Elton tapped a foot as he hurriedly scribbled out a letter to his family back home. He'd put it off for way too long and he'd received a howler just the other day chewing him out about it. That had been really embarrassing, but he knew better than to ignore one of those. If had hadn't been so busy with tutoring, classes, and catching up with his missed assignments he would have started sooner.

He paused and glanced down at his letter, taking a few seconds to pop his knuckles and then went on writing for five more minutes.
Finally once it had a good length he sat back satisfied and read it over.

Dear Mother, Father and Sisters,
I've finally gotten around to writing you back. I apologize for it taking so long. School has kept me very busy! It seems as though the schoolwork is coming out of the woodwork! And there is quite a lot of woodwork here at Hogwarts!

I think I have made a few friends o far; they haven't denied it yet so I suppose that's a good thing. :3 I am friends with two second years, Siiana and Arona and a first year called Emma. I suppose you find this amusing that I only have friends that are girls. Well all three of them are Gryffindors like I am, so that's not too strange. I am hoping to find some guys to make friends with, but it seems as though I'm limited what with all this school I'm catching up on.

Oh, well I have met Lysander only he's my tutor so I suppose that doens't really count. He's in Ravenclaw and is a rather decent fellow; though I don't think we'll end up friends. He gets so easily frustrated with me and I with him. He's a slave driver! He rarely lets me have any free time for playing! I guess I had it coming though, what with not staying on track with everything.

Lys has said that if I pass my next test with high enough marks, he may allow me more free time, but I'm not so sure that will happen. I shall try my hardest though.

Kilaha, Devon,Yasha,Eviah,
Would you mind sending some more treats for Edmee? I've run out of them strangely. I have no idea where they could have gone or who might have taken them. I suppose I should be more careful with where I put her grasshoppers. It's possible that they escaped, though no one has been complaining of bugs in their clothes yet.

So what's going on at home? Any exciting news to share? Fill me in! I'm dying to hear what's going on. Maybe you could send me some new pictures! Oh, I shared some pictures that I took of those dueling wizards with Siiana and she said that they were really good. She says I should be a photographer since I have a good eye for it. I was wondering, would it be possible to borrow the old camera for awhile?

Send my love to Grandmother when you see her next! Also my apologies for not being a better student. I am most contrite about that. I shall do much better.

Warmest regards and affections from your son and brother,
Elton T. Bligh

Elton thought it looked rather good, and it would suffice for his parents' needs. He just hoped that he didn't get another Howler in the middle of breakfast, that definitely had been a first and he hoped a last. He had hated the laughs and the smug looks the other kids had shot his way. Especially those from the Slytherin table. He still didn't get why the two Houses were so horrible to each other.

He waved the parchment around a bit to dry the ink and then rolled it up and sealed it with a bit of wax. He pulled his cloak on and dashed out of his room and through the school towards the owlery. He ignored the annoyed cries of other students as he dashed past, he didn't have time to be slow. He needed to get his letter sent off and then he had to go back and hit the books.

The sooner he got his grades up, the sooner he could resume his fencing practice with Siiana. He rather missed spending time with her outdoors. It sucked being stuck indoors in reading musty old books that were falling apart. How he wished he had been able to get newer books..but with his large family all the books got handed down as his parent's couldn't afford new stuff.

Elton ran up the winding stairs that led up into the owlry and shivered as a cold blast of frigid air hit him straight in the face. "Brr.." He exclaimed and hugged his arms around himself and slowed down a bit. "When did it get soo darn cold?" He murmured and stomped his feet a bit to warm them and entered the owlery.

He found Edmee easily enough, she had taken to roosting in the eastern part of the building in an alcove away from the cold winds. Poor thing was probably freezing. Elton was going to have to find something to do to keep her warmer. "Hey girl, I'm sorry I don't have any treats, but the girls should give you something when you get home." He said petting her soft chest feathers before he attached the parchment to her ankle. "I imagine they'll want to spoil you a bit as well."

Elton petted Edmee a little more before she flew off with a mild hoot at him and then he turned to go. Gosh, it was seriously getting cold! Elton decided he'd better run, since that would get his blood pumping and keep him from freezing.

He pulled his cloak up around his face and head and held it close to keep his nose from getting red from the cold. That was his first mistake, the second was putting his head down as he ran. The third was his running straight into the kid that was coming up the last step into the owlery. The both of them went down in a tangle of flailing limbs.

Louis glanced down at the letter in front of him. Hmm...his mother would probably chide him on his penmanship but it wasn't his fault. It was cold in the dungeon common-room and it was making him shiver unpleasantly. He gave it a quick once over.

Dear Mother,

--------Thank you for the biscotti they were a glad reminder of home. The food here is nothing compared to yours.

--------I'm glad I've made you proud. Though with you as my mother there was no question as to where I would be sorted. I've encountered a few students from the other houses and you were right in every aspect. Slytherin's truely are the pick of the litter. My own housemates are well and fine enough, I haven't yet found one worthy of true friendship though. I am not worried though.

