I tried posting this topic in "Artists and Poets Inspiration Corner", but nobody in this guild anyone goes there anymore …
For those that I haven't met before, I'm one of many artists on Gaia. Anyhow, I'm wondering on what kind of art people usually look for in art shops ? This will help me figure out what I should do once it starts up.

1. What do you normally order when you want avatar art ? (Ex. chibi, bust, full body)
2. Do you like your artwork to have a background ?
3. Do you want a copy of your artwork made to put in your signature (500 x 500 pixels) ?
4. Do you like simple art or lots of detail ?

I might as well answer my own questions since I'm still awake.
1. What do you normally order when you want avatar art ? (Ex. chibi, bust, full body)
I like seeing full body art. As an artist, I like to see how well the artist handles anatomy. Personally, I don't feel challenged when I draw chibis or bust shots.
2. Do you like your artwork to have a background ?
Depending on the circumstances. If the character is sitting down, I would at least like to see a rock or a grassy field or something. Do you see Spider Man clinging onto a white sheet of paper ?
3. Do you want a copy of your artwork made to put in your signature (500 x 500 pixels) ?
It doesn't matter to me. If I got art from someone, I would shrink it myself in Photoshop.
4. Do you like simple art or lots of detail ?
I like both.
5. Type of art ? Realism, Anime, etc.
I like drawing mecha art, fantasy, some realism, and fantasy art.
6. Payment method ? (Ex. Pay before ordering, half now + half once it's done, pay when it is done)
I prefer paying everything up front. That way I don't forget.
7. Do you usually include items with gold for ordering art ?
Personally, I'd rather have people pay in gold only. That's how I would also pay for art. Adding in items gets complicated because market prices rise and drop constantly on Gaia.
8. Do you like people who keep bumping art shops ?
If I was running one, I would say no. I prefer to have conversations with other customers and visitors. Bumping has always annoyed me since I started posting in Gaia.
9. What was the longest you've ever waited for free/paid art ? Were you satisfied with the wait ?
The longest I've waited was a couple of months. It wasn't a big deal to me. Depending on things here, I take about a few weeks depending on what goes on in my personal life.
10. How expensive is TOO expensive for commissioned art ?
I've seen outrageous prices for art in auctions and shops that didn't take much effort at all. I promise not to make it expensive for anyone.
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ?
It would be cool, but it never happens with the shops I've been to. I do offer free art and discounts for my shop. How that will happen is my own secret.
12. Do you normally refer other people to your favorite art shop ?
I always keep links in my profile or will refer others if they are looking for artists.
13. What are your thoughts regarding bribes ? Do you feel that it is unfair for those that don't have a lot of gold ?
Bribes are a way to make a lazy artist go to work. New customers with less gold will just be bummed out in the end. It should be used only as special incentive to the customer. The only thing I have priced for bribes is my mecha art.
14. Please post some bad experiences you've had with art shops here on Gaia.
Too many to list:
1. Lazy artist(s) that puts more work on their personal side projects while customers are waiting for their art that they paid for.
2. Shop menu is really unorganized. Colored text with various alignments, random images, small text, dead shop links,etc.
3. People that post HUGE shop banners. I prefer 200 x 40 banners.
4. Repeat customers that hog up every open slot. I've seen some that hog up 2-3 slots just because they have gold. That's not fair to new customers.
5. Freeloaders that only hang around for free art. I don't cater to freeloaders.
That's all I can think of for now.

-Depends upon the avi, usually chibi.

-again depends upon the avi, I usually leave that up to the artists.

