Is it because of their nails? I get so confused over cats...

Trim their nails.

Sharpen claws and it's also a way of scent marking...

It's also because their nails shed similar to like a snakes skin, so they have to slough off the dead nails.... >.> Sorry, been around domestic cats my whole life, and love the big cats of the wild...

To let you know that everything in your place is their's. I have a scratched up sofa and couch to prove it. Even though they have access to these large scratching posts...

The side of my stairs are ripped up because my cat likes to lay down sideways and scratch them. I guess the huge scratching post next to the stairs isn't obvious enough. >:/

It's the fact that you would be so haughty as to suggest that it use a scratching post. You must be punished for your insolence.

my kitty just uses the morbidly obese, deaf, 12 year old cat in the house as a scratching post

yep, correct, it's usually either for territory marking and/or to remove the shed layers of their claws.

it's also like a form of exercise, it feels good and is a way to stretch and work the muscles in their legs. It's probably one of the reasons a lot of cats will scratch on the nearest attractive surface when feeling playful and frisky.
