So I've heard that the game is extremely linear and not a whole lot of real difference between units or even factions to pick from, but I miss the quick-paced style of the old Mech Warriors Clix game and like the look of the CAV units. I have never played it and never actually met anyone who has, so I'm wondering if any of you have.
Is this game worth getting into, even just to paint some figures?

From what I've heard it is a Mechwarrior rip-off with more dice you need to roll and less of the depth the original has.

The Battletech introductory box set is a big expensive, but you do get a boatload of goodies for it including full rules, twenty (?) Mechs of varying classes and sizes, two maps and an assortment of other primers and leaflets to help you get settled into the verse good and proper.

Considering how you feel about it I'd just suggest using the Battletech rules and buying some of the CAV minis. Reaper makes a lot of really keen robot miniatures, and even keep the older ones in the 'Robot Garage' instead of discontinuing them. I'm sure they're a close enough size to the Battletech figures.

Well, it would have helped if I had ordered them a week ago, so I would have had them ready for the desert training I have going on for three weeks now...
