Though she is not very open about herself or her past, Rina is very friendly and will talk to anyone as long as they speak to her first. She enjoys being around people, and is what one would call ‘charismatic’. She likes to tease her close friends, though it is all in good fun, and she is actually very protective of them. Rina can be very proud, especially when it comes to fighting and injuries; she likes to deny that she is hurt, and becomes displeased when people insist on pointing out her pain and shortcomings. Behaviour|| A generally kind individual, she does not stand for bullying or demeaning of any sort. She is quick to defend anyone who needs it, though this often gets her into trouble. History|| High above the land, somewhere out over the sea, there is a large castle in the sky. The castle walls are made of clouds, and it is here that the Sylphid Monarchs live. The current king, King Ariel, has 11 children; 3 from his first wife, and 6 from his second {and current} wife. Rina is the youngest of his children from his first wife, and the only daughter. Her mother, the late Queen Tyria, died giving birth to what would have been her younger sister. Sadly, both were lost in due to very difficult labor. The King spent years out of the public eye grieving before finally remarrying. Since she is only the third child in the royal line, Rina was allowed to pursue her own interests. She spent most of her years traveling the world, playing ambassador to the various Sylphid settlements located across the continents. When her father remarried, however, she cut off a majority of the reports and messages home. Instead of returning in person, she sent emissaries with carefully written reports to her oldest brother. She does not like her stepmother by any means, and so has not seen her home in many years. Rina has never met any of her younger siblings, only knowing about them from the letters she exchanges with her older brothers. Eventually, the Sylphid Princess grew out of her wanderlust, and began to search for a place where she could settle down. Knowing full well that visitations to the outer Sylphid settlements were common enough, she instead sought a place where her father would simply not have time to visit. Hearing of Reed’s through the nearby settlement, Rina decided it was worth a try.
Post Time Skip
While the princess isn't necessarily a big fan of the distance between herself and her boyfriend, she knows that she could reach him if need be; they visit frequently during their time off from school. While the princess has started to receive requests for her return home, she has flat out refused every time. To distract herself from family business and Andrew's absence, Rina threw herself into her school work and decided to double major in both Music and Drama. Why bother when she'll probably never get to use them? To give the figurative bird to her father, of course. However, news of her oldest brother's engagement and upcoming wedding have reached her ears, and she knows there is no way she can skip it. While not exactly happy about it, the young Sylph hopes that Andrew is up for a visit to her home town. Now, how to tell him...?

☁Sylph 101☁With Professor RinaHey you!
 You want to know about Sylphs? Alright, then listen carefully~ The Basics ☁Sylphs☁Okay, first things first. We're not fairies. We're air spirits. There is a big difference! Sylphs have one element, air, and that's all. We have a few extra abilities, we can become invisible and we can fly, but that's about it. No fancy fire or water powers. Air. That's it. {Unless, of course, you study magic and become a Mage.}
We have stronger immune systems than humans, and have very few terminal diseases. We don't need nearly as much oxygen as humans, so we can fly high up where the air is thinner. Our bones are lighter, but stronger than a human's; contrary to popular belief, they are not at all hollow like the bones of birds. Unlike birds, we use simple magic to stay aloft; even very young Sylphs can master flight, as it is a basic instinct for our kind. The flow of magic to keep us aloft is natural, and we do not require spells.☁Life Span☁Sylphs generally live a couple hundred years, though it is said there is a Mage in the Apennines who is well over one thousand. {I've met her personally, but she wouldn't tell me how old she was. She claims it's unladylike to tell people your age.} Like humans, our diets and living habits can affect how long we live, but it is very rare for a Sylph to die before the two hundred mark. We aren't generally considered mature adults until after our first century has passed. Half and Quarter Sylphs also tend to make it to the two hundred mark, but any less than that results in a longer than average, but still reasonably human, lifespan.☁System of Government☁Like many other species, Sylphs are united under a Royal Family. All Sylphid rulers are referred to as the Basileus, whether they are male or female. While the heir is generally the first born, this can change if the first born is inept, or another child is found more suitable. Every Sylphid village has a Primicerius, basically a mayor, who is elected by the people and approved by the Basileus. They keep the village running smoothly, and settle any disputes brought before them. Sylphid communities tend to be small, but for the bigger ones a Vicarius, or assistant, can be elected. Since this person must work very closely with the Primicerius, he or she is generally proposed by the Primicerius and then voted on by the people of the village. Should a Primicerius die or be removed from power, their Vicarius goes with them. A Primicerius does not need royal permission to seek a Vicarius, but a full background check must be submitted to the Office of Commerce before they can be put on the royal payroll; should they be found unfit, they must be replaced, or work for free.
