Lately, the government has been tapping the phones of "Suspected people" And they hav been trying to make this a nationwide policy

*meaning EVERYONE*

What do you think of the Gov't's wire tapping policy? Should terrorist organizations be reason enough to let them tap every phone line in the nation? Or check what we buy online, or who we contact? Or basically use every bit of data on us from our beginings into adulthood againest us?

I think it is a gross invasion of privacy. However, this is what the majority of Americans want nowadays. They are willing to sacrifice their freedoms and liberties that our forefathers fought so hard for becuase the government gives them the Illusion of safety in return. At this rate, we would be better off moving to North Korea... mad

Wow...that's just...wow...

SO FRIGGIN' STUPID. Honestly. I don't want my decision to buy some things used against me when trying to get a job or something. "Well, it seems you bought a hentai video so we can't hire you because we find hentai morally wrong..." Just an example. They could use anything, really. I'm violently opposed to that.

I find it rediculous because its going to be so easy for the government to abuse it. Not to mention there is no telling how far it will go. Ya sure, people say that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about. But the 4th ammendment (im almost positive its the 4th) is what promises us protection from things like this.

Having nothing to hide is one thing, but I don't people are going to want to order certain services anymore if their transactions and such are being monitered... and people wonder why I consider moving to Canada...

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I'm unsure if that is a real Jefferson quote, however, it accurately summarizes the situation.

Anyone who says "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about", should be reminded of this.

When they came for the Communists, I did not rise, for I was not a Communist.
When they came for the Jews, I did not rise, for I was not a Jew.
When they came for the Trade Unions, I did not rise, for I did not work for a Trade Union.
When they came for me, there was no one left to stand for me.

Oh, they're so totally going to get hooked on the juicy conversations that I have:

"Hey you!"
"Hey"
"Wanna hang out and watch some movies?"
"Hey, sure! Sounds like a plan!"
"Let's meet around 7ish, or so, is that good for you?"
"Sure!"
"Cool"
"Yeah..."
"Oh, right, and by the way, let's get the plans together for the SECRET INVASION OF AMERICA, ok?"
"Like, totally!"
"See ya!"

Oh yeah.... I'm such a threat, there.

It's not as weird as Korea, though. I hear that there is actually a phenomenon there where a bunch of people on a train were mad at this girl who was just letting her poodle poop all over the floor, so they all took pictures of her with their cellphones and posted them on the net, asking if anyone knew her. Somehow, they got her information and began calling her parents and telling them about what a disgraceful daughter they have, and eventually the girl got so upset she threatened suicide, and now there's a government network set up to moniter her so she can't kill herself and there are tons of people calling her and begging her not to kill herself.

All because of one little event.

That's pretty over the top, ne?

Then she shouldn't have let her dog poo all over the place! Argh, kids these days... I mean geez!

Anyway I disapprove of that notion, "less freedom for security". I'm grateful I live in PR for this and other reasons.

No offense, but in England that doesn't sound like that far of a leap considering the extensive use of suveillance cameras that are spread throughout the cities... neutral

It is a nice little leap, since the cameras have worked, and it only surveys public life, not your privacy.

I think Captain Picard puts it fairly succinctly.

"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."

There was actually this guy who was trying to figure out why the police didn't seem to respond well to rapes being perpetrated in the public areas (especially after a specific incident where a woman called about having been raped, and the cops took about two hours to get to her while she was shivering and freaking out at a phone booth).

So he dressed up in a weird alien costume and began walking around the camera'ed areas just doing normal stuff at around 3 AM. Sure enough, within five minutes, cops in multiple cop cars came out and asked him what he was doing.

Britain got pretty embarrassed over that, considering that the woman was waiting for 2 HOURS after being raped, and yet a guy doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but wearing an alien costume got the response of two to three cop cars.
