User Image
Name: Fuyuki, Kaisho.

Nickname(s)/Alias(es): Kai-san, but Kai is also fine.
Race: Shinigami
Age: 63
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 143 lbs
Rank: Seventh Squad Captain.

Physical Description:
Kaisho has greyish-blue eyes that look rather icy, and light blonde hair. He has a fringe that parts in the centre with rather messy hair. His shinigami uniform consists of a sleeveless black kosode, black hakama and white decorative sash tied around his abdomen, he also wears fingerless gloves that reach halfway up his forearm, which have metal wristlets to protect his wrists. He used to wear a pair of Geta, but has reverted back to normal sandals. He has a slim, yet defined stature with toned legs that look quite muscular around the calves. He looks to be around 17, but has spent some time in Rukongai and the Sereitei.

Personality:
Kaisho is a calm, kind, modest person who speaks to people with respect, regardless of their status inside or outside the realm of Soul Society. He shows compassion to those who are in difficult or upsetting situations, and is sometimes a voice of reason to those who give in to their emotions, or think too much of what bad things others would say. Kaisho likes to would rather relax or take a stroll outside than do paperwork or train. However, he has the capacity to perform his duties shockingly well, which often has fellow Shinigami wondering why he never gives 100% all of the time. However, Kaisho does feel agitated when he notices other’s being disrespectful or are not performing at their best when they train, resorting to condescending remarks if earlier warnings on their actions or attitude are not heeded.

During battle, Kaisho retains his etiquette against friend and foe alike. He will only battle when there is a specific reason for him to do so, whatever that reason may be to him at the time. He enjoys having a little warm up with his opponents, especially those he is inveitably has to fight to the death. Kaisho would rather not kill his foes, as he tends to reason with them during his “play-time”, trying to fathom why it is so essential for one race to annihilate the other. However, once he has seen enough he will attack, and attack with callous ferocity, until either he or his opponent falls or flees. If their resolve is not peaceful or one that threatens the existence of Humans or Shinigami, he will kill in the hope that if they happen to survive, that they change their ways for next time.

Zanpakutō:

Kaisho’s unreleased Zanpakutō is in the form of a wakizashi. The wakizashi has a single-edged blade 14 inches in length, and a 9-inch handle. The handle and scabbard are arctic blue in colour. There is a slight curve to the blade.

Shikai: Kangetsu (寒月), Wintry Moon

Release Command: “Canter”

Upon Kangetsu's release, considerable changes to the shape and look of the blade occur. Its size increases greatly, becoming around 48 inches long with a 36-inch blade. Six small, silver rings position evenly across the back of the blade, each having a short tassel drooping from them. There is also a tassel hanging from a silver pommel, and all are of the same colour as the handle, which remains the same. The style and broadness of the blade is considered similar to one of Shunsui Kyoraku's Shikai Scimitars.

Shikai Abilities:

Kangetsu's initial ability increases his already impressive Spiritual Energy by quite a lot, and his core abilities increase exponentially to match his new level of energy. In addition, Kaisho gains affinity to ice and with that a greater amount of spiritual energy. These allow him to perform ice-based attacks that are similar to Kidō. Another ability is that the sword can form frost on the inside and sometimes the surrounding area of any cut it inflicts on the foe.

Special Attacks:
Shiro Enko (白円弧) ; White Arc.
The name of the attack that sends a wave of cold energy at the foe. As with the sword's ability, this too can form frost in and over a wound if it cuts.

Tsuibi Hyouchuu (追尾氷柱) ; Pursuing Icicle.
Announcing the name of this attack activates the tassels, allowing them to shoot streams of ice from each tassel that Kaisho can use to pierce (Heki ; 劈), or to snare/grasp (gaten ; 合点) his foe on numerous parts of the body.

Bankai: Soudai Shiro Kangetsu (壮大白寒月); Splendid White Wintry Moon.

When in its bankai form, the blade becomes a shorter, glorified wakizashi with a blade of around 16 inches in length, whilst the hilt remains the same size. The tassels on the back edge of the blade disappear, but the bottom one lengthens by a factor of six to compensate, and is as white as snow. Also, the six rings disappear from the back of the blade but also join the pommel, layered one on top of the other around the tassel's base.

Bankai Abilities:

Upon release, the surrounding environment (400m radius) cools significantly, accompanied by a chilling haze (300m radius) that glazes anything it touches in a layer of frost. Not actually harming in any way, unless the foes are super weak.

His spiritual powers are enhanced further, and due to the condensed state of the Bankai, energy leakage is brought to a minimum. The Shikai ability of leaving a layer of frost in and over an open wound still remains, although the process is much quicker than before. Both Shikai abilities are also retained, although Tsuibi Hyouchuu works a little differently, and Shiro Enko is much more concentrated.

Special Abilities:
Tsuibi Hyouchuu (追尾氷柱) ; Pursuing Icicle.
Though with only one tassel, this special ability works in the same manner, however, the ice can split numerous times. The icicles can split to as many strands of tassel necessary, but the damage inflicted is drastically lessened. A single strand would barely pin p***k the foe's body, and the bleeding would stop as soon as it began.

Shitsuyou Sekka (執拗雪花) ; Persistent Snowflakes.
A new introduction to Kangetsu's abilities comes from the realisation that the tassel strands in Bankai are in fact composed of tiny snowflake segments. This ability allows these strands to separate and are generally used to pursue the foe in order to cut them. Each created snowflake is the formation of a single strand of the tassel curling up into a thin disc-like shape that is very cold and sharp.

Joushou Hyouchuu (上昇氷柱) ; Rising Icicles.
When Shitsuyou Sekka is activated, Kaisho can gather the snowflakes underneath his feet. This forms a platform of ice and frost that covers a 10 metre radius, and when Soudai Shiro Kangetsu is plunged into the ice, Kaisho widens this field to 25-35 metres in radius by applying his reiatsu to it. Then, as the attack is announced, a rippling wave of icicles begin to rapidly force their way out of the platform of ice. These icicles are spread a foot apart, are 7 feet in length, slant outwards at 30 degrees, and at the very base are roughly 9 inches wide. The tip of these icicles are so sharp, and the force of the icicles bursting out so explosive, that they could easily pierce through the Hierro of the average Espada. The shaft's ice structure is very tough to snap, even Captain level Shinigami with a superior level of brute strength would need to apply some effort to snap one, whilst others less adept would need to apply a fraction of their reiatsu to their strength for the same result.

Kaisho could make this field much larger, being capable of spanning it's radius to 200 metres. In doing so, however, it wastes nearly all of Kaisho's reiatsu, so a much smaller field of effect is used. It is an extremely powerful move, used to catch the opponent off-guard or to kill large crowds.

Accessories:
Over the years, Kaisho has acquired a number of capes, scarves and sashes that he sometimes wears with his normal attire. Those include a teal coloured and a royal blue coloured cape, a midnight blue sash and a navy scarf.

As a Captain, he keeps various training equipment in his office, which he sometimes uses or takes when training his subordinates. It means he often carries a large bag with him to carry it all, and almost anything he needs to cater for the training he is giving to another Shinigami is in there.

Skills:
- Shunpo.
- Leopard Style Kung Fu.
- Aikido.
- Boxing.

Bakudo #1, Sai (Restrain): Locks a target's arms in place behind their back.
Incantation: Unknown.

Bakudo #4, Hainawa (Crawling Rope): An energy rope entangles the target's arms.

- Hado #11 ~ Tsuzuri Raiden. -
- Hado #31 ~ Shakkaho. -
- Hado #33 ~ Soukatsui.

Abilities:

Athletic and Durable: Kaisho is astoundingly athletic in nature, so his speed, reflexes, agility and stamina are all well above average of a normal soul, only augmented by his training as a Shinigami. Even as a human, his friends stated that he had more energy than his body could effectively cope with. He also sustains a great number of injuries whilst still being able to fight effectively, as seen when he defeated a GENESIS knight despite being brutally impaled on its weapon and slashed from shoulder to hip from behind.

