OPEN FOR CRITIQUES!

Name: AHIMNOX -her name is always uppercase. These are her favorite letters in alphabetical order. Sturdy, reasonable letters. No frivolous bits, sticking out everywhere and curving for no reason. Only the O may curve, because it stands for perfection itself. Not like the wicked Q with it's messy error of a marking. Each could be constructed in physical form with no worries for safety. F and P are so frightening!
Nickname(s): Nox
Age (Appearance Wise): 30s
Age (Actual): 60
Personality: Obsessive, compulsive, desperate for approval. Too much attention unnerves her, but going unnoticed is depressing. She is very passive aggressive and many people who have worked with her for years don't fully know her true feelings for them. To keep the peace she is willing to be cordial to even the dirtiest scoundrel. The few who manage to worm into her comfort zone fast realize how opinionated and determined she is. She is punctual and loyal. Always willing to lend anyone a hand, on the off chance the good deed will benifit in the future.
Her days usually follow a set schedual. A small breakfast. She starts with working in her bookstore. She then spends a couple of hours doing home deliveries and aquisitions. After that she goes to the upper level for a luxurious lunch followed by library time. Reading, taking notes, admiring. Every few days she searches the shops for a new bookmark that she may add to her collection. She visits one or two people who have invited her for some short social time. Then she heads home before the evening gets too late for a small dinner. Reading. And bed.
Thoughts on the Forest: The forest is a calming thought for her. Somewhere free of responsibility, where everything is as it should be. She doesn't see how contradictory this is, but as her maker I see it as a secret longing to break her OCD habits and just be happy. Fit in with everyone around her without the need to be perfect.
Thoughts of Book Children: Recipies for disaster. Their curiosity may be seen as charming to others, but it normally just leads to disorder and chaos. Subconsciously she resents their beautiful coloring as a metaphor for personal expression, something she herself fails at. She is jealous that they've seen the forest.
Thoughts on City People: She wonders at their purpose in the world. She spends hours at 'night' thinking about the world of forest surrounding the city and the black forms that populate it. Why just the one city? Why can it not grow outward? Why won't the forest guardians interact? It all seems almost pointless. Maybe this is why she clings to what order she can manage.
Physical Appearance: AHIMNOX dresses very feminine. Conservativeish with a bit of flair. Ruffles on her top. A-line knee-length skirt (also known as a circle skirt. a full, 50s style silhouette). sample reference another She looks mostly humanoid, with deer feet and ears. (i don't think any city people have this yet, do they?) ((the image 'ears' links to is not mine, just something i found on google and thought was a good ear positioning. they aren't that big. ignore rest of image.))

History: Her first memory is a tower of books. She formed facing a wall of spines, all arranged by size and color. It was beautiful. It was this that developed into her OCD over organization. She understood the arrangement to be beautiful, but missed the point that part of the beauty was in the new and mysterious. She came to learn she had formed in Fin Magna. It was beautiful indeed. Unfortunately in her initial wanderings she got lost in the maze of walkways and ended up at a bookstore in Strathness before she was able to gain the courage to talk to someone. She was hired by the kind owner Haxton and allowed to stay in his place while she got started in the world. Over the years his charisma with the customers and her ability to know exactly where each book they stocked was on the shelves have made Haxton's Hardbacks one of the best little bookstores in the middle levels. Nox has her own little one bedroom apartment nearby. More prestigious clientel have started stopping by to fill holes in their libraries lately. She has managed to gather occasional invitations this way back into a few homes and libraries in the upper levels. She WILL find her birth-tower again...
As far as relationships go, she's never had a romantic one. Haxton was like a father to her. Anyone else who may have formed feelings for her eventually tired of trying to live up to her standards and moved on. Most of the time with her not fully realizing they were even interested! She isn't heartless, she is just so consumed with her own thoughts and desires that she doesn't always consider those around her. When she thinks of love, the idea pleases and confuses her. If she thinks too much about it she starts making mistakes, though. She tries not to.
Hobbies: Making and collecting bookmarks. All materials, all shapes, all sizes. She hangs them on her walls at home so she can look at them without touching, to fully appreciate any color they may have.
Birthday: early autumn
Favorite Things: Tea. The smell of leather. The sound of pages brushing together. The rare sights of the guardians out in the forest. Compliments on jobs well done. Bookmarks!
Hated Things: Mold. Damp. (basically things that ruin books) Being interrupted. Disorganization. The Unknown. People who read books with sticky fingers!

ON FONTS: from this site

Serif or Roman Style
A serif is a short horizontal line found at the top or bottom of various letters. Serif fonts are very easy for the eye to read because they are open, wide and round. The pointed serifs make a pleasing contrast between the heavy and light strokes. They suggest dignity, stability, and integrity. There are four main classifications of Serif Fonts. They are Oldstyle Roman, Modern Roman, Transitional Roman, and Square Roman also known as Egyption.

Square Serif or Egyptian
These fonts are also known as Slab Serif typefaces. They were originally developed in the 19th century for use as display faces. A contemporary type style with square or blocked serifs and more or less uniform strokes. The face is even in texture and weight with very little contrast. They are basically a sans serif design with slab serifs added.

