Prologue

Everyday is the same, we awaken to a faint buzz that somehow goes off inside of our heads. A meal bar on the side of the sink waiting for us to consume. We make our beds, go into the Examination Room, answer the questions from the Voice, go into the Recreation Room... At least, that's what we've been taught to do...

So far everything has been the same we talk and laugh in the recreation room playing with the only set of Playing Cards. The recreation room is pretty simple, a large circular room with about five tables in the middle all with eleven chairs, one for each of us, even us, the twins: 8A and 8B. The only other thing in this room were several treadmills where some people liked to keep in shape.

Everything is always the same...

[[Here is a blueprint of the room in case you need help picturing the room.]]

Chapter I: STARTING

Everyone awakens to the usual buzz that signals another day, or so everyone has been led to believe. As usual the tasteless meal bar sat on the sink in the bathroom as the familiar click from the door to the examination room could be heard, signaling that the door had been unlocked.

The door to the Rec Room was closed and locked, like it always seemed in the beginning of the day.

Nine snapped his eyes open to stare up at the white ceiling. He laid there in silence and waited for the buzzing sound that signaled the start of the day: followed by the click of the lock on the examination door. The noise was something he had gotten so used to that he barely even heard it. Still, he knew what he was supposed to do and when. It's almost like he gained a sixth sense related to time. That's why he learned to wake up a bit early.

The brunette threw off his covers and swung his legs over the side of the bed so his bare feet rested on the floor. Then he stood up and stretched while he made a cute sound effect to go with his stretch. It was something he didn't mind doing since no one was around. Even if someone happened to hear and teased him about it, he'd just act like it didn't bother him even if it did.

Then he made his way to the sink to get the food that was always there. He never liked the taste of it; but it gave him energy so he always ate it all. After he finished, he would get ready for the day and put on the same boring white grab that he always had to wear. Nine had a tendency to whistle while he showered and got dressed. The tune was always the same but he had no idea where he heard it.

After his morning routine was done, Nine made his way to the examination room and waited.

White. Everything would be white.

Counting. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine... Ten opened his eyes as the tenth buzz sounded in his head. Grey. Everything was grey. It always was. Not white. Ten closed his eyes, willing his vision of a white room to return to the back of his eyelids. Nothing. Resigned, he opened his eyes again. It would be another day. Another day of what? 'Nothing. Absolutely nothing.' The thought wriggled into his head, and he knew it was true. If it was a repeat of yesterday, it would be exactly that: nothing. Just as it had the day before that, and the day before that, and for every day he could remember. Which wasn't very far back. Ten had little memories. Perhaps something interesting would happen. But that wasn't likely.

The click of the examination room unlocking sent Ten flying out of the comfort of the bed. If he didn't make an appearance by a certain time in the examination room, he would be penalized. He'd heard rumors about others who'd done that, and the punishment had been severe. Was it true? Ten didn't know. Probably not. But he didn't want to find out. He made his bed quickly, eating his meal bar at the same time, the tasteless food they were given each morning.

He took a quick shower and changed into the clothes he'd wear for the day. He'd set them out the day before, like he always did, so he could just throw them on. He estimated that it hadn't been too long, so he took a little more time getting ready for the day. He stretched for a bit, loosening his muscles. They were stiff. They always were. He hated it. He had to stay fit, just in case something were to happen. Finally ready, he turned his attention to the door to the examination room. Finally, he reached out and opened the door.

White. Everything was white.

"I've got you; don't let go."
"I'm -- trying..."
. . .
"Don't -- let -- go!.. Olivia!!"
"Dad-DY!!...."