-Nope, I don't like having images in my signature, plus that arts I get usually end up in my journal.
4. Do you like simple art or lots of detail ?
- Depends upon the avi. Usually I tell people to leave stuff off if I have a complicated avi.
5. Type of art ? Realism, Anime, etc.
-Anime preferred.
6. Payment method ? (Ex. Pay before ordering, half now + half once it's done, pay when it is done)
-I used to pay the full amount up front. Given an incident now, however, I'd prefer to start trade with full and have the artist accept once, and leave it till the art is done.
7. Do you usually include items with gold for ordering art ?
- Usually just gold. I've paid for art with Thank You letters once, every other time it's been gold.
8. Do you like people who keep bumping art shops ?
- Not really, makes it hard to find things in the thread, like someone's post if you were talking to them.
9. What was the longest you've ever waited for free/paid art ? Were you satisfied with the wait ?
-Free a few weeks... paid... over 6 months, see question 14.
10. How expensive is TOO expensive for commissioned art ?
- Depends upon the artist, personally I wouldn't pay over 200K for art, but that's just me.
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ?
- Those would be nice, kinda swore off buying art after a bad experience.
12. Do you normally refer other people to your favorite art shop ?
- I have in the past. At one point I linked art I got to the artists shop...
13. What are your thoughts regarding bribes ? Do you feel that it is unfair for those that don't have a lot of gold ?
-Bribes are complicated. On one hand I see the appeal, however their not really fair if all slots are filled and someone comes in and gets bumped to the front of the list due to a bribe. People tend to get upset when they've been on a list for a long time and keep getting pushed down due to bribes...
14. Please post some bad experiences you've had with art shops here on Gaia.
- Had two incident, ordered art from someone, started trade, and they vanished from Gaia, to never be seen again, over two years ago.
-Second one, and the one that keeps me from getting art. Ordered it from a friend and paid for it, she vanished for a month, came back started taking more orders and had every excuse from her scanner broke to she didn't have time to give it to me, while doing orders the whole time. Told her she had two weeks to get it to me, and three weeks later (as I was starting to fill out a scam report) she finally got it to me. (Should mention it took 6-8 months for her to finally get the art to me)

Three months? Yes it was wonderful, and a big surprise because I forgot all about it lol.

Most of the time I want either Full-Body or a Bust.
Chibis are cute and all, but if I wanted something simple I'd do it myself ya know?

Unless it directly involves the subject matter, no.
Detailed backgrounds delay the process, and usually don't add much to the completed work.
My opinion of course.
3. Do you want a copy of your artwork made to put in your signature (500 x 500 pixels) ?
That'd be really nifty!
4. Do you like simple art or lots of detail ?
Somewhere in between, unless I pay extra because I like your style and want more of it.
Something you did in two minutes isn't worth buying, I could've done it.
5. Type of art ? Realism, Anime, etc.
Anything with Organic roots. A mixture between realism that isn't quite so mechanical.
6. Payment method ? (Ex. Pay before ordering, half now + half once it's done, pay when it is done)
Half Now - Half Later is always nice.
As a consumer it gives me some insurance that you won't cheat me, and some insurance that you will get the job done.
If you want the other half of course. cool
7. Do you usually include items with gold for ordering art ?
Almost never.
8. Do you like people who keep bumping art shops ?
When they bump too often it can be difficult to find the relevant posts.
9. What was the longest you've ever waited for free/paid art ? Were you satisfied with the wait ?
Hm, I've waited a week - two months.
Wasn't thrilled with the finished product, but I couldn't blame the person because they were rushed and overloaded with work.
10. How expensive is TOO expensive for commissioned art ?
I don't like paying over 50k.
Not because I'm cheap or anything, but because the art is meant to be a fun way to express yourself.
Not to monopolize on and make it cheap.
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ?
Free art for repeat customers is a great incentive to make me want to come back for a visit!
I wouldn't mind recieving quick chibi for my loyal service!
12. Do you normally refer other people to your favorite art shop ?
If I'm really impressed with the quality of work and atmosphere I may mention how the piece came about.
Unless directly complimented I generally keep it to myself.
13. What are your thoughts regarding bribes ? Do you feel that it is unfair for those that don't have a lot of gold ?
Theres a fine line between being greedy, and being fair.
Bribes shouldn't be implemented in my opinion because they are unfair to the people who have been waiting for that special piece.
They only benefit the rich, and in my eyes - paints you as a moneygrubbing artist who only cares about making a buck.
Not about pleasing your customers.
14. Please post some bad experiences you've had with art shops here on Gaia.
As mentioned above, I once had to wait two months for the commissioned artist to finish with his bribed work; before he would start on mine.
Even though I was on the list days before the newcomers.
I dislike it when Artists jump straight into the pricing as well.
I'd like to see examples of your style before you try to shove your high prices down my throat.

