Red-like-fire had things to do today. He needed to visit a friend for a recipe for a delicious drink that he had heard was popular with said friend's friends. Unfortunately for him, said friend didn't live too close. He had already been walking for half a day. His hooves were starting to hurt, and he knew they'd be killing him later. He sniffed the air, smelling for water, and when that failed, he tried to listen to it. Fortunately, it was easier for him to hear water than to smell it. It appeared there was a loud stream nearby, hopefully it would be clean water and not swamp water. He headed off in the direction his ears led him, hoping for a break and a drink, and hopefully even some berries or fruit.

It was the kind of quiet, calm day that Only Dreaming liked the most. It was most unfortunate then that the doe couldn’t seem to enjoy it as much she wanted. As if bugs were under her skin all day she had kept moving through the swamp, growing increasingly disgruntled by her mood.
Eventually she had made her way to a clear stream that cut through the muck of the swamp and has simply curled her legs up beneath her, letting the swift, clean waters run along her belly. That was where she was when she caught the sound of something large moving towards her position; as it grew closer, the particular movement giving it away as another Kimeti.
Her head turning to face the direction of her future visitor, she otherwise did not budge from where she was. But her body tensed and her gaze narrowed into wariness. It was not often that she would desire company and any other time she simply would have gotten up to leave; however today Only Dreaming would welcome the interruption.

Red had finally made it close enough to see the other kimeti laying in the stream. Great, he thought. He was starting to get tired, and already bad enough at getting to know new kimeti. He was in no mood to stumble through introductions. She was looking straight at him, too, there was no way he could just ignore her.
"I'm sorry to disrupt you, miss, but I'll only be here a little while. I'll be gone after I rest."
He put his front hooves into the cool water, feeling the relief. He knelt down into the river and slowly drank, knowing how important hydration was on such a journey and knowing that drinking too much too quickly could also impede it. The way the cool water felt on his dry lips and throbbing hooves soon had him fully laying in the stream, just as the doe was. He felt awkward laying down and saying nothing, but the water felt just too good.

The doe’s ears flickered forward when the other Kimeti finally made it to the stream. He didn’t seem too thrilled by her presence, but that she could understand and at least he was civil about it. Only Dreaming inclined her head to the male once he had spoken; her tail moving idly through the water and flicking water droplets onto her back. Innately cautious, she continued on with simply staring and waiting, holding the silence for many long moments after he had laid himself down.
“You look tired.” She eventually spoke, giving a blunt statement. “Water is a great relief.” If he wished to respond in any sort of way he was welcome to, and if he chose not to, that was fine as well. To be honest Only Dreaming found him quite pleasing to the eye and for the moment his presence had stilled the restlessness within her. Thus he was welcome.

"Yeah, I am a little tired." He glanced at the doe, wondering if he really looked that tired. Suddenly he looked back at her, not staring, but definitely not a glance. She was... very pretty. Maybe this would be worth the introduction.
"I'm on a trip to see a friend. She has a new recipe for a drink that she says I have to have, and knowing her, it really is worth the trip to have. And yes, water is a wonderful relief, especially when it's cold and crisp like this stream. And with the sun warmly shining down on your back.
My name is Red-like-fire, would you mind if I asked yours?"
He tried to phrase this in a chivalrous tone, not demanding her name, but not shyly making excuses for her not to give her name. She was a very pretty doe, he wanted to come off as pleasing to her.

“A new drink.” Only Dreaming repeated softly. As far as she was concerned you needed no other liquid than water. But she knew some enjoyed experimenting with different flavours. So she did not scoff, she simply tilted her head in a polite gesture to show she was listening as he continued to speak.
“It sounds like you will have an enjoyable day.” Never once had Only gone to ‘visit a friend’. She didn’t even have any. She only had brief contact with other Kimeti, most meetings much similar to this one. “The sun and water make good companions.”
When the buck asked for her name; she gave a pleased smile. “I am Only Dreaming.” She watched him for a moment and then rose in one smooth motion, water dripping from her legs and underside. The doe again turned her unflinching gaze towards him and made quite clear her intentions.
“I would not wish to take you from your trip and your friend; however I am lonely today and would enjoy your company for a time. I’m sure it could be pleasurable for the both of us.” She had no need of games. He either would or he wouldn’t.

Red was shocked into silence for a brief moment. While he had been hoping to gain her company, but he wasn't expecting her to cut to the chase. He grinned.
"My friend can wait, I don't need to get to her right now. I can put off my journey for a while, a few days even, if need be. And I could use a nice break as well."
He stood as well, casually shaking off the stream water.
"Only Dreaming, a lovely name for a lovely doe. I think the sun and the water will make good companions for us today." He suddenly paused to laugh. "I suppose my day will be enjoyable, but it shall be thanks to you." After a small pause, he thought to add with a wink "Sweet Dreaming." He waded through the water toward her.

