Today I got the new translation of the Sailor Moon manga. I found it to be very accurate! I only found one mistake. They put "Haruda" instead of "Haru," for Ms. Haruna's nickname. However, the rest is perfect, word-for-word, and I am very impressed by the translator's work. He even included notes in the back, did not change the Japanese sound effects (but rather put what they meant down below them), and used the original Japanese names and honorifics--Mako-chan, Usagi-chan, Senpai, etc. There are some things I would have translated a bit differently, but that just comes down to translator's preference, not accuracy.
I will definitely be buying more, and throwing out or selling my old manga with the inaccurate translation!

Although, there's an inconsistency in phrases, and Minako had a n**-slip in the Sailor V manga. I'm pretty sure that makes her a loli?

An inconsistency? How so? Please give an example.

Oh, yes, that. That's the only one I noticed. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, though. *Shrug* Maybe they were trying to figure out which one was better and they forgot to finalize which one they wanted to use? Perhaps they will fix that in later manga chapters. The thing with translation is, words have synonyms, and while one person would use one word, a different person would use another. For example, I noticed they used 'dummy' for 'baka,' while I might have used the stronger 'idiot.' There was something else, but I can't remember what it was. I did notice some slight inaccuracy, come to think of it. While they had Tuxedo Mask say, "I'll take note of you," the Japanese says something more like, "I'll remember you." Or using " the blood of the Moon's Royalty" instead of "the blood of the Moon Kingdom." Also, "Someone calls me in my dreams," says the original Japanese, while the translation says, "from my dreams." But I don't think that they really hurt the overall translation; they were only slight mistakes. Compared to the first translation, this is wonderful. The rest of it was accurate in my opinion, though, and I think overall, the translator did a good job. Some of it was word-by-word accurate, which impressed me.

I was still debating on picking up books up but I have now put them on my Christmas list. I remember the first ones and was a little wary of how they would be handled this time around. It is good that there are only slight issues instead of glaring ones. I can live with different phrases, it isn't that big of a deal for me.
Should I read the Sailor V first, or does it really not make a difference in the long run?

Not much of a difference if you don't read V first but..it's better if you because it's like "OMG! V came out!" depends if you become fond of V or not.

Some of the Sailor V chapters were made after Sailor Moon came out, so I don't think it makes much of a difference. You can read them together.

I am the Titan Senshi of Stars and Destiny! Protector of the innocent! And invincible! SAILOR CRONUS!! Every time I've read a translation, the note said "Haruda" because it had a certain pun meaning. >.>;

It might help if my pre-orders weren't late/delayed.

I just got the Sailor V and I have to say I"m quite pleased. I still remember getting my Sailor Moon Manga in the form of flipped comics with really awkward wording. I hope the re-master the anime like they did in Italy as well.

I was at first opposed to "Senshi" being translated as "Guardian," but then I realized that on the cover of the Japanese manga, It says "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" in English above the Japanese "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon," so I think that it is possibly how Takeuchi-sama herself wanted it to be translated, or at least the people who put out the original manga.

I'm always surprised that when they do the English translations, they don't flip the pages for easier reading for western readers. It's not like this was a rush job and they didn't have time... its been over a decade xD.

I, for one, am thoroughly impressed with the manga. I got mine yesterday. . . and Sailor Moon V2 and Sailor V V2 are due out in November. I look forward to them. Currently reading Sailor V. It'll give me the insight I need.

Oh good, I was hoping the new translations would turn out nicely. I've already informed my husband I want a few for my birthday in a few months... Of course, he thinks I'm nuts, but whatever. xp I'm pretty sure I am.
And Shiva, the reason why a lot of publishers won't flip the manga is because it often changes parts of the story. The scar that was on a character's left cheek is suddenly on his right. A warrior who is right handed now holds his sword in his left hand. A girl with "WAVE BODY" written on her shirt suddenly has it changed to "EVAW YDOB." That kind of thing. It also sometimes distorts the artwork (check out some of the first edition Ranma 1/2 translations and you'll see what I mean), though fortunately technology is at a point where such distortions are rare anymore. I think there's also a lot of demand from fans to keep them in their original, unflipped formats.
