Cais refused to look back at Yue while he walked. His tongue could not be controlled once his anger had reached the peak it was at and he refused to let on to any eavesdropping ears his intentions. It was the truth when he had said he was doing it out of some principle against being threatened, but knowing that she was friends with him was a factor in the decision. If she was willing to fight for that friend then he was willing to fight against her, though not with such noble intentions.

Making his way out to an empty field he finally turned back to face her with fists clenched tightly. His words did not come to him easily and he stood in silence watching the sun begin its descent, his eyes finally met hers and he moved back into a defensive position.

"I think this is far enough out of the way." He glared, his eyes aflame. "Then we should settle it, don't you agree?" He moved his center of gravity slightly lower as he spoke. Though he wasn't sure of her fighting style he was convinced she would be the one to make the first blow. He waited silently and kept his eyes glued on her. One move and he would react, all it would take was one move.

Yue watched his back, thinking it was poor battle sense to allow the enemy such a clear shot. She grimaced, remembering how she had learned that lesson the hard way, watching Jianyu get attacked when his back was turned. It was a cowardly move, but in a war, one should not allow these kinds of openings. Yue didn't take advantage of it, of course, but... she bent down, picked up a small stone as they walked, and cast it at his back. It was no more than a pebble. She wanted Cais to realize it was unwise to have given her his back; although she was not out for blood, so much as to defend someone she cared for, someone later might be. Perhaps his anger had blinded him to that fact, or he somehow felt comfortable with her, assured that she would not attack.

Yue Lao crossed her arms over her chest and grinned at Cais, when they stopped in the field. She uncrossed her arms, took the satchel off her shoulder, and flexed her fingers, stretching and limbering up. Looks like it would be a melee fight, again; bare handed, she fought best. Save with a tekko; that was basically like an extra punch behind her normal attacks. She didn't have one on her at the time, though, and wouldn't use it for such an unfair advantage. Yue Lao surveyed Cais. Was he stronger than he looked, or as wiry and young as he appeared to be? She wondered what he'd look like when he grew up, if he'd become more impressive.

"If you say so, sweetheart," Yue said, winking at Cais and grinning wildly. Her anger had faded on the way over. She maintained her burning desire to settle the score, to defend Jianyu's name, but she wasn't going to be reckless. Yue had fought more intimidating opponents, but still, she knew that others had underestimated her, and it would be best not to underestimate this particular opponent; better to check his skill level before making judgements.

She rolled her shoulders, stretched her legs one more time, and entered her initial stance, swaying slightly, changing her weight from foot to foot. It almost looked like she wanted to dance, not fight. In reality, it would be a bit of both; Yue's style was light and fast, though when she connected a hit to some solid area, it could leave opponents reeling. She studied a bone-breaking style of fighting, but had not broken a bone in quite some time. She was friends with many of the ones she'd fought, or there was some misunderstanding.

"Yeah, we may as well settle it, since we walked all this way," she said, smiling still, always smiling. Yue Lao recognized Cais' unwillingness to make the first move, and that suited her fine. She approached him slowly, teasing, ran her tongue over the ridge of her upper teeth and looked for openings in his defense. Yue Lao lashed out with her weak fist, opening it into a palm strike at the last moment, the force of potential impact resting on the heel of her hand.

He had ignored the pebble. Whether it was intentional or not, the young Lunarian had no intention of fighting in the streets. He was sure there was a reason to it, and perhaps one he should take heed to, though it was the furthest thing from his mind as he watched the girl go through her preparatory motions.

He felt slightly calmer, though the anger stemming from the threat and the mere thought of the Captain still weighed heavily on his mind. As the adrenaline began flowing through him he took in a deep breath, exhaling slowly. One thing he had learned from his previous lost battles was that his emotions had been his downfall. Though he was aware of this fact it didn't change the flow of heat moving through his body. Regardless, he had initiated the combat and thus remained steadfast in that decision. He felt closer to the idea of holding to his beliefs, though even clinging to that thought for his reasoning didn't feel completely justified.

The word "sweetheart" rang harsh on his ears. His eyes were on her again, watching her stance, her technique. Cais was rather impressed by her limberness. He assumed it had something to do with knowing the Captain. It pained him to admit that the Captain was well trained, but he couldn't deny it as he had been nearly killed by him twice before. That fact did not put him at ease. "Good."

