The good old debate over the genre called Acid Jazz. Some people categorise it as part of the big Jazz family. Some says Acid Jazz is not Jazz. So what do you think?

It's just my personal opinion, but I think Acid Jazz is closer to Funk than it is to Jazz.

Yeh. I've met a couple of people who would swear that Acid Jazz is not Jazz.
I'm somewhere in the borderline between the agreeing and disagreeing. Or rather uncertain, I should say ^^

It depends on each specific song I think. Some would be closer to Jazz than others etc.

Play Cantaloop by US3 for them that's a pretty good acid jazz song.

Total. Genius. My two cents, Acid Jazz is definitely more jazzy than just regular, good ol' electronic music. For instance, lots of electronic music is dance, which has a straight rhythm, but most acid jazz has elements of swing or at least syncopation. If not that, then certain jazz harmonies or melodies, etc.

i consider acid jazz to be part of the jazz family and funk and fushion for that matter too. But i do think that it depends on the band. Some have jazz influence but i wouldnt necessarily call them "Jazz", and some lean to other genres.

From my experience, there are two main defining features which make acid jazz (jazz-funk) a jazz genre. The first feature is that it may usually run longer than most funk songs because of more improvisation. The second feature is that whoever is playing it is usually a jazz artist.

For example, the Blackbyrds, a jazz-funk group formed by Donald Byrd, had songs that went on for 8 mins long. It was considered to be jazz because of large amount of improvisation and the fact that the Blackbyrds were working under a jazz influence (Donald Byrd).

it really depends on the song. i mean, some are close to funk while others are close to jazz, ect.

sadly, i've never heard of any acid jazz. can anyone give me a definition and a couple of noticeable artists from that genre, maybe even some well-known tunes from acid jazz?

Alot of acid jazz is just techno or house music with clips of jazz solos from other songs spliced in. but there are some bands/artists (Cantaloop, St. Germain) that actually have managed to fuse them together. But everyone has their own definition of acid jazz. It's like comparing bebop to hard bop. Besides little differences, one can only tell by the years

Some of those bands actually have live horns in them