--------My only complaint is how terribly cold it is here. You'd think with so many witches and wizards in one place SOMEONE could preform a decent warming spell. Nero dislikes the owlery and I often bring her down to the common room with me. I think she would agree with me, we'll both be glad when spring comes again. I miss the warm weather of Sicily.

--------My grades are well enough though I am disappointed with some of the teachers here. I will give you a thorough explanation in my next letter. I must cut this one short as I have Astronomy later tonight and must finish my paper before then.

--------Give my love to my siblings and Father as well as Gamma and Grandpa Greco. I'm happy to hear that they were able to visit. Tell them I miss them terribly and not to spoil Nero so much. She's looking a bit round.

-----------------------------------------------------Your Devoted Son,
----------------------------------------------------------------------Louis

Pleased with the result he rolled it up and sealed with. He stood from the desk and clicked his tongue. Nero flew from the window sill where she had been watching the murky lake depths for signs of the squid. She landed on Louis's outstretched arm and bumped her forehead against his, clicking her beak happiy.

Louis smiled down at the wine colored bird and threw his cloak over his shoulders, nestling Nero within it's warmth as he left the dungeons and made his way up to the owlery.

He was so preoccupied with being angry at the cold weather that he didn't notice the boy barreling out of the tower till it was too late. Louis was thrown backwards with a yell. Nero screeched with fear and launched herself from within Louis's cloak. She soared up into the high rafters.

Louis's wand was flung from his pocket as well, launching angry sparks into the air and alarming the other owls roosted there. Louis laid flat on his back, dazed from cracking his head on the floor. "Bloody hell...The hell is your problem?!" He winced and reached for his scalp to check for blood(of which there was none), his eyes still a little unfocused.

Elton laid on the floor of the owlery staring up at the rafters for a few moments, the wind completely knocked out of him. He gasped, sputtered and finally was able to breathe in some air. He rubbed his head and sat up slowly, wincing at the sudden pang of pain in his head and his left elbow.

He tried to get to his feet but a sudden wave of dizzyness swept over him, causing him to sit down and put his head between his legs. "Oh gods, I'm sorry." He said between short gasps of air. "I didn't see you..Are you okay?"

Finally his head was feeling a little better and he glanced up at the other boy. He looked completely irritated and nearly fuming mad at having been rammed into. Elton slowly moved over to him and offered him a hand, his other hand bracing against the door frame so he would have leverage to help the other boy up. He was still pretty disorientated.

"Here, the least I can do is help you up."

Louis sat up carefully, blinking to stop his vision from swimming. He accepted the boys offered hand and used it to get to his feet. At least the boy had a strain of decency in his thick skull. Louis balanced carefully, brushing the dust, straw and dried owl droppings from his grey cloak. "Ugh." He wrinkled his nose, how disgusting, He wouldn't be able to wear it again until he could send it to be cleaned.

"I'll live. Why in the world were you running?" He asked a little crossly as he lifted his gaze from himself to the boy, getting a good look at him for the first time. He saw the colors decorating the boys clothes and his brows furrowed. Well there was his answer, the boy was a Gryffindor. Years of trained elitism reared it's ugly head within the first year Slytherin. A small sneer flickered on his face.

Elton gasped at the sudden added weight of the other boy and tried to brace himself on the door frame. His shoulders screamed from the pain and tears welled up in the corners of his eyes. He bit down on his bottom lip to keep from crying out from it and eyed the other boy.
He didn't look too bad thankfully, but he could have gotten hurt much worse than he appeared.

Why did his shoulders hurt him so badly? Had he fallen on something? Elton glanced around at the ground behind him.

"I was in a hurry to get something finished. " He mumbled still trying to see what might have hurt him so badly. Then his eyes alighted on the rake that was hidden partially under the straw.

Elton's eyes widened. Crap. Could it have punctured through his coat and into his back? Maybe that was why his shoulders were bugging him so much. He quickly pulled his cloak off and turned around. "Do you see any blood back there? I think I might have fallen on the rake spokes."

He was so concerned with what might have happened to his back and shoulders that he didn't even notice the sneer on the other's face.

Louis frowned. The boy didn't even have the decency to look at the person he was talking to! And mumbling, his mother would have never stood for it. Louis crossed his arms in front of his chest, following the boys gaze to the rake on the floor. Once again he was disgusted. Obviously the house elves here weren't very thorough in their work. He was generally finding much to be wanted in this supposedly best of all schools. It seemed rather lack luster to him.

Feathers and dust still rained down on them from the agitated owls above. His attention was drawn back by the Gryffindor's question. "Your cloak is torn." He observed as it was removed. "I don't see Blood." In his mind the word had a dual meaning, whether it would be caught or not was up for debate. Louis new it was there and it was enough to please him. He bent to retrieve his letter from the floor at his feet. It was coated in dust, the ribbon filthy and edges bent. There was no way he was sending it to his mother now. She would have to wait till the morning to receive word from her son. Though he certainly had more to say now.

