Ragnhild hurried to her sister's den. Not so much because she had any urgent business, but because it had been too long since she last saw her sister. Dalla had been busy with her crafting, and Ragnhild had had some very deep soul-searching to do... due to recent events that she's rather leave aside for the moment.

But since things had been going so well with Uthred, and her chosen path had been properly reconfirmed in her mind, Ragnhild had definitely felt it was high time to pay her dear sister a visit. It felt like they hadn't talked in AGES.

Hopefully, Dalla would have the time to see her, too. Ragnhild came to a halt in front of her sister's den, and habitually did a quick grooming before gently padding up to the den's opening.

"Dalla~?" She called softly, but brightly. "Are you in today?"

Dalla had been spending the past few hours in her den smoothing stones therein. A large half-shell was filled with sand, and Dalla used this sand to buff out imperfections in the stones she collected. Oftentimes the stones would go into the sand and after hours of repetitive movements of Dalla's paw the stones would come out of the sand gleaming and smooth. She could then use these stones as beads or pendants.

Dalla loved her craft.

Her ears perked at the sound of her sweet sister's voice, and she glanced down at her sand-covered paws with dismay. No doubt her sister was perfectly groomed and prettily arranged waiting outside her den for Dalla to answer. With a heavy sigh, Dalla shook the grains of sand from her paws as best she could and made her way towards the mouth of her den to greet her sister.

"Ragnhild," she called out in greeting, a pleased expression on her face. Despite their differences and the hardships they'd endured, it could never be said that Dalla did not love her sister. "I have not seen you in quite a time." She glossed over the reasons why she had not seen her sister, instead focusing on how beautiful Ragnhild looked.

"You are glowing. How are you, sweet sister?"

Ragnhild couldn't help but take a few dance-like steps out of sheer excitement at seeing her sister appear at the den's mouth, and the compliment helped to improve her good mood a little further, even if she felt it to be a little exaggerated and made her ears grow suddenly warmer. Surely she wasn't glowing. A young lioness in the first throes of passionate love could glow, a mature lioness with life growing inside her could glow, but Ragnhild was neither.

At least not right now. Mated for the second time it was more than likely that motherhood may soon come into the picture, after all, not to mention that it was her duty to her husband.

Ragnhild knew what the talk was about her and Dalla - since cubhood, she had been told that she was 'the pretty one,' but she herself had never been abe to see it. She found herself lacking in almost every way compared to her sister: Dalla was smart, strong, good with her paws and always unafraid. Ragnhild was small, looked even more frail than she actually was, and only really had a decent singing voice and a penchant for weaving rhymes when it came to anything like marketable skills. No wonder she was always treated as more of a pretty little trinket than a strong freeborn lioness.

She pushed such complicated musings back into the far back of her head and sent her sister a brilliant smile, stepping up to touch her forehead to Dalla's in a warm and sisterly greeting.

"I'm well, thank you, doing a lot better than the last time you saw me..." Her eyes got a slightly distracted look for a moment, but she shook it off and continued brightly: "You look lovely as always, Dalla! Oh, it's been too long since we just sat and talked to each other. Are you very busy today?"

She didn't want to interrupt her sister's work, after all. Though she would more then gladly take a look at it. Ragnhild could never get enough of looking at Dalla's beautiful trinkets and marvel at her sister's skill, even if it always did make her feel a little jealous.

Dalla could not help but giggle -- giggle!! -- at her sisters show of utter happiness. It was so strange to think that this beaming, gorgeous female was the same one that had helped to kill the husband she was duty-bound to honor. That single thought caused Dalla to falter, though she swiftly regrouped when Ragnhild leaned forward so that their foreheads could touch.

Ragnhild had always been more animated than her sister. Dalla often felt dull next to Ragnhild's more elegant form, but after the happenstance meeting with Uhtred on the beach... after seeing the interest in his gaze and hearing the way that his voice had deepened, well... for once Dalla felt like the prettier sister. These were errant thoughts, though, and for now Dalla forced herself to shake them off. Now was not the time for ruminating on such thoughts.