Keen Strategist: Kaisho's intellect is something worth considering too, as he has shown instances in and outside of battle that he takes numerous ideas and situations into account. In a mission he led, he was able to deduce that Hakuda and Zanjutsu were the only methods of combat sensible for a Hollow (Pauerles) that could seal reiryoku and fight from long range. He also held Pauerles in place so that a comrade could cut off a set of tentacles he ordered him to remove, so that it was easier for his team to deal with long-ranged combat.

Intermediate Kido User: Kaisho's Kido is not fantastically powerful or plentiful, but knows a moderate number of spells, and can use them in conjunction with his hand to hand combat with good results, such as maintaining Seki on both hands to augment his blocking strength.

Expert Hand to Hand Combatant: While nimble and perceptive, he lacks the raw physical strength possessed by other Shinigami, especially when compared to his former Captain, Bullene Katsurou. However, his movements are explosive, and while that does not exempt him from being overwhelmed by raw power, it makes it easier to injure and parry physically stronger foes. This, combined with his reflexes and agility, making him rather well-suited for hand to hand combat. He knows a number of Martial Arts Styles, those being Aikido, Boxing and Leopard Style Kung Fu.

Biography/History:
Kaisho was born outside of Karakura Town, but moved close to the school when he was 4. His parents were rich in the area, but this did not reflect on his upbringing, as he never got any special treatment from them. His sister, born 3 years after him, would often act more spoiled, but he usually scorned her for acting so bratty, telling her to be thankful of the life she has. He became spiritually aware shortly after moving to Karakura Town, but refrained from telling anyone. That is, until his sister pointed out that she felt like someone had been staring at her, to which he assured her that he could see a man beside her. She panicked, but Kaisho assured her that he meant no harm.

He got along well at school, not a fantastic student due to his rather lazy attitude, but would always score high in important exams. Outside of school, however, he was very active and willing to enjoy sports. He used to play a lot of soccer when he reached the age of 10, and gained many friends in doing so, and frequently spent time horse riding, much to the delight of the girls. His favourite horse was one he named personally after a name whispered in a dream: Midnight Haze. At weekends, he joined kendo and karate practice, and managed to get to within three belts of a black belt within four years.

On the day he died, a massive snowstorm hit Karakura Town. This would have been ordinary in winter, but seeing that he died in April, everyone was stunned at the sudden weather change on such a tragic day, people believing that his energy caused it. Kaisho died when he was 17 in a bus accident, on the way to a soccer match out of town. He became a Plus, spending his days watching protectively over his sister, who grieved for him everyday. He would often sit by her side, her spiritual awareness recognising his presence. He would also go to see his favourite horse, which whinnied whenever he arrived at the stableyard.

Soon however, his strong spiritual presence gave an encounter with a Hollow, which he fought to protect his family. Luckily, his athletic prowess and karate managed to lead to him being able to fend off the Hollow until help arrived in the form of a Shinigami, albeit by then he was unable to move his broken right arm, and suffered a gash to his right side. The Shinigami commended him on how he faired unarmed, and stated that he had promise as a Shinigami. Citing that his energy would only bring danger to his sister, he allowed the Shingami to perform a soul burial, and his next memory was living in Rukongai district 32.

For a while, he lived on his own, doing rebuilding work to get some money together for food and shelter. He had a rougher time with some of the locals, who would try to pick fights upon hearing of his bout with a hollow. Often he would decline, but just to curb his curiosity he eventually decided to accept, ending his fights with a single blow or by simply outmanoeuvring and outlasting his opponent. From that point on, he vowed that if he ever came across a member of Sereitei, he would ask to become a Shinigami.

One day, a Shinigami came to patrol District 32. As Kaisho went to see who it was, the mere reiatsu made him feel extremely nauseous and hungry. Noticing him in this state, the Shinigami presented him with food and drink. Surprised to find that the Shinigami was the same one that saved him, Kaisho took this opportunity to ask to become a Shinigami, and the Shinigami had him enlisted soon after.

