizards' connections in the government. But the republic had to pay for that as well; they had to agree that never again would wizards hold positions of public office in the U.S. and try to sway national events from the inside. It was about this time that the NARM got recognition from many of the Native American tribes, who offered to teach them and learn from them. This is when the Torbaen school was created. In the middle of lands issued by the native americans in the middle of the New Mexico desert, the biggest school of witchcraft and wizardry in North America was created.

The school was named after the wizard that was the current President of the NARM at the time, Helius Torbaen. The four Houses of the school were named after the elements of earth, wind, fire and water that the Native Americans revered, but named in their own languages. From the Navajo, for wind, is Niyol. From the Hopi tribe, Tuwa is earth. The Sioux call fire Paytah. And the Cheyenne use the name Odahingum for water. Hence, the houses are Niyol, Tuwa, Paytah, and Odahingum. Their mascots are northern American animals that are somewhat represented by their element. The Niyol is represented by a Snow Owl, the Tuwa by a Grizzly Bear, the Paytah by a Scorpion, and the Odahingum by a Great White Shark. Hence the colors for the houses match the mascots and element. (see chart at bottom for more information)

It has only been in recent years, where satellites and other technologies have advanced that more precautions have had to been employed to hide Torbaen from the world. More and more, muggles are aware of the site of Torbaen, calling it “area 51” and surrounding it with legends regarding aliens, but they have been kept away from it by all costs. It has been due to extreme measures by NARM and the U.S. Government that has kept it a secret thus far. Threats to the dissolution of this secret are thereby punishable by law.

1st Year Letter:

Welcome to the Torbaen School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You have been selected among the thousands of aspiring wizards to attend the United States of America’s second longest standing school of Witchcraft and Wizardry to learn the craft that has been passed down through the ages.
We understand that for some of you, the news that you are, indeed, a wizard or witch may come as quite a surprise. After all, the strange things that have happened to you in moments of stress may have seemed like illusions or exaggerations of your imagination. We assure you that this is not the case at all. In fact, almost half of our incoming students every year are muggle-born; coming from families with no prior history of magic. In this country more than others, the complexities of magical breeding and backgrounds are indeed a wonder to us all. I digress.
Here at Torbaen you will be taught how to use your marvelous gift to provide you with an excellent future full of excitement and many career opportunities. Incoming first year students can expect a standard set of classes that include Potions, Charms, Herbology, American Magical History, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and of course Muggle Studies.
The second page of this letter will contain your list of mandatory supplies, as well as directions to two major Wizarding towns where you can procure these supplies. (There are also banks at these locations, able to turn Muggle money into Wizarding money for those that need it.) Please remember that tuition costs are covered by funds from the United States Government as well as the North American Magical Republic.
As a reminder, non-magical citizens are not to be made aware of the presence of wizards and witches in this world, excepting a student’s legal guardians and siblings. Breaking this oath of silence is punishable by not only our NAMR laws, but also USA laws through our Secrecy of Magic Compact.
That aside, we look forward to seeing you at the beginning of term, August 30th, 2012.
Excitedly Yours,
Headmaster of Torbaen
Order of the Wizard, 2nd Class
Eugene S. McArnold
Please follow these directions as closely as possible in order to have a smooth transition into formal wizarding school here at Torbaen.
Each first year student is responsible for bringing with them:

Cauldron, pewter, standard size 2
1 set of crystal vials
1 wand
Parchment, Ink Bottles and Quills as needed
Three Plain black work robes, with hood (school crest required on each)
1 pointed hat, black
1 pointed hat, heat-reflecting silk
1 pair of sturdy work gloves (Dragon Hide, or similar)
1 fur lined winter cloak
1 set of “Muggle Clothes” (available at a Muggle-Jim’s store at both locations)

Optional:
One owl, toad, or cat. (Other pets will be considered for older students only)
One Broomstick; must not be less than three years old, as lessons begin this year.

Local supply locations:
Dranke Lane, Salt Lake City, Utah. (See: Coppercreek Pub and Grill for entrance)
Ourfs Street, Nashville, Tennesse. (See: Bobby’s Idle Hour Tavern for entrance)

Please show up at the airport you’ve been assigned on your included ticket, and follow it exactly. If any connecting flights are needed, students are responsible for those arrangements.

