I feel like a lot of my peers find it odd that I'm so interested in religion and view being a Catholic as a huge part of my life. It seems every time I ask a question about something that happens to be in the Bible, like what a passage says or something, my sister says "Ok, great." and then she attempts to change the subject, much to my annoyance. I joined this guild because I find Christianity to be very interesting. I've always thought it was interesting, really, ever since I was about 3. But as I got older I went to CCD, which I liked and everything, but I don't know. I guess you could say I got sick of giving up an hour or two in the middle of the week when I could be joining all these clubs with my friends. Now that I'm older, I appreciate things a bit more and think, "Hey, you know what? Jesus was a pretty amazing guy." I guess you could say I'm a born-again Christian, but not really because I've always loved being a Christian, it's just in more recent years I've learned to appreciate it more and view that obligation in a similar, yet more analytic way, that I did when I was a preschooler. I guess you could say I'm looking at it with my eyes open a little wider. Anyway, sorry for ranting a little bit there, but I'm just curious, I guess, if anyone else has been ridiculed for being a bit "too holy"? I don't know, just thought I'd mention it

I definitely understand what you're saying, but try looking at it from their point of view. Christians (especially Catholics) have a reputation for being intolerant and judgmental. This reputation often precedes them. As such when some non-Christians encounter a Christian who's very devout in their faith, it intimidates them. They expect to be judged. They expect to be argued with. They expect to be looked down upon and ridiculed. Naturally, they try to avoid the situation by either changing the subject or turning the tables and judging you before you get a chance to judge them. I'm not saying they should act this way, but their motivation is understandable.

Well I'm not a Christian or actually a member of this guild but I figured, hey, I can post, and I think I can clear up some of your confusion for you, so, I guess I will.

I was agnostic for a long time before finally deciding I was atheist. I stayed in the closet because when I had been agnostic, there had been so many people hating on atheists and labeling them as evil Satan-worshippers that I didn't dare tell anyone. But then some douchebag got a hold of it and told every person who mentioned it and for two years I never heard the end of it. Even my boyfriend tried to shove scripture down my throat. Eventually they all forgot and moved on with their lives because they realized they had better things to do than condemn me for my evil, ruinous ways, but I was still terrified of the devout because my experience had been that once they got on the subject of religion, the only direction it could go from there was how I was not religious enough.

So you see, they're not ridiculing you. They're scared. Pious people tend to think other people aren't pious enough and they tend to tell them as such. Get a pious person talking and you're only half a step away from getting them talking at you about what a terrible human being you are. At least, that's what most people think, and that's how some devout Christians actually are, so it's not an unfounded fear. My extremely fundamental boyfriend at the time and my Episcapalian best friend had a few rounds because he said Episcapalians 'weren't real Christians'. I had to keep them apart after that.

These days, I am actually very parallel to you in some of the ways you regard your religion. I think it is fascinating and complex and reveals much about individuals themselves and society as a whole. There's plenty to appreciate about it whether it's true or not. I love to hear what people have to say about God. Everybody's beliefs are different and unique, just like them. I have great conversations with my ultra-religious friends. Nobody's trying to convert; I ask them tough questions, and they ask me tough questions, and we try to listen and understand each other's positions. But the first few times we do this, they often express to me the same thing you are expressing: that most people dislike these subjects and tend to shut them down. I'm an extremely open-minded person and I like to listen to what all sides have to say, but I'm one in a million when it comes to that. For the great majority, you will find a lack of willingness to listen out of fear, and it is unfortunate.

So when it comes down to it, they're just wary of the subject. Again, for some devout people, the topic of God, Jesus, and the Bible is just a step away from a guilt-heavy lecture.

And now I will haul my atheist butt out of here before the hounds find me. Just thought I'd give you a point of view from the other side before I did!