Kido Honing Practice: Full.

~~~~~~
Kaisho looked around the training grounds, a large bag in hand, eyeing the other shinigami from the other squads as they trained hard honing their kidō. Kaisho thought long and hard on the kidō skill he wanted to hone, but did not seem quite sure. He was tactical with Bakudō, but based on his rank battle with Aizakku a month earlier, he did sense a lack of potency and efficiency. With his decision settled, the newly appointed Fifth Seat immediately commenced his training, setting his bag and Zanpakuto down next to him.
Without another Shinigami present to use them on, Kaisho could only practice Sai and Hainawa using himself as the target, and Seki on various objects and obstacles. Firstly, Kaisho sat for a moment, wondering how he could to this, his thoughts trailing from one idea to the next until he came up with a conclusion. Kaisho held his arms out in front of him and close to one another, ready for his training.
“Bakudo #4, Hainawa!” Kaisho said aloud, as the energy rope formed from his hands and twirled tightly around his wrists. Satisfied with its strength, tested by trying to move his arms apart, he decided to try to break free from it. Within a few seconds, Kaisho was able to break free with a little effort; a sign that the energy used to create it was not enough. He tried again, and the same thing occurred. Kaisho was finding self-tutoring rather baffling at this point, trying repeatedly to improve, but not having much of an effect.
After a few hours of trying, Kaisho felt tired. He had used about a hundred or so Hainawa’s, and his wrists ached from breaking free so many times. Kaisho realised that it was time for a different angle of practice. He thought about it, and thought that maybe some visualisation tactics would help somewhat. Before he tried this out, though, he thought it was time to have some food to replenish the energy he lost. Pulling a large box of meat buns and rice cakes from his bag, he proceeded to eat, sipping on a small bottle of sake that he fumbled out of the bag too.
Kaisho had finished his meal, and as soon as he had done so, he decided to get under way with Kido practice. He recited silent words as he prepared for the second part of his training regime, his mind working on how to visualise the forming of reiatsu within his Hainawa. Again he colllected his stance and held his wrists slightly in front of him, dlosing his eyes and emphasising the wording of the spell intensely.
"Bakudo #4: Hainawa!" Kaisho said intensely.
The yellow rope flickered into being, swirling powerfully around his wrists with a firm grip, almost burning into Kaisho's skin as the Kido coiled. This time, the binding spell had moulded quite nicely, and when Kaisho tugged his wrists apart, he could feel the difference in tensile strength immediately. Breaking Hainawa came as more of a challenge too, as he would now have to try a good few minutes at a time to break free, usually fading away before he could actually break it.
It took focus, as well as energy and skill, to maintain Kido. Trying so hard to break the spell meant his focus was diverted elsewhere, discovering the problem of not being able to split his focus properly. Before Kaisho could get any closer to solving this problem, despite practicing for hours on just this one spell, night began to draw in.
Kaisho decided enough was enough that day, as he grabbed his belongings and his Zanpakuto. At his wazikashi, he stared... a faint feeling of yearning in his heart. He longed to learn the name of his Zanpakuto, eager to see the spirit and the powers that lie dormant for him to share. However, that faint yearning sharply followed with the fact that he was not truly ready for their encounter, not yet at least.
"Hopefully I can sharpen up my Kido before we finally meet, dear Zanpakuto..." He whispered as he tied it tangent to his obi sash.
With everything he had taken with him, Kaisho made his way back to the Squad 7 barracks, planning tomorrow's honing session as he walked steadily.
After a peaceful night of sleep, Kaisho returned to the Kido training grounds to work on his spells. He wanted to practice once more on his Hainawa before he moved onto something else. He limbered up before training, and practiced his reishi gathering by performing Byakurai, shooting it high into the air without use of an incantation or name. As expected, it was extremely weak, but this was purely a warm up to get his spiritual energy circulating nicely. Kaisho did this a few times, each getting more powerful, but always significantly weaker than with the announcement of its name at least.
Once Kaisho had satisfied himself in the warm up, he focussed his mind on one more attempt at Hainawa. He resumed the position he took from yesterday and recited the name of the binding spell clearly, though not closing his eyes this time. Soon, Hainawa began its formation and wrapped around Kaisho's wrists, binding them in place.
His mind mulled over how he would break free of this, as it was clear that strength alone was never enough, especially in Kaisho's case. He thoguht back to his seating battle with Aizakku, and realised that he used a burst of reiatsu to break the same Kido spell. With that in mind, Kaisho tried to gather reiatsu around his wrists. However, gathering reiatsu around a specific point rather than a full-body emission was difficult enough, but after an hour or so of trial and error, managed to successfully break free... much to his relief.
"Well, that certainly was a challenge..." Kaisho said to himself, sweeping away beads of sweat from his brow. "Now onto something else."
(After making his way to Squad 5...)
After making his way from the Kido Honing grounds, Kaisho wandered into the Fifth Squad's barracks, requesting the aid of a 5th Squad Shinigami to help hone his Kido, as working alone had its disadvantages. Thankfully for the Seventh Squad's Fifth Seat, they agreed to allow him to use the squad's very own training grounds. They introduced him to Genji Kazemaru, to which both seemed to feel comfortable talking to one another.
After the ice-breaker session, Genji asked Kaisho to wait for him at the training grounds while he ran some errands. Genji took particular care in highlighting that he should not use any Kido unsupervised. Kaisho nodded, respecting the rules of Squad 5 just as he would for his own, and proceeded to the Training Grounds. There, Kaisho relaxed in the glade with his hand behind his head gazing up at the passing clouds.
Time seemed to pass slowly, but Kaisho did not mind, for it meant that he still had enough of it to make good progress. Kaisho had a feeling that he should probably work on his Kido until Bullene Katsurou, Seventh Squad Captain, found the time to train his subordinates in hand-to-hand combat. However, he pushed that though to the back of his mind, focussing only on honing his current Kido as best he could.
Genji blissfully walked along the path to the training grounds. His head bobbed as he sang a song in his head. It was such a lovely day today, absolutely perfect for exercise. Kaisho was right on time. Genji gave a frendly wave to his new student. Oh! New student. That was a new thought. Genji was going to be teaching someone for the first time. This was a truly fantastic day for both him and his student.
"Hello!" Genji said cheerfully. "It is so nice to be here on such a lovely day, wouldn't you say? Well, either way, I see that you are in need of help in Kido. Which ones are you interested in practicing today?"
Kaisho looked up at the Shinigami walking towards him with a warm smile. He walked towards Genji and waved in response to Genji's earlier gesture, pleased to know that he could commence his training with a skilled Kido Practitioner such as Genji. The two exchanged brief pleasantries before the Fifth Squad member asked the burning question.
"I would like to hone my current skills,and possibly learn a few more Kido Spells along the way..." Kaisho started, feeling very relaxed. "In particular, I would like to improve on Bakudo #8, Seki today. Being a member of Squad 7, I want to improve this because it significantly aids my hand-to-hand combat." Kaisho added, being thorough in his reasoning. He waited for a response intently, as Genji stopped to think.
Genji stroked his chin as his mind shuffled through the names of Kido.
"Ah, yes," said Genji. "Number 8... A good shielding spell. Simple, effective, very useful. We'll start of simple. First things first, Kaishi-san, try to focus on your concentration of reiatsu. Relax and feel it running through your body like the blood in your veins. Let it come natually and then focus it. Got it?
Genji offered sound advice to Kaisho, and with a slight nod of confirmation, began to relax himself. In doing so, he realised that he could feel the ever so slight feeling of soothing reiatsu from both himself and Genji, also feeling the flow of his reiryoku in his body. It circulated in vast amounts, and he laughed a little as he thought about this. Genji pulled a bewildered expression, "Is something wrong?" he asked.
"Its something I seem to remember someone saying... Oddly it sounds like a reference to my days as a human." Kaisho replied, "Something about me having more energy than my body can use up. I can feel what they mean now..."
Both the Shinigami knew that remembering something after their human death and rebirth as a spirit entity was rare, but neither delved into it. More important things were on their mind.
Slowly, Kaisho began to focus his reiryoku, channelling the energy into his hand. At this point, Kaisho seemed to find it easier to gather his energy, now that he had a grasp of what his reiryoku flow felt like. The difficulty came in actually materialising Seki, since he had always relied on the announcement of the spell's name to materialise Kido. Instead of guiding the spirit energy to the spot and performing Kido on his own, and using the name and incantation as a power enhancement, he would actually use them to bring about the Kido, leaving no room for enhancement and greatly reducing his reiryoku's efficency.
Kaisho pressed on, determined to perform Seki without name or incantation, and eventually the persistence paid off. A small round shield formed in the palm of his hand, which he increased in size with short injections of more spirit energy.
