So, as probably all of you know, as the Dragon Warrior series became the Dragon Quest series, things became punny. And these aren't the "Whyyyyyyyy" puns. They're the GOOD puns that you actually WANT to hear. So I've been thinking, what's everyone's opinion on the punny nature of the Dragon Quest series? Does it detract from the plot? Does it make the game feel too lighthearted when it strives to be serious? I think it's a nice blend myself, however, I've only played Dragon Quests 8, 9, and 4 for the DS.

I think that the punny nature of the Dragon Quest series does make it light-hearted. However, light doesn't mean bad. I have seen other series (like FF) take themselves too seriously.
I don't think that it detracts from the story. I still felt the emotions that happened in the scenes between the NPC's, as well as the interactions between the Celestrians and your adventures.
Haha, I only played IX too, but I adore the puns.
I've always been a fan of puns anyway. :V

I love puns. I've always loved puns. And I love DQ's punny nature. It's always been around in some form, but they have been playing it up lately, and I don't mind at all.
I like a game that can be lighthearted and serious. I think the best stories and characters are ones that can cover a wide range of emotions naturally. ANd DQ is all over that. You'll laugh, cry, be amazed, be calm, be scared, be happy. All accomplished through relatively simple writing and stories. I think that there is indeed a lot to admire in DQ's writing style.
ANyway, here's the question of the day. What is your favorite Dragon Quest Pun?
I'd have to go with Angel Falls. It's a subtle pun that fits in perfectly as the town name and a plot event.
More points to all the nun puns in this game and the DS remakes. From DQIX's Jack of Alltrades Master of Nuns (though they do call him the Master of Nu'un, but I like to think of him as Master of Nuns too), to DQIV DS's Nun the Wiser, to DQV DS's Nun of the Above.

My favorite pun huh? I'ma have to agree with you on Jack of Alltrades Abbey aka Master of Nu'un. It's a good one, and I honestly can't think of any others off the top of my head. I have found my PS2 AV cable so I'll probably be able to scour the land of DQ8 to refresh my memory. All of the monster puns are GREAT too. I can't think of a specific one off the top of my head but I always got a chuckle out of them.

Stuff like Notso Macho and Urnexpected? Or even names like Potty Dragon or Dragurn? I can't think of too many off the top of my head at the moment, but I know that some of the puns, especially amongst the monsters, makes me wish I was more creative then I am.
They've got some creative localizers. I think even the people who don't like the pun-heavy localizations should at least acknowledge that a lot of fun and creativity went into them. biggrin

Now that I think about it, in DQVIII a lot of the notorious monsters(Read: Monster Arena monsters)had great names. Nohi is one of my favorites as Killer Director. Eheheheh oh you silly developers. Man-At-Arms AKA Skeledoid. I laughed. A lot. And then there is the Troll Patroller or whatever AKA Pa Troll. Yep. Pa Troll.

Brusque lee is my favorite pun. Nasto machos and icikillers are also funny. I got jack of all trades right away. It took me a month to figure out master of nu'un lol. I always pronounced it noon. I think there's someone called catty Cathy somewhere in 9. I may be mistaken, but I'd be surprised if they hadn't made that yet.

I have heard of a Catty Cathy somewhere... though I could be thinking of a Chatty Cathy from something else. Eheheheh oh you silly developers. Man-At-Arms AKA Skeledoid. I laughed. A lot. And then there is the Troll Patroller or whatever AKA Pa Troll. Yep. Pa Troll. I forgot about the monster arena monster names! I know that my brother and I were playing DQVIII together when we found the Bushwacker. He recruited him, and we both laughed out loud when his nickname turned out to be Bush W. "Riptide" is a punny monster name in itself. But the one that you can recruit for the Arena makes it double by being named "SeaSaw." Makes the monster name "Claws" look three times as lame.

SeaSaw oh man. That was a great one. You had to work to find him too. ...I THINK he was actually on the uncharted island the little bugger. A couple others are great too. The Puppet Pugilist aka Dolldrums, Greater Sabrecat aka Spot, and one of my personal favorites, the Root of Evil aka Twiggy.
