The location she'd chosen was a hidden cellar in the middle of the forest, so their first impression was of darkness, followed up by the earthy smell of of dirt and the chill of a wintery October morning. Carefully, Clarice searched for a thin pull cord and turned on the cellar's single, flickering light.

What confronted Madison was what appeared to be a cross between a rabbit and a typical teenage boy, until it opened it's oversized mouth, revealing a set of pointed teeth, and cursed in Clarice's voice, "Goddamnit. I got p***s'd."

Clarice is now a midsized, male, white Vorpal Rabbit. White fluffy hair, red eyes, white ears, and a mouth that stretches halfway around their head showcasing a mouthful of pointy teeth. "He" is wearing a white shirt, black jeans, and a tasteful blood spatter.

Madison stood very still, trying to get her bearings - using a golem was strange to her, still disorienting. She couldn't for the life of her figure out how she hadn't realized she'd been in one for candidate selection... except that she'd had no idea such a thing was even possible, back then.

When the light clicked on she recoiled. "Augh! Get aw- oh right okay phew." And then she realized she couldn't feel her heartbeat, which should by all rights have been practically jumping up and down, toddler-style, in her chest.

"O-oh... ew." She lifted her hands and saw bones - but not the clean remains of her first trip to Halloween, where she'd been in a massive, 8-foot tall skeleton golem. These bones were set in rotting flesh, tendons flexing underneath peeling skin that was an unappealing green color. "Oh god. Why do I always get the dead ones? Ew, ew, ew," though the ews seemed more resigned than actually concerned and panicking.

Was she male or female? God, she had no idea. This body was pretty damn rotten, but there seemed to be more stuff down there than up here, so... male? Probably? Either that or baby got back in all the wrong places.

"Ew. Okay. I'm okay." She looked around the tiny earthen room. "Now what?"

Quote:
Madison is now a male zombie in a fairly advanced state of decomposition. Average height/build (other than the zombieness making it a bit ragged). Eyes are just pits of blue flame sitting in the sockets; clothing is there but mostly unrecognizable other than being tatters of cloth.

Clarice grimaced, a horrible sight in and of itself, and gave Madison a reassuring pat. Then she wiped her hand on her jeans, "Ew...yeah, sorry. Looks like we got the lemons this time around. Just stay away from fire and uh, try to keep yourself relatively together." She grumbled a bit as she adjusted her pants, "I hate getting guys, some hunters like to try the other side for a bit, but for me? As soon as we get back, I'm gonna take a nice long bubble bath and make sure everything is as it should."

She searched around briefly, and started tapping the walls, when something hollow sounded, she began fussing at the wall, "These spawn points usually have a small cache of tools and items you may need." Eventually she managed to open it up and bulled out a small metal box, "Ok so, if we were going to split up, we'd take these native cellphone-like items. They call them skelephones, we haven't upgraded to eye.phones here yet, and they work pretty similar to our own. Just watch out for the teeth. For today...lets just take them anyways just to be on the safe side. Hopefully there won't be any need to split up. I'm also going to take some silver seeds for us to go shopping with."

"Bubble bath? Oh, man, that sounds like a great idea," Madison sighed wistfully. Every time she looked down at 'her' arms her skin started to crawl. Metaphorically, anyway.

But it wasn't time to focus on her golem. She watched what Clarice was doing carefully, trying to absorb every bit of information. "Skelephone? Wow, they really do love the stupid puns here. I kinda thought they were kidding in class..." She took the thing and, after a moment's fumbling, tucked it gingerly into the one intact pocket she could find on her stupid stupid golem. Fortunately, she remembered seeds from last time.

"Okay, I think I'm ready," she said, then grimaced at the sound of her own voice. "Oh, man, I still sound like a freakin' valley girl. Uh." She tried to rough up her voice a little, pitching it lower and trying to growl a bit more. "Rrrgh. Braiiins....?"

Truly you are a master of disguise, Kouki said, dryly.

"I just try not to talk too often. And avoid names as well, code names are all well and good, but it's easy to forget them. Hey you may not be the most polite way to get eachother's attention but it's a lot better than Hey Clari-I mean-Gargolfluffkin." Yeah, that little outing had gotten a lot of strange looks and palm-to-face action.

"Also," she held up two clawed, slightly furry fingers, "when I do this? A little peace-sign? It means to stand down, chill out, peace be still." The fingers went down and then back up again, When I do it twice? it means peace out. Mission completed or not, you say the magic words, wake up in your pod, call it a day. It's kind of a last resort, as we don't like leaving the golems' core runes laying about. Oh and if you notice something worth investigating? Scratch your nose. There's a few more field signs, but those are the easiest and most generally useful."