Genji happily clapped.
"That is very good," he said joyously. "You have focused your reiatsu well. That is one step. The next step is to maintain it even when pressure is applied. To put it simply, can you keep it up if the shield is struck? I believe it to be an appropiate time to test it. Would you like me to strike, testing your shield's hold?"
Kaisho was glad to hear that his progress was coming along smoothly, and when a mention of hand-to-hand combat came into the equation, Kaisho happily agreed to it. He readied himself as Genji prepared to strike, focussing reiatsu in both of his hands in anticipation of where he would be attacked from. The moment he could tell the side of attack, Kaisho shifted reiatsu over the the corresponding hand and performed Seki in conjunction with his blocking technique, just in time for Genji to strike it with considerable force.
Unfortunately, Kaisho's Seki dissipated under the strength of the attack a second after it struck, and the follow through hit Kaisho's arm. However, Kaisho managed to block the oncoming blow without much trouble, which had been softened by the shielding spell. His arm did get pushed back from the impact thought, although this was just down to lack of hand-to-hand training.
"It seems that my lack of practice both in hand-to-hand combat and Kido is obvious, but I did get the feeling that you wasn't going easy on me." Kaisho smiled, thankful that Genji was not insulting his abilities as a Shinigami
"I think I have an idea," Genji said. "Try to hold up the shield for a longer period to time. I won't attack you. Just try to keep it up. I see the problem may be that you don't have enough practice keeping up your reiatsu. If you have more practice holding up the shield without any outside interference, it will help you keep it up when attacked. What do you think?"
Kaisho stood for a moment, thinking about the suggestion. “I’ll try it out... Thank you Genji-san.” Kaisho replied, and got to work immediately. With Genji watching carefully, Kaisho performed Seki, and just as before he performed it without reciting its name. His reiatsu focussed around his hands and he formed a barrier, this time keeping his reiatsu held in place. Maintaining it was difficult, and after a couple of minutes, Seki dissipated. Unsatisfied, Kaisho continued, spending hours on maintaining the reiatsu shield in his hands until he accustomed to it.
Eventually, Kaisho could maintain Seki in his hands for well over ten minutes without much effort. During his academy days, Kaisho practice in all of the arts frequently, but after graduating and becoming part of 7th Squad he had been neglecting his training somewhat. Controlling his reiatsu for more than just to conceal his presence was replaced by hand-to-hand combat with other shinigami in the squad, but even so, he had become rather lazy.
However, with his new mentality, he reverted to the basics in order to recondition and hone them for better use in the future. With sufficient time spent familiarising himself with his reiatsu, and his basic Kido, Kaisho felt confident that he could put his Kido into practice.
Genji watched his student with a blissful glee. Kaisho was picking up on reiatsu control quite well. The long hours of practice had certainly paid off, for Kaisho was successfully sustaining the shield for several minutes. The sun was beginning to set, and Genji was starting to feel a bit drowsy after monitoring Kaisho for so long.
"You have done very well," Genji said with a smile. "Now, I do believe, you are ready for me to test out the strength of your shield. We'll try a kick, like before, I do not know if you want it soft or hard. Soft would be barefoot; hard would be with a geta sandal. Which do you prefer?"
"I would like that, Genji-san." Kaisho said, "However, would it also be possible for me to practice Seki in a hand-to-hand situation with you... before the night draws in?" He asked, feeling embarrassed about his bold suggestion.
During his academy days, Kaisho found Kido rather intriguing, though not being particularly able to acquire new Kido spells without time and effort. It took him half a year to learn Seki, and in that time he found that there were many factors contributed to its effectiveness. Aptitude was the most dominant factor, as well as the difference in power between the user and the foe.
He had already known about its paralysis effect, but was keen to see if this practice session had inavertedly intensified the effects of Seki, even if it was only able to numb a limb after excessive contact.
"Bakudo #8, Seki!" Kaisho said, focussing his reiatsu on both of his hands and chanting the spell's name with purpose. Naturally, the round shields was much stronger than before, especially with the addition of the announcement. Kaisho also felt comfortable maintaining two shields, different from the long hours where he had trouble maintaining just one.
Genji was very happy with the sturdy look and sparkle of Kaisho's Seki.
"I looks good," said Genji happily. "No let us see if it can hold up, shall we?"
Genji launched a round house kick to the shield and stuck it hard with a wooden sandaled foot. Though he didn't intend for it to be enough to totally rattle Kaisho into injury, it did sent boy skidding back a few inches. Genji felted the paralysis of the spell take effect. He lowed he leg. A joyous smile curled his lips, for the Seki remained formed.
"Fantastic!" cheered Genji, clapping his hands. "You have made glorious headway. Well done! I am very proud, Kaisho-san. You have done very well. Now about that hand-to-hand practice you requested... How would you like to have short spare with me. You can practice that Seki of yours. I think that I will also test how you fare against other sorts of attacks such as weak-strength kido. What do you say?"
Those words brought a slender smile to Kaisho's lips. He had been waiting for a sparring session in hand-to-hand combat for a while, and the added challenge of Kido spells being thrown in made it all the more challenging. From the sound of it, Genji's introduction of Kido seemed more a test of Kaisho's general ability to confront those well-versed in it.
"That's fine, Genji-san." Kaisho laughed, shuffling himself into a crouching stance. His stance was defensive, and his hands were clenched in his tiger palm style. Reiatsu began to form around his hands, as Seki took a bead-like shape and size, which Kaisho only noticed in the corner of his eye. He had not been concentrating on forming Seki, which had surprised him the most, but his long hours of conditioning proved much more effective than he thought.
Whilst Kaisho was marginally distracted by this new finding, Genji had begun the offensive, rushing in fast to engage Kaisho. Noticing the rapidly closing space between them, Kaisho gasped and jumped backwards, away from a punch aimed for his mid-section. From then on, Kaisho began to read Genji's moves analytically.
Genji's attacks were swift, striking at multiple areas in quick succession. Kaisho managed to block all of them with little effort, due to his prowess in the art of Hakuda. Undeterred, Genji aimed for Kaisho's shoulder with a punch, but Kaisho quickly intercepted it, striking the prone side Genji's forearm, between the wrist and extensor muscles. However, this attack was quickly followed by a punch to the stomach, which Kaisho blocked with ease.
Just then, he felt his body's position and realised an opening on the side of his body. His eyes glanced from his and Genji's retreating hands to the exposed area of his body. Indeed, Genji had already pounced upon that opening with an ominous kick. Understanding the situation immediately, Kaisho resorted to...
"Seki!"
Kaisho swung his forearm forcefully, creating the oval shield of reiatsu along the broad side of it to improve his blocking technique. Kaisho's vertically positioned forearm met with Genji's horizontally swinging leg with a clear clap of sound that surged for hundreds of metres. It was then that Kaisho began to use Seki with every strike, as they became stronger.
Thankfully, Kaisho could keep his eye on the attacks without problems, but they were still quick enough to prevent Kaisho amplifying Seki's power with the use of its name. The basic lesson of all Shinigami techniques was harshly enforced upon him; knowing and not knowing the name of a technique greatly affects the technique's strength.
For a few minutes this continued, until Kaisho and Genji strafed away from one another. Both of them were understandably out of breath, but they each shared an admiring smile. "So, how was it, Genji?" Kaisho asked, respiring deeply as he spoke.
Genji was very pleased and showed it with a smile.
"I must say, Kaisho-san," Genji said, "you are doing quite well. This is a great work out for me. I always knew that they trained you well in squad 7. That captain is super, wouldn't you say? Well versed all around. Not many in the specialists squads can say that about themselves. I do believe I'm well versed and well-rounded too, and it is my job here to make sure you are too. I apologize in advance if this startles you to much."
Genji backflipped back. The second he landed on his geta sandals touched the ground...
"Hado #4 White Lightning!"
A low-stength bolt of electricity shot out of his index finger for Kaisho.
Kaisho leapt away from the Byakurai as quickly as he could, but the attack caught his calf on its way through. With a wince, Kaisho landed on the soft ground sporting a small gash across his calf, and the wound burned like fire was dancing inside it. However, Kaisho remained vigilant, and saw Genji moving to his rear flank for another attack. “Hado #4, Byakurai!” Genji hollered, the stream of white lightning blasting from his middle and index finger.
The Kido spell boasted tremendous speed, it almost felt as though evasive manoeuvres were ludicrous to think about, let alone perform. Then again, Kaisho expected nothing less from Genji. Nevertheless, Kaisho’s reflexes saved him from taking a shot through the shoulder, as he strafed away from the white lightning once more. He did not get away as freely as he would have liked, though, the attack nicked his shoulder in passing. The chorus of pain chimed once more, as the attack left another burning sensation behind.