Sylphs have very few laws of consequence, but murder is punishable by banishment to the South Pole; not exactly a death sentence, but very close to it. Crimes such as theft, slander, destruction of property and assault will earn a permanent exile from all settlements. Crime rates are very low among Sylphs, as we are a generally intellectual race. {We value scholars over strong fighters.}☁Living Arrangements☁While we are capable of blending into the human world, we prefer to live among our own people. Sylphs love to fly, and doing such near humans tends to end poorly. {Not to mention frowned upon by the Basileus. It's very wise not to make the Basileus frown.} We prefer to live in small villages in generally unpopulated areas.
A large number of us live in the Royal City, Urbem Ventum. This city is home to the Nubes Castra, the home of the Sylphid Royal Family. The city and the castle are located high above the earth, and is said to be kept aloft by the Basileus's awesome power. This is only partially true, as while the Basileus is put through Mage training, and will assist in keeping the city up in bad weather conditions, it is the Magus Agmen that actually keeps it up. As it floats above the ground and sea, high enough that no human can tell it from another cloud, the city floats all around the globe. ☁Mages☁Since I've mentioned Mages, let's go over them too. The occasional Sylph who shows some magical ability is sent to train under the Regio Magus, the royal family's private Mage. There is at least one Mage per settlement, sometimes as many as five in a big city. They're just like regular Wizards and Witches, except they start with a Sylph 'base' instead of a human 'base'. Mages can range greatly in power, but the strongest are generally offered a place among the Magus Agmen, a small army of Mages who keep the royal city aloft and tend to it's people. Healing is a very common magical ability to strive for, and smaller villages tend to have their Mages learn the healing arts instead of hiring a doctor. Despite what it may sound like, even the less powerful variety of Mages are rare; keep in mind that Sylphs live for a long period of time. Should a village's Mage pass on, they are sent a replacement Mage from the Magus Agmen, at least until a new Mage appears in their own village. {We try to assign Mages to their home village, where they should already know the people, but on occasion a Mage or village rejects the other. In this case, a volunteer from the Magus Agmen is called for. We had never had a shortage of volunteers, but one can be assigned if necessary.}This has been Professor Rina on Sylphs. Come back again, and I'll try and think of something else. If you're still interested, of course. Thanks for listening!

☁Sylph 102☁With Professor RinaBack again, are we? Okay, what else is there to cover? Hm...

Oh, I know! Let's do some common culture, just so you don't accidentally shame yourself should you choose to visit one of our settlements. Maybe a few traditions, while we're at it. Ready? Then let's get down to work.