She moved slowly, he watched her movements carefully as he slipped further into a defensive stance. Would she attack him swiftly? And with what kind of technique? He felt the wind of her fist move closer and he moved accordingly, moving his arm to block the open palm. She was fast and precise with the strike and he felt the palm hit his bony forearm with a good amount of force. With a thrust forward he moved a fist out towards her shoulder with a quick jab, keeping his other hand close in case of another attack. I wonder how her defenses are.

To Yue Lao’s irritation, he had ignored her friendly warning. Never give an opponent your back, and even when she threw a pebble at him to try and warn him, he ignored it. Did he think she was trying to start the fight already? She sighed and crossed her arms over her chest. No use trying to make him learn; he was clearly going to have to figure it out the hard way. But it wouldn’t be her to teach him. She had her principles, especially with someone she knew through her mother’s business endeavours. She winced. If Yowai knew that Yue was getting into another fight for Jianyu’s honour, she would not be pleased. Especially given it was someone they needed to work with. Yue just hoped that Cais could also be professional, and that he understood this fight would not affect their business relationship.

Just in case, she should clarify, though. “So we’re clear on this, sugar, whatever happens here stays on the battlefield.” Yue massaged her knuckles, easing her fingers and biding her time before her first attack. “I have to think of the errand my boss sent me on, and if that was to be affected by the outcome here… well, it would not be good for my future, nor yours, I suspect. So off this field, we are business acquaintances, got it?” Yue Lao winked and tilted her head to the side. She was serious, of course, but that way she had about her of always seeming drunk affected even her most serious statements.

Cais blocked her first attack, for the most part, and her half-closed eyes scanned his stance. He was observing her, too. It seemed like these first few moves would, indeed, be ones used to study their respective opponents. Yue didn’t switch to her strong arm. She rolled with the shoulder punch, allowing his knuckles to graze over the top of her shoulder and connect superficially. She grinned widely. The thrill of a fight surged through her. At that moment, it didn’t seem like such a bad thing, that she kept getting into fights. It was what she lived for, after all, wasn’t it? Lately, life seemed more complex than that.

Yue Lao tucked her foot up and struck out with a sweeping kick, one meant to unbalance an opponent. She had watched him block her palm thrust; was he as attentive with kicks?

He only dared to speak once he had made contact with her skin. He felt his knuckles brush up against her skin. It was both satisfying and unnerving at the same time. Cais blinked and moved his arm back slowly. The contact had been made, but not direct, no, she had moved. It came naturally to her, Cais observed. "Naturally, can't ruin a business venture over personal feelings." He commented, sincere though sounding somewhat distressed while he watched her carefully.

There was a sudden sting on his leg and he jumped back quickly, nearly tripping over himself in the process. He grunted loudly and regained his stance, two flaming pupils staring back at her. Truthfully he had not anticipated a sweeping kick. Barely missing the fall, he felt the light pulsing of pain on his calf where she had made contact. It was a precise hit and Cais was painfully aware of it.

Moving back into a normal stance he looked at her legs then back up to her face. Though it had seemed that she was in a daze of sorts from her expression she was well aware of her movements and her body. Excitement built up in Cais's mind and he fought to keep a smile from his face. He was gauging her, watching her carefully. Just as he thought, she was skilled, though he still wasn't sure of how skilled.

He paused then moved in, striking with another jab of his arm, towards her other shoulder. He nearly made contact and switched to his other arm, striking towards the same spot. He had begun to move faster, tough not to his full potential. Not yet. he thought. He was rather enjoying himself, albeit it the reason for the encounter.

She grinned widely, content that Cais had agreed to leave their disagreements behind once they left the battlefield. Her othermother's products could not suffer because of Yue's constant urge to fight. The simple pleasure of giving and receiving pain, the thrill of using her muscles the way she felt they were meant to be used: this basic exchange unwound frustration she hadn't even known she felt. It was difficult to say why she had forgotten her love for fighting. Had becoming so attached to Jianyu, fighting for her life a couple times, changed the way she thought of battles? Like this, intimate and without a desire to kill, the fight was fun. It was a game.