Clarice cleared her throat, gave a rumbling little gargle and tried to growl, "Ok, lets get going." She sounded like a demented female muppet, but maybe that was standard for this particular monster. Opening the door revealed a misty, quiet forest. In the distance, the Halloweentown Northside shopping district was bustling with creatures of every size, shape, colour, and species.

"Got it," Madison growled, then grimaced. She was going to end up with a sore throat when all this was done, she just knew it. She followed Clarice up and out, mentally running over the 'field signs' in her head and shifting 'her' rotting fingers about in sync.

Ahh~ Halloween, Kouki said; she couldn't quite tell if the serpent-sword was pleased or not from the guarded tone. Observe everything closely. Someday we will come here alone and make our own way.

Right, she thought back, taking surreptitious glances at everything they passed. Oh god, so many monsters, ghosts, demons, other undead, just about everything she could think of. Even the human-looking ones, some of which looked so normal that they were almost weirdly comforting. A false comfort, though, she reminded herself firmly.

It was smooth sailing as they made their way through the shopping district. Oh sure, there was the occasional bout of Dodge the vat of acid being emptied from that slime thing's cleaning bucket or Try not to look too closely into the writhing mass of tentacles, but overall, a fairly pleasant walk for Halloween. Passing a small paper stand, Clarice paused to double take, and then paid a silver seed for one of the newspapers.

She held it up to Madison, and scratched her nose. "Gotta stay current," she growled. Navigating them away from the foot traffic, Clarice quickly scanned the front page, and smiled widely. It was kind of awful to behold. She wordlessly handed it over to the other hunter and refrained from doing a touchdown dance over the cover story.

It was, a piece of all too delicious irony. While she didn't hate and loathe the Halloween creatures like some hunters, she resented the ******** out of the impact they had on her life, every hunter's life, prior to coming to the Island. To see things no one else can see. To know things no one else will believe. To have things in their life, both small and large, that cut them away from normal human society. It wasn't an enviable existence.

And now, the students of Amityville were getting a little taste of what that felt like. Clarice had been a bit worried about the Boogeymen ebing on high alert for hunters, but now, apparently, they were allies of a sort. Politics, she thought happily, so nice when they work for us.

The vat of acid was duly dodged, though Madison privately thought getting doused in acid might have helped her golem's appearance... even though it probably would have hurt. She needed no encouragement to avoid looking at said tentacles, either; ew, ew, ew, ew.

And she barely managed not to recoil visibly from the way Clarice's golem translated Clarice's grin. Man, if she'd met Clarice in a dark alley not knowing who or what she was... well. She looked at the offered paper, though, and quickly understood why Clarice had smiled.

"Serves 'em right," she muttered under her breath. So Hunters were practically urban legends here, huh? Just like monsters were in their world. "I like this news," she growled at Clarice, tucking the paper away. "I like this news a lot." I'm in your town, when you least expect it, popping up to scare you~ who's the monster now?

Kouki was silent, as he had been since they first emerged. Fine.

"Hey, is that what we're looking for?" she said, pointing at a shop across the street. It looked like there were neat cages in the windows, sporting what she hoped were the pets they sought.

Giving an affirmative grunt, Clarice waited for a passing doombuggy and several brooms to race by before attempting to cross. The shop door gave a friendly groan as the entered, and the huntress walked past the pet cages without a second glance. In the back of the shop were a number of minipet toys, accessories, and even little clothes. Clarice rolled her eyes a bit as one caught her attention. No matter what world you live in, the desire to dress your pet up as a bee is universal.

Dominating the entire area was a floor to ceiling FEAR candy dispenser, "Fill five big bags of candy, I'll go get the rest of the supplies." Clarice smiled in a manner she hoped was reassuring, and went to grab a basket to carry the extra leashes, toys, and grooming products.

A few minutes later, the shop door groaned again, an the cloaked figure of a Boogeyman entered the shop. He stopped by the front counter, and had a quiet conversation with the clerk, whose three heads shook in tandem and then swiveled around to look over the shop. Each of the heads displayed a mild amount of worry, but not outright alarm. After a few moments, he simply shrugged, and gave the Boogeyman a go ahead, gesture.

It didn't take long before the cloaked figure was behind Madison, casually inspecting a display of small gourmet FEAR candies. "Yooou..." A low, husky voice began and then paused, reconsidering, "...are not a student, just yet. Are you?"