Culture ☁Dating☁I was going to start at the beginning of life, with babies, but that requires marriage. And what comes before marriage, you ask? Dating, of course! We aren't that much different from humans when it comes to dating, except we don't really have traditional gender roles. A man who chooses to stay home and run the household is no more unusual than a woman who does. {Though this is quite unusual in general, as Sylphs who don't work for a living are laughed at. There are exceptions, of course, but 'housewives' or 'househusbands are virtually nonexistent.} Anyway, dating is taken seriously in the Sylphid community. Those who cheat on their significant others are generally ostracized in their village, and may even be forced in an unofficial exile from their village. When two people decide to make their relationship official, which usually does not occur until after a few dates to ensure they are compatible and their feelings are mutual/strong enough, they exchange the traditional gifts. This is an old tradition, but well liked among Sylphs as it 'marks their territory'. The woman is given a necklace with a feather pendant. These can be bought, or the man can make it himself; however nice the purchased ones may be, and they can be very expensive, the handmade ones are generally envied. The absolute favorite feathers among women are Griffin feathers as they are hard to come by and even harder to part with, but each Sylph tends to have their personal favorite bird from which a feather is most suited. In return, the man receives a trinket of the woman's. The trinket can be anything from a favorite necklace to a small knickknack; it must be something the man can carry with him so long as they are together, and in some families it is tradition to pass down a specific object for this tradition. These gifts are returned should the couple break up, as it is taboo to keep or destroy them should the relationship end. ☁Dates☁Dates themselves are a whole other ball park, so let's go over them real quick before we move on. While they are a part of dating, being exclusive or together is not required for dates. Dates can be between friends, with family members, or with coworkers. In Sylphid culture, it is the duty of the one who proposes the date to pay should another {who is invited} be incapable or not offer. As stated above, Sylphs do not have strong traditional gender roles as do humans, so whoever asks another, or whoever first refers to it as a 'date', is the one who will pay unless another method is discussed. It may or may not be considered rude to offer to pay, depending on the region. It is best to cover payment before the date takes place, so there is no confusion when the check arrives. It is assumed that the asker covers the check, so don't ask unless you intend to pay!☁Marriage☁Should your significant other be the one, you can propose just like any other race. Sylphid marriages/civil unions/whatever are called Adjacios. The word 'adjacio' literally translates to 'adjoin'; an Adjacio is far harder to break than a human marriage, as the ceremony involved is far more intimate. There is no such thing as an "arranged marriage" in the Sylphid culture, as it is considered barbaric and in violation of a Sylph's rights. While there is no defined method of doing so, another gift is exchanged. Again, it doesn't have to be expensive like those silly diamond rings humans seem so fond of. This gift is far more personal, and is to show that one truly understands the other. If the one who is proposed to accepts, they will return the gift with something equally as thoughtful. Sylphid Adjacio Ceremonies differ just as much as human weddings; they can have a large ceremony with a lavish celebration, or it can be very simple with only the necessary people. The necessary people are, of course, the settlement's resident Mage and the Primicerius. The Primicerius must be present to oversee and send a report to the Nuptias Bybliotheca, the section of government that keeps track of Adjacios; the Mage is present to unite the Sylphs {or Sylph and various other being that they choose} with a special bond, and restore fertility to the Sylph{s} involved. Oh! I should mention that Adjacios can be between any two beings, so long as one is a Sylph; they are specifically tailored to a Sylph's needs, and would be quite silly and redundant for any other creatures. Gender doesn't matter in an Adjacio.☁Reproduction☁Let's get this straight, I am not sharing the mechanics! They're the same as any other humanoid! If you're looking for that sort of thing, then too bad! The only reason a section for this is necessary is because there are a few things that are different than most other beings and their babies. Now let's get down to business.... Wait, what's that look for? I didn't mean it like that!
 I meant I need to explain.... Okay, so Sylphs are born sterile. It wasn't always like this, but a long time ago {by Sylph standards, of course, not human} there was a very naughty prince. This prince threw caution to the wind, and did whatever he pleased; he seduced many woman, and spit on the traditions of his people. One of these women became pregnant, and attempted to take advantage of the prince; she blackmailed his father, and threatened to reveal the terrible deeds of his son should she not receive everything she desired. The Basileus at the time, a very temperamental man who had entered his golden years, instead chose to disinherit his son and banish him to the far reaches. He was so enraged by this transgression, that he decided to ensure that it never happened again. The Basileus crafted a spell, one he flung far and wide that sterilized all Sylphs not already adjoined in an Adjacio. The stress was said to be so much that it killed him, but he it is also said that he died a happy man. The effects of this spell are still felt today, and in order for a Sylph to have children, they must receive a fertility spell from a Mage. It is strictly forbidden for a Mage to use a fertility spell outside an Adjacio ceremony, though the consequences are unknown as it has never happened. Newborn Sylphs are bigger and more developed than newborn humans; Sylph babies also develop much faster after birth, and are fully capable of walking, running and swimming by themselves by age 3. {Even though they can swim by themselves, it's not wise to leave them alone in the pool. Accidents still happen, you know.