A Chance to Change
“Well, maybe if you weren’t so damn selfish you could keep someone around!” Basil Amherst slumped onto his couch, a beer in one hand and the other deep in a bag of Doritos. His messy, mid long black hair was tied in a pony tail; his bangs fell over his eyes and glasses. His dull, gray eyes glared at the TV, almost bitterly. He pulled his hand out of the bag and wiped the red orange cheesy residue onto his warn out blue jeans. This would be his Saturday night from now on: grab a beer, grab a snack, watch a marathon of sitcoms and wallow in his newfound loneliness. He didn’t think getting dumped would be this hard on him! It didn’t really sink in on Monday. They had a fight, she left, Basil called one of his friends, and it was done. Plain and simple. No big deal! They were only together for…oh, two years. She was always so good to him, and to put up with him for THAT long… Oh wow. Basil had some thinking to do. He thought about what she said, “…if you weren’t so damn selfish.” Was he really…selfish? He was a good boyfriend! …right? Every night she wanted to go out and do something! What did he look like, a bank? He didn’t have the money to take her everywhere every night! Even when she suggested going somewhere to talk like the café or the park that still meant spending money; if they went to the café, she’d eventually want a coffee or a treat, or if they went to the park he’d still need to pay for gas! But…they never went out, not once. Basil never drove her to his apartment; she always walked. He never made dinner for her—they just kind of sat and watched TV, and talked. Ah, see, they talked! Talking is good for a relationship; they shared common interests! So they talked—what was the big issue here? He was a good boyfriend! He wasn’t selfish! He loved her! If you have feelings for someone else you love them! And he cared for her…kinda. If she was ever sick, he didn’t want them to see each other because HE didn’t want to get sick. Well, that’s normal, right? Why didn’t SHE care about HIS health when she wanted to come over while she was sick?! Why did it take five days and a 16oz can of Bud light for Basil to realize how much of a p***k he was? He needed to talk to the guys. --*-- After a quick call to his two best friends, Laixi and Brice, Basil headed out the door to meet them at the trio’s favorite bar. “You sounded kinda urgent on the phone.” Brice said in his deep, rough voice. “Yeah…did you and Alanna get in another fight?” asked Laixi, munching on a peanut. “No, I guess I’m alright…Alanna and I haven’t talked since Monday.” Basil ran his fingers through his greasy hair. “I just had a question to ask you guys.” “Well, the answer is no. If Alanna wants to take you back then you just say you’re through!” stated Laixi with confidence, pounding the table with his pale hand for emphasis. “That’s not what I wanted to ask. When Alanna dumped me, she said, ‘Well, maybe if you weren’t so damn selfish you could keep someone around.’ Am I really selfish?” Laixi and Brice were silent. They looked to each other, then to Basil, then back to each other. “Uh, guys?” “Well…” Brice began. “The thing is…” followed Laixi, scratching his head, ruffling his white, green tipped hair. “Yeah, you’re kind of a selfish p***k.” “Mhm.” “And greedy.” “You’re sometimes a bum, too.” “I kinda wonder why we still hang out with you.” “…and you guys didn’t tell me this before because…?” Basil asked, condescendingly. “Don’t get me wrong,” Laixi laughed, “it’s not like you’re mean to us or anything—you don’t mock us or hate us or say things about us. We’re all friends. You do, however, put yourself before everyone else and bum money off us and NOT PAY US BACK.” “I’ve paid you ba—“ “Two-hundred and six bucks you still owe me.” Laixi snapped back to him. “You know, Alanna must’ve had a heart of gold to stick with you for two years.” Sighed Brice. “I didn’t realize I was this much of a d**k.” “Come on now! You’re still a nice guy.” Laixi patted him on the back and smiled. “Still, I’ve got to change if I want any chance of her taking me back.” Brice lit a cigarette, savoring the smoke for a while, and then exhaling it out his nose. Laixi munched on another handful of peanuts, this time with the shell still on. Basil played with his coaster, feeling defeated. The bar was just as it always was: not busy, but not empty; just how the three boys liked it. It smelled of hops and grilled chicken with a pleasant hint of wood and charcoal on the grill. Basil looked around at the odd array of characters he always saw at this time of night at the bar; the nagas, demons, fairies and such. A waitress came by their table and smiled. “Alright, I’ve been meaning to ask you three this for a LONG time.” The three looked puzzled. “My boss said you guys were regulars here.” “Oh, Ron considers us regulars, does he?” Brice laughed, smoke trailing from his lips. “We must’ve