It had been a fairly boring day for Gahiji, since his very dark coat prevented him from hunting while the sun was up, and he had spent the brightest part of the day lounging about under the shade of some rocks. But it was getting cooler as the evening approached, and the black cheetah was getting seriously hungry.
Therefore, his reaction was immediate when he heard the tell-tale sound of hooves, coming closer to the place where he was hiding. In one swift movement he had gathered his paws underneath him and crouched down, ready to pounce.
His ears twitched as they followed the sound of the approaching animal. It was a small one, probably a klipspringer. If he acted fast, at just the right time, he would have enough food to last him a whole day. A feral grin crept onto his face, and he readied himself for the jump. In five... four... three...

Inta smiled as she watched her daughter romp around her, the bright, bubbly voice exclaiming over every new thing they say. Perhaps the little one chattered so much because she couldn't. Secretly Inta believed it was more likely, Imbu just couldn't shut up. Not that she truly minded. Noticing the little one was getting too far ahead, Inta made one of the few sounds she could, a chirping like bark that mothers would use to call their young.
Imbu gave a giggling squeal as she turned to race back to her mother, unaware of how close to danger she was running.

He lunged from his hiding spot, not quite reaching the speed he had wanted because of the rocky, uneven footing, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. The delicious little klipspringer came into his view, and he put everything into one quick, frantic dash.
But something at the edge of his perception disturbed him, and threw him off. He slipped, ever so slightly, and knew he wouldn't make the jump, so he began to slow down, his red eyes darting around the area to discover the source of his distraction, and if it could possibly be dangerous to him.

Oh it was dangerous to him alright. As the young waterbuck screamed in fright and scramble back the way she came, a rather large female cheetah burst from the grass. Dark red eyes locked onto him as she snarled silently, ears flat back against her skull.
Rather than be frightened at being caught between two predators, the young waterbuck bolted -to- the savage female, trying to hide behind her shivering all over.

The black cheetah reacted instantly to the threatening pose of the other cheetah, and swung around to face her straight on, crouching down to be ready to bolt the moment she made an attack. He couldn't afford to be injured, he knew he would starve if he couldn't hunt.
But the behaviour of the waterbuck threw him off. He stopped snarling and did an almost comical double-take. If he didn't know better, he'd say it looked like the aggressive female cheetah was protecting the little creature.
He raised his ears and frowned in confusion. "Uh, sorry," he said to the female. "I didn't know that was your... Prey?"

That earned him another savage snarl as the female curled her tail around the little calf in a clearly protective manor. One inch closer and she would rip his face off.
"Ewwww" the calf bleated huddling against the cheetah's back. "I am -not- food! Momma would never eat me! She loves me you big meanie head!" The buck peered over Inta's shoulder glaring at the dark male. "You're mean and I don't like you! Go away!"
Inta grunted, her shoulders relaxing and uncurling her lip some when he didn't seem to have any further interest in being aggressive towards her charge.
