As we all know being a Jew isn't all about religion. It's also the community, the politics... the food. XD

And each person has different experiences. Everyone comes from a different backround and views things differently.

So, anyone want to share some of their experiences growing up Jewish? The good, and the bad.

I myself was born Jewish. My mother and father, on the other hand, were not. My mother decided to convert about 22 years ago, when she was pregnant with my older brother. My dad converted when I was 6th grade.

For a little while I caught flak over it in religious school. Some of my classmates thought I wasn't a real Jew just because my mother converted. It hurt. Here I was raised the same way they were, but I wasn't considered one of them because I didn't have Jewish grandparents. There words, not mine.

And here I go with making threads again... XD;

OMG, This is turning into like... Jewish confessions.

I wasn't born Jewish. My great-grandparents were the last "real" Jews in my family- my grandmother and her first husband converted to be Methodist, and raised my mother that way. I've always thought of myself as being Jewish , as my family still has the same sort of attitudes and morals, (and people always immediately say that I "look it" ^^) but I was especially drawn to it in junior high, and when I was 15 or so decided it was for me. 3nodding

I didn't get much direct hate (the only real instance was when a kid called me a k**e, and I knocked him flat on his a** >.<) but the attitudes in the small Southern Baptist town I live in are far from favorable. I can tell people look at me differently, and I used to frequently get harassed. The important thing is to keep a sense of humor and a thick skin. >.>

My mother's family are Jewish, they came from Germany pre-WWII and from Lebanon. My father's family are Scot-Irish, members of the Gospel Hall which is a sect from the Quakers. I've been called the "K" word before and have had a swastika burned in my yard by some crazy goy,and on the other hand I've also been called a Mamzer by other Jews, because of my personal beliefs which I've promised I wouldn't discuss in this guild unless directly asked. Regardless I've always thought of myself as a Jew. I think one of my favorite things about being Jewish is the food! blaugh Seems like we always get together and eat! biggrin 3nodding heart

BTW My Hebrew isn't the best, does anyone want to volunteer and translate a phrase into Hebrew for me? question

:3 famusamu, I think everyone loves us some good Jewish food.

I grew up in your typical conservative Jewish family- heavy on holidays, light on services. I've gone to a Jewish school since the age of four(the same Jewish school stressed ), and my whole family's Jewish. On my mom's side, my grandmother's side came over from Russia to land in Galveston, Texas, while my grandfather's side ended up in New York (I think they met in Kansas). I don't know what's the deal with my dad's side. Somehow, every single one of them ended up living in North Carolina.

I had my bat mitzvah, still am Jewish, my parents are active board members of like everything, love the JCC, yadda yadda. 3nodding

Sooo many questions, where to begin...........a swastika is the symbol for the Nazi's............... The English that I would like to have translated and transliterated into Hebrew is something my Rabbi once said: "May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi!".............the "K" word is a nasty word that goyum call Jews..............ok now for the questions specifically about my beliefs, before I begin I want it to be known that I am not here to convert or proselytize anyone.........I am a Messianic and I believe in J.C., although I call Him by His Hebrew Name..........but I made a promise when I joined this guild that I would specifically stick to speaking about Jewish issues. I enjoy speaking with other Jews about things no goy could understand, I thank Ha Shem for this guild! 3nodding I hope that no one thinks less of me for stating what I believe sweatdrop

.a swastika is the symbol for the Nazi's...

A swastika is actually a sanskrit character hijacked by the Nazis, then rotated 45 degrees onto its points. It was present in many religions and cultures before the Nazis, and means (roughly) "good fortune" or "good well-being."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

A shame they hijacked it, really.

To answer the thread's question, I'm from Texas. Grew up in the same area as Kao, pretty much. I don't much talk about my "past" with the local Jewish community, or any matters "religious," though. Don't much care for the stuff, nowadays.

Secularists/Agnostics/Atheists get treated just as badly as Jews in the Deep (Baptist) South, though. So I didn't end up missing out on too much. smile

This is true. I tried the agnostic thing for a long time, and got basically the same treatment, but with less...colorful phraseology. xp

Okay. Time for me to add my response.

Half of my family came from Russia, to escape pogroms, and the other half has been here from Germany for generations. The German half settled in CA and the Russians in good 'ole Brooklyn. My Grandparents met when my maternal Grandma moved to CA for the end of her High School and college. Yeah. The rest is history.

But yeah, my whole family going all the way back is Jewish. I even have an uncle Mutge. (Uhhh, not really sure if that's the right spelling ^^: )
I've never really encountered anti-semitism at all, unless you count gratuitious JAP jokes. But when you live on the north shore of Long Island, you kind of learn to laugh them off. (oh. boy.)
