My Mom said when I was little, I couldn't drink real milk because it made me sick, so she fed me soy milk instead. But I guess she thought I was over it, because I eventually switched to normal milk and didn't really have a problem. But lately, in my high school years (I'm a junior right now) I'd have these HORRIBLE stomachaches in the morning. I eventually connected it with milk, because I only got them on school days, and I drank very little milk when I had no school because I would sleep through breakfast. My Mom started buying me almond milk instead and giving my lactose pills when I had nothing else except normal milk to drink. The stomachaches have stopped, but here's the thing - drinking milk in the mornings would give me stomachaches SOMETIMES. Some days I would drink milk at breakfast and be fine, other days it gave me a horrible stomachache. Also, I can have products containing milk (such as ice cream) and be fine, or drink milk with cookies as an after-school snack and be fine. It's just every now and then on school mornings, and only in the past few years (it might have occured in my middle school years, but I don't recall it ever happening in elementary school). Is it possible to be "slightly" lactose intolerant like this?

"Lactose intolerance is the inability or insufficient ability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products.
...People with lactose intolerance may feel uncomfortable 30 minutes to 2 hours after consuming milk and milk products. Symptoms range from mild to severe, based on the amount of lactose consumed and the amount a person can tolerate. Common symptoms include abdominal pain abdominal bloating gas diarrhea nausea..."
I initially thought you might have lactose intolerance, but when I read that sometimes you get symptoms when you have Milk in the morning, and sometimes you don't. My answer is you might have a different digestive problem instead, who knows. Lactose intolerance symptoms are pretty consistent when you have the deficiency in Lactase.
I have Lactose Intolerance too. I always get abdominal pain/cramps every time I drink milk...it's pretty consistent.
So, I have few questions for you,
1. First, how was your stomach aches? Is it like cramps? were you gassy? do you get diarrhea after you drink milk? is it like a sharp pain?
2. What kind of milk were you drinking? Is it 2%, 1% Skim Milk? 1% or 2% regular milk? or 3%? If you don't know, you check the box or ask your mom.
3. Does your mom buy the some percentage of milk every time?

If i consume lactose often, it affects me immediately to sometimes the next day. and other times it doesn't affect me at all but I never know, i found it depends on how much i consume and how often. third... I agree with all of your questions and was going to ask those as well.

I know how you feel!! I can't drink a lot of milk with out getting sick. You can be slightly lactose intolerant ((I was a dairy ambassador so I had to learn about this.... )). It is actually very common to only be some what intolerant. I can drink a little milk, not a lot, and I have to limit my yogurt. But hard cheeses are ok for me.
If you want to, just switch on and off between soy and real milk. There are types of REALLY good milks that are lactose free too ((Darigold Refuel, its chocholate and chocolate-peanut butter, super good.)) I hope you figure it out, I'm in the same boat.

It's sort of like a cramping pain in my lower stomach. 2. It was almost always 1%, but on rare occasions it might be 2%. 3. She almost always buys 1%, but sometimes she might buy 2% if it's on sale or something.

Yes, it is possible. In fact, most people who are lactose intolerant have their own dairy limits. Most people that are lactose intolerant I know are that way. I don't think I've ever met anybody that's completely lactose intolerant where they can't have dairy at all.
When I was younger, I drank milk a lot and I dealt with it fine. When I got older, milk started tasting nasty so I'd only drink chocolate milk. I also loved other dairy products.
Milk is the roughest thing on me. If I have a medium or large milkshake at a restaurant - it's usually enough to make me feel miserable after it starts trying to digest. This is why I get chocolate soy milk (Silk) instead because it doesn't hurt and the serving size is small so it lasts quite a while.
When it comes to ice cream, I know my limits - it's usually about 2-3 normal sized scoops. After that, I'll be in pain if I don't stop. It's sad, though, because ice cream is so good heart As an alternative, I'll usually stick with popsicles or frozen yogurt. Frozen yogurt tastes better and it doesn't hurt.
The interesting thing is yogurt doesn't usually bother people that are lactose intolerant. Some think it's because it's paired with good bacterias that help aid with digestion. This, I can believe because yogurt is calming on the stomach. I can eat plenty of yogurt and not feel bad.
With cheeses - it's different. I need to get cheeses that are aged longer (the longer the cheese is aged, the less dairy it generally has). I generally stick with extra sharp cheddar because I can have more of it than I can with soft cheeses. If it's a soft cheese such as mozzarella that isn't aged too long, I can't have too much of it. Mild cheddar I can't have too much of, either.
I don't know my limit on butter because I don't think I've ever had enough of it to make me feel sick. I don't use lactose intolerant butter, but once my parents accidentally bought lactose intolerant butter and I tried it and it tasted like the real thing to me =P it was probably a form of margarine.
Although, the think I miss the most is mac & cheese. I love mac & cheese and it's one of the most awesome foods EVER! I also love me a good grilled cheese sandwich! Sadly, I can't have these often or in large quantities. Although, I can have mac & cheese if it's oven baked because it bakes out all the dairy smile and with grilled cheese sandwiches I as little cheese as possible - enough to where I can taste it, but not enough to make me feel sick. I also try to take it easy on the butter and generally use margarine instead because it spreads better on the bread anyway. I love pudding, but that messes me up if it's not cooked. If the pudding is cooked, it gets rid of a lot of the dairy so I can eat plenty of it. ^_^ There's always alternatives.
It's good that you know your limits, and it's best if you stick to them. If you're slightly lactose intolerant - you can still enjoy dairy - just in smaller amounts. Best news is that there are plenty alternatives to dairy - there's a lot of non-dairy versions of things out there.
Also when you say you could drink milk one day and be fine and drink it another and be sick - did you have more milk on the day you felt sick? If you did, that can be an indicator of lactose intolerance because we have our limits. Also, the percentages probably have varying dairy content like between 1%, 2%, skim, whole, etc.
I know you only asked a simple question, but I figured I'd give you a lot of what helps me. It took me years to find a stable balance with what I eat and my lactose intolerance and how I could still enjoy foods I loved that have dairy in them. smile Figured you might be interested in the reading ^_^

I had this same problem, I also started taking lactose pills, but they didn't help. My mom started working in the organics department of her store, and brought home all natural-no hormone, no pesticides milk for us to try. First of all, it's delicious. Second of all, I could drink as much of that milk as I wanted and not have a single stomach-ache. Well, my mom stopped working there, and the prices rose a lot, so it was too expensive. We went back to skim milk, and I was having the stomach aches again. I went to the doctor and told him about it again (he had originally suggested the lactose pills), and since they hadn't worked, he came to a conclusion that it was the hormones in the milk. He said I had a sensitivity to the hormones, not necessarily an allergy, but my body doesn't want to accept the other things in the milk. Since there wasn't really any other explanation, I figured it was logical. I had tried 4 different lactose medications, and none had worked. And they pump the cows with so many hormones nowadays to get extra product. Now I have to limit myself on the milk I drink, and it sucks, because I like chocolate milk a lot. ):

I absolutely cannot drink milk in the morning. I find myself on the toilet perhaps 10 minutes later after drinking even a small amount. I dont even allow myself to eat any milk products until after 12 in the afternoon. After that, Im completely fine and can have any milk product I want.