} Despite this, Sylphs aren't considered fully matured until at least their first century. The equivalent to human "teenagers" are those who have completed the necessary schooling and have yet to hit one hundred. ☁Education☁I know I compare Sylphs to humans a lot, but they are the predominant species are the planet. I know they aren't really as strong as we are, but they tend to run the show on the other side of the Veil. Near every species knows what a human is, so they just seem to be the best comparison. Oops, I went off topic again. Sorry! Where was I.... Education? Yes, okay! So, Sylphs do go to school. Sylphid schools tend to work like private schools in America work, except the system is funded through the royal treasury. {The treasury is fueled by donations of all sizes; Sylphs tend to be very talented in the arts, and give back to their people through donations to the royal treasury. The treasury covers expenses like paying government officials, teachers, Mages, and doctors.} There is an Academiae Regalis in each of the four hemispheres {North East, North West, South East, South West}. Wait since there's four, wouldn't they be quarterspheres? Is that even a word? Oh, who cares! You know what I'm saying, right? If you cut the world in half on the Prime Meridian, then cut each of those halves along the Equator you have four pieces. Each of those pieces has an Academiae Regalis. {There, now do you get it?} All Sylphs are required to attend the Acaemiae Regalis for at least twenty years; past that is kind of like attending college in America. Sylphs cover more in the Academiis Regiis than American schools, and are split up depending on their desired job field after their fifteenth year. Sylphs start at the closest Academiae Regalis at age 10; they are allowed to return home for one week every month, and classes cease during this period.That should stifle some of your curiosity for now. Once again, this has been Professor Rina on Sylphs. Next time, I think we'll cover another major part of Sylphid Culture; the Three Winds. So stay tuned!

☁Sylph 103☁With Professor RinaSo you really do want to learn about the Three Winds?

Huh.... well, alright. I'll tell you. But you better really pay attention. And no perverted thoughts this time!
The Three Winds ☁General☁I should probably say right now that the Winds do not define a person; belonging to a Wind doesn't mean that the things associated with that Wind apply to you. While a person's Wind affects all parts of their life, from their personality to the skills they excel at, it does not mean that they are only good at the things that everyone in the Wind is. Sylphs vary greatly, even among their respective Winds. A Wind is simply to help Sylphs find what they might be best at, and helps to indicate to those around them what they might be best at. Quite some time ago, the Winds were used to help assign jobs to keep communities running; but now that we as a species have grown, this is no longer necessary. The Winds tend to have extremes on both ends, and everything below is simply generalizations; it does not mean all Strong Winds have the patience of saints, or that all Swift Winds can run at blinding speeds. There are exceptions to every rule, but the Three Winds are still an important piece of Sylphid culture. At birth, the village Mage inspects the child carefully for any health problems they may have, while also searching for their Wind. Each Wind has a distinctive mark that all it's people have. It is said that people of the same Wind are far more compatible. ☁The Strong Wind☁We'll start with the most common Wind, the Strong Wind. Strong Winds tend to be the most patient of the Winds, but I've met a few short tempered ones in my day. Strong Winds generally enjoy asking questions, and learning new things. While all Sylphs are scholarly, these ones are the most so; it's unusual to find a Strong Wind in a physically demanding job with the exception of defense-oriented positions and Mages. When a Strong Wind is covering something, it is nearly impossible to get them to move; they have wicked defense abilities, and there's nothing harder than getting something that's being protected by a Strong Wind. Strong Wind marks can be anywhere on the body, but tend to show more on the chest and back; they tend to be various shades of brown, though occasionally a black mark is found. Their marks vary far more than the other two winds, and can be anything from a simple shield to an elaborate one. The occasional cross can be found, like on the Strong Winds in the royal family. Both the current Basileus and his heir, his first child the prince Ciarin, are Strong Winds. While the Basileus is impossible to face on any level, he is completely immovable should he wish to stay in one place. Likewise, the Crown Prince excels at defense; it is said that only the Basileus himself can move his son, though there are plenty of reported cases of his younger siblings getting the best of him through dirty tactics. ☁The Swift Wind☁I'm sure