Now was the time to focus on her beautiful, sweet, beloved sister.

"You are always welcome here, sister," Dalla said softly, muzzle drawn up in a giddy little smile. "As you have said, it has been far too long since we have been able to sit about and just talk as sisters do. I would put aside anything for you, Ragnhild," she said, drawing her sister back into her den for privacy.

"I made a pendant for your ..husband," Dalla commented mildly, stumbling over the word husband, "perhaps you can deliver it to him when you return home. I told him of it when we met on the beach recently -- a gift, I said, on behalf of the both of us." Dalla wasn't quite sure why she'd brought up the topic of Uhtred. Perhaps she wanted to hear how he was getting along with her sweet Ragnhild, or perhaps it was to remind herself that Uhtred was married to her beloved sister. Either way, Dalla felt a bit foolish for bringing it up.

Ragnhild protested weakly as her sister insisted she would put any work aside for her sake, and pulled her into the den, but she followed along more than willingly, peering around at all the lovely knicknacks and pretty things that she could lay her eyes on.

Her excitement faltered for just an instant when Dalla brought up the subject of her husband, and all the complicated musings flooded back into her mind again, but she quickly recaptured her smile and gave Dalla a happy nod.

"How thoughtful of you. I'm sure he will love it." She tilted her head curiously as she sat down and made herself comfortable, habitually wrapping her tail elegantly around her paws. "You met with Uthred? How did it go? How was he? What did you talk about?"

Ragnhild did feel that she was a little too nosy, but her intentions were pure. She really did want to hear her sister's input on the lion she had been made to marry, knowing only too well how bad she herself was at judging a male's character.

She cleared her throat and clarified at a slightly slower pace: "Was he nice to you? I... don't really know just what to think of him just yet. We've only talked - really talked - just once so far. I don't feel I know him yet."

Dalla moved towards her sand-filled shell, removing the stones she'd left therein before her sister had arrived. Brushing off each stone with gentle movements of her paw, Dalla did not look at Ragnhild while her sister spoke, nor did she look at Ragnhild when she replied.

"He is.. he is a strong lion, Ragnhild." Studiously she set aside one clean stone before turning her attention to another. "He is a fine male, and I sense a gentle kindness within in." Something I never sensed with Gunne, Dalla thought to herself before erasing the bold thought from her mind. Not now, not now. There would be time for the blunt conversations later.

Dalla did not mention the warm way that Uhtred's gaze had lingered on her body, nor did she mention the way her own body had responded. That would be Dalla's own little secret, one that she would cherish forever. That would be the first time in her life that she had felt like the desirable, elegant lioness that her sister was and that Dalla could never be.

"You must be good to him," Dalla said, meeting her sisters gaze for the first time since they'd entered Dalla's den. "Promise me this. You must never forsake him, Ragnhild. He is an honest lion, the finest Stormborn, and you must promise me that you will take care of him like a good wife would, honor him like a good wife should."

She looked slightly mortified at her sudden outburst. Would her sister suspect anything? Dalla doubted it -- and even if she did, Dalla could not bring herself to care.

Ragnhild was a little taken aback by her sister's rather passionate admonishments. It wasn't very much like Dalla to speak of a man that way. But, on the other hand... Ragnhild's gaze sank to the ground and her ears lowered as her smile faded away. She could guess what would cause such an outburst from her sister.

Waves of cold shame that bordered on nausea swept through her body at the thought of what she had done to her former mate. Few stormborn actually knew of Ragnhild's active involvement in Aesir's rise to power, but Dalla was one of them. Even though she knew that her sister had always had a great deal of respect for the former warlord, Ragnhild hadn't been able to keep the truth of her horrid actions from Dalla once the full implications had really hit home for her.

It was a little saddening, but not really surprising, to think that her darling sister would worry for the life of Uthred who - at least in Ragnhild's eyes - had so much in common with Gunne.