Kaisho did manage to turn and face Genji, who seemed to be assessing his movement speed. Kaisho knew he had been lazy since graduating from the academy, his natural speed could easily evade attack from the likes of unseated members, and any seat below the 10th without knowing Hoho training. But, he realised he could struggle against seated members lower than his own rank, for the same aforementioned reason.
“Keeping on your toes I see, you’re very good at that.” Genji laughed, “But you won’t be avoiding this one.”
Kaisho stood motionless for a moment, bewildered by what Genji was up to, until he could see the hand formation and hear it. The faint, yet chilling sound of an incantation. “Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man!” Kaisho heard; his spine tingled with fear. He gulped hard, yet the knot in his throat refused to go away. He had to think of a way to stop him from using it, or at least slow him down.
“Disintegrate, you black dog of Rodanini! Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own throat!” Kaisho recited immediately, noticing the brief pause as the fiery red orb of energy formed itself in Genji’s hands. “Bakudo #8, Geki!”
Before the next sentence could flow from Genji’s mouth, he found himself engulfed in a red aura that paralysed his movements, preventing the flow of reiatsu into his orb. “Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south!" Genji continued, Geki seemingly overpowered, even with the incantation. However, it gave Kaisho a valuable few seconds of thinking time. Just then, an idea occurred to him.
“Hado #1...” Kaisho said urgently.
“Hado #33...” Genji smiled.
“Sho!”
“Shakkaho!”
The shot of red flame shattered the Bakudo spell as it blasted from Genji’s hands. It ferociously headed towards Kaisho, who knew that escaping damage was impossible at this point. He did not have enough time or speed to dodge this incantation-fuelled spell, and even if he did, he would not get far enough away to avoid serious injury. All he could do now was close his eyes and hope, but his eyes tracked Shakkaho’s trajectory with a wide gaze. An explosion rippled through the Kido training grounds, followed closely by a cloud of dust and debris.
The dirt and dust lingered in the air for quite some time, minutes in fact, and Kaisho was surrounded by it all. Genji looked on, noticing Kaisho’s silhouette as the dirty haze thinned and settled. He had a thankful look upon his face, as it became clear that his apprentice had miraculously escaped the Shakkaho explosion unharmed. However, fifty metres behind Kaisho lay a crater where Shakkaho had struck the ground. Kaisho decided upon using Sho as a means of deflecting the attack from its intended target. Knowing his Kido was not powerful enough to divert Hado of that strength from that skilled of an opponent, the next best thing was to us it at the source of its aim; the hands. In aiming at the hands, Kaisho was able to divert the desired path of the spell, sending it a yard shy of his body.
Kaisho glanced over his right shoulder in disbelief and in awe. “I can still feel the trail of heat from when it passed my right shoulder... It was that powerful.”
Wonderful pride swept over Genji as he saw that his apprentice had done so well at avoiding such a high-level kido, a task not to be taken lightly. Genji clapped his hands.
"Fantastic!" Genji roared joyously. "You have done wonderfully, Kaisho-san! Just super!" Genji bowed. "Be proud, dude. This was a great session. I thank you, for now I see that I can teach someone. Before this, I was nervous about teaching someone kido. I didn't know if I could do it well. It looks like I can do it well, wouldn't you say?"
Kaisho felt overwhelmingly pleased in his efforts today, although relieved that the night had drawn in on soul society. Genji seemed equally pleased in himself for much different reasons, as he explained that Kaisho was his first real shot at teaching. Kaisho was pleased that Genji had more confidence in himself, and congratulated that.
"I think that you can teach very well." Kaisho said with a smile, "Your lesson was very smoothly run, in the way that you moved on from teaching the Kido spell, then to a practice of it, then finally assessing your students general Kido ability with a short sparring session." He added admiringly.
Kaisho knew that one day he would be allowed to teach people in the ways of a Shinigami, and had been making a mental note of Genji's way of teaching as positive, and something he would use as a basis for his own.
"Well, I think I should go, now Genji-san. It is late, and you gave me quite a workout... and a scare!"
The two laughed at Kaisho's latter remark. "I shall see you whenever you wish to teach me. Is there anything you would like me to refine? Sho perhaps, or Geki? Or something different perhaps? Either way, send me a hell butterfly when you're ready. Sayonara!"
With that, Kaisho darted off back to his own barracks with a wave, knowing that without proper Hoho training, he would take a long time getting back to seventh squad.
Kaisho found the retaliation of their energies in response to his own quite amusing, as it was more potent than the one he had released moments ago. He watched as the unit of knights engaged the Shinigami, excited to see that their skill and teamwork were above what he expected. By then Kusari had jumped in on the action, and with a smirk, he watched intently. He could see that Kusari had a method in his madness, as the Fourth Seat tried to rip off the visors the knights wore. However, despite the attacks, Kusari looked to be no nearer to ripping their visors off, and surprised Kaisho with his next move.
After hearing the first line of the incantation, Kaisho's eyes widened. He had no idea that Kusari knew Shakkaho, although he thought back to the mass Kido training he could have been doing with Genji and his other Squad members. Still, the Third Seat was the rank he was for a reason, and though he only knew of the basic arts of Kido, he utillized them well in combat. Kaisho sighed, watching the battles made him feel as though he should join in.
Just then, Kaisho noticed a knight almost ready to slice through Kusari's back. Tightening the lace around his teal cape, Kaisho and with astounding speed and a great deal of reishi gathered underfoot, gathered reishi underfoot and zoomed off to help his comrade. With astounding speed, Kaisho lunged at the knight from the left side of his foe, getting his whole body in front of Kusari's back whilst holding a horse stance. With a reiatsu-filled hand, the Third Seat parried the edge of the blade with the sharp outer edge of his flatly held right hand.
With Kaisho's right hand occupying the centre of his body, and the knight's blade pusshed across to Kaisho's left-hand side, Kaisho turned back and smirked. "And you wonder why I did not want anyone engaging these foes." He laughed, turning back to the knight before he could swing again.
He twisted his right hand, palm facing the knight now, and chanted, "Sho!" before the knight was sent 10 feet away from the action, to be engaged outiside of the circle of mess he dived into. There, Kaisho could give this knight his undivided attention, and with a more offensive lunge, Kaisho drew his Zanpakuto forth with his left hand and downswung his wakizashi in a reverse grip fashion. The knight and the Shinigami clashed swords, and for a time, struggled with one another to gain the upper hand in this deadlock.
The deadlock broke as both Kaisho and the green armoured knight pushed hard. They had managed to force one another back, with what seemed to be equal strength. Kaisho had not engaged a foe properly in Zanjustsu combat before, not since joining Squad 7. Kaisho contemplated reverting back to hand-to-hand combat, but saw this as an opportunity to further his Zanjutsu. Both combatants rushed towards another, their weapons clashing as they darted past one another, instantly turning to engage again. Their swings were quick and precise, Kaisho glad that his wakizashi was smaller than that of his Academy katana, the lighter weight made it easier to him to swing the sword well. Time and again, both he and the Knight clashed weapons in passing, before both attacked head on, this time with Kaisho upswinging his Zanpakuto. Another clash, and another deadlock insued.
"So, what is this lovely little woman doing summoning something from a void?" Kaisho asked casually, finding the chance to speak in this pause in combat. However, his foe did not speak, and instead pushed harder. Satisfied with the silent treatment, Kaisho pushed back, until both separated again. This time however, he had a plan of attack.
"Bakudo #4, Hainawa!" Kaisho chanted, forming an energy rope in his right hand and lassoing it around the knight's weapon hand. The rope stretched quite fair, and Kaisho used this to seize his chance. Gathering reishi underfoot and building up reiatsu in his legs, Kaisho lunged and performed a corkscrew, much like the one he performed to attack Alder in their sparring match recently. He shot forward, corkscrewing until he had moved in close enough. However, the knight brought his weapon through as Kaisho stopped spinning in midair, managing to gash at Kaisho's side before he could even attempt to swing his Zanpakuto down.
Kaisho then edged forward slightly, pulling the knight forward using his still active Hainawa before spinning, almost dancing, a few feet away from the Knight's back. "Hado #4, Byakurai!" Kaisho hollered coldly, shooting a beam of white lightning at the right shoulder of his foe, hoping to incapacitate it. However, the knight used its speed to dodge, and nicked Kaisho's chest as he moved away, Kaisho breaking off Hainawa in the process.
Kaisho took a moment to rethink his strategies, being cut twice was not good, despite the injuries only being minor. They were good, much better than he though they would be. "Well at least now I can see I was right not to engage you, but now I've gone and done it, I guess we should continue..." Kaisho said, holding his Zanpakuto horizontally aloft, before swinging it back behind him and advancing upon his foe again.