Her eyes glittered with a hint of amusement. She wouldn’t tell him a few days would not necessary, just the one would suit her fine. The doe watched his rise and approach with a half-lidded gaze and she let out a soft humming sound at him compliments. At least he was eager; that would suit her well. But he would have to wait a bit longer at least.
She allowed him to get closer and once he was in range she shifted forward to brush her cheek against his, before turning away in the same movement and walking quite deliberately away from him upstream.
“We have all day, dear Red. I wish to eat and enjoy your company in other ways first.” She beckoned him to follow her with a flick of her tail “Walk with me and if you please you tell me a bit about yourself.”

Red was speechless for a second. He wasn't expecting her to want to spend time with him, but he was very pleased that she wanted to.
And the feeling of her cheek on his....
"Well...." He waded through the water to catch up and walk beside her, and the feeling of her cheek on his....
"Well, I love food and drink, especially the good kind. That's why I was heading to my friend's for her new recipe. I love journeys, preferably ones that aren't too long, because I always meet interesting people on them."
He threw a sidelong glance and a grin at his companion.
"I'd go on, but I don't want to seem like a windbag. Of course, if you're still curious about me, I'll keep going."
He wanted to ask about her, but he thought he'd seem more polite if he let her venture information rather than asking for it. It would also give her the option of not sharing if she didn't want to. Even though he was very curious about her.

Only Dreaming smiled as he spoke; nodding now and then as she continued to lead the way upstream. “Please do go on. I am quite curious.” She did not feel like any questions about herself and much preferred to take this chance to see how other Kimeti lived. She flicked her tail to the side thoughtfully. Well, she had to at least give something to Red if she expected him to continue.
“I also like journeys. Though my entire life is one since I have no place I consider home.” She looked back at him; waiting for him to start talking again and hoping he would not take this chance to ply her with questions.

"No home?" Red looked at the other kimeti in curiosity. "I've never met a kimeti that didn't have a permanent home. Granted, I haven't met too many kimeti period. Rather, I've met them, but I haven't got to know them well enough to see their homes or lack thereof, if you see what I'm saying." He paused to think. "Though, I suppose it's actually odd that I haven't met more kimeti that don't have a permanent home. I suppose I just don't talk to other kimeti enough."
He caught himself almost asking her a question, but remembered his previous conviction not to.
"I have a small garden behind the hollowed out tree that I call my home. You'd be surprised at how many delicious things you can pull just from a small garden. Though I don't really live close to clean water, so it's almost a mini-journey just to water my plants."
Red felt like he had gone on too long once more, so he fell silent and waited for more encouragement from Only Dreaming.

“When the swamp is your home you do not need a permanent resting place.” She breathed out softly.” Only Dreaming offered in a soft voice. Her ears perked up in interest as he mentioned a garden. That was not a concept she really understood. She was happy to search for the wild plants. “It sounds like it requires a lot of dedication to keep your plants happy and well watered. That is admirable.” Even if she did think it would be more appropriate to either move closer to clean water or leave only the strongest of the plants to survive.
Only Dreaming nodded at him to show she was pleased with the conversation and then started veering off sideways. “This way.” She left the stream and began following a well worn path that snaked its way through the trees and bushes. “Please continue Red. Or perhaps I will be kind.” Looking back at him, she gave a playful smile. “Do you have any questions for me?”

Red wanted to explain to her the joy he got from taking care of his plants, from having something depend completely on him, how fulfilling it was to care for them.
But she had offered to let him ask her a question, and he just couldn't pass that up. He quickly trotted after her, brain moving at light speed, trying to think of something worth while to ask her.
"How kind of you to offer," he said, stalling for just a few more seconds. "You've obviously been to many places across the swamp, have you ever found anything truly beautiful?"
He was quite pleased with this question, he managed not to ask any personal questions, and it sounded quite romantic. He plodded beside her, looking sideways at her out of one eye.

The fact that he seemed to understand what it meant for her to offer him an insight into her life, gave him quite a good standing in her mind. Only Dreaming had come across others before who had simply bombarded her with questions. Those ones she quickly left behind, slipping away without a word.
When Red finally voiced his questions, her ears gave the smallest flicker of surprise. Not what she had expected. This was not a directly personal question and that made her smile. She took some time to think about it, to answer truthfully.
“I consider the everywhere in the swamp beautiful in its own way…” She started with, pausing again for a bit before she continued. “When I was young I was exploring the edge of the swamp and I fell down a crack in the earth. Not a big fall, but the walls were too steep to climb. Night came and I was still there. When I looked up all I could see was a blanket of stars and it felt like they were watching over me. It was soothing.”
Only Dreaming did not elaborate on how she had gotten out of the predicament; she fell into silence, remembering a young filly’s moment of wonder.