I think it depends on how much the artist is having to do (Ex. Full body vs. head shot) I think anything above 30k is too much. It also depends on the skill of the artist

Communication I'd say was one bad experience. I hate having to wait for ever for a reply to a PM and it makes me feel unsure about the artist that they will supply the art. Also, I like to know when they are beginning to work on my request so I'm not completely left in the dark.

Not complicated ones usually, simple bgs of a color or something to accent the main focus sometimes.

Usually just ask them if it's alright for me to resize for that reason, but if I didn't know how I'd most likely request it.

Really it depends on the caliber of artist, if their style/ability suits detail, sure if not simple is fine.
5. Type of art ? Realism, Anime, etc.
Anime/US comic style and the the between of the two is my favorite choice.
6. Payment method ? (Ex. Pay before ordering, half now + half once it's done, pay when it is done)
I like it when it's send the payment, but not confirmed until deliver/completion.
7. Do you usually include items with gold for ordering art ?
Only if that's what the shop owner wants.

for unbusy shops, yes, for shops that have a steady stream/chat base, no.

It's been so long I don't remember..

Really anything above 100,000g for a full body is too rich for me... but if the artist works hard on it and it shows I don't mind dropping 200,000k

"I usually order just a head shot or if I feel like they have good enough art that I'd tip, I'll ask for a chibi full body."
2. Do you like your artwork to have a background ?
"I haven't experienced getting a background yet, mostly because I get free art so I'm not too picky. But depending on what it was, I'm sure it would look amazing."

"I would, yes. It would be nice to have the original sized artwork but also to have a signature appropriate size so I can show off the work. I'm not skilled enough to re-size it myself."

"I love both, but I really do prefer lots of detail. That gives me more to look at."

"I love any kind of art. A variety is good."

"I'm too trusting, so if the artist asked, I'd pay up front. But I'd prefer paying after I get the art so I know that I'll get the art, although the artist would want to insure that you would pay, so half now and half when it's complete is probably best."

"I've never done a bribe art before, and also, I'm very poor, so I don't."
8. Do you like people who keep bumping art shops ?
"Yes, people bumping in your art shop is a good idea in my opinion because it keeps the posts going up and so it pops up in the Forum Pulse so people have more of a chance of seeing it."
9. What was the longest you've ever waited for free/paid art ? Were you satisfied with the wait ?
"I'm very patient, and if it becomes too long, I simply forget about it and then am pleasantly surprised to find out they finished. I don't mind getting art sooner, but that sometimes means that the art is lower quality. I don't mind waiting. It puts less pressure on the artist."
10. How expensive is TOO expensive for commissioned art ?
"I... Wouldn't know for this one. I think it would really depend on the artist and the quality of their work. But... Were money not limited for me, I'd say the MOST I'd ever pay for commissioned art would be... At most, 100,000 gold. But then again, I don't know."
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ?
"I love free arts, simply because I'm poor and don't have to pay for it, but I do tip every now and again."

"If I had a favorite art shop, I totally would."

"I think.. It isn't really fair for those of us who can't afford to buy big items, and I think that there aren't enough artists that just want gold or the satisfaction of making other people happy but eh. What's an opinion, right?"