"Got it," Madison grunted, taking a moment to peer around the shop with interest. It was so freakin' weird how some things were so similar to how they were in the Human World, just slightly off... and then some things were really off, all of a sudden. Like that thing in the window that looked like a half-rotted pomeranian, except it was still moving.

... Then again, she currently appeared to be a half-rotted human who was still moving. Really, she shouldn't have been surprised.

Madison shambled over to the dispensers and started filling bags, switching flavors now and then to get a nice variety. Who knew what the weird critters like the best? Hearts, gizzards, rotting bones, spiderweb...

And then the voice spoke to her, quite suddenly; she'd been distracted by the candy selection and not noticed the figure's entrance. She glanced over her shoulder and steeled herself to not react beyond that brief jump of startlement. And really, just about anyone anywhere would be startled by some random cloaked dude coming up behind them, right?

Boogeyman, Kouki said, just as suddenly. Like the Halloween... what is the human word? Po-leez?

Police... Right, like they'd read in that article. Okay. "What, Amityville student? Nope. Not gonna go there," Madison grunted, showing her rotting teeth to the Boogeyman. "They fulla crazy there. Gonna let Mama teach me instead. We seen the papers."

Wow, she was kind of glad that her golem was undead so she couldn't feel the pounding of her heart.

A reptilian snout emerged from the cowl, and the Boogeyman gave the zombie a sniff. It snorted, "Good plan. Now, have you seen any Amityville students gathering 'round here? 'Round anywhere, other than the school?"

Turning the corner, Clarice noticed the Boogeyman and Madison, and then slowly pretended to be very interested in a box of Skitter Snacks. The trainee seemed to be doing alright, probably. She slowly edged a bit closer to the conversation, and mentally cheered the other hunter on. But quietly, you never knew what may be capable of listening in.

No, we haven't, we're not from around here, Kouki said, and Madison got the distinct impression of eight serpentine eyes narrowing with pleasure. Work with us~

"Ain't," Madison grunted, following Kouki's lead. "Just came into town today. Supplies for the critters. Live out country-wise. Don't care what crazy people do. If it ain't rotten, I don't care." She punctuated the sentence by dispensing half a bag full of candy, Rotten Guts flavor.

Yes, Kouki preened.

Another snort, "Takes all kinds, but you keep an eye out, and if you see any large groups of students gatherin' you be a good boil and call 666. We can't have them hurtin' good folks like you an' your ma, now can we? Have a good day, and keep yourself outta trouble." The figure turned and began to walk away, and then suddenly the snout turned in Clarice's direction and inhaled deeply. The hunter smiled widely and tilted her head, staring vacantly. Another snort, more derisive than ever, and then the figure was out of the shop, the door groaning mournfully at their departure.

Carefully casual, Clarice made her way back to Madison and growled, "Scary guys in town." She sounded impressed, like this was a compliment of sorts. And she was impressed. Madison had shown a nice bit of calm under pressure, which was definitely a good sign in a Life Hunter. "You ready?"

Sosiqui

"Yup," Madison grunted in answer; then the Boogeyman walked off, taking only a moment to sniff in Clarice's direction before leaving. Instantly, Madison relaxed, then recoiled as she realized her bag of Rotten Guts-flavor fear candy was now overflowing. Ew.

Still, Clarice's response was gratifying, as was Kouki's pride; the weapon was definitely preening now, delighted at having successfully fooled the Boogeyman. We did well. See, it is not so hard to fool them.

Madison wanted to babble at Clarice, but that would be completely crazy given the circumstances, so she just went "Yup," again and shouldered the bags of candy, shuffling up towards the register (or whatever it was) to pay. "Got lotsa Rotten Guts."

Okay, next time she was going to be something articulate. Though maybe this pretense was easier to keep up?

"Guts. Yum." She managed not to grimace at the thought of both feeding minipets that particular candy, and cleaning up their messes afterward. Good job or not, Madison was going to be getting minipet duty for awhile. The three-headed clerk gave them they hairy eye, several of them in fact. Apparently there was some kind of promotion going on that day. Clarice smiled politely, and gruffly thanked the creature as she paid. The door gave a moan of farewell as they left, each weighed down by several large bags full of minipet goodies.

She gave a glance in each direction, looking for both dangerous traffic and to make sure the Boogeyman wasn't still lingering. Eventually she nodded in the direction of the forest, "Home?"