As he ran, Kaisho flicked his sword into a standard grip, and began an onslaught of vicious slashes to prevent the knight from impaling him with that odd-looking weapon. A stern, conentrating frown plastered itself upon Kaisho’s face, as he aimed to make each hit count. He could do this for as long as he wanted, his mind slowly becoming more focussed upon the fight at hand, and neglected his body’s onset of fatigue. Kaisho knew that as long as his limbs were still willing to perform tasks he wanted to perform, he would not quit. Kaisho finally found the break he was looking for, and strafed as the knight tried to drive him through his earlier wound.
This time, Kaisho twisted his wakizashi from his left hand into a reverse grip in his right hand. He focussed the reitasu into his free left hand, and with a crack, attacked the Knight’s sternum with a palm thrust. He attack made the armour crack, and definitely injured the knight within it, evident by the way the knight arched over his a hand in his chest. With this as a chance to follow up with a second blow, Kaisho ran and downswung at the knight. However, his reactions were still top notch, and avoided the attack and punched Kaisho in the face.
Kaisho staggered back, and by now he came under fire from the bullets from the weapon in the knight’s hands. Such attacks were difficult to see, and one of them manage to penetrate his left hip. Kaisho winced and gave a short, sharp shriek. His reiatsu flared, and with quick zig-zagging movements, swung his right arm horizontally, slashing at the left arm of his foe and cutting nicely into the armour. As he pulled away, blood splattered from the laceration in the armour, a sign he had met flesh at least.
It seemed as though Kaisho’s opponent was still willing to carry on, despite the injuries the two of them both sustained. Both looked battle scarred indeed, with Kaisho a little worse for wear. However, things were about to get worse. The knight seemed to want to end this quickly, and with a series of quick movements, the knight attacked Kaisho, sending him flying with a sweep of his weapon. However, Kaihso managed to get away from the next attack, and tried to perform Geki. His foe left him no time at all, and forced the Third Seat to block another sweeping blow, only for him to crash through a tree. Kaisho spat out some blood and looked on, wondering how he was supposed to cope with such an opponent. He could match the movements of his foe, but he could not seem to land an attack. It was frustrating.
Kaisho groggily got back onto his feet, wiping the trickle of blood from his chin. He resumed a defensive stance. The knight began to attack again, and with Kaisho’s injuries getting in the way of his ability to fight, it wasn’t long before he was cast aside once more. Kaisho ached, his back and his chest took the brunt of the last few attacks. However, Kaisho refused to give up, and got to his feet once more. Kaisho decided that enough was enough, and sheathed his wakizashi. “Sorry, Zanpakuto, but I think I have to do this with the skills I have used most often.” He whispered.
It was obvious what Kaisho was planning to do, and with his gaze fixed upon the knight, he frowned. “I wonder if I can take such a foe on without my Zanpakuto? I guess I’ll never know unless I try.” Kaisho thought, bringing his hands a little higher and into a leopard palm position. He had briefly read about the style secretly, but only had the chance to use it once, while his sparring session with Alder. He thought he would try it again now.
Kaisho and the knight sprinted forward, wth Kaisho building up reiatsu throughout his entire body. “Bakudo #8, Seki.” He said, forming small round shields around his hands and feet. The knight came into with a downswinging strike, to which Kaisho pushed up against. It seemed as though the knight’s level was still increasing, and as much as Kaisho wanted to fight on par, he did not want to end up killing his adversary. After all, he still had unanswered questions. Kaisho’s reiatsu flared up slightly, though he was still being overpowered, and narrowly missed being crushed under the spear point of the wierd weapon.
The knight followed Kaisho with haste as he moved back, the two of them seemingly on equal footing. Combining Bakudo with Hakuda was a skill Kaisho had begun to refine, and for the most part, the seki shields were holding up well against the attacks. Kaisho saw a chance to score a hit, trying to perform a roundhouse kick with his left foot, attempting to hit the temple lobe. However, the knight brought his weapon up to the hit and blocked it. Kaisho’s shin began to sting, and when he brought it away, he tried a series of leopard punches and kicks of varying heights. With that impressivley sized weapon protecting him, though, Kaisho was just injuring himself even more.
Both combatants resumed their fight, Kaisho had to keep up the attacks he was doing, because now it seemed the knight was going at full strength. The attacks were now starting to shatter the Seki shields, no matter how many times he regenerated them. His body was beginning to bruise, and it became clear that the blood loss he was suffering was taking its toll. Kaisho was barely keeping up with the knight now, but still managed to parry and evade without harm. Desperately, Kaisho went on the offensive, hoping that this would finish the battle, but with his midsection wide open, he suffered a heavy attack. The knight proficiently sidestepped Kaisho’s thrusting attack, slashing Kaisho across his back. Kaisho’s teal cape was ripped completely in half, with a spray of blood staining it as it fell. Then, without giving Kaisho a chance to realise what was going on, the knight moved back to the Third Seat’s body. The knight drove his stomach through with the lance-like weapon, piercing through the other side of Kaisho’s body with a splash of blood.
Kaisho gasped. There was nothing else he could do. He was stuck there, and as the knight slowly and painfully drew it from his body, Kaisho’s shrill bellow of agony ripped through the surrounding area. It sent chills through every spiritually aware being for hundreds of meters around. Kaisho’s body slumped into a kneeling position as he felt limply to the ground; his head hung almost lifelessly resting his bloodied chest. It hurt, so much so that he could not think straight. “Is this how it all ends?” Kaisho’s thoughts whispered, “Is tonight where I meet my end?”
A tear dropped from his face.
“All of the preparation, all the training I had put into becoming a Shinigami, all that sparring with fellow comrades. All of it, for this?” He said, thinking of all the effort he had put into becoming the Shinigami he was today. He then began to see the faces of his comrades vividly in his mind. Genji, Kusari, Sadon, Zaine, Aizakku, Alder and Captain Katsurou... a few of the many names and faces that flicked through his mind like a photo album, turning pages quickly in the wind. The last thing he could remember was that of his wakizashi, the Zanpakuto he yearned to meet for so long. It was at that point he realised that he couldn’t just sit there mulling over his carelessness. It was time to show his true worth.
Just as the knight readied to strike down upon Kaisho, the Third Seat Shinigami’s spiritual energy spiked dramatically. The knight stood shocked for a moment, and as Kaisho opened his eyes with a calm expression, the knight quickly swung down, but not fast enough, as Kaisho caught the weapon with his right hand and slowly rose to his feet. He used Sho, almost shattering the knights wrist, and then unsheathed his wakizashi into a vicious upward slash, cutting through the armour and spilling the knight’s blood everywhere in front of him. The knight staggered back, looking down at the attack, but when he looked up, Kaisho stood with a sorrowful gaze, holding two fingers at his foe.
“Sorry, but I can’t allow you to kill me. I have too many people that need my help, and my Captain probably expects me to return with my all of my comrades in one piece.” Kaisho said, a sad smile curling his lips. “I also have someone important that I have yet to meet.” He added, glancing down at his wakizashi, referring to his Zanpakuto. Kaisho sighed, “I pray this attack doesn’t kill you, because it is not what I intend.”
Kaisho began to gather energy into the form of a Kido spell, and with one last smiled, uttered, “Hado #4, Byakurai...”
A shot of lightning blasted out from Kaisho’s index and middle finger shot at the knight with impressive speed and power. The area surrounding the two of them exploded in a small dome of light, and when everything clear, the knight lay in the crater; almost completely motionless. Kaisho was relieved to see that he had only incapacitated his foe, and lowered his spiritual energy. Sheathing his Zanpakuto, he limped away clutching at his punctured stomach, which was still seeping blood. He managed to retrieve his tattered cape and tied it tightly over the wound, before making his way to Sadon, slumping next to him in great discomfort.
~~ Shikai Achievement; Part One. ~~
With a thud, Kaisho began to lose consciousness. It was unexpected, and the shock of it kept him conscious for long enough to see that it was his Captain, Bullene Katsurou, who had initiated the thud. The pain rippled through his body, and as his eyes closed and his consciousness fell with it, the last thought in his mind was that of an unspoken response. ‘Damn it, that hit was a bit extreme, Captain...’ he though, as everything descended into darkness. The next memory to come to him was that of waking up, the pain still ringing through him as he regained consciousness. However, Kaisho found himself lying in a thick bed of snow and while slowly picking himself up from it, he squinted at the pale surroundings.
The evening threw a cover of white over the landscape under it, bringing thick snow to the whole world. Though only shallow, it spread for miles upon miles, and everything in its wake stood glazed in frost, be it a grand oak tree or a short blade of grass. Now and again, the wind would brush past, bringing with it a spray of kicked up snow across the air. The dusk sky was awash with mist-like silver clouds, which seemed to pass into one another as they passed through the sky. Strangely, the trees were not bare of leave, and they were strong and healthy, suggesting that the soil underneath had almost magical properties. In the twilight horizon, there was a single full moon sitting high, shining in a silver glow, majestic and awe-inspiring to gaze upon.