you've guessed this by now, but Swift Winds tend to be the fastest of all Sylphs. This isn't always true, as I've met a few Swift Winds I could outrun in my day, but they tend to be pretty quick. Swift Winds don't have a specific temperament, they tend to range far more than the other Winds, but I've never met a rude Swift. Even if they're often in a hurry, they do their best not to make others unhappy. Swift Winds are great for sending messages, and the Slyphid Postal Service {the Muneris Tabellae} is mostly made up of these Winds. Not only are they fast in the air, but they can run faster than any human; this isn't to say anything about their stamina, though, as this factor varies greatly. Swift Wind marks tend to be some sort of feather pattern on the legs or feet; small wings are very common, especially around the ankles. These wings can be any color, and look far more like tattoos than birth marks. A famous example of a Swift Wind is the second son of the current Basileus, my big brother Icarus! He's incredibly fast, and while he may always seem calm and polite, he can be quite cruel. Like this one time, he stole my favorite stuffed animal and decided to play keep away with i- Really, Rina? That was fifty years ago.Ix! Get out of here, this is my class.I was just stopping by to check your facts, but it looks like you are using this section to insult me. That is hardly ladylike, baby sister.Just get out! Go away!Fine. But I will be back.Sure you will.Anyway, Swift Winds can be extremely kind, or secretly deep and twisted like some people. They tend to be the fastest, but this is not always true. ☁The Fierce Wind☁Finally, we have the Fierce Wind. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this already, but we Sylphs are a fairly intellectual race. While we're strong and fast, we aren't that big on fighting. {Kind of like Shaolin Monks! Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure there are a few of us at the Shaolin Monastery.} Anyway, Sylphs born into the Fierce Wind are uncommon. Not as rare as Mages, of course, but rare enough that it's a bit of a surprise. {Actually, Fierce Winds are more likely to be Mages than the other Winds. They tend to hit extremes far more often than the others.} The mark of the Fierce Wind tends to be somewhere on the hands or arms; it can be very dark or very faint, but it's the same general color of any normal birth mark. The Fierce Wind marks are generally jagged bands around the arms or hands, and can look like well crafted tattoos or bad scars. Fierce Winds tend to be adept at fighting, even if we have little use for it; in the human world, they like to take jobs as professional fighters or wrestlers. Fierce Winds tend to have a shorter temper, and prefer to learn by doing. While there are plenty of scholars in this Wind, a great many prefer more physical jobs; a strong Fierce Wind can be hired to make sure humans don't accidentally wander into a settlement, and to forcefully help keep the peace under a Primicerius. Fierce Winds are strong candidates for Vicarius positions, as occasionally there can be physical unrest in communities. Fierce Winds go all out no matter what they're doing, and it's wise not to get between them and a goal. A famous example of a Fierce Wind is me, Rina Windstorm! So I'm not exactly famous, but I'm well known. I used to travel from settlement to settlement on the Basileus's business before I stopped here at Reed's. I'll be getting back to work doing that when I'm done here, but for now I'm 'evaluating' this facility before the Basileus decides that it's just as suitable as an Academiae Regalis for a Sylph's primary education. I think that's it for the Three Winds. If I missed something, just shoot me a message. Next time, it looks like we're doing an in depth look at.... the royal family? Uh, no, I can't do that. So much homework calling my name! You know how it is. I better get to work, even though there's no way I'll ever finish in time for the next class. Come back much later, and I'll cover something more interesting!

εїз Sylph 201 εїз With Professor Icarus
Today we're going to take an in depth look at the structure of the royal family. It seems that it was only mentioned briefly, and instead the Government section focused on local governments. The Royal Family is a large part of the Sylphid Culture, and no education can be complete without knowledge of them. So, let's begin.
The Royal Family
εїз The Basileus εїз
The Basileus is the head of the entire Sylphid race. What he says goes, and very few people are in position to even disagree with him. However, the Basileus is chosen among his siblings as the most levelheaded and fair. While he has many people to help handle all aspects of government, it is the Basileus who approves or vetoes everything proposed. Usually, he or she is content to sit back and allow the government to be run by the elected officials; it is only when something he strongly approves of or is against that he speaks up. The Basileus has become more of a figurehead in the last hundred years or so, but he/she still maintains their absolute power. The previous Basileus, my grandmother Melrose, was the one who paved the way for elected officials; she refused to place her corrupt older brother in an office of power, and instead demanded a poll be had by the people in Urbem Ventum. Surprisingly enough, a merchant well known for his fairness and generosity was elected into the Office of Commerce. The Basileus proved that the Sylphid people were capable of thinking for themselves, and that they knew what would and would not work. The Baslieus has had to forcibly remove other Sylphs from power on occasion, but has retained the support of the people since then.
