I've had a fun past two days. My computer got a pretty vicious rootkit from some trojans. It's fun stuff to remove.
I spent around 2-3 hours forcing my computer to stop running fake antivirus programs and start running my .exe files correctly again; then, another couple hours in safe mode removing as much as I could with antivirus (Malware Bytes) and manually.
So, the trojans are gone, but I still have the rootkit, which is preventing me from searching in google (redirecting from google search results to ad pages) and running a resource-hogging fake ping.exe program, among other things.
Did some rooting around online and removed the rootkit with a mix of Windows Recovery Console and a program called ComboFix.
All said, this was about 8 hours of work over 2 days. All is now right in my computer's .dlls again; huzzah! mrgreen
---------------------------
tldr: I find a perverse joy in removing viruses from my computer. twisted
Note: I don't run antivirus in the background. This is my third virus this year and my most challenging. The others only took an hour each to remove. Removing is more fun than preventing.

Haha I approve. As long as things don't get ugly enough that I start losing data, I am all about eradicating viruses. And fixing any kind of computer weirdness, actually. Its like a test and I always win :I

Oh God, ComboFix, I am well-versed in ComboFix. That is what I have to turn to when s**t on my computer is completely out of control.
I don't know a damn thing about fixing my computer.
I also don't know where I am getting these viruses from! I go to the same 12 sites everyday, and I never, ever check my email! Which of my sites is the traitor?!
