It was quiet beneath the trees of the forest, despite it being around mid-afternoon. The sun shone though only the smallest spaces through the canopies overhead, dappling the forest floor with light. Many forest-dwellers enjoyed the prevailing shade - those that used it to hunt, and those that used it to hide. Some just used the dark to get a good nap in without the bothersome brightness of the day. Others who were in as dark a mood as the shadows decided to sulk among the foliage instead.

A young adult of a centaur rested his back against a thick oak, his long legs folded to the side as he leaned sideways. His tail curled about his hind hooves, flicking every so often to shoo away a few woodland insects with a perturbed air. The male's arms were crossed over his chest, face hidden in shadow, expression brooding.

He wanted to get stronger.
He really did.

He had thought that strength came with bravery and bravery came with age, but here he was, practically an adult, and he didn't feel any more courageous than he had as a foal.

What a fool, he thought. Growing up to fear everything that surrounds me. He wanted to be a hero. Do good deeds. Protect others. Stand up for them as a friend and warrior; someone to be admired. But how could Lyco do that when he couldn't even stand up for himself?

Having distanced himself for so long from other taur, the young adult wasn't really sure what they thought of him anymore. He wasn't even sure if any remembered him at all. It had been so long...and yet maybe that was for the best. He couldn't bear to face old friends with no change to himself.

Mirala sighed. She had taken it upon herself to help Deliev become less socially awkward, as she knew it worried Evisule that her son had no one to hang out with (other than family - and Tula, but since Del never talked about his outings no one knew that he had seen her several times, albeit accidentally). All he wanted to do, however, was draw. 'Spring landscapes are so beautiful,' he said. 'I'll draw you too, Mira, you look so pretty in this lighting,' he said.

And of course, when he put it that way, with that eager little smile of his, how could she resist? He was much too cute, it was a wonder he hadn't gotten a female following yet. It was probably because he was so quiet, though... well, around non-family. Obviously he knew just the right words to say to get Mira to follow him from field to field, purposefully avoiding populated places, even though her goal had been to get him to interact with other taur. Oh well... they still had time. Maybe after this next drawing.

Deliev settled down in a spot with a good view of the area, watching Mirala move a short distance, plop on the ground, lay on her back, and let her limbs sprawl out. She certainly knew how to make herself comfortable. Ah, her hair looked great like that. "Don't move!" he called, frantically sketching. As he glanced up for the twentieth time, he noticed some bright blue among the dusky shadows and froze. He'd thought no one else was here!

As Deliev was sketching and focusing his attention on both Mirala and the new bit of bright blue he'd noticed, a second, curious centaurette came upon the scene. Although her hooves and body were not as slender or delicate as a cervitaur's, she moved with the practiced caution of a skilled hunted, picking her way through the foliage and underbrush almost without a sound. Her small size for her age helped as well, and soon she had emerged from her leafy hideout to crouch just over Deliev's shoulder.

"Wow," the feminine voice breathed by his ear. Fiery locks of hair cascaded down pale shoulders, littered with leaves and twigs. "That's a really good drawing. Did you just do that? Just now?"

Tucking away her curtain of hair behind swerving ear, the archer smiled and spoke in hushed tones so as not to disturb the atmosphere of the scene. "Mirala, you look great!" she whispered loudly, cupping a hand to her mouth. "This one's a real artist! He's captured you perfectly!" Her excitement and awe could not be contained in such a tone, however, and her volume spilled out to reach the sensitive ears of the male in the shadows just beyond.

He sat up, alert. "Oh, no."

In seconds, he was on his hooves, listening, waiting, and crouching in the bushes, ready to make a run for it the first chance he got. Evidently he had unwanted company, and though they hadn't seemed to notice him yet, he didn't want to stick around until they did. Well...at least I'm good for something, he thought bitterly. Running.

Mikaila played her syrinx with gusto while she danced through trees. As she side nimbly side stepped a root, she looked over her shoulder to make sure her partner was still with her, and was overjoyed when she heard the youth's tambourine. Reighn had been too busy to watch over her adoptive daughter for the day, and since Mikaila's grandchildren were off, she decided to take the girl along with her. After all, who better to play with than a satyr?

Sunshine was tempted to belt out into song when she noticed a variety of color up ahead. She looked forward to see if Mikaila had noticed, but as usual, the petite cervi was too lost in her own world to pay any mind. So, instead of stopping immediately, she jogged up ahead to catch up, then shimmied back to the group, making sure she kept Mikaila's attention.