put both his kids through college in tips alone.” Laixi agreed. “What did you need to ask us, um…did you say your name?” Basil asked. “No, I didn’t. My name’s Beth; I’ve just been working here for about three weeks. I was just wondering…what ARE you guys?” “…pardon?” “What are you guys? We get a lot of crazy characters here and I can usually tell what they are… but some of you guys here…I just have no idea. You see that old man, over there?” She pointed to an elderly gentleman sitting at the bar in a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches. “Do you notice anything weird about him?” Laixi and Basil looked at him and thought for a while. “One kick a** cane?” said Laixi, noting his silver handled cane. “See, you can’t see anything unusual about him!” “He’s a vampire.” Huffed Brice. “…how did you know? Do you know him?” “I just know,” he growled with disapproval. “S-sorry.” Beth stuttered. “Anyway, I didn’t know that he was a vampire until he ordered veal. I asked him how he wanted it, and he said he didn’t want a steak. Thank god Ron overheard us talking; he stopped me before I said anything stupid, then gave him a tot of fresh blood.” “You learn something new every day, don’t you?” smiled Basil. “So spill it!” What are you guys? Or do I have to guess?” Beth huffed. “I’m human.” Said Basil. “Heh…it’s kind of hard to explain what I am.” Laughed Laixi. “I come from a long line of shape shifters. When our people first came to be, they lived under the Dragon God’s rule so…I guess I’m some sorta dragon shape shifting human thing. Whatever you want to call it.” “Oh!” Beth exclaimed, clapping her hands together. “Like Jacob’s tribe from Twilight!” “Laixi had a pained look on his face. “No. Not like Twilight.” “See, Jacob’s a werewolf, but really he’s a shape shifter and-“ “Nooo. Not like Twilight.” “Okay. Fine. What about you?” She pointed to Brice. “Werewolf.” He put out his cigarette, his eyes not leaving the table, knowing what Beth would say. “…like Jacob from-“ “No.” The boys ordered their food and drinks (philly cheesesteak and “lava liquor” for Laixi, raw steak and bourbon for Brice, and a grilled chicken sandwich for Basil). The three enjoyed their Saturday, laughing the night away. When it was about one in the morning, Basil stood up and said his goodbye’s, then left…right before the check came, of course. Laixi picked up the check and examined it. “It’s two-hundred and thirteen dollars, now.” Laixi sighed and munched on another handful of peanuts. “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” “Hm. Maybe if I started charging him interest, he’d learn.” Basil came to his apartment, threw his keys on the floor, and fell face down onto his couch. Rapid thoughts and images danced through his head until finally he fell asleep. He reluctantly rose from his bed after a long nights sleep and rubbed his groggy eyes. He scrambled around for his glasses, did his morning routine (brush teeth, comb hair, wash face, yadda yadda). He then checked his mail. Nothing but bills and junk mail (and a ThinkGeek magazine), just like always. So he threw away everything but the bills and magazine. Three days passed, and Basil went through that same old routine; east, sleep, look for a job, hang out with Laixi and Brice, and check his mail. On the fourth day Basil left his apartment for the day to go on his daily job hunt. He came back to his apartment and noticed a fancy looking red corvette parked at a meter. At building’s front at a man with pointed ears. He wore a white baseball cap, a white polo shirt, white khakis, and white sneakers. His fake-tan orange skin shimmered in the sunlight. Holding his hand was a little girl with red hair tied into pig tails, wearing a purple and white dress with white stockings. She rubbed her pink, hazy eyes sleepily and stretched out her golden wings. Basil was about to enter the building, but he stopped; he might as well help the guy out. “Excuse me?” he asked the stranger dressed in white. “Do you need something?” “Yeah, I’m looking for Basil Amherst. Do you know if he lives in this building ‘cause…everyone I’ve asked has no idea.” Said the man, standing up. Surprised, Basil answered, “Oh. That’s me.” “Hi.” Said the little girl, looking at the ground. “Oh…hi there.” “Great! I thought I was going to have to wait here all day.” The man proceeded to pull an envelope from his pocket. “We’ve sent you like, 3 or so letters. You didn’t report to the Labs, so—“ “Wait, Labs? What?” “Labs, yes. Anyway, here’s a brochure for now!” He handed Basil a small, tri-fold brochure. “Come by the Labs for more information and have a great day!” He took the little girl’s hand and placed it into Basil’s open hand. “Wait just a minute; why are you leaving your little girl with me?” “Oh she’s not mine. She’s your daughter now. You’ve been chosen to adopt her.” The man stepped into a red corvette and left. “…WHAT?!”