“Is this a dream?” Kaisho said to himself, gazing around at the breathtaking world around him, noticing two major differences to the place he found himself in, compared to Soul Society. Firstly, it was daylight in Soul Society, while this place was set in late evening. Secondly, a winter like this had not descended upon Soul Society either, and there were no signs of even a hint of wintry weather sweeping across it, let alone in such depth. In order to find answers, Kaisho decided to walk around, brushing himself clean of the snowflakes that littered his shinigami uniform and teal cape.
Kaisho walked along the snow leisurely, taking in the magnificent scene around him. His clog sandals made heavy slatted imprints in the snow, but kept his feet from sinking into the snow. Despite its cold and unforgiving atmosphere, the sight was just beautiful. This was the epitome of winter at its purest, and Kaisho wandered these lands with a feeling of immense pleasure, embracing the cold like it was part of him. He passed a trickling stream, surrounded by a cluster of trees and stopped. The stream was iced over, but there were parts of the stream which had what seemed to be potholes in the icy layer, as if something had broken it.
Where Kaisho had stopped, a lone grey horse stood over the stream, sipping from a pothole it had made, in a lazy fashion. The horse was lean, but its body was encased in extremely strong defined muscle from its neck to its hindquarters. It had a dapple grey look to it, with an icy blue mane and tail. The mane was separated into a set of six bunches, each of which had a small silver ring attached to the end. The tail however, had no ring attached to it. On the horses head, the silver facial marking resembling a crescent moon sits between its eyes. Its eyes were cobalt blue.
“Kaisho...” The horse said in a deep tone, a reiterating ripple of sound filling the air. Kaisho jumped back in shock, “You... You can talk? Just what are you?”
The horse began to walk around the partly frozen stream and edged close to Kaisho with stride upon stride of imposing grace. The ringlets attached to its mane jingled softly as they clapped against the horses neck. For a strange reason, Kaisho felt as though he knew this horse, but he had never seen it before in his life. The two of them were walking now, meeting just two feet away from one another. As Kaisho and the horse stared into each other’s eyes, the answers became clear to him, and he smiled. “You managed to figure out what I am.” The horse spoke again, to which Kaisho replied, “Yes. You are my Zanpakuto spirit.”
Kaisho broke his gaze long enough to look around at the scenery once more, understanding quickly that this place must be his inner world. A feeling of relief and great happiness washed through his body, and Kaisho looked back at his Zanpakuto. “It is a pleasure to meet you.” Kaisho said politely, bowing slightly. “So, what is your name?” He added with a smile. His Zanpakuto snorted, rather disgusted at such a question. “That, Kaisho Fuyuki, is something I cannot tell you on a whim...” The horse said, turning away.
Kaisho felt bewildered by this, since he thought that if he met with his Zanpakuto and asked for its name, that he would immediately find out and be granted access to the powers of his latent entity. However, he soon realised that this was never the case, and that he would have to prove himself in one way or another. “So what must I do?” Kaisho snapped, hoping that his Zanpakuto would stop. “I know I must earn your respect, much in the way of a horseman must earn the trust of his steed before he can ride it.” He added, remembering glimpses of his past life as a human, and that of how he used to own a horse of his own. His Zanpakuto turned, rather surprised that Kaisho had spoken with such wisdom for such a young soul. “It seems you have experienced this before...” he said calmly, yet inquisitively. Kaisho nodded, “It’s a faint memory, but I... used to have a horse of my own. Before I died and came to Soul Society, that is.”
Kaisho’s Zanpakuto spirit stood still for a moment, moving towards him a few steps before stopping again. It seemed as though the spirit was showing a willingness to trust Kaisho, despite wanting Kaisho to prove his worth. The horse looked away, over to the wide white scenery. Curiously, Kaisho looked over, and to his astonishment, saw that at least a thousand blocks of ice. “One of those ice blocks has my name carved upon it. It is your job to find it and pierce it with your sealed sword.” The horse said clearly. Kaisho went to pull his wakizashi in preparation, but it was not there. The spirit flared his nostrils, snorting again in the form of a sigh. “Your sealed sword, after I have finished explaining the task, will be me... Kaisho.” The horse explained.
Kaisho blushed, “Sorry, hehehe, I guess I didn’t think of that.”
For a moment, there was a pause, until everything that had been said was taken on board. “So, what will happen if I pierce it and it is the correct name?” Kaisho asked, raising a brow. The horse answered honestly, “A flash of reiatsu will obscure your vision for a few moments, whether you pierce the right one or not. If it is the correct one, I will be released from the wakiazahi, and we’ll commence the next test.”
“And if it’s the wrong name?” Kaisho asked hesitantly. The Zanpakuto spirit looked into his eyes, a cold stare emanating from their cobalt gaze. “You’ll regain consciousness, without any recollection of seeing me or this inner world, and I won’t let you back here until I think you are worthy.”
All fell eerily silent once more and Kaisho’s eyes grew wide in disarray. It felt like an eternity before either of them breathed, let alone spoke. “I see...” Kaisho mumbled, the only words he could muster.
“Remember one thing before I become your wakizashi...” The spirit told him, “Remember this face.”
Kaisho asked why in his head as he stared, half because he was told to, but half because he understood that it served a purpose. With a blink of his eye, his Zanpakuto spirit sealed itself away and became the wakizashi that Kaisho was all too familiar with. He yanked the blade from the snowy ground, and proceeded to the pasture of ice blocks.
“Remember this face.” He reiterated in his mind as he approached the icy site. The vision he was seemed blurred, probably because he had no fixed place to look to remember a particular feature. Kaisho entered the pasture nervously, the sea of ice blocks filling his wide eyes. The daunting task began to sink in, many names etched upon the blocks and just one chance at making the right decision, Kaisho could be sure that he would have to think long and hard about his choice. He peered at each one, looking closely at the names and thinking of how they relate to his Zanpakuto spirit and this inner world. However, for some unearthly reason, none of them felt right.
Kaisho slammed his fist upon one of them, frustrated at the task. “How in the world am I supposed to be able to to find the right name in all of this.” He roared, sitting down in deep thought. He must have looked at well over one hundred names by now, and nothing about the spirit’s appearence stood out as something he had seen while looking around. In the end, he rose to his feet and had another walk around, remembering the numerous details of the face and body.
Hours had past, and the task was now beginning to wear Kaisho’s morale down. He was sure he had looked at every single ice block within the area, and nothing had remotely resembled any of the featured Kaisho could remember. He noticed that almost every single block had a name on them, but there were a few that did not, which he found odd. Suddenly, Kaisho realised that maybe he had to remember them so that he could somehow manifest those features. It made sense to him, since out of so many he had to choose only one, he would need at least some way of whittling the number of choices down. Kaisho stood back from the pasture of a thousand ice blocks, and closed his eyes. A plan he hoped proved successful set his mind to work, and he began to remember all of the details of his Zanpakuto one by one. He began to say each of them out loud.
“Cobalt eyes.”
“Long Mane and Tail.”
“Six Silver ringlets.”
“Dapple Gray skin.”
“Cresent Moon Facial Marking.”
As Kaisho opened his eyes, all of the important details he rememberd became visible, and the rest of the named ice pillars disappeared completely. Of the details he described, the six ringlets and the facial marking remained, and were either etched or imbedded within the clear chunks of ice. However, there were still no names upon the seven blocks, which worried Kaisho a little. His mind flashed back to the last words said to him, and with a smile he walked over to one of the marked blocks of ice. It was the one with the facial marking upon it, and after staring nervously at it for a long time he sighed.
“I finally think I figured it out.” He remarked, continuing in depth. “I thought, at first, that you wanted me to choose a name. That would just be a silly way of disproving my luck more than proving my worth, which in itself would have proved my own lack of worth, whether the name was correct or not. No, you wanted me to prove myself by proving I had the patience to figure out what to do, and now I figured it out. Now all I have left to do is put my faith in you showing the name to me when I pierce this block.”
Kaisho threw his arm high into the air, coming down on the top of the ice with the tip of his blade and driving through it cleanly. His heart thumped hard as he felt sword sank through it, and doubled in pace as a blue aura burned onto the ice, spelling out the name of his Zanpakuto in Kanji. However, before he could speak his zanpakuto’s name, the whole block of ice, and those around them shatter in a glorious wash of cold, artic blue light energy. The only noise Kaisho could hear was the faint and fleeting sound of jingling metal. What was to be his outcome?
~~ Shikai Achievement; Part Two. ~~
“Where am I now?” Kaisho muttered to himself, the flash of light taking almost an eternity to fade. Eventually, after many a second went by, Kaisho’s vision traced to a silhouette in front of him. It was still, and the shape was still unclear, so he squinted a little harder than before and lurched his head slightly forward. As his vision improved and the light faded completely, he could see that he was still in his inner world, with his Zanpakuto spirit standing strong in front of him. “So, I guess I passed the first test?” Kaisho grinned, his spirit nodding back in reply.
