Okay, so the thing is, my mom...just doesn't care for the environment. Don't get me wrong, she doesn't hate it or purposely litter or anything like that...she just doesn't particularly care. It's not entirely her fault - she was brought up poor and though well educated, focused only on getting good grades and thus a good job. So I've tried talking to her about it...And she knows it means a lot to me. But I guess she's just tired of hearing me rant off about it now...So she either drones me out or kinda...in a way, mocks me whenever I try to talk to her about it. She just laughs it off. So now I'm scared to keep trying to tell her to at least turn off her lights when she'll leave her room empty...And I've been scared of her in the first place anyways too. (Heh....my mommy ish scary...>_<) Moreover, my earth science teacher was talking to us about how we shouldn't go bug our parents about being more environmentally conscious...He was saying stuff like, "Don't go bug your parents about it and tell them to do this and this and this to save the environment, you do that. You do something about it. Your parents have already heard enough about the overwhelmingly lethal state the Earth is in now." But the thing is, I do do stuff to save the environment. Every day I do. And my mom doesn't know about the state of the Earth. She never reads up on it, watches it on TV...etc.

So...what do I do to convince her to care about the Earth more?

I come into contact with a lot of people like that, and it's really hard to convince them to care. Apathy towards social injustice, the enviroment, and animal protection is something I absolutly can't stand- but there isn't a way to convince people. Just be a good example, I guess. People will realize eventually.

Not everyone can be an activist, and not everyone is going to care, sadly enough. I've run into that a lot at my school, with people who know about the problems with the environment, with social injustice, and just... don't care. They're more concerned with when the next time they're going to get smashed will be than with saving the earth.
But that's another story and another rant.

What I have found to be effective when trying to convince someone who doesn't particularly care about the environment to be more environmentally friendly, is to relate it to something that they do care about. Turn off the lights when you leave the room to reduce electricity bills. Take shorter showers to reduce water bills. Use reusable dishes and you won't have to take the garbage out as often.

As sad as it is, people in general tend to be more motivated by money than by good causes.

Just promote it, if she forgets to shut off the lights, do it instead, if she has a problem with you doing that, well then tell her to suck it up because if she won't do it, you will. Like Aria said, not everyone can be an activist, but that doesn't mean it should stop you. But if your mom litters or does something that can really harm the environment, tell her and remind her whenever she does, but don't push your beliefs on her, okay?

I think your science teacher is right. Nowadays, I think it's simply best to lead by example. Being older I think it's definitely harder to change your beliefs. The world needs compassion and support more than it needs everyone to change anyway.

I say, do the best you can about YOUR world, for that's the best that anyone can do. Make it easy on yourself, and the world.

We should start our own counterculture, maybe a remix of the hippie philosophy, and give environmentalism central importance. Then, when people wanna be cool like us, they'll become environmentalists.

I can't believe I just combined selling out and saving the world into one scheme. I feel ill. neutral

Wow, thanks guys. I'll do my best to keeping as an activist myself and reminding my mom when she does something particularly harmful. heart

Well, if we, as a movement, had charisma, we could do anything.

There are people who don't care, they are blind, and they only open their eyes when they get affected, that is the humanity mind falling to a future that is going to destroy all of us.

There should be more music groups like System of a Down, they sang about the enviroment and politic, and also they say:

We don't have to cut forests to make paper anymore. That's why System Of A Down printed this CD booklet(printed with soy inks)on Vanguard Recycled Plus processc chlorine-free paper, made from 10% tree free fibers and flax and 90% post-consumer waste from www.livingtreepaper.com

System of a Down rocks like that. =)

Ugh, my mom always leaves the lights on too. So do my brothers. It could be broad daylight, the window wide open, the room completely filled with light... but if my brother has a sandwich and is sitting in the living room.. he turns on the light next to him. o_o It doesn't help at all, but even if I turn it off he turns it back on.

Same with my mother in the kitchen. We even have a skylight and its a very well-lit room, especially since the room next to it (there is no door inbetween) has a glass sliding door to the backyard. But even at noon, my mom finds some obsessive reason to turn the light on- despite her not even being in it. I always complain, but she tells me "You don't pay the electric bill, don't worry." But not only is it wasteful, but I get light headaches very easily. >_<

Oh, and don't even get me started on how wasteful our schools are with lighting... (Let me just say, we go to put in a video. They turn the lights off, and there's STILL a glare on the tv.. The room looks exactly the same.)

OMG, I know what you mean, Psycho_Katie!! It's SO annoying at school when they have that "emergency" light on at all times...UGH! And at one of my elementary schools (heh...I switched schools a lot), they would ALWAYS leave the lamps on!! Even in broad daylight! Ugh!

There are many bands out there that are conscious about whats going on in our world; Incubus-big on global warming, System of a down- understands the environment, Tool-conscious about society and what the human race is doing, A Perfect Circle- same as tool but in a more organic fashion. I recommend these bands to anyone that wants to hear the other side to whats going on in the world instead of bands that sing about going out and partying, along with singing about sex. Some bands are too blinded by their own greed to make a song about actual world issues!

Yeah, I know...Practically every song I hear nowadays is about breaking up, being in "absolute, eternal" love (and then in comes the break-up songs. -_-'), or sex... rolleyes