"I've never had a bad experience with art shops other than just being ignored. I think the best tip I can give you on starting your art shop is to let every person who comes in know whether you're considering them or whether you just aren't feeling up to drawing their avi at the time. That's the best I can tell you."

Depends on the avi that I want done.

Only if it really adds to the piece. Mostly I just want my avi.

It's nice as an option, but I don't really put art into my signature. If I really want to, I can make it that size myself.

As long as its worth the gold and it fits the type of image I want, either is ok.

I kind of like the anime style better, but if you do really great realistic style then its turns out really cool too.

I start the trade with the artist and then, once I get the final piece, I'll finish the trade. Half now, half later is good but I can still risk loosing gold if they don't finish it.

Not generally. If I have an item from their wishlist, and they'll take it for the art, I might.

If its not to frequent and its not the only posts then its ok. I wouldn't want to see a shop that only has bumps and a few posts of orders.

My other account is still waiting on two free pieces (I believe its two, for sure one) but I can't even remember who they were from so it doesn't really matter to much to me.
{Edit 06/07/2011 22:02 PST: I got offered free art on Wed Aug 27, 2008 11:51 pm (PST). I found the pm when cleaning out the savebox for the account.}
When I paid for art, I think it was only a week or two. The art was actually cute so it was great.

Depends on how good the art is and how detailed I want it. Generally I don't want to spend more then 100k.
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ?
I love free art. Discounts are nice but it shouldn't be the only thing that draws people to the shot.
When I give out art, its always free.
12. Do you normally refer other people to your favorite art shop ?
Yes. If I get art, I'll generally link it to the shop or profile so that people know where to get it if they want it.

As long as the bribe doesn't take some one else's slot, it can be ok. I think bribes should only be used to let you get something extra in the art you want.

The one who makes you cry isn't worth your tears. 1. What do you normally order when you want avatar art ? (Ex. chibi, bust, full body)
Chibi/Full Body.
2. Do you like your artwork to have a background ?
If it has a background in the reference.
3. Do you want a copy of your artwork made to put in your signature (500 x 500 pixels) ?
Nope. I just resize it myself usually. Only for post styles though.
4. Do you like simple art or lots of detail ?
Detailed.
5. Type of art ? Realism, Anime, etc.
Anime usually.
6. Payment method ? (Ex. Pay before ordering, half now + half once it's done, pay when it is done)
Payment after receiving a watermarked version.
7. Do you usually include items with gold for ordering art ?
Sometimes.
8. Do you like people who keep bumping art shops ?
It doesn't bother me.
9. What was the longest you've ever waited for free/paid art ? Were you satisfied with the wait ?
Some were never even received. Though from the ones I've received, several months. Worth it though.
10. How expensive is TOO expensive for commissioned art ?
There's no actual answer for this in my opinion. It's a personal preference.
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ?
Love them!

Yes!

Yes, unless the avatar is rather complex and it would therefore distract from it.

A couple months I think it was. It was alright, but I haven't really bought much art since and I didn't use it.

Yes, it is unfair. It's frowned upon in real life, so why would anyone think it's okay in a virtual world? Regardless that it exists/happens in many places, doesn't make it right.

Well, I suppose the only real problems I/people I know have had are with artists who just ignore your requests, don't ever get around to them, or end up closing shop after you made a request.

4. Do you like simple art or lots of detail ? usually simple is fine, although sometimes I am in the mood for more detailed

6. Payment method ? (Ex. Pay before ordering, half now + half once it's done, pay when it is done) I am torn on this one I know it is hard on an artist but I think half and half is best, that way we both get what we want....

10. How expensive is TOO expensive for commissioned art ? It depends on the work but I tend to be cheaper than most I guess cause I would NOT pay over certain amounts for art. Maybe 10 for chibi, and no more than about 30K for full....
11. Do you like to receive free art or discounts every now and then ? Of course I think everyone does, I have some that are ummmm lets say not very good, but because they are form friends they are in with the best Ive gotten. smile