Basil's Log 10:34 PM
So where to begin...I've never really written anything like this. It's...odd. A lot of stuff has happened lately; I shouldn't be that shocked, really, considering my best friend can shape shift into a dragon and my other best friend is a werewolf.
Anyway, a lot of stuff has happened lately. My girl dumped me because she said I was selfish. Dangerously so. I thought she was just bein' a b***h but then I talked to said two best friends; turns out I am. Go figure.
So, I come back to my apartment buidling from job hunting, and there's some guy waiting for me with a toddler in his hand. She's ADORABLE! She's got pretty gold wings and this dark red hair and--
I'm getting sidetracked. Sorry. Right, so, the guy asks if I know a Basil Amherst. When I tell him who I am, he says the adorable little girl is now my child. Before I have any time to ask him anything else, he gives me a pamphlet on the Labs and drives off. Of course, I panic and run up to my apartment room...without the little girl.
I call Laixi (the one that can transform into a dragon) and try to explain everything. He says he'll come on over, and he does, bringing the little girl with him. Then he yells my a** up and down for abandoning my child on the steps of my apartment (which he had EVERY right to).
He promptly takes the pamphlet from me and starts studying it while I get the little toddler some milk and try to entertain her. Once he's done, he says that the little toddler girl is a spawn of the sin sloth and the virtue kindness and that she is blind, but can see things called aura's. From what he could figure, the Labs thought that I needed to be taught some sort of lesson of kindness by taking care of non other than I kindness spawn. Makes sense to me... I think.
And thank God Laixi's been here for me. If it weren't for him, the poor thing would've probably ended up on the street. He stays over sometimes, takes care of her while I'm looking for a job and what not. He's bought her plenty of stuff, too (his family is LOADED because they own a chain of banks in the city). He even named her for me. He named her after his own grandmother, Chusi.
So I guess that's the end of my log. I'm gonna go put Chusi to bed; she's had a pretty tiring day with Laixi. Hopefully I can find a job and a baby sitter and Laixi n' I can spend as much time as we can with this little angel. Until next time.

Laixi's Super Fun ABC Game!
Chusi, Basil, and Laixi sat on the carpet, Chusi grinning brightly. Brice sat in a recliner not too far off, enjoying a cigar and the latest "Car" magazine.
"Is this really how you and your sister taught Yvanna the alphabet?" Basil asked, skeptical of his teaching methods.
"Of course! It worked didn't it? And it's working with Chusi, idn't that right, Si Si?"
Chusi giggled and clapped her hands together. "YAY! Lettews!"
"Yay!" Laixi cheered. "See? Everybody likes my super fun ABC game!"
"Yeah." Brice snorted, turning the page.
"Well, Chusi does. Come on, lets do it again, Si Si!"
"Okay!"
Basil smiled and pulled Chusi onto his lap. " 'kay now, what do we start with, Chewy?"
"A! A is fow apple!"
"Good, Chewy! Now what's next?"
"I can do it faster!"
"Oh, well, okay; if you want to!"
Chusi sped up, making the game more sing-songy: "B is for bouncy! C is for CHUSI!" she bounced high on Basil's lap, "D is for daddy!!! E is for elephlant! F is for fwoggy! G is for gwape! H is for horsey! I is for ICE CREAM, YAY! J is for juice! K is for kangaroo! L is for Laixi!!! M is for...um..."
"You can use Mom, kid." Brice said, looking up from his magazine.
"Mom? Wassat?"
"Oh..." Basil began, "Well...a mom is who your dad loves, I guess..."
"Oh!!! Li li!"
