Read The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings... learn where Magic: The Gathering and Elder Scrolls got their foundation ideas... justto name 2... Though, Not all the credit can go to JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis who wrote Narnia, who uses a mixture of Greek and Middle Eastern mythological creatures, and mixes it into a new world, with a Biblical back story.
There is also older stuff, like HP Lovecraft, who made up Cthulhu, and all those Elder Gods, Old Ones, etc...