“All right then.” Kaisho said with glee, rubbing his hand together expectantly. He then pulled his wakizashi around to his eyes and looked at it for a moment. “Now if I just call out your name, this will release, correct?” Kaisho asked as he examined his Zanpakuto, which had mysteriously reappeared. He was not very sure on how he knew it had returned to him either, which confused him a little, but only for a moment. His Zanpakuto spirit shook its head, “No, you have yet to know the release command. Without that, you cannot summon me in weapon form.”
Kaisho looked up in surprise from his wakizashi. “What!?” He yelped, a frown creasing his forehead. He suddenly remembered that he that yet to take the next test. But what was the next test? How did it have significance to the release command? Kaisho’s questions were neverending, and grew by the second. He just had to focus on the next task and hopefully succeed, as he had a feeling that the same conditions applied from the first task if he were to fail.
“So let me get this straight... You want me to figure out your release command now? And I assume I only have one shot at making it work?” Kaisho presumed, but his remark met another shake of the head. His zanpkuto spirit stated, “You can have as many tries as you can to guess it, but while you are thinking of it, I shall be fighting you. And if I defeat you before you can correctly guess it, you will return to consciousness with no recollection of any events that have occured.”
Kaisho stared blankly at his zanpakuto spirit for quite some time. In the end, he rolled his eyes with a sarastic remark to follow. “Perfect. Well, I best get my thinking cap on again. In your own time.”
Kaisho regretted his last for words, as his Zanpakuto spirit reared up with a piercing neigh. Its remarkable reiatsu froze Kaisho in place, a shockwave of energy from the horse spirit glazed parts of his body in a thin sheet of ice. It was an uncomfortable sensation, which forced the Shinigami to shake the frost from his clothing and face. The horse then swung its neck back, and sharply swung forward down onto its forelimbs. The action created a huge crescent wave of energy to form from the glowing mane that trailed behind, and with it aimed directly for him at speed, Kaisho had to move away. He did not want to receive a hit from any attacks, or even initiate one of his own. His main aim was to see what his Zanpakuto could do first, then figure out how to counter.
Nimbly he moved away from the attack, which ripped through the snowy grass. It made a fissure roughly six inches wide, a foot deep and stretched for at least thirty or so metres before it lost it dissipated. Kaisho let out a short whistle as he looked at the aftermath, impressed by the force behind it. However, he found himself having to dodge another one, but this time his Zanpakuto spirit was ready. The horse charged, and within no time at all it was right on top of Kaisho, leaving him no time to evade again. With a strong flick of its head, the horse sent Kaisho flying back, winding him in the process. As Kaisho hit the soft snow beneath his falling body, he clutched his chest, grunting in pain as he struggled for breath.
“Kaisho, I have not heard you attempt to release my weapon form yet.” His spirit stated firmly, almost agitated. Kaisho, meanwhile, stood up and stared in silence. ‘What was with the rearing up?’ Kaisho thought, coughing as he took a deep breath. ‘The reiatsu flared up as he did so... that has to be it.’ He deduced, flicking his wakizashi from its reversed grip into the standard weapon grip, whilst still maintaining the blade in his left hand. He rose his wakizashi up vertically, smiling as he did so. “Rear Proudly...” Kaisho said, thinking that this was the command. However, the wakizashi failed to respond, which placed Kaisho in a state of disbelieve. Without a moment to let him gather his composure, his zanpakuto spirit attacked with another wave of ice energy, forcing Kaisho to use insticts alone to dodge.
Fortunately, Kaisho evaded the attack due to his keen reflexes, but did not come away unscathed. A stinging cut on his left forearm opened up, and quickly began to freeze over. “What’s this!?” He winced, clutching at the frozen over wound. The stinging intensified, the pain receptors around the cut overloaded with not only recognising a wound was present, but a massive drop in temperature surrounding it. “Now normally an open wound like this would not bother me in the slightest. The fact that your cold energy wave creates intense cold on any wounds it inflicts, makes even a superficial cut like this one distractingly painful.” Kaisho said, commending the ability of his zanpakuto. “Just spend your thinking on dodging my attacks long enough to figure out my name.” The horse spirit retorted bluntly, flashing another wave of energy at Kaisho before charging forward.
“Dodge long enough to figure out your name?” Kaisho said with a smirk, watching the oncoming attack. “I can do more than dodge.”
Kaisho decided to prove this, placing the index and middle finger on his right hand together and raising it at the energy wave. With reiatsu building up into a spherical point an inch or two away from his fingers, stated the Hado #4, byakurai, as he released the energy within the sphere as one controlled, concentrated bolt. The mixture of energies caused an explosion about halfway between Kaisho and his zanpakuto, and while Kaisho waited, the dapple gray horse charged, but this time at a much heightened pace. Barely able to trace its movements, Kaisho turned and slashed across his body to his right, but by then his zanpakuto had halted its offence and back peddled away from the attack. Kaisho rushed quickly to thrust the wakizashi, but the horse was too fast. He tried to perform Hainawa on his zanpakuto’s legs, but the energy rope could not snare it.
Turning quickly from evasion to attack, the horse charged at Kaisho again, this time with its mane flaring wildly around and reiatsu filling the air in vast amounts. Kaisho responded in kind, pushing his own reiatsu to its fullest and charging in with his wakizashi ready to strike. Both met with a resounding crash, Kaisho managing to cut into something solid. On closer inspection, it seemed to be a chunk of ice that looked like it had come from either his zanpakuto’s mane or tail, he could not tell which from such close range. As they moved away and back into offence again, Kaisho realised that it came from one of the six partings on the mane. He also noticed the sharp point on the end of the icy structure, much like a lance or spear, but seemed to be able to twist and turn as though it was somewhat fluid. The pair stuck at one another again, but this time as they separated, the horse unleashed all of the six tassels on Kaisho at once.
“It’s clear you want a long range battle.” Kaisho stated, trying his best to parry and evade the lance-like glaciers bombarding him. For a few seconds at least, he managed to fend them off and avoid them, but soon they began to inflict scratches, which brought about the added effect of being injured by this zanapkuto’s attacks. “Hado #4, Byakurai!” Kaisho announced, shooting a distracting blow at the horse, who had been stationary. However, the equine zanpakuto moved quickly to a new location and resumed its attacks. By now Kaisho was covered in cuts, and the pain was intensified by the bitter cold freezing over them. He distracted his zanpakuto by firing repeated bolts of white lightning, and now and again tried to move in close to slash, only for his zanpakuto to swiftly move away and fire off its twisting icy spikes again.
As he tried to outrun the spikes, a flashback of how his zanpakuto moved came to mind. During every high speed movement, the distinct sound of three beats could be heard. Now, from a distance he could not properly hear them, due to the snow underfoot muffling. However, up close he could hear them for a moment before they faded, since his zanpakuto could cover a huge gap of space in almost no time at all. He felt that he may have stumbled upon the correct command, but waited for the right time to say it. Suddenly Kaisho gathered reishi under his feet and used it to ascend into the air.
“Disintegrate you black dog of Rondanini, look upon yourself with horror and claw out your own throat. Bakudo #9, Geki!” Kaisho announced whilst ascending, turning as he finished the incantation.
The spell engulfing his Zanpakuto spirit in a red aura, restricting the movements of his onslaught before the horse could drive the piercing frozen spikes through his body. Geki was stonger than before, Kaisho using most of the reiatsu on a Kido spell he used most frequently in sparring and battle. Even he was surprised with how effective it had become, since he had almost completely prevented movement of his Zanpakuto. He did realise, however, that his Zanpakuto could break free if it exerted even a touch more reiatsu. Kaisho had almost reached his limits. Kaisho stared at the horse below, and somehow he knew. The test was over.
It was the eyes. Kaisho could tell, just by how his zanpakuto looked at him, that he already knew that the Shinigami had discovered the command. Kaisho stood amid the twilight sky, and a happy smile curled his lips. “There is no longer a need to carry on, is there, Kaisho? You know my name, and now you know the correct command to release me.” The horse said, its voice echoing throughout the inner world much as it did the first time. Kaisho took his time to answer, savouring the silence and the feeling of achievement. “I do, yet I do not wish to be rude and not ask it.” Kaisho humbly responded. As Geki dispelled, the horse slowly withdrew its attack, waiting expectantly for Kaisho to descend from his spot in the sky.
“Who are you?” Kaisho inquired softly and politely.
His Zanpakuto responded with equal decorum. “I am, Kangetsu.”
With that, the inner world around them began to glow as Kaisho returned to consciousness. He had fulfilled what he had come here for, and as he parted ways with Kangetsu, he already became overwhelmed with the excitement of their next meeting.
