I have my betta in a 2 gallon fish bowl. I don't have enough room for a tank, nor do I have the money. What can I do?

I have tons of java moss in my fish bowl.

Honestly, the idea of 'not enough money' is pretty bleh, considering that plastic storage totes work perfectly fine and will cost, at most, 5 dollars (If you don't already have one laying around your house, that is). The "there's no room "idea is sort of iffy too...all you need is at least a 2.5 gallon tank for it to be safely heated, and square/rectangular enclosures are wayyy more space-efficient than round or fancy-shaped enclosures like bowls. So if someone has the room for a bowl, it makes me wonder why can't they have enough room for a real tank? And shoot, worst case scenario you have to put the tank in a less-than-pleasing spot...maybe on the floor, in your closet, etc instead of on a pretty stand or whatever. The fish's health is of more concern than aesthetics.
The problem with bowls is that they can't be heated. Bettas are tropical fish and they /need/ to be kept at tropical temperatures of 76-80. Yes, I do believe it is bad for them to be kept at anything lower than these temperatures. You have to remember, fish as a whole are cold-blooded (exothermic) animals. Not giving them the temps they require is like not giving reptiles the temps they require...it's bad for their health. If someone was keeping a bearded dragon wayy lower than their recommended temps, the beardie wouldn't be healthy and herp lovers would be pretty sad and disappointed, right? Well, same there here.
You aren't a horrible person by any means, but if your Betta is living in an unheated, unfiltered, way too tiny bowl, then it means that there is a lot of improvement to make.

WalMart has Tetra 3i filters. They are $10. PetCo can Hagen submersible heater pads, that you burry under the gravel. They are $10 as well. Its easy to save up $20. You'll have it in no time smile

if your room is warm enough you dont really NEED a filter in a tank that small. when i was living at my dad's house i had all my reptiles in my room so it was almost always around 80 degrees and the fish water was in the mid 70s

To be honest, it is not a good idea to have Bettas in a vase like that with the plants up there, because Bettas HAVE to have access to the surface of the water, they are lung breathers, and have to get fresh air.

Don't beat yourself up for it. A lot of people make these mistakes and were never informed about it. At least you know now what you need to do to improve your fish's life then later after the fish passes away.
Do not buy the Tetra Aquarium Starter Kit, 5 Gallons in Walmart! The light in the lid does not last long, at all! If you buy a lid in another store and try to fit it in the tank, it will be a few inches too small or big. It's caca, don't buy it. Unless you're fine without a light.
You can go find some cheap cheap tanks on craigslist. If not, you can go with Akari_32's advice.

I have one, a 10 gallon kit, thats 5 years old, and its still kicking. The filter finally died, after 4 1/2 years, but everything else still works. You just got a dud wink