Three's eyes shot open to the darkened room; she was early again, thanks to that nightmare. It was always the same; darkness enveloping her as she plummeted through the abyss. A strong voice calling in agony fading in the distance as shrill desperate cry echoed against the rushing air. She could never escape the horror and hopelessness, even after she repeatedly forgot the events of the nightmare each morning, only to wake up in a festering pitch void that made her very thoughts burst like loud sermons in her mind. So normally, when the lights came on and the buzzer sounded, she was usually quick to rise. Today was a little different; for reasons she couldn't explain, the fact that she was already forgetting the disturbing images bubbling in her mind made her unusually troubled. She never heard the name, 'Three' in her dreams, but she could never remember the name that caressed her ears as she experienced the plummet that shook her from her dreams every time. When she heard the buzzer today, she was already standing in the shower letting warm water trail over her body in the dark as she let her mind wander freely.

The sound was more a signal to get out and get dressed, so she grabbed a towel and dried quickly before slipping into the loose, one form fits all white scrubs. She ran her fingers through her hair to pull out any kinks before shaking her head side to side, making mental note to ask for another haircut; it was getting long again. She like her hair when it was long; silky and smooth, and shined healthily, but it was so difficult to maintain in this environment, so like many things, she did what she needed to get by.

She snagged her meal bar from the sink on the way to the exam room, and was munching on it diligently as she waited for 'the voice' to sound and take her vitals and a few of her perceptions; she wasn't feeling particularly chatty about her dreams today, but it'd been her experience that these scientists typically got what they wanted so resigned to being forthcoming to what they might ask her. They already knew she was having nightmares, and they already knew she could never remember any but vague details about them; the repetition of sharing a frustration she hadn't been able to cure in all this time was dis-heartening but she took it all in stride. At least she was still alive.

Click to show. The beginning of a new day always made Five very anxious and excited. She hated waiting and she didn't like laying down until she heard the familiar buzzing sound that officially signaled the start of the day. The young blonde had always been a early riser, and though she could get up and start to dress and whatnot, but she felt quite awkward just being up and about in her room with no where to run to, so she usually forced herself to lay in bed until the buzz was heard.

At last, her sound of freedom was sounded. The bouncy girl quickly shot up from her bed with a little squeal and skipped to the bathroom to begin her shower. As she washed herself, Five began to hum happily. She wasn't really sure why she was so perky today, but everything felt like...just happiness today!

Once dried off and dressed, Five snatched her meal bar quickly and began to nibble on it slowly while she walked to the examination room and opened the door. As she munched, she listened to 'the voice' tell her about her blood pressure and other things she didn't quite understand. Or care much about. Once asked about her night's sleep, the blonde perked up. "Ooh! My dream was..." she paused, trying to remember what she dreamed of, "I think it had something to do with a big white bear! Or maybe...no.."

After a few minutes of thinking, Five shook her head a bit confused. "I don't think I remember.."

For a moment, the voice was silent, which caused the young girl's mind to wander and frolic towards other random thoughts. It was usual for the girl to have little recollection of her dreams. They assumed that since she was in a good mood, that her dream had been a happy one.

Then again, one could never really tell with Five.

She wondered quietly what they were doing, but resisted blurting out a barrage of questions that seemed to have no endpoint. The voice didn't seem to enjoy her ramblings very much. So Five stood there, fidgeting slightly, as she waited for the voice to proceed.

SEVEN groaned as the faint but intrusive buzzing made itself known. Rolling onto his side, he squeezed his eyes shut and then pried them open slowly. God he hated mornings. He ran a hand through his sleep-destroyed hair and stood with a yawn. Wobbling through his morning routine, he tried to remember what he had dreamt about. As the cold splash of water from the sink hit his face, he gave up the effort without much fight, just like he did every morning. It was no use and he knew it; he’d gotten used to not retaining much.

Stuffing the meal bar into his mouth, he held it between his scarlet lips and checked himself over in the the mirror. Presentable, all he needed. Still chewing, he exited his room like he had so many mornings before, and walked out into the examination room, ready to begin another day of nothing.

What lurks behind the white walls...

Shall never be known...

For the sake of the Aliens...

Everyone: The intercom did it's usual question: "How are you feeling today?" It asked, as well as it's other questions soon after: "What is your height and weight?"