"I should have you pay for the cleaning of this you know." Louis gestured angrily to his own cloak, coated as it was with feathers and droppings. If it weren't so bloody cold he would have removed it immediately. "It can't just go in with the normal wash. If the elves around here can't keep a floor clean I'd hate to see what they do to quality fabric and fur!"

Elton was a bit miffed that his cloak had been torn he had just gotten it! Now he'd have to get it patched. He knew his mother wouldn't be pleased to learn that he had already torn his brand new cloak. He sighed and fingered the hole for a moment.

He glanced up at the other boy, relieved quite a bit to learn that he didn't have blood on his back. Then a thought fluttered through his head. "Does it look like I have puncture holes in my back? Sometimes they don't bleed right away." he added, remembering when his brother had gotten a fork through his hand at the dinner table.

Elton grimaced to see how disgusting the other's letter had become. It looked as though it had been written with much care, and now it looked horrible. It was probably to the boy's mother.

"Pay?" Elton wrung his damaged cloak in his hands. He hardly had any money to speak of. He supposed he could always ask for some allowance money early in order to pay for the cleaning..but didn't know if he'd get it. His parents had enough people to feed at home that they really couldn't afford to send him much money for any extras.
"I could give you what money I do have to help if you'd like. It's not much though, I have a pretty big family and I don't get much extra money for things." Elton confessed finally noticing that the other's cloak and furs were extravagant.

Louis rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'd be more worried about a hole in your head." He sighed. "No I don't see any bloody holes and yes pay! You think I'm going to let a clumsy oaf like you get away with ruining my cloak?" His lips pursed. Bloody hell this boy was poor too. What was it about Gryffindor that seemed to draw such unsavory students? He was surprised Hufflepuff had the worst reputation. They at least at least had an admirable work ethic. Gryffindor on the other hand seemed to let in any old riff raff that walked by.

"Fine. Keep your money. You can repay me for the expenses some other way. Tell me. What is your name?" He folded his cloak carefully, tucking the filthy edges inwards so they wouldn't brush against his clothing. His pants would need washing as well... but there was nothing he could do about that right now. At least those he could leave to the elves. The ruined scroll was tucked into a pocket within the cloak and as he awaited the boys answer he felt around absentmindedly, searching for his wand.

Elton frowned, what had the Slytherin just said? He nearly panicked and reached up to feel his head, only to realize that the other boy was just being a jerk. He lowered his half raised hand and glared back at him. Clumsy was he? Well..he could show him clumsy. Elton had the gumption to grab a handful of bird crap and smear it all over the slimy slytherin, then he'd actually resemble the name more.

"Well thank you, ever so much." Elton replied sarcastically.
"You're ever so kind."

He wasn't a bit surprised that the other was nasty, he had heard stories that Slytherins were horrible. He had been rather fortunate to not have had any encounters with any up until now. Elton wanted to be a jerk back to him, but decided that probably wasn't smart. "Elton Bligh." He returned shortly, eyeing the other closely.

Such a stuck up prissy boy. He was probably spoiled to death and got everything he wanted. This just made Elton hate him all the more. Finally..he had an enemy.

He did manage to notice the other was feeling around for his wand and bristled up at the sight.
PostPosted: Sat Jul 07, 2012 10:05 pm

"Louis Auria. My family just moved here from Sicily. Bligh...what kind of name is that? Where are you from?" It wasn't a name he recognized, but then again he wasn't familiar with all of England's wizarding families. He'd include that in his new letter to his mother. She was a former Hogwarts student, she may know of the Blighs and if their son was worth keeping an eye on.

He frowned in confusion as he opened his cloak and shook it out. No wand. He folded it back up just as carefully as before and started scanning the floor. There was concern but no panic yet. The yellow wood would not be easy to spot among the straw littering the floor though. In his distraction he responded. "Of course I'm kind. I'm not going to take the last knut from your pockets. No. I'll figure out how you can repay me and let you know soon enough." He hadn't had his wand long enough to feel naked without it but it was embarrassing that he'd dropped it and couldn't find it.

Elton pursed his lips together. He wasn't about to tell this boy anything about him..if he could help it.
"Bligh is from the old English and means "fair" or "white", and yes I am aware of how ironic it is. I was adopted into the Bligh family." He replied folding his arms over his chest and shaking some stray dreadlocks out of his face.

Elton noticed that the other boy was a bit confused and annoyed about something. Perhaps he had lost his wand in the straw after the fall? Elton held back a laugh about that. "Well thank you ever so much for that small kindness." He replied tossing his hair and glancing around the floor discretely. It took him all of five seconds for his keen eye to notice the yellow wand laying in the snow out by the front door.

Should he point it out? Or just not say anything? He frowned slightly, trying to figure it out.
"I think what you are looking for is behind you by the front door." He said pointing towards the fallen wand.

He figured that giving Louis a hand at finding his wand would be his good deed for the day. And perhaps the other would let him go without wasting any more of his time.