"Hey!" Laixi exclaimed, turning bright red.
Basil and Brice laughed. "No, kid; a mom is a girl."
"Oh..." Chusi giggled.
"You can keep going, Chewy."
" 'kay! N is for nap time! O is for open! P is for popcorn! Q is for...um...q...daddy?"
"Yeah, q is a hard one, sweetie...hm. Quail would work."
"Quail?"
"A bird."
"Ohhh. R is for ready! S is for snake! T is for turtle! U is for umbwella! V is for...very?"
"Very good, Chusi!" Laixi cheered on.
"W is for water! X is for..."
"X ray." Said Brice.
" 'kay. X ray. Y is for YOU! And Z, Z, Z is for ZEBRA!" Chusi clapped her hands together! "Yay yay yay! I did it!"
"Very good, Si Si!" Laixi congradulated, picking her up and putting her onto his lap.
"We're very proud of you sweetie. Guess your little game does work."
Laixi flashed him a winning smile. "Told you so."
Basil was very proud of his little girl. This was a wonderful moment for him...he was with the people he loved and cared about most...
And so was she...even with Brice in the room, the colors she saw were so warm and comforting...and she couldn't feel smarter. She felt like she could write a book; she bet she could do better than that Dr. Suess guy any day!

It would be on a Saturday that you open your mail box (if you have one) and notice there is a rather thick envelope stuffed in there. There is no postage stamp and a very vague return address. But you recognize the font and the company's name. 'Seven of Seven Inc' scrawled in majestic font across the upper left hand corner. As you open it, you may strangely find yourself drawn to the letter, there is a mass of notes inside. They read as follows:
Letter Congratulations! You have managed to succeed in raising your child. (IE: Not killing him or her or getting killed yourself. Haha we kid of course.) We would like an update from you on the following: Guardians Name: Child's Name: Sin: Virtue: Gender: Current Attitude: Likes: Dislikes: Any abnormal growths: (if any, example: Feathers molting, horns growing larger, scars ) Current hair style: Current clothing preferences: Dominant celestial trait: (The sin or virtue) Please summarize in your own words how difficult or easy it was taking care of your child. Did you manage to care for them in a kindly fashion? Or were you forced to discipline them? As well do not be alarmed if you suddenly find your child achieving a massive growth spurt in the next little while. We are finding that the children from our facility have strange growing patterns and are rather unpredictable. Although please let us know if anything unexpected occurs. Sincerely the technicians from Seven of Seven Inc. Ps. Please just leave your letter back in your mail box one you have completed it our courier will pick it up. Thank you.
You would notice the letter seems overly friendly...strange since the scientist were so ...cold before.
(Just take the from Guardians name to Dominant Celestial trait and pm it to the mule, the summarization doesn't have to be long just have fun with it.)

Three Years
Laixi, Basil, and Chusi all sat together at a table at McDonald's, enjoying their meal. Chusi, who sat in between the two, lifted her small cup up. "To us," she giggled, "and to...chicken nuggets. And ice cream."
Basil couldn't help but laugh and preceded to snuggle the day lights out of his daughter. "You are too damn cute!"
"What did I tell you about cursing in front of Si Si?" Laixi leered, nibbling on a fry.
"A few words here and there aren't going to damage her."
"I don't mind, Daddy. I love hearin' you talk no matter what.", she smiled, snuggling her father back.
Basil sat Chusi on his lap, lightly bouncing her up and down. "Well, my little angel, how about we finish up our food and pick out your present for next week?"
"YAY!" Chusi cheered. "Present! Can it be sugar?"
Laixi pinched her cheek. "Well, yeah; we're getting you a cake. You still get something else."
"Oh...YAY again!"
"I can't believe my little baby is already turning six...it seems like just yesterday some random guy dropped you on my door step."
"I love you, Daddy." Chusi snuggled closer to Basil, feeling around for a chicken nugget on the table and eventually grabbing one in the process.
"I love you too, Chewy."
"Three years with the cutest little darling on earth," said Laixi, "and the longest job hunt I've ever seen."
"Don't start this, man; I've tried ALL over town at least seven times over. No one ever seems to be hiring."
"You can get a job, Daddy!" Chusi crawled over to Laixi's lap. "We believe in you!"