When the answers were told, the usual click could be heard in Seven's, Ten's, and Nine's doors, telling them they were aloud to go to the Recreation Room. This was confirmed by the Voice telling them to do so, like it usually did.

In the Recreation Room Seven, Ten, and Nine would see the Eights already in a major argument. While One was on the treadmill competing with Two again. Four and Six's, as well as Five's and Three's doors were still closed.

However, Five's examination room and Three's examination room door's didn't click, instead the Voice asked another question: "Please tell me more about your dream."

Three smirked before shifting slightly in her seat.
"I feel fine." She responded quickly to the first question. "No better or worse than yesterday."
The monotony was in place as usual and she was already prepared with the next answer; countless days of practice had been more than enough to set a routine in place.

"Four foot, seven inches; one-hundred and three pounds... and If you don't mind me saying, my hair is getting out of hand again." She barked almost before the question had finished. Three was almost ready to stand and make for the door, but as she shifted to stand the intercom popped again as another question she'd hoped to avoid rolled across the small room. Three made herself comfortable before releasing a sigh.

"What's to say that you haven't already heard; I'm falling, I don't know where, or for how long. Someone was there trying to save me, but he let go,.. or maybe I slipped; I don't know, and I don't know who it was.... I heard my real name again, and no, I still can't remember what it is." Three paused before scratching the back of her head. "You know, the usual stuff."

Nine stood in the middle of the room and listened to the routine questions that the voice asked him: his hands rested in his pockets. "Just fabulous." He had a tendency to respond to that question in different ways even though they all ,roughly, meant the same thing. The voice might not have liked it; but it was less monotonous that way. "Five four. One hundred n seventeen pounds."

He didn't bother to wait for the click before he started to walk towards the door that led to the rec room. Nine reached the handle and opened it up a moment after the voice finished what it had to tell him. It was the same everyday: there was no reason to stand there and wait if he knew what was about to happen. The preteen stood in front of his door and glanced around the room. One and two were both on the treadmill. Nine didn't mind them both; but the way that One showed off grated his nerves at times: not that he showed that to the others. After all, he would joke about things so much that you couldn't tell if anything actually bothered him or not.

No one else was out of their rooms yet; besides the Eights. Of course they were arguing like they always did in the past. It made him roll his eyes: something he didn't do in the presence of others. He only did it this time because the ones in the rec room were distracted. Nine nonchalantly walked over to the Eights with a small smile on his face. "Boys boys..." he started as he snaked his arms about each of their shoulders, "calm down. I'm sure it's over something ridiculously stupid anyway." He spoke in a way that might have been a bit rude: almost as if he was talking down on them like he was much older. His tone shifted to a more playful type when he continued on to the next part. "How about we have a little fun and play an innocent prank on someone that hasn't come out yet?" He shifted his gaze from one to the other as he flashed them a small smirk. "How 'bout it? Good plan right? So let's pick our victim. I think one of the old farts would be best. What do you guys think?" He paused long enough to give them time to respond while he let his arms fall away from their shoulders and stood up straight.

"We might want to be quick about this," he commented without explaining why. It would be suspicious if they were going over the plan and someone else walked up. Talk about an awkward silence.

The usual questions were asked in the Examination room. "The usual. 5'10. 156 lb," Ten said when the intercom asked how he was, and what his height and weight was. The normal. He didn't go into depth about anything. He felt safer if he kept everything to himself. Less chance of being hurt, he thought. The door clicked open to the Recreation room, and the OK to go by the intercom. He complied, entering the room that served to entertain the eleven individuals. Currently only One, Two, Five, Eight A and Eight B were out. Five and the Eights were huddled in the corner, up to no good, as children were wont to do. He ignored them, going to the treadmills, where One and Two were competing, like they always did. The norm.

