It's a bit long but I think it is worth the read. I heard it while driving last night at 1AM under a full moon, kinda spooked me.
Croglin Grange Vampire Case Two brothers and their sister bought a seven year lease on a place called Croglin Hall in Cumberland, England. Well shortly after moving in to the one story building the sister was looking out the window on night and she saw a figure moving on the lawn which she described as a scarecrow-like figure with red eyes. She said it was moving towards the house right at her. It reached the window and started to pry a diamond shaped window piece out of the window. She backed away to the door but it was locked, meanwhile it had removed the glass piece and had stuck it’s hand which she described as a claw in through the window and was undoing the latch on the window. The Girl was trying to unlock the door but managed to muck it up and dropped the key., when she turned back the thing had entered the room. She was screaming bloody murder but her brothers couldn’t get in to help her through the locked door. It was a sturdy door and by the time they broke it down the creature had fled and they found their sister lying on the floor, there were bites on her face and neck. The brothers took her to Switzerland to recover but the girl was very brave and after she recovered she insisted that they not let themselves be driven out of the house, but before they should return the brothers both bought a pistol. Upon returning to England the sister insisted that one brother should sleep in the room near the front door while the other should sleep in the room across the hall from her. She instructed her brothers that if she saw anything the one across the hall should come to her while the other should go outside and shoot the creature. Well in about a week it happened, she saw the thing coming across the lawn and screamed. Her on brother who was big and burly came in to protect her while the other went out, saw the creature and shot it in the leg. The creature limped away towards a nearby church yard where there were tombs, entered one and closed the door behind it. The brother was brave but he was not about to follow it into the tomb unarmed, (It was a single shot pistol) so he went to get help. Soon both brothers, followed by their friends and a mob of villagers, approached the tomb, opened it and inside they found and open casket. Inside the casket they found a partially decayed corpse with fresh blood on the hands and lips. Well that was all the evidence they needed. They dragged it out to a cross road, cut off the arms, legs and head. Staked the body and then burned it to ash. Examining the ashes they found a bullet. They were satisfied that they had destroyed the vampire. And the attacks stopped which just confirmed their beliefs. The investigator who told this story went to check it out. When he got to the village he looked for the building but the one that matched the name and description had two floors not one, then he looked for the church but the closest one was over two miles away which seemed to far for a limping man to flee. Thirdly it occurred to him that the pistols didn’t make any sense either, why would the brothers use single shots instead of revolvers? Well he went to speak to the current owner who explained that the building had had a second floor added since the time of the story and there was a field that she could not plow because there were foundation stones in the ground, the church had been destroyed by Cromwell which dated the story not to the 19th century but to the 17th century when black powder single shot pistols were all there was. Finally a local doctor offered a logical explanation for the rest. He believed that the vampire was actually an insane man who just thought he was a vampire, and lived in the tombs somewhat like the man from the Bible. When the brother chased him to the tomb the man had placed a corpse in the casket, dug the bullet out of his own leg and pushed it into the leg of the corpse and then smeared his own blood on the lips and hands of the corpse. When the brother left to get help the ‘vampire’ made his escape. The doctor also surmised that they probably found him dead in a ditch within the week, touching the corpse and then his own open wound would almost certainly have resulted in Gangrene which would kill him and explain why the attacks stopped.