"Thanks, Chewy. Maybe one day we'll be able to stop mooching off of Laixi."
The three finished their meal and were headed out the door when Basil spotted Beth the waitress walking to her car.
"Hey, it's Beth!" Basil shouted. "Hey, Beth!"
"Oh goody." Laixi rolled his eyes, picking Chusi up.
Chusi looped her arms around Laixi's neck, looking around to see who Laixi and Basil were talking about, but she couldn't tell which colors she was. A set of colors was coming towards them that were very...pink. And sparkly. Maybe this was Beth. Laixi's colors became very red, and Basil's became pink-ish, too. She didn't seem bad. Why were Laixi's colors so red? She seemed nice.
"Baz, good to see you! Hi...um...Brice?" Beth asked, adjusting her purse on her shoulder.
"Laixi. But you were close." He mustered up a smile, as difficult as it was.
"So, what've you guys been up to? And who's this cutie?"
"I'm Chusi!" she cheered.
"She's my daughter. I adopted her after Alanna dumped me...kinda."
"Wow, Alanna dumped you, like, three years ago! You've had a daughter this long and didn't tell me?"
"Well, you never asked."
"Is he really this stupid?" Beth laughed.
"Try putting up with it since college." Laixi smirked, loosening up a bit.
"So, what have you been up to?"
"Taking care of my little angel, job hunting...the usual."
"Job hunting? For three years? And no one's hired you?"
"Yeah, don't rub it in."
"Why didn't you say you were looking for a job? Ron and I have needed another waiter at the bar for YEARS!"
And unwelcome silence filled the air as Laixi and Basil's jaws hit the floor. Their colors were a very weird shade of blue and it made Chusi laugh.
"Y-you've got to be shitting me." Laixi finally said.
"Hey now, what did you just say about ME cursing in front of Chusi?" was all Basil could think to say. "Why, why, why did you not tell me this sooner?"
Beth grinned. "Well, you never asked."
"Touche'."
"Anywho, I'm sure Ron would hire you right on the spot. In fact, come in tomorrow. Use me as a recommendation and we can start your orientation immediately."
"You're joking!"
"Daddy's got a job! YAY!"
"Hey, congrats, man!" Laixi smiled, patting Basil on the back.
"This is great! I-I couldn't be more happy!!!"
"I'm happy I could help." Beth smiled.
"I feel like I could do anything! Walk on fire! Fly to the moon! ...hey...you know what? Are you free Friday night?"
"Yeah, why?" Beth asked, putting her hand on one hip.
"How would you like to have dinner with me at eight?"
Laixi's heart sank...Chusi saw deep, deep blue and black colors from Laixi's normally bright ones...it made her feel horrible...his colors were changing from and angry red to deep, sad blue in seconds, back and forth, back and forth.
Beth beemed and flashed an excited school girl-ish smile. "Of course! I'll meet you at the bar at 7:30. Can't wait." With that, she got in her car and left.
"Can you believe that, Laixi? A job and a date all it one day!"
Chusi watched Laixi's colors turn a bright red. "Li Li?"
He handed Chusi over to Basil. "I'm going home, Si Si. I promise we'll go shopping sometime this week." Laixi stormed off, leaving a confused Basil in the dust, holding a very sad Chusi.
"...Laixi? What's got his panties in a bunch?"
"Daddy...if me getting a present is gonna make Li Li mad, then I don't want one..."
"What? Oh, no, honey, I don't know why he's mad... lets go home; maybe he'll call us later."
--*--
Hours later, Basil and Chusi were in their apartment playing, Basil braiding a strand of Chusi's hair.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, Chewy?"
Chusi looked up at him with her big, pink eyes. Basil's colors hadn't changed a bit. They were so many mixes of light pink, his regular gray-ish blue-ish colors, and a few sparkles. It was...weird. She didn't like it. And as nice as Beth's colors were and as nice as she seemed...she thought Beth made his colors this way, so she wasn't too happy with her. And what was a date, anyway? Why did it make Laixi's colors so sad and angry?
Is a date what Laixi and Basil should be on? Does Laixi want to have a date with Basil? Maybe a date was like a super fun get together. Basil and Laixi had those all the time. Maybe this was different, then.
