So, I'm new to this whole guild captain thing, but i've helped run a few guilds in the past, a few threads as well, including my own and i think i do fairly well at it. But here's the problem.

I have a member who has been with me since day one. They were there when i started the thread my guild has grown from and it has been a rather bumpy ride. I know every member is entitled to their opinion and ideas regarding the plot, but whenever i try to change things for the better they seem to think i am attacking them and that the changes affect only them.

Example: Many of my members asked to have a limit put on how many characters each player can have. The original number asked for was 5, but i knew that this individual already had more then 5 characters so (with much grumbling in the background) I changed the number to 7 (one more then the individual had) but ended up spending hours getting told how i am unfair and always do things to make it impossible for them to enjoy the roleplay. This turned into an all out war between the two of us, along with others arguing that i need to stop giving in.

Now, i maintain that in this instance I only did as i did to avoid an argument (which didn't happen) as this was not the first and i fear it will not be the last. I have warned that the next person to act in this manner towards me would be banned but i fear it will be ignored. I really would rather not ban this person as they hold MANY main plot characters, but i can no longer stand for this attitude.
So,....Advice. PLEASE!!!

Wow, okay. Well, first of all, your the captain. No one else. You have to be fair with what you decide to do, but you have to also keep in mind that your reasons are yours, and that regardless of what other people say, its you who has to run the guild. Do what will make you happy.

But if you really think the limit should be 5, then ask the person to delete two characters if they can, otherwise just tell people that you are making it 7 so that no one, make it general and not specified, has to delete any characters.

Gosh I hope any of this makes sense, my brain is dead today.

Before you can lead people, they have to like you and be willing to follow. HOWEVER, you cannot maintain control if they know you're a pushover. If you set the limit at 5 RPCs, then have that be the rule, end of discussion. If they don't like it, they can leave. Try to make them WANT to stay. Make your guild entertaining. If you're job to make rules, organize, and be the boss. Like a parent. You have to be able to lead, make decisions, AND STICK WITH THEM.

Guild Captains have the authority to do as they please, but they also have the responsibility to do what is best for their Guild. Bending the rules for a single person shows favoritism, which is not a good trait of a Guild Captain. When you make a decision you need to stick with it, unless your Guild Members present you with a sound, logical reason for it to be changed. On issues that you can't decide open a Discussion Forum on the topic and resolve the problem and satisfy everyone.

Only when given a solid argument for change should you change, because otherwise you appear to be a pushover and people want a strong leader. People being rash over your decision shows immaturity, but you need to be mature and handle the situation properly. No matter what remember you are the Guild Captain and as such it is your duty to make sure the Guild prospers. Losing one member is far better than losing nearly every other member.

Hmm in my opinion, it's better to lead with happiness rather than the iron fist. When you make decisions, think about you, your guild and your people. Make a way so that everyone is happy, no choosing favoritism. If everyone has 6 characters, go ahead and make the limit 7 but if only one does and you think it'd be better for the guild and other members, make it 5. Negotiate with whoever this guy is. If he keeps acting this way, don't be afriad to be a jerk and tell him he's bein an arse and he needs to respect you more. If he can't get that in his noggin, kick him out. Hopefully whoever he is, is a person who can comprimise.

If someone has a problem, talk about it with them, negotiate it so that things go your way and things go their way at the same time. If you make your people unhappy, they'll probably leave.

Hope the advice helps. :3

Umm...thanks for all the help everyone, i really appreciate it :3

I always try to be reasonable and compromise for my members when changing things in the guild. Almost every change i've made has been posted for discussion. (I've even added a thread for people to vote on new topics and ideas)
But it just seems that no matter what i do there is always someone mad in the end and i'm worn out from dealing with all the s**t. It makes it hard for me to want to even post in my own guild...

In every group of people there is at least one person who refuses to be happy with what they get, even if they get exactly what they want. Best thing to do is ignore them, otherwise they will drive you insane. Trying to please them is impossible, they will always find something to complain about. If it gets to a point where it is beyond annoying the easiest thing to do is just kick them out, but it would be better to confront them first before booting them. Hope this helps.

7? Wow. Any time I ran a game, I tried to keep it to 2 main, and 3 NPCs. Too many moving parts for me to deal with. lol
There are some people that just aren't going to be happy. But here's a compromise that I found works in the past - if they can keep up, they should utilize some of those characters somewhere else - as NPCs perhaps? Permanent. That they run, in a separate section. Like towns people, or shop owners. They still have to be under you, as the game master or guild owner.
But, yeah. You're the boss. Set some rules, and if they can't deal with it, they know where the door is.
Note: I wouldn't propose this until they could calm down and get over themselves. You might ask them what the problem is first, why they feel so singled out. If nothing's resolved after that, there's not much to be done but to give them an ultimatum. Or just know that they're going to be that way, if you have the patience for it.
Good luck, and God bless.

I know this is an old thread, but I am interested in how it played out. I just had a member who walked away over a difference, and after a week of trying to work it out, their solution was still to walk away. I like the idea of talking with someone, but it often helps to have someone who knows both of you present. In my case, the person was not open to that. And it seems they had far more on their plate than I knew. It was time to leave, but they seemed unable to say so.

While it was a different situation, I am still setting up guidelines and would like to prevent as many problems as I can by making things clear early on. I learned from this to set a time limit and specific goals. In this case, it went on too long, exhausted both parties, and solved nothing. I learned more about the causes, but the price is once I do not want to pay again. And I am getting more done now that I am not explaining and re-explaining each decision.

I also like the creative choice of offering to make the extra characters into NPC's.

I'm happy to say that after a LONG talk with the disgruntled member we managed to work things out by creating a new forum where the characters they were worried about loosing would be able to continue on in their story.
Sometimes you have to make space for others and though they were upset that their characters had to be removed from the main thread/forum, they were happy to be able to continue the story they had started. So, in the end everything worked out smile
Though sadly due to personal reasons I was forced to give up Gaia and shut down my guild for some time, but hopefully we'll be up and running again wink

You're very welcome wink
Also, after some more discussion the guild members and I decided to change it from a simple character max. of 7 to a main character max of 5 and 2 permanent NPC's or 'Temps' as we dubbed them.
I hope all of this will help in some way with your current situation.
