Short Summary of their plotline:
Crousader and Amarinne have certainly had their rough spots. It may be something of a mystery to outsiders why they have remained loyal to one another, but those who have come to know the couple have realized that what really binds them is trust. Through thick and thin (and there have been ample amounts of both!) Crousader has remained at his mates side when she falters, and Amarinne has stood firm beside him when the devils of his own making came home to roost. He, the hateful and distrustful stallion loathing both himself and females... and she, the broken and lost priestess searching for something to believe in again. They understand and accept one another completely, though both often struggle to explain the other to their strong-willed children, and this has led to several major family disputes.
One such dispute caused what looked to be (at the time) a final sundering of the Sky Horse family group, and marked the first time Amarinne herself fought her mate. Tiarnan, their oldest son from their second brood, was everything Crousader thought he wanted. An alicorn, the young colt possessed both the wings of his father and the healing abilities of his mother, but there was no convincing the youngster that his strength would be better spent fighting. Comparatively, the oldest daughter, Seresai, from their first brood, was mentally willing and physically able to take up her fathers martial mantle... but following her younger brother's graduation from colt-hood, everything she thought she had (her fathers love, respect, and training) was gone. Desperate to regain her father's regard, Seres took some incredible risks, even going on a long journey with her eccentric mentor to a far off desert city, in an attempt to prove her worth. When that failed, she turned on her young brother, who only retreated further into his growing shell as the pressures mounted on him to be someone he wasn't.
In the end, Tiarnan abandoned the herd, flying as far away as his wings could take him. The loss was felt keenly by his sister as Seres realized both her part in what had happened, and the faults of her own father which were slowly becoming her own. After seeking her mothers counsel, she too left in pursuit of her brother... leaving behind an angry Crousader who vowed to 'set them both straight' when they returned. And it was that which set Amarinne against him, the culmination of 'my way or the highway' that had slowly driven their entire family into deserting them. What went on between the pair has stayed between them, but Crousader went on a journey of his own once his children returned and the beginnings of reconciliation were allowed to be planted, and the pressing matters of the herd were resolved (no small feat, considering those 'pressing matters' included those several aggressive skinwalkers responsible for the death of Otaikimmio'tokaan.)
Now Crousader has returned from his journey back to his old herd, the one he led prior to his capture, bringing with him a young Angeni by the name of Tylen, (custom in progress via Sirenz) who is himself a wandering spirit in search of something greater. The seeds planted prior have begun to sprout, and he enjoys a new relationship with his eldest offspring, Seresai, who has become the kind of leader he can respect.
What are their Parents Personalities?
Mother: Mysterious;
Amarinne is, at her heart, a warm and caring individual. She suffered from poor self esteem and lack of purpose most of her life, and is still prone to 'falling off the wagon' so-to-speak, but if there is one thing she does believe in... it is the good she is capable of doing. She is a healer, first and foremost, and can become quite fierce if she believes she can prevent harm from being done to others. Initially a naive and confused young mare, Amarinne has gradually matured into a quietly refined mare with a strong sense of self and a heightened spiritual awareness that focuses on and sympathizes with those of a basically good nature who are conflicted either through training or life's hard edges. She has an edge to her now, with the birth of her children and the very real threat the world poses for them, though she still tries to maintain an optimistic outlook for their sakes.
Father: Distrustful;
Crousader is not a nice fellow, nor does he hand out praise or warm fuzzy feelings often. He has had a rough life, and still wears the scars from it. Hosting a perpetual stick up his craw, he is not the easiest soquili to even be within sight of. He cares little for those he has deemed unworthy or 'weird' and has precious little tolerance for fools. Though he is capable of loving and of showing affection, he rarely displays those traits as they have caused him a great deal of grief in the past. One cannot question his honor or basic moral integrity though, as he holds himself to a high standard that often conflicts with the personal feelings of those he loves. He stands true though, still finding a way to uphold both the law and his 'humanity.'

What is their family dynamics?
Crousader is firmly traditional, and has only just recently accepted the role of his oldest (a daughter) as Protector, and that of his son (one of his youngest) as a simple traveling Healer. For her part, Amarinne strives to balance her mates shortcomings, encouraging her children in their endeavors (even when they do not agree with Crousader's ideals) and smooth over the inevitable fights. They have another daughter, Amerlei, who has wandered off to places unknown (a fact that has hit Amarinne particularly hard) and another son, Galahad, who has also wandered into the company of the Angeni of Redemption, but makes a point of checking in periodically. Perhaps it says something about the tension that irrevocably marked the early years of the family that three out of four children are wanderers, but both Crousader and Amarinne feel that they will do better by their future children and grandchildren. The events that turned the Elderwillow soquili into the Cerezo have changed them both dramatically, especially following the death of Otaikimmio'tokaan. Crousader's retirement from actively patrolling the herdlands and spending more time training young stallions and mares in defense, in addition to doing so in conjunction with young human warriors, has also had it's impact on the old codger.
Traditions:
Belonging to the Cerezo Band of the greater Tiabi Herd, the Sky Horses are (together with the Fire Horses) the backbone of the Cerezo. They are no strangers to strife, both external and internal, and it will take something far more powerful than a mere skinwalker threat to break them. Fighting is their specialty, both offensive, defensive, and support... and they have a long tradition of fighting particularly well when paired with sharp-eyed human archers.
Herd/Family culture:
Battle. The Sky Horse family wears a heavy mantle of martial pride and physical prowess. Their patriarchs fighting style was forged in the pits of a distant Roman-esque city where he battled for his life and that of his young human companion (himself a slave) to the amusement of the local population. All youngsters are taught the basics of self defense, with those possessing the ability to heal taught by their mother how to serve both themselves when injured and their community.
Religious Beliefs:
What religion is practiced has been passed down from Amarinne, who was herself a priestess of the Spirit of Fertility for quite some time before meeting Crousader. It should be noted, however, that she does not teach what was taught to her. Her former herd believed that it was only through beauty (female beauty, in particular) that the Spirit would be appeased... and they sent out the loveliest of their priestesses to win the hearts of suitable stallions and bring them back to the Herd for ... stud services. It is unknown what happened to such stallions when their services were no longer needed and they refused to be castrated in order to 'preserve their initial beauty,' but there was a nearby herd of Kalona who seldom felt the need to travel far. The act of flirting, courtship, mating, and producing offspring were dramatized and elevated into an art form, with Amarinne being one of their most promising students. Luckily for her, she fell on hard times and slowly began to question those old beliefs... and found a handsome young stallion who looked beneath the bedraggled mess she had become to see the mare who was more then a priestess from some twisted herd.
She does still believe in the Spirit of Fertility, and holds a special place in her heart for that deity since she truly enjoys being a mother, but she teaches her children to respect and admire all of the Great Spirits, and seek those particular guiding lights that speak to them individually. |