"You know I love Li Li like he was my Daddy, too, right?"
Basil blushed. "Well...yeah. I know. And he loves you like you were his daughter...is something wrong?"
"Kinda, Daddy." Chusi admitted. "Your colors are weird and I don't think I like it. I think those are the kinda colors that you should wear when Li Li's around... don't you like him?"
Basil kept forgetting that Chusi was blind and could only see colors of living objects and not the shapes of things. She couldn't see things like walls or concrete or buildings, but she could see the colors of people, flowers, and animals. It just always slipped his mind because the aura/color seeing ability almost made it seem like she could see.
"Of course I like him. He's my best friend...he's the best friend I could ever have. If it weren't for him helping us...well, I was scared for a while, you know? I never took care of a child before. But Laixi has two little sisters; you remember? A little baby sister and a teenage sister. He had to help his mom take care of his two sisters. I don't have any siblings and kids always cried around me."
"I didn't. I think you're a good Daddy, even when Li Li isn't around."
"Thank you, Chewy, but that's because Laixi taught me everything I need to know. You two are the greatest thing that's ever happened to me. And you know...Laixi's the one who stopped me from trying to get Alanna back. That was another one of the greatest things of my life...you two taught me to be..."
"...kinder?"
"...yeah." Basil smiled and hugged Chusi close. "A lot kinder."
"You like Li Li."
"Of course I do."
"Li Li likes you."
"I sure hope he does...I torture the poor guy. But now that I have a job...well, I guess I can start paying him back."
"But Li Li likes you a lot. I think Li Li--"
Before she could finish, the call box went off. Basil lifted Chusi from his lap and set her on the floor, pressing a button on the tiny tan box. "Yello?"
"Basil, let me in." Laixi ordered from the call box.
"Yeah, sure; I'll buzz you in."
Not a moment later, there was a knock at the door. Basil opened it to reveal Laixi, looking at the floor with clenched fists.
"Li Li!!!" Chusi screamed, running up to Laixi and hugging him. "I missed you!"
"I missed you, too. Si Si, Basil and I need to talk."
"Talk while I'm here!" Chusi saw a big change in Laixi's colors...a different shade of red...not an angry one...but a strong one. "I help you!"
"I appreciate it, but Basil and I need to talk alone." Laixi grabbed her hand and led her to Basil and her's room, shutting the door. Chusi waited until she no longer heard his footsteps and felt around for the door knob, eventually finding it and slowly opening it, making sure it didn't creak. She tiptoed through the hall way, peaking around the corner into the living room. She scrunched her wings closer to her back so they wouldn't show.
"Laixi, what's wrong? Why didn't you go shopping with us?"
"You...you really are stupid you know that?" Laixi laughed, showing his face. It was clear he had been crying.
"Yeah yeah, I know that, but I'm worried about you. You're my best friend."
"You barley know Beth. Why did you ask her out?"
"I'd been thinking on it for a while, actually. I just never got the chance. I was so happy that she was helping me get a job at the bar, I felt like it was the perfect opportunity. Why do you care? Do you like her?"
"Not really."
"Oh...is that why your upset?"
"Yes and no..."
"Then what's the matter? Tell me!"
"Basil...I love you, alright? I've loved you since we first met in college. I can't believe you never saw it...I love you so much, and I'm so happy I can help you with Chusi because I love her, too...I've always been so scared to tell you but...s**t, I guess it doesn't matter now that you're going to be with that red headed bimbo. ...I love you with all my heart...I just wanted you to see that...and all I wanted to know is that you love me too. Deep down, I know you do, and you just don't want to see it...I love you, man."
Basil stood in complete shock. Chusi couldn't help but smile. She knew it! Laixi loved Basil! And she knows, absolutely knows that Basil loved him too!!!
"I....I don't know what to say." Basil said, palms sweating.
"...I figured you wouldn't." He turned to the door and opened it, but looked back. "Have fun with Beth." He left, leaving the room in silence.
Basil sank back into his chair and took his glasses off, rubbing his eyes. "What just happened?"
The entire room had such a dark color to it, Chusi couldn't stand it. She loves her Daddy and she loves Laixi... why couldn't Basil, someone who COULD see, be more blind to the situation then Chusi?
