I am in the process of getting a degree in flute performance (which I find terribly exciting), and I like to share knowledge! What have you experienced in your respective studios? Have you felt like it's a family, or hated the cattiness of flute players? What have you learned as a college musician, and how has it affected your playing abilities? Have you found any great repertoire pieces? Tell all!

I'm not actually part of the flute studio (I'm not a music major or minor), but from my understanding, the flute studio professor is not the most... caring, I suppose? One girl in the flute studio gets lessons with my private teacher (who this girl studied with in high school too) over the breaks.
My private teacher is the flute professor at a local private college. From what I understand there, it's a lot more friendly.

What I've noticed is that yes, flautists are catty towards each other, but we thrive on competition. Although, my school is more geared towards piano and voice, so there aren't a lot of flute students. There are a total of three. Myself, a girl who dropped flute and went for voice because of my teacher's demands, and one going into her second year who is going to switch out because she is not at university level.
All that being said, we are very tight knit and love collaborating. We've all played in duets/trios and it's a fantastic experience.
By the end of this year, I will have a BA with a major in music and a senior recital under my belt. <3
