Hey guys! Here is a list of the themes for each monthly contest for 2011, as I promised. Please look through the list so that you can start thinking about what you want to do. A thread for entries will be posted at the begining of each month, and submissions will end at the end of the month. Judging will take place the first week of the next month, and I will try and get your votes on which you think deserves the prize. If you have a question about the list, or would like to suggest something different, please comment below. If you need any help in terms of ideas or technique, you can go to Yattaro's Freaking Method thread or my Comic Workshop thread. Or just post a thread asking for help! January:
Febuary: FanArt Febuary The goal of FanArt Febuary is to copy the style of other artists in order to better one's own style, as well as to pay homage to your favorite show/comic! You can do as many as you want, but only one will be judged for a prize.
-fave character Draw one of your favorite characters, trying to get it to look as close as you can to the original. You cannot copy or trace, you must draw your own pose for the character.
-alt: valentines day/singles awareness day Draw a comic about this day of love (or lack thereof).
March: Riot Month -Riot! Draw a comic of you or your character Rioting, like so.
-Dont forget March 26th is -0 Appreciation Day!
April: Easter -Spring Fever Draw a spring themed comic!
May:
June: Meme Month -Complete a Meme June is Meme Month! (if you dont know what a meme is, here are some examples: examples) We will provide templates for three different memes for you to choose from, and you must complete one of them. If you dont have a tablet, there are other ways you can complete a meme.
July: Independence Day -Independence! Draw a comic about your view of Independence. Dont limit yourself to July Fourth and fireworks!
August: Dog Days of Summer -Hot! Draw a hot summer comic!
September: Somber September -Back to school blues Make a comic that is going for a more serious/somber/sad feeling rather than humor. Not limited to summer and school, can be about anything.
October: Halloween -Trick or Treat! Draw a Halloween comic!
November:
December: Christmas -Finding Santa Gotta find Super Cheese for more details. >w<As you can probably see, a lot of these months have very vague themes. I'm leaving it open for you to be creative. If you dont like that, then suggest some other contest ideas! Entries will not only be judged on artistic skill, though that is a factor. Just because someone has amazing talent dosn't mean they will automatically win. Effort, creativity, originality, and effectiveness are also considered when judging your entries. This year I want to add another factor: popularity. which one do you guys like best? Important! When you submit your piece, please include a title. If you read all the way to the end, post below and include "Viva La Riot-sistance!" in your post

zerochan923600 Deathberry15 well i'm looking forward to these, except the fact that, in my opinion at least, you defined fanart incorrectly. confused DB15 Tee Hee! Would you like to correctly define it for us then? fan art CAN be trying to imitate an artists style in art while drawing their characters but often it is simply >goes to wiki for ease of wording< "Fan art or fanart is artwork that is based on a character, costume, item, or story that was created by someone other than the artist." So if i draw someone elses characters in my style i'm drawing fanart, it might not look like the original artist's work in the slightest, but it's still fanart.

Ah, well, you see, that may be what fanart IS, but it isn't the definition we are using for our purposes. I encourage everyone to draw fanart in any form they wish, I myself do this quite often as it is much easier. However, here at -0 we strive to better our art in everything that we do, and one way to do that is through imitation. The entry for our contest will be judged partly based on how close it looks to the original.

Bear disagrees with this method greatly.

Bear disagrees with this method greatly. You are confusing anatomy with style. imitation fanart helps with style, but one should never use another's art to learn how to properly draw things. when you imitate someone's art, you are getting out of your comfort zone and figuring out the little tricks others use. There is no right or wrong with style. Anatomy on the other hand, whether it be of people animals or things, must be learnt from real life and nothing else. Also, this practice of fanart is not meaning you must abandon your own style and adopt someone else's style. You have yours, and they have theirs. Still, choose someone who can actually draw. you should be imitating someone you aspire to be like. This is common practice in the old days of fine arts when masters would have students who not only worked for them but learned from them through copying of techniques and such. maybe you will like how this one person does hands and incorporate that into your own art. or maybe you will find out what you really dont like doing and never stray down that path again.