2nd Year Letter

Welcome back to a second year at Torbaen School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We hope you have enjoyed your summer, and, as you have not been expelled for practicing magic among muggles, we expect you have taken your oath to uphold the secrecy of magic to heart.

All second years will attend Potions, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, International Magical History, Herbology and one elective. While your elective choices from last year have been taken into account, we would like to repeat that due to class sizes, you will not always receive your first choice. Your schedule is final, and will be issued after the Welcome Feast.

This year looks to be a splendid year, and we would like to remind all second year students that importing Weasley products is against school policy and grounds for expulsion.

Again, please show up at the airport you’ve been assigned on your included ticket, and follow it exactly. If any connecting flights are needed, students are responsible for those arrangements.

We look forward to seeing you for the new year!
Excitedly Yours,
Headmaster of Torbaen
Order of the Wizard, 2nd Class
Eugene S. McArnold

2nd Years Supply List:
1 set of crystal vials (last year’s set is fine, if unbroken)

1 pointed hat, black
1 pointed hat, heat-reflecting silk
1 pair of sturdy work gloves (Dragon Hide, or similar)

3rd Year Letter

Welcome back to another year at Torbaen School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We hope you have enjoyed your summer, and, as you have not been expelled for practicing magic among muggles, we expect you have taken your oath to uphold the secrecy of magic to heart.

While your elective choices from last year have been taken into account, we would like to repeat that due to class sizes, you will not always receive your first choices. Your schedule is final, and will be issued after the Welcome Feast.

This year looks to be a splendid year, and we would like to remind all third year students that importing Weasley products is against school policy and grounds for expulsion. Also, that Quidditch placements on teams are always subject to reconsideration by either the team captain of Head of House.

As always, please show up at the airport you’ve been assigned on your included ticket, and follow it exactly. If any connecting flights are needed, students are responsible for those arrangements.

We look forward to seeing you for the new year!

A few years later, n**'s mother married a Muggle who adopted toddler n**. Years passed, and after her first year at Torbaen, n**'s adoptive father was killed in a car accident so n** and her mother decided to move back to England to live near their remaining family. n**, through a pair of cousins, befriended The Boy Who Lived and fought in the war to kill You-Know-Who. Name: Andie and Angie Parkins
Age and Class Year: 11, 1st year students
Gender: Female
House: Paytah
Physical Description: Identical twins
Traits: Incredibility creative at both getting into, and out of, trouble.
Wand: Both have the same kind of wand: Yellow Heart wood, 14 inches, Dragon heartstring
Family/Bio: Andie and Angie are the youngest out of three children, their brother is actually 9 years older than them and is currently working abroad. Of the two, Angie is the older by five minutes and gets them out of the trouble that Andie gets them into. As they're hardly ever apart, one should be on alert when they only see one of the twins as that's about the time they're about to pull a prank.
Anything else notable: The only true way to tell them apart is by looking at their backs. Andie has a jagged scar running across her lower back from a prank gone wrong from when they were only six. Neither twin likes to talk about it. The scar will cause Andie pain if she starts pulling a prank that was as dangerous as the one that gave her it.

Remember that one is the Grounds Layout and the other is simply the Ground Floor.
Will be working on re-defined versions in Paint, trying to make them more... streamlined. Plus, will be adding the different levels of the floors, all in a smaller, more convenient size.
In other words, These are both currently more for reference than anything else.