The striped cervi stopped cold. "Why...are you walking like that? You look like a turtle thats been flipped onto it's back."

"I saw colors," Sunshine pointed back to the grouping. "Over there! Can we go? Please, please can we go?"

"...What if there are others, and their not very friendly?"

"Then we'll run, so come on!" She snatched Mikaila's free hand, and practically drug the cervi behind her. "Have a little faith."

As Lycoris was getting up, waiting among the dense foliage of the woods, he turned his head and attention away from the taur he was avoiding, only to come face to face with another. He almost yelled in panic.

"Shhh!" the cervi urged, clasping a hand to the centaur's open mouth. "It's okay, Uncle Lyco. It's just me," she whispered with a playful smile.

"Iryl," Lyco breathed once she had released him. "Just as silent and stealthy as ever. I don't know how the hell you got here, but I'm sure glad to see you." Glancing back at the others frightenedly, he took Iryl's hand. "Come on. Let's get out of here."

"But Uncle Lyco!" Iryl giggled quietly. "It's not as if you don't know them. And Leila's no where around. Why don't you just say hello?"

"Exactly because they don't know me," Lyco replied grumpily. "If they see me, they'll never let me leave. Girls love talking. You know that."

Iryl gave him an indignant smirk as she crouched beside Lyco, placing her hands on her hips.

"No - not you! That's not what I meant!" He cried, clutching at his head. "You're not like them. Not -"

"Girly?" Iryl replied teasingly. "Uncle Lyco, you wound me. But it's okay, I forgive you," she added quickly before he could open his mouth in apology. "Okay, if you really want to leave, we can go. But you can't run from them forever, you know," she replied, leading him forward through the foliage she had come through.

"Wanna bet...?" he muttered, glancing back over his shoulder anxiously.

Deliev jumped away from the voice next to him in surprise, and when he looked up again the blue was gone. Well, that was something, but it didn't make much of a difference because now they had company. Mirala quickly sat up at the voice, but he had gotten the basics he wanted to in his sketch so he just moved away from the new arrival a few inches.

"Wasibru?!" Mirala exclaimed, standing. "It is you! I haven't seen you in so long!" She gave the other centauress a quick embrace. "Oh, this is Deliev - one of Evisule's kids! We're supposed to be out mingling and making friends, but, well, you see how that's worked out." She grinned. "How have you been?"

Deliev watched the conversation with little interest, giving a slight nod in greeting when he was mentioned, but now that he had gotten over his initial surprise he found this new visitor to be quite visually interesting. His hand was poised to start drawing the two chatting when he caught some sounds of others coming their way, his ears swiveling in their direction. Oh no, more? He clutched his sketchbook close to his chest, not wanting anyone else to see his art. Other than his close family, Tula had been one of the few he had shown his drawings to, and now Mirala's friend here. They weren't something he really wanted to share, even though Mira always encouraged him to.

Giggling at Deliev's surprise, Wasibru smiled and gave a little apologetic wave. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," she told him. "I just didn't want you to stop what you were doing! Maybe I should have just kept quiet until you were done...oh!"

As the cervi moved away, Mirala came up to take his place, hugging Wasibru. The archer laughed and hugged the yellow and purple centaurette back. "I know! It's been forever! What luck I happened to find you here!" As they pulled away, she regarded Mirala before following her gesture to the cervi. "Evisule? Really?!" Her grass-green eyes widened. "Gosh, everyone's getting so big! I've been great, how about you? I've just missed a lot, looks like."

She was kind of curious about if Mirala had obtained any kids of her own since they'd last met, but with Deliev around, that seemed like it might have turned out to be something of an awkward subject. She smiled politely and bowed with her forelegs to the young male taur. "A pleasure to meet you, young Deliev."

At the explanation about what they were doing in the forest together, the orange-haired centaur girl beamed. "Mingling and making friends, huh? Best hobby ever! Can I help?" she asked, absently picking a twig out of her hair as she ran a hand through it. "It seems like I've got a lot of taur to catch up with as it is - both old and new. Hey, listen! Here comes some more now!" Walking up to Deliev's side - whether for support and encouragement or to prevent him from running away, it was unclear - Wasibru took his arm playfully. "Why don't you smile and say hello?"