"I... I intend to," She stammered quietly, unable to look up at Dalla. "I... want to think that I have learned from my mistakes." She couldn't help it: Her voice grew thicker as the shame and the self-loathing and the anger rose into her throat and threatened to strangle her, and she had to fight to keep it down. "I have decided... that I will... that I must be a good wife, this time. That I won't be misled by... pretty words and empty promises." She more or less spit the last words, but then pulled in a deep if somewhat shaky breath and managed to compose herself again.

Straightening up again she finally managed to look her sister in the eye. "I promise you," she said with a look that was both serious and pained, "That I will do my utmost to be everything that he wants, anything he needs. I know I can't make amends for what I've... what I've done. But... I mean to change."

She hadn't meant to get so emotional. Ragnhild looked away and cleared her throat, trying to blink the sting out of her eyes. This was not why she had come to see Dalla, and she would not cry on her sister's shoulder. Not now. Not again. No way.

She forced a smile onto her face. "I will be good to him. I promise."

"My sweetest Ragnhild," Dalla began, moving towards her beautiful, beloved sister, "you were not the one to blame for Gunne's fall. You were a pawn in a greater scheme," she paused, those bright eyes of hers flashing with icy fire. They had not spoken of the death of Gunne since shortly after it had happened, and even then the discussion had been brief and disjointed. Dalla could find no fault in Ragnhild -- after all, her sister wanted nothing more than to be loved and respected, much as most any female did. It was no fault of Ragnhild's that Aesir had capitalized on her precious sweet sister's weakness for pretty words.

"Aesir is to blame," her voice dropped until it was a whisper in the dim den, "Aesir and Morrigan used you as the weapon to bring Gunne to his demise, and you mustn't blame yourself for it. It... it is hard, I know, and I believe that you will do better this time. Uhtred is just as great a lion as Gunne was, perhaps ... perhaps even a better lion," Dalla dropped her gaze. She couldn't help but feel that perhaps she'd gone too far, but she charged on. Such was the way of Dalla.

"A time will come that your honor will be restored, my sweetest and most beloved sister," Dalla said vaguely. She turned her gaze up now, searching for the bright eyes of her sister that were much like her own. "A change is coming. I do not know when, my precious sister," she paused and her voice dropped once more, "and I do not know how, but I will not stand idly by as my sister is treated so foully. We are only lucky that you were given to one so strong and honorable as Uhtred."

It was obvious by her tone that she would not divulge more on the subject, but she fell silent, her attention moving back to the stone that she'd left in the sand.

Ragnhild sat quietly and listened to her sister's words, how they teased and gave life to the dark thing that curled in her stomach. It both frightened and enticed her, this black, cold rage, born as it was from her own sense of powerlessness. Hearing Dalla echo the words that she most needed to hear gave this thing wings, and for a moment it threatened to swell out and engulf her completely - it was a good thing Dalla was not right then watching her sister's eyes, she might not have recognized her - but it couldn't last, of course, and Ragnhild lowered her own gaze for a moment, only looking up again when Dalla spoke of change.

She did notice that Dalla spoke much more warmly of Uthred than she usualy did of anyone that wasn't directly related to the two of them, but she told herself that it was still just her sister trying to be encouraging.

When Dalla returned her work, Ragnhild sat quietly for a moment, studying the floor at her feet, before quietly mumbling:

"But I did it. I can't forget that. I can't pretend that I didn't know what I was doing. I may have been a pawn - I was a pawn - but I wasn't innocent. If I let myself forget that, if I try to excuse myself, then how could I prevent it from ever happening again. If I hadn't let Aesir get to me... If I had been stronger... smarter... I wouldn't have had to live with this... guilt." She looked up and narrowed her eyes, speaking as if only to herself, though Dalla could surely hear her. "But this guilt is mine. I will carry it with me to the end of my days. On the other paw, the scheme was his. The plot was Aesir's, and yes, one day, he too must suffer for his actions."