εїз Legatarius εїз
The Legatarius is the name given to the future Basileus; basically, they are the ruler's heir. Like the Basileus, the Legatarius can be male or female. The Legatarius is chosen for being fair and levelheaded among their siblings. It is generally assumed that the Legatarius is the oldest child, but this is not always true; while the current Legatarius is indeed the Basileus's oldest child, the previous Basileus was the youngest of five. While it is true that the oldest child is usually referred to as the Legatarius, this is only until the Basileus officially announces to name of his/her heir. While all royal children are trained from birth in the duties of the Basileus, the Legatarius is trained additionally so. Growing up, my father refused to announce his heir publicly; he only stated that it would be one of his two sons, which freed his only daughter at the time to do as she pleased. Legatarius training includes a general education with a focus on business and politics, diplomacy and sensitivity training, dancing, and Mage training.
εїз Kings and Queens εїз
When the Basileus inevitably marries, their spouse is referred to as a King or a Queen depending on their gender. While the King or Queen {I shall refer to them as 'the spouse' from here on} has some political power, their's does not exceed even the Legatarius. Once their children reach a certain age, even they are higher on the political food chain; the royal family draws on blood line, and the spouse is not required to have any royal blood whatsoever. Should they have royal blood, it becomes slightly redundant as their power as the spouse is higher than any title they may have. {Marriage between siblings is forbidden, as is cousins.} The spouse is far more a figurehead than the Basileus, and tends to have some sort of hobby to show for their time and resources; a lazy spouse is generally frowned upon. The previous spouse, my mother Tyria, was a musician. She spent the majority of her time around music; learning new instruments, teaching my siblings and I how to play, and playing with the orchestra in Urbem Ventum. Queen Tyria often traveled to the Academiis Regiis to ensure that young Sylphs were receiving a proper education on the arts. The current spouse, my stepmother Mariska, is an artist. She specializes in oil paints, and her paintings are highly valued among the people.
εїз Princes and Princesses εїз
Princes and Princesses {here on referred to as 'the children'} are, of course, the Basileus's children who are not chosen as his heir. The Legatarius is simply a formality, and often times he/she will be referred to simply as the Prince/Princess. Princes and Princesses also receive and extensive education well past what is required for normal Sylph children, but this is mostly so that they do not shame the family. They are generally allowed to pursue their own interests, with the exception of the Haeres Secundus, who is basically a back up for the heir. While they have slightly restricted freedom, this is only until the Legatarius ascends the throne. While Princes and Princesses have power, they are also expected to carry their own weight once they hit the appropriate age. Princes and Princesses generally take up office in government, as they are so extensively educated in the workings of it; this is, of course, so long as they are elected. The current child of age, who is neither the Legatarius nor the Haeres Secundus, is the Princess Rizalynn. This is, of course, my darling little sister. Rina has been working as a traveling diplomat on behalf of the Basileus; she carries a copy of his seal ring, which means she may speak in the Basileus's name. She has worked to settle disputes between settlements, and has become well loved by the people during her time.

Past the children of Princes and Princesses, there are no other titles. Children of Princes and Princesses are referred to as Posteri; while they have no real power, they are generally well respected for their blood. While this may give them extra respect from extreme loyalists, they have no automatic power; Posteri are popular candidates for government, as Sylphid parents tend to pass down their knowledge to their children from a young age.
So let's do a quick review. Here is the Sylphid structure of government in descending order, with the most powerful at the top:
Basileus Legatarius Princes and Princess {of age} High Central Government Officials King or Queen Lower Central Government Officials Primicerius Princes and Princesses {who are still children} Vicarius Normal Sylphs {including Posteri}
I do hope this has answered any questions you may have had. Rina was too busy doing "homework" this evening to be with us, so thank you for your patience with me. I am sure she will be back again next time. This has been Professor Icarus on Sylphs. I hope to see you again soon.