RELATING FONT TO PERSONALITY
Because City People speak through visible text, font selection is extra important. Just as listening to a fellow human talk will give you hints about the speaker, my font selection has extra information about Nox. As a Square Serif font she displays her love for order and clarity while still displaying a bit of personality. I like the slightly crooked nature of some of the lines because it shows she isn't perfect, and she has the potential to relax on rare occasions.

Favorite Story:
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. secretly it's the 12 Dancing Princesses. To find a passage to another world would be magical. To go through the big forest and find jewels on trees, a prince for every princess, and dancing all night long. It would be so much more than her mundane reality. In a magical world like that, she wouldn't care about orginization so much. If she was one of those princesses she would be loved and adored and have anything her heart desired. I think subconsciously this story also reassures and reaffirms her love of the forest. It isn't a place of death and horror, but of beauty and acceptance. People move on from the chaos of the city into something better.
If anyone asks, though, it's the Ant and the Grasshopper. Dilligence is rewarded.
Job: Second-in-charge of one of the better book stores in Strathness. The owner is Haxton, from whom Haxton Hardbacks originates.
Class: Currently upper-middle, but firmly believes since she formed in Fin Magna that she belongs there, and is working towards a promotion to put her back where she belongs.
Fears: Fading. That she's really insignificant. That she will never find her prince. That she will never relax enough to dance. That the forest is actually cold and empty.

For one!

The Forest is the unknown, something large and secret that looms before Nox. It's the place where the Book Children, objects of jealousy and strangeness for her, are derived.

So why does she find it to be a comfortable place?

Also, in her sixty years, has she had any relationships aside from her employer? Friends? Maybe a lover or two?

What about the mental characteristics that are required? Why not break them down? We know she's ambitious and well-ordered, that she fears the unknown.

So go in-depth with them! I'd love to hear more information. How it impacts her daily life. How does she handle being middle class when she wants to be in the upper crust? Things of that sort.

Nox sounds very interesting! Now I wanna see her sparkle with polish!

Thankyou so much for such interesting questions! It really helped me flesh out the character in my mind. smile

1) She doesn't see how contradictory this is, but as her maker I see it as a secret longing to break her OCD habits and just be happy. Fit in with everyone around her without the need to be perfect.

2) As far as relationships go, she's never had a romantic one.
She has had a few close friends, but i didn't want to detail any of them because i want to leave her room to meet my fellow RPers!

3) Her days usually follow a set schedual. Reading. And bed.

4) She doesn't mention being middle class if she can help it. She spends a lot of her free time in the upper level trying to make aquaintances that will help her get back where she belongs. Luckily Haxton, her boss and father figure, is well liked among those who know of him, so those people are willing to give her a chance. She is indifferent to fellow middle class people, and tries to avoid anyone lower class, lest something of it rubs off on her and the upper class friends she has cast her off for association. She doesn't realize she does it. She is not consciously classist, and if called on it she becomes deeply embarrased and ashamed. Haxton doesn't like this in her, and tries to get her to see the good in everyone.

Revision Needed: Detailed

Overall she has a lot of character contradictions going on. Desperate for approval yet not wanting to gather too much attention. Passive aggressive but people who have known her for years have never picked up on it? She doesn't want attention yet is actually very opinionated and determined? Always willing to lend a hand yet again, passive aggressive? You then reason she does this only because it has the possibility to be self serving? While being desperate for approval would typically wouldn't be self serving or passive aggressive.
Her typical day is not needed in her personality. It doesn't reflect her personality. Unless it shows or tells me about her, this information is better left in another section. In it, why does she buy from other bookstores if she works in one? how can she afford to go EACH DAY to the upper levels for a luxurious lunch? She only works in the morning too?

Thoughts:
"She doesn't see how contradictory this is, but as her maker I see it as a secret longing to break her OCD habits and just be happy." I am not you and so, I can't see her that same way. Reason it out or explain it. Why is it calming? Does the character have a reason for it. Do they know it or can they not explain it? If you have a reason for a character's thoughts or feeling give them! Remember in a profile you are giving people a character that they no NOTHING about.

History: I'm confused at a few parts here. Her OCD comes from forming near a tower of books stacked by color and size. Yet, she placed such a high stock in letters and fonts. Why is this? You continue on to make it sound like she is shy, yet in her profile, she fears going unnoticed. Avoid saying 'The Best' one of the best, or, one of the better, saying the BEST is seen as power playing. Making something definitive and effectively powerplays others. Most of the libraries of the upper levels wouldn't have that many holes I imagine, so why or how does the store obtain books those people are looking for? Keep in mind, the libraries are open, it's people that bookstores tend to sell to, not the actual libraries.
Her romatic blurg looks like it has more quirks of her personality that were unmentioned, (having a high standard? Having desires? Desires of and for what?)

her fear of never finding a prince comes from where? Is she a romantic? This just again, seems to contradict what else is in her profile. Same with dancing? Just..seems thrown in last second.

Overall, develop her a little more. Try maybe putting each trait into 'cells' rather than a paragraph to better define them.