The scene on the road wasn't affecting her as much as it once had. She used to sweat over it at night, to avoid the dark, to feel a swell of uncharacteristic anger every time she remembered the event. Now, learning to use a monkey fist, she didn't feel as weak, and lately she'd been getting more practice. Despite her unrequited crush, she was returning to her old self. At least, she felt that she was, but really it was more likely she had changed. Yue Lao was changing constantly, growing up, mellowing out. She used riddles a little less, probably because since working at the Ichi-Koi she had learned how to deal with strangers in a much more effective way. Communication with others was becoming more natural.

Her pink scales seemed to glow with contentment. The kick had connected? She hoped he would be more attentive next time; allowing more than one kick would make the fight too easy. Yue imagined that he had only missed the kick because he had been so focused studying her movements. She did, admittedly, favour her fists; once she had fought with tekko, weights in her hands that gave her punches extra impact. She didn't need them, though. Her jabs and kicks were meant to break bones, in the right circumstances.

Cais was fast. It made sense, given his size. He didn't appear very muscular. However, as Yue had shown many opponents, a flurry of light jabs could be just as damaging as a heavy punch, and she wore herself out much slower than some of her heftier enemies. Cais was small and light, in her mind. All the same, she couldn't keep being cocky and letting the blows in; Yue took a step back, realized he was switching fists, and ended up rolling her shoulder in so that the blow, although more painful than she would have liked, wasn't enough to stop her from fighting. With a wide smile, but no jeering or words, she punched upwards with her strong hand, aiming solidly at his jaw.

Watching his opponent move back against his blow brought a small smile to his lips, but it dissipated quickly back into his mind as he observed her seamlessly roll into his fist, taking the blow but remaining precise in her ability to take it. It was something the young fighter hadn't seen in an opponent in a long while. Though most of his fights had ended in loss he could remember back to his opponents and their complete lack of the ability to take a punch. Perhaps he had gotten lucky that none of those fights had ended in tragedy for him, it still had bothered him that he hadn't seen it before. The same could be said of himself though, perhaps he would learn something from her after all...

Her silence intrigued him and he was inclined to interject something when he felt her body move into another action. He had barely enough time to react, though he had often thought of himself as quick, the swift movement of her arm broke through. Nearly taking a direct hit he managed to lurch back last second, lifting his chin out of reach from the offending hand. The young Lunarian had foolishly miscalculated though and by lurching back and stuck his chest forward and now felt the upwards punch square in his sternum, shoving him back from her.

He coughed and placed a hand over the wound, it had been a hard hit considering the area. Rubbing the afflicted area briefly he regained his stance slowly and faced her again. She was different from his other opponents. Far more skilled than the previous girl to face him and far more perceptive than the drunks he had run from. Vibrations of pain reached down to his lungs as some air had escaped from the blow. He took in a deep breath and tried to calm his muscles, though it seemed to no avail.

Yue wasn't going to go down easily, he'd accepted this from the start though had been pleasantly surprised to see her skills. If anything, he would hope to take something from this fight and perhaps distance himself from "brawler" and move further into an actual fighting style. He had yet to properly find this style and felt this battle could assist him in that nature.

He swallowed and approached back at her, running and aiming for her neck. The aim was to throw her off balance and sweep in with his own kick, forcing her to the ground. The neck was an open place, but could easily be defended. With a quick strike he forced his palm forward towards her, hoping to make contact but keeping his options open should she move.

Normally Yue Lao was not so quiet. She was concentrating, however; savouring. Her mouth was full, in a way, the familiar taste of dust and sweat. It felt like the day was cooling. Every step she took trampled the field, and the blades of grass kept jabbing at her ankles. She was fairly certian they would be covered in small, thin cuts by the end of the fight. Cais had a particular strength that few of her previous opponents had possessed: calm? Yue tilted her head and regarded him, her braid swinging back and forth with her movements. Sakn's vicious temper had been his end, but Cais wasn't about to rush her, was he? She wouldn't provoke him. She didn't like to do that. Yue stretched briefly and took a deep breath, assessing her physical condition. A fight like this, light and casual, could go on forever. Yue didn't really want to settle into a comfortable rhythm, however.

