Kodate Kago

Kaisho Fuyuki ~ Interviewer.

A half-open window, with bamboo slat blinds adjusted accordingly, allowed the bright light from outside to flood Kaisho’s office quarters, filling it gradually with natural warmth in the process. A selection of documents, neatly piled and aptly organised, were waiting directly in front of the chair Kaisho sat at on his side of the office desk. The room itself was designed to exude an inviting ambience to those that entered, since a Captain’s office generally instils apprehension from their subordinates, with the exception of the Captain’s second-in-command in most cases. On both sides of the desk, there was a single sakazuki cup, filled with water and topped with a floating Japanese iris petal. The only piece missing from what was otherwise a complete office was the main occupant of the office himself. Kaisho was waiting outside the doors of his private building, as his office was actually part of a private residential area within the Seventh Squad grounds.

He sat on the small steps, looking casually out to the iris flowers lining the path leading out of his residence, admiring them. He was awaiting a candidate for Captaincy; a man by the name of Kago Kodate. After a few minutes had passed, Kaisho motioned from his seat on the steps, and moved to inspect the flowers. He began to run a careful hand through the flowers, his fingertips lightly brushing the silky petals that bloomed before kneeling in closer to breathe in their soft scent. Just then, his eyes averted slowly from the flowers and focussed on the end of the walkway. “I’m glad you were able to get here...” Kaisho projected down the walkway. There was nobody there; at least not when he spoke, but they were very close. He could feel their presence.

Kodate stopped for a second at the corner as he heard someone speak. It made his whole body jump just a little because despite himself he knew it was directed towards him. He took a breath to calm himself and he took a long step forward, exposing his frame from the cover of the corner to come into full view of the captain. Not like he had anything to hide, he was just surprised by the voice right as he was about to cross the threshold. He stood tall, much taller than the blonde man before him. His short, cropped chocolate hair almost reached the top of the wall next to him, and his stubble denoted an advanced age. He looked much older and stronger than the Captain before him, but if there was one place where appearances didn't matter at all it was the Seireitei. Kodate knew full well that the younger-looking individual before him was much stronger than he was. He could feel it in the air. He knew he wasn't trying to do so, but just the ambient sensation of the man's spiritual pressure on the air gave him pause.

"I am as well." Kodate mused, trying his best to keep the mood light without seeming careless. He stepped up close to the Captain, a hand subconsciously going to the strap across his chest as he came to rest a good step or so away from the man. He bowed then, pulling his body as low to the ground as he could before raising it once more. "I thank you for the opportunity to speak today, and I hope that I may meet your expectations." He smiled, his malachite eyes glimmering in the day's light. "I was expecting a whitewashed office, not this place of beauty."

As Kodate finally came into to view at the end of the hallway, Kaisho was rather surprised at the size and stature of the Shinigami entering his premises. Kodate was noticeably taller, and his physique was much broader to add. Kaisho could not argue with the physical presence Kodate exuded, which was very important to have within the Sereitei. Kodate took a moment to bow to the Captain, a bow that Kaisho found to be exceptionally low. Kaisho was humble about such gestures, but was grateful that he made the effort. “A little more subtlety would have been fine. It isn’t like you are addressing the Captain Commander, after all.” Kaisho smiled, a short, soft chortle passing his partly open lips. Kodate commended Kaisho on his residence, which gave the Captain an uplifting sense of pride. “It was build for welcoming my subordinates and guests, rather than to drive them away. Your words bolster that ethic, I thank you.” Kaisho replied favourably, bowing subtly to Kodate. “Please.... this way. We shall talk more in the office itself.”

Kaisho gestured a stretch hand to the door, and began to walk the short distance to it. Reaching the last step, Kaisho removed his sandals, and neatly placed them on the last step before entering. The Captain guided Kodate through the area he designed especially to hold private dinner parties for his seated officers to attend, before eventually making their way into his office. “There is a cup of water on the desk for you, just try not to swallow the Iris petal floating on top.” Kaisho stated, making his way to the seat behind his desk. He waited patiently while Kodate settled himself, taking a slow sip from his own cup of water. “When you are ready, I would like you to give me a quick introduction of yourself; your name and current position within Sereitei, to be more precise. Although anything you would like to add would be most welcomed, also.” Kaisho began with a smile. Whether Kodate knew it or not, Kaisho had begun his assessment long before entering his office, but made him aware he was particularly attentive now.

One would not have assumed Kodate to follow as silently as he did, but he managed to accomplish it without much effort. His bright green eyes flitted to and fro from all the sights to see in this marvelous place. This was shaping up to be much nicer than he anticipated. He couldn't help but smirk a little as he surveyed everything about this office. It seemed like a very nice place to be. The air here was softer, and less threatening than that of the world outside. It felt completely separated from the Seireitei. Kodate enjoyed it immensely. He took off his sandals as well, placing them beside the Captain's. He noticed the vast difference of shoe size, but it was something he had grown used to and paid it only enough notice to look at it for more than a second before he continued to follow his superior.

Walking through the rooms of this place gave him an overwhelming sense of awe. He remembered what he was told in the Academy, that Captains were the elite of the elite and very rarely strayed from protocol. This place didn't seem like the traditional Captain's office at all, and he relished it. What was the point of following protocol when it was so mundane, and so pointless as to dictate proper housing? Kodate was silent, but not mindless, as he followed Kaisho through the building, making their way to his office.

Kodate sat down in the chair, mindful of the fact that the sides were squeezing against his hips rather awkwardly. It happened often because of his unusual size. But he made no outward complaint, but he was sure it would stick to him if he tried to stand up too suddenly. The sudden thought of that made his eyes darken, and he immediately focused on the cup of water in front of him as he tried to calm that thought. The idea of making a fool of himself wasn't a happy one. Instead he took the cup and sipped from it as well, feeling the petal dance against his lip. He set the cup down after the Captain had finished his question, and nodded.

"My name is Kago Kodate, of the Kago Clan." He powered through the sentence, tacking on that last part not because he wanted to, but because he had to. No matter how strong the man, painful memories were hard to get over. "I am the Fifth Seat of the Tenth Division." He pondered what else he could add to begin with, but after a second or two of silence decided against it. "I feel that to add more would be boastful. I do not wish to be seen as a boastful man. I am confident in my abilities, but not prideful." Kodate added, his eyes meeting Kaisho's for only a short while before they respectfully glanced down at the slowly moving petal in his water. His hands crossed into his lap, the strap across his torso fitting comfortably for the time being. Kaisho would probably be able to see the shield across his back with extreme clarity now that Kodate was seated.

"Although I will answer any questions with complete honesty."
