Alcmene's Funeral – ORP

Details here.

The moon was growing dimmer in the days leading up to the death of the queen of the Mwezi'Johari. As the new moon approached, Alcmene took a turn for the worse and grew very ill. Taking everybody by surprise, it wasn't a very well kept secret and by the time she passed away, everybody knew something had happened. King Fafnir made the announcement the following night after some of the guards helped gather everyone together. A funeral would be held for her but not until the full moon, when the Great Lion had woken and would watch over them.

Two weeks later, the moon was full and the pride was gathered again. Rumours that Fafnir would be stepping down were confirmed as it was announced that Khathelela would become queen while another high class lioness, Kibetinyota, would take her place as a Priestess.

The funeral was led mainly by Upenzi, the Priestess responsible for most ceremonies in the pride, with the help of Khathelela, performing her first duty as queen.

Post thoughts and reactions during/after the ceremony here. Note that Khathelela and Thoth would not marry on this night and so wait until the next full moon. In the meantime, the pride has no king, though some may be aware of Lela and Thoth's relationship.

Mawu couldn't believe it. She could not fathom the fact that Alcheme was dead. Thoughts of their first and only real time together, were ones of fear and... well... lots of fear. She had been pregnant by Uli at that time; and had been consoled by the queen. She had felt a soft spot open in her heart for the dark lioness that day, especially since they were sort of... family in a way.

Her death was a sour one in Mawu's heart. She sat beside her two daughters, the now grown Onalim and on onalims other side sat Stellaluna, her youngest. Mawu leaned against Onalim and signed softly into her fur, taking in the breath of her youth; before leaning against her mate, Uli.

Onalim knew it would be hard for her mother to take death in stride. She knew that, despite her apparent comfort for everything-had never been near death before. Onalim also knew that, when they left their last pride-they would never see their families again and to them... that was death. To have someone she had seen around, not really talked to herself, but seen around... and knew that she and her mother had shared a special moment that would always remain in her mothers heart; and Onalim knew it would be a sore heart for a while.

"Oh mother..." She said softly into Mawu's ear; before sharing the pressing of cheeks. She then gazed down at the second generation of her family, the child of her new father and mother.

Stella didn't understand really what was going on but she knew it was serious stuff. She had kept quiet, which was strange for her; and kept close to her Mom and siblings. She knew that any misbehaving at this time would not be seen lightly. So she decided to be a good girl; and to pay attention to what was going on.

She was confused as to why they grieved so badly for the lioness she knew was the queen. Everyone seemed so sad.. and yet Stella only thought of her as asleep in happy dreams. She watched her Mother and Sister embrace and snuggled closer to Onalim; feeling sadness build only for the lack of understanding.

Though she'd barely known the queen, Kizimwi mourned with the rest of the pride. The gray lioness shuffled her paws, ears folded back. Blue eyes glanced to the gathered pride members, and she realized, here and now... She really didn't personally know ANYBODY. This fact seemed to make everything hit harder for her. In a moment of deep sorrow, Kizimwi let out a low and mournful roar.

Kobe'gumu stood at the back of the group of mourners, tears rolling down his cheeks, head bowed in reverence for his fallen queen. When he first learned of Alcmene's death he sequestered himself, vowing not to shed any tears in front of his pride. The burden of ruling a pride had hardened his heart. Only his respect for Alcmene compelled him to be present at her funeral. Now that he was here the reality of her demise sank in again like claws to an old wound and tears flowed as assuredly as blood. After the funeral of his mate, the former queen of the Ilanga, his grief had been so heavy he had not been able to lift his head for days. He truly understood Fafnir's pain. If only he had never started that damn war...

No, he mustn't think that way. The past was behind them now. His focus should be on the future, yet he could not keep himself from regret. He must do everything in his power to atone for his crimes, to earn the gods' forgiveness and, if it was possible, to learn to forgive himself. Maybe that was impossible. To forgive himself was to forget the blood on his paws. He feared what he might become if he forgot those lessons.

Poor Alcmene. Without her kindness and understanding the Ilanga would still be roaming the rogue lands with no hope for the future. For a brief moment, Kobe wished he could have taken her place.

Only the Ilanga knew Dusana's true identity. He had not spoken her name in ages and would hold his silence until his death for his shame was so great. Maybe it was not so unusual that Dusana grew so violent with a warmonger for a father. For this reason, he could not bring himself to stand near the front of the crowd. He choked back a sob, but otherwise stood in silence.

Hecate was in shock, she had seen the queen, and Alcmene had seemed to be recovering well, and now this...now this.. thier queen was dead. The siamese colored lioness could barely believe it, but if so many showed to mourn her it was most certainly so.

She stood to the back her eyes watching her feet. she shuffled her paws uncomfortably in the dirt and lifted her head slowly looking for her family in the crowd.

It was another unbelievable moment for her to think that Lela was queen, not that Hecate felt she would make an awful one, or that she had no right, but the fact that Khathelela's niece had died, and now she was queen. It also meant one other thing..one teeny, tiny thing...her father would be the next king. Thoth..king, wow.

Hecate's life, like many in the pride was being flipped on its head.

Nkosazana has sat herself down near the outskirts of the group. Her eyes were filled with tears. She could clearly recall Alcmene coming to see her. Reassuring Nko that her request hadn't been forgotten and sending her out on her quest.

Guilt wracked the lioness in the weeks waiting for her funeral; she'd returned to find that Alcmene had died while she was away. She felt that somehow, someway this might have been prevented if only she hadn't left. It just couldn't seem possible.

After so many days and nights of crying Nko felt she'd finally gone numb inside. She didn't take much note of the lions around her.