Torbaen is a wide rectangular building, with towers on both North corners and the South-West corner. To the East of the building is the Great Hall, with a main connection of the Central East-West corridor into Torbaen. The towers extend a few levels, and the entire main building has three basement levels.
Towers:
The South-West Tower is the smallest, and is empty on the main floor (storage, possibly) and is the Headmaster's office on the second floor, with the third floor being Headmaster's Quarters. This is known as Tower A. Tower B is the North-West tower, and the largest and tallest. It's main floor is the Niyol Common Room, with stairways on each of the North corners to the upper levels. The North-West corner leads to the Girls' Rooms, and the North-East to the boys' Rooms. This continues for the second, third, and fourth floors. Tower C is a classroom on the main floor, the Owlry on the second floor, and the Astronomy Observatory on the third.
Ground Floor:
Along with the Towers and East-West Corridor leading to the Great Hall as previously mentioned, the Ground Floor like all floors beneath it also has a central North-South corridor, and Eastern and Western North-South corridors. Only the central North-South corridors lead to the front door and back door, respectively. The Hospital Wing is located in the North Eastern section of the ground floor, taking up most of that quarter of the building. Classrooms and bathrooms are scattered throughout the rest of the area.
Basement Level 1: The corridors as described in the Ground floor continue throughout the basement levels, though with one exception on all levels; there are no outside entrances/exits. Also, the West North-South corridors on Basement L.1 branch, at the ends, East and West, leading out of Torbaen and into the Great Hall. A Staircase on each of these entrances leads to the main floor, while passing through an almost hidden door straight past them leads into the kitchens below the Hall. As far as other sections in Basement L.1, the North-West corner of this level is the Paytah Common Room, and over half of the South section starting from the East is the entirety of the Odahingum House, with the Girls' and Boys' rooms farthest East and the Common room in the middle, off the Central North-South corridor. Only Tower A extends down into the Basement Levels, and this area is locked at all times. Classrooms and bathrooms as well as Staff Accommodations occupy the remaining free space throughout BL1.
Basement Level 2:
Apart from the continuation of common corridors, Basement L2 is not remarkable. The Paytah House's Boys' Rooms are located under it's common room in (still) the North-West corner of the building, with stairs leading up and down (though boys can't go down un-escorted). In the North-East corner of BL2 is the Tuwa common room. The vast remainder of the level is classrooms, bathrooms, storage, Staff Accommodations, and is thus the level with the most amount of classrooms in it.
Basement Level 3:
Again; same corridors. Paytah House's Girls' Rooms are the North-West corner, just below the Boys' rooms. They access the third floor as well as the stairs through the boys' section, but boys can not enter Paytah House on this level. The Tuwa Boys' and Girls' rooms occupy the entire East third of the building, with the Boys' area in the North directly below the common room, and the Girls' room along the South section. Again, the remainder of the level is occupied by classrooms, bathrooms, storage, Staff Accommodations, etc.
Outside the School:
Besides the Great Hall directly to the East of the School (and quite close to it), there are a few structures to be aware of. Directly North of Torbaen is an underground indoor greater-than Olympic sized pool, whose Skylights go half a story above the ground to let in natural sunlight when they are open (there is a spell to open/close the skylights. Anyone after first years will already know it). Further North and a bit to the East are the Hot Springs. There are two Springs, a smaller one closer to the school which, with permission, students can use, and a larger one that happens to be home to various dangerous creatures and whatnot. This is off limits. The Quidditch Field is further East than the Great Hall, and is also further South than the school. Even further South and East is the Airstrip. From the Airstrip in a plane, one should be able to see the stadium's grandstands, but nothing else of the area due to the slope of the land. To the South and West of Torbaen is the Creature Stables. This building looks like some kind of reinforced metal enclosure straight out of Jurassic Park- if you've seen the muggle movie, that is. There are hills to the North, East, and West of Torbaen, and eventually further South of Habersnatch (the town South of Torbaen and out of sight). This location therefore is hidden from view by muggles.

Helpful Tips:

When creating a character, please tektek it! It really helps others to "see" your character.

Some tips for tektek'ing:
1. Go ahead and make 2 versions of your character; one in their uniform, and one out. It helps to define a character by what they wear, and the uniforms really don't help with that.
2. Look up "wizard", "mage", "sorcerer", "high elf" and "morgana" to find some nifty robes, wands, and hats to use for your uniform. Also, inari's beads has an open robe that professors might use.
3. When placing the image on your char sheet, replace the coded "img" tag with "imgright" , which puts the pic to the right, not disrupting the words in your sheet. Make sure to close the closing "/img" with "/imgright" instead.

more to come! (open for editing suggestions!)

Please Remember: (was mentioned in first post...)
When you are posting, it will help us all if you color code your posts;

Use these colors for your characters as they apply to the character:
 For Staff Members
 For Paytah House students
 For Odahingum students
 For Tuwa students
Black for Niyol students
 for Unsorted Students and "others".

This will really help identify who is who, and what house they're in (for rivalries, affiliations, etc). Since we shouldn't have to describe our characters wearing House colors at all times, it really will help.
Also, for 1st years before the sorting, it doesn't matter. Use the regular black, or whatever House's colors you're hoping for. After that post, however, try to use the colors.
Thanks!