In that moment, the dark thing came over her again, and Ragnhild straightened up, her voice still low and calm, as she gazed at her sister with a subtle smile on her face. "If the change doesn't come on it's own, most dearest sister, I may well force it myself." Then she sank back into herself and her smile brightened. "Oh, but I do go on and on, don't I? You must grow tired with me like this. I'm so glad you feel so warmly about Uthred. If you like him so much, then he must be worthy.... and if he is a better lion than Gunne, well, what is ever to truly stop him from rising in the ranks, as well? The stormborn could surely use a warleader with such notable distinction."

"You are so strong, my sweetest Ragnhild," Dalla said softly as she lifted her gaze from the stone in the sand-filled shell. She ran her pale eyes over her sister's perfectly arranged form, hesitant to continue with conversation of Aesir lest someone overhear their threatening words. Such slander would do far more harm than good and Dalla did not want to see her tentative plans stalled before they even had a chance to grow to fruition.

"Nonsense, beloved. I assure you I could never grow tired of you. You are like a breath of fresh air among swine." Offering Ragnhild a grin, Dalla moved away from the shell she'd been working with. "Let me show you the pendant I have made for Uhtred. I am sure you will appreciate it. I have not yet found a suitable chain or somesuch to hang it from.. perhaps you can help with that?" Maybe if she included her sister in the crafting of the necklace it would not look so suspicious, even if she doubted that Ragnhild knew of her desire for Uhtred.

She presented the pendant to her sister, the carved bone resting against her pawpads. Upon it she'd carved a large shield much like the marking that Uhtred's flank boasted. Within the shield she carved the symbol of their pride -- the three interlocking triangles, though the triangles were formed by snakes that had swallowed their own tails. It was one of her finer pieces.

"Do you think he will like it?"

Ragnhild happily got to her feet and moved closer to her sister, feeling a bit relieved at leaving the subject of Aesir aside for the time being. It was complicated and - she knew - treacherous, but moreover it changed her. Talking about it, even thinking about it, changed her. Maybe it was a good and necessary change, but she would really have preferred it if life had been a lot more simple. So that she wouldn't have to change at all.

Strong? she though to herself. Not at all. Not yet.

But she grinned back at her sister. "Oh, if there's anything I can do, I'd be more than happy to." She liked fiddling with the pretty things her sister made. It almost made her feel creative herself.

But what Dalla had made this time really took Ragnhild's breath away. The bone was carved in exquisite detail, every scratch serving to accentuate the pattern. For a moment, all she could do was stare in awe. She had to hand it to her sister: If ever there had been a piece of jewellery that screamed "Uthred," this was it.

"It... It's perfect." Ragnhild gently put her paw up to touch her pad against the bone, almost as if to check if it was for real. "Dalla, that's... that's amazing. You are so talented!" A ghost of jealousy passed through he, but it was an old and familiar feeling, and easy to ignore. She looked up at Dalla with excitement sparkling in her eyes. "Wouldn't it look gorgeous on a silver chain? Or an naturally brown leather strap. Silver would look so good on Uthred, but brown leather really brings out the natural hues of the bone, I think?"

She sought for approval in her sister's eyes. After all, Dalla was the crafter, the one with the real talent.

Dalla grinned brightly at the praise from her sister. Though everyone in the pride found Dalla's pieces irresistible and were quick to compliment her work, hearing the praise from the mouth of her dearest sister meant more to Dalla than any other compliment could.

It was so complicated, so beautifully twisted, the relationship that Dalla had with her sister.

"Mmm, I'm glad you like it, sister. I worked through the night on this piece. I want to show Uhtred my thanks for being so good to my most precious sister." She leaned forward to bump her nose against Ragnhild's cheek in a childish gesture of affection before pulling back, mulling over Ragnhild's suggestions.

"I like the thought of a brown leather strap. Sturdier than silver and much easier to find. While I think the silver would look stunning against Uhtred's fur, I think it might be a bit too flashy for him." Humming softly, Dalla left the pendant at her sister's feet before moving to dig through a medium-sized wooden crate that she'd found washed up on shore. She chose a fairly thick leather strap before returning to her sister.

"I think this will do nicely."