Shaking his head, Ten ignored the two as he always did, and set the treadmill on a steady walk, set to get faster each minute, until it reached the speed he set it at. Each day, he'd spend at least half an hour doing this, sometimes up to an hour. He kept his fitness up, not wanting to become so out of shape that doing anything, like possibly escaping, would be too tiring.

Ten had thoughts of escaping sometimes. All he lacked was a reason to. Nothing bad was being done to them. Besides the feeling of confinement, all he was, was bored. He didn't really feel any need to be trying to find a way out at the moment. He was content to stay where he was.

Five answered the usual questions with her normal bubbly attitude. "I feel super-fantastical!" she said with a giggle. "I still weigh like...115.. And I'm still super fun-sized at only 5'1 or something." she spun with a laugh.

At the question about her dreams, Five made a little pout, coupled with a childish whine. "Weeellll, I said I didn't really rememberrrr... But I think.." she paused again, tapping her nose in thought, "I know in the dream there was something white. Like, lots of white.. Oh! There were colors too! I remember that. They just started popping out like..like paint!" she spoke enthusiastically, her arms flinging about and whatnot.

"The colors were soooo pretty.." the young girl swooned a little at the vague memory. "But I don't remember anything else... It was just....colors splashed on whiteness." she blinked a little, not recalling what was white or even why she was there.

After a few moments, Five started to fidget again. She was starting to get impatient, having to wait for the morning assessment to be over with. She wanted to go out to the recreation room and run around. Here, she didn't really feel comfortable running around. Holding her arms behind her back, the blond sighed, "But yeah, that's it.."

"I FEEL like I just woke up. Seven yawned again as he waited for the voice to finish its questioning. He’d done this so many times by now he barely even noticed himself answering. Everything in this life was so repetitive that you didn’t even feel like it was you sitting in that chair day after day; your words droning out a practiced answer. “I’m five foot, seven inches, and weigh one hundred and forty-two pounds. Still.”

As soon as the miniature interrogation was finished, Seven stood and walked the short familiar path to the recreation room. Once inside, he glanced at the other ‘guests’ he had seen every day since he could remember and then immediately proceeded to find a wall and plop down against it. He lazily watched as One,Two, and Ten pranced around on the treadmills. He never understood the fascination with running in the same place for hours, never actually making it anywhere. Though of course he didn’t want to run at all, treadmill or not. He preferred to sit, watch, and hopefully find something of interest to focus on.

What lurks behind the white walls...

Shall never be known...

For the sake of the Aliens...

Three: The Voice spoke once more, "Very well. Please remain seated." It said as, after a minute, the wall slid back, like it did once before when her hair needed cut last time, a man with a long white lab coat, he wore a surgical mask that covered most of his face, as well as a pair of thick glasses that seemed to hide his eyes as he walked over to the young Three, a needle in one hand, and a pair of scissors in the other, a bucket under his armpit.

He walked over to her and put the bucket down behind her. He then put the scissors in it and stood next to her. "Give me your arm." He said with a rather commanding tone. He got the needle ready, testing it by squirting out a bit of the strange yellow liquid. When she offered it he grabbed her arm and injected her with it.

As soon as it activated in her system it wiped her memory clean of any traces of the dream last night. However, the serum knocked her out cold. While she was out, the scientist clipped her hair and as soon as he was leaving the Rec ROom she slowly regained consciousness, sadly with a major headache.

The door to the Rec Room clicked and opened for her.

Five: The voice took a minute to respond before it spoke once more, "Very well. Please head to the Recreation Room." It said as the click could be heard and the door to the Rec Room opened for Five.

Nine: Eight A and B were arguing until Nine came along, and when he offered to pull a prank, Eight B donned his evil smile and nodded happily. However, Eight A, the 'good boy' instantly spoke up at him, "Your going to get the Voice angry!" He said glaring at the older boy.

Ten: One spoke up to the boy, "Yo Ten! Why you so deep in thought for once? Usually your such a space head!" He said laughing at his playful banter. It was always Ten's thing.
