Akemi's parents split up when he was very young and he has no idea where his father is. He lived with his mother until he was 16, when she told him to move out because she wasn't willing to accept the way he dresses and his sexual orientation. Akemi had wanted to wear "girl" clothes since he was very young and gradually started to wear more and more as he got older, which caused him a lot of problems with bullying in school (but, of course, his mother never paid attention to this). Akemi started making his own clothes and selling his clothing designs and sewing skills when he was 12 and was earning enough money to rent his own apartment when his mother kicked him out. He quit school then and started a serious online business to pay his bills. He was always passionate about music but never thought he would be able to start a band because he never had any friends and people were always putting him down. Akemi is optimistic and his outlook on life helped him to get through the hard times before he met Karin. He strongly believes that you should be who you want to be, no matter who or what is standing in your way, and encourages others to think like this. Akemi took Karin into his apartment and helped him to recover after a failed suicide attempt, when they made friends and decided to realise Akemi's dream of starting a band. Although Karin credits Akemi with saving his life and giving him a more positive outlook, Akemi is also thankful to Karin, who he holds responsible for making his dreams come true and change his life. Akemi is less forward in expressing his feelings for Karin, but several years later he realises he has fallen in love and they become lovers, rather than the best friends they were before. Akemi finds it hard to make this decision because he has always had an image in his mind of who he dreamed his "prince charming" would be, and it was nothing like Karin, but he eventually accepts his feelings.
Akemi also has a good relationship with all of his other band members. He is the band's original "parent" and the others always come to him for help with anything band-related. He can relate most to Shouji, as they are the most 'sensible' band members (and probably the most mature). He doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs and ends up taking care of Yuki and Hiro often when they do. He works a lot with Yuki because they write most songs together. He later gets close to Eiko, not long before his death, which is particularly difficult for him.