Her knuckles were a little sore from the sternum punch. It helped that she could fight with both fists, switching between them easily. Not always punches, either: sometimes she had quick palm thrusts, or her favourite sweeping kicks. Once, it was the fight she lived for. Observation, fighting. She didn't live unless she was in a fight. That pleasure had shifted a little; she could now live, she had friends, she had people that she loved. Somehow, with every punch thrown and every hit she made, Yue Lao was forgiving Cais for having insulted the people she loved. Besides, she felt that maybe once he got more experience, he'd be a pretty fun opponent.

"Step it up, sweetheart! I wanna see what you've got," she said, suddenly, and grinned again. Although he was probably planning this move before she spoke, she saw him run towards her and aim for what was clearly her neck. She arched one brow quizically and, instead of avoiding his palm strike, she snapped one hand out to grab his wrist and pull him in close. What good was it to rush a melee fighter? He was so close she could practically feel his bones humming, all the tender places to snap and bend and break. Not that she would. Not that she would ever do that again unless it was life or death. If he struck out then, it would be easy for Yue to turn the movement into a balancing act, to turn his momentum into her own. She hoped, for his sake, he didn't let his wrist get caught. They were so tender. Yue could fight with only one fist, but did Cais have a strong fist? Yue's drunken glow bathed her face in its softness, and she looked like she should go down easily. Yue looked like she shouldn't even be standing. But she was watching.

There was always something about her, Cais observed while he felt the contact with her reach. He glanced at her as they came closer, her eyes were aware but her body stance told another story. It was the stance he had seen in the drunks he had fought before, at least, before they had become aware. Though it looked like she was going to fall any moment he had been learning slowly that she was not to underestimated. He felt foolish now, rushing into her like that when she was well trained melee. Somewhere in his mind he felt a familiar sting come back and try as he could to ignore it, it reared its ugly head again.

He studied her for what seemed like endless minutes, though what was merely seconds in battle time. His palm was reaching out towards her but he could see her arm moving towards him. It was a mistake, he realized that now and jumped back away, his palm strike striking at her shoulder lightly. The positioning from the jump threw off his balance and he fell back, away from her, the strike failing as he caught himself, looking back to her with a fire in her eyes.

"Don't call me sweetheart." he managed to press out between taking in some deep breaths. It was an attempt to calm himself back to the cool he had been at before, but now thoughts of inadequacy were swirling. It was far more detrimental than the fight itself, his body tensed up as his eyes glared back to her.

When he finally managed to regain himself he moved in again, but not wanting to make the same mistake of a strike he aimed with a sweeping kick as she had tried to do to him before. But kicking had never been his strong suit.
PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:32 pm

She sighed as he realized that he shouldn't let her get ahold of him. It was partly happy: the fight wouldn't end that soon. It was, however, also disappointment; fighting so close was fun, and she was anticipating it. Instead, she lived with his light blow to her shoulder, shrugged it off. Her smile flickered back. "Why, what's wrong with sweetheart?" Yue tilted her head and flipped her braid behind her shoulder again. She rocked back and forth. "I could call you grumpy shrimp, I guess-- would that be more acceptable?" Yue was teasing, very clearly. She bounced between her right and left feet. Playing around, she didn't pay enough attention to Cais, and his sweeping kick nearly caught her and threw her off balance. However, she staggered out of reach on one foot, flailing her arms to regain balance, laughing. "That was close! You know, I feel like you're too far from me..."

Yue rolled her shoulders and darted in, her pattern unpredictable. She aimed a punch towards his stomach.

Cais rolled his eyes, obstinate to the idea of giving her an answer. Too often he found himself being goaded on easily, he was aware of it, but even the knowledge of something wasn't enough to stop the anger from flowing through him. He watched her nearly fall and raised an eyebrow as she began to laugh. Laughing? Cais was confused as he regarded her. "Too far away?"

The words tumbled from him as she darted to him, her pattern unreadable. Cais made an attempt to shield himself but as his arms moved out to their usual defense position he felt her hand slide into his stomach, pressing hard against the soft flesh. He staggered against it, coughing lightly. He wasn't going to sugarcoat it to himself, there was pain there. Jumping back from her he could feel his body shaking slightly as the strike echoed through the rest of his body.

"Nnhg." He made the sound quietly, and glanced back to her. It wasn't over yet, there was pain sure but he couldn't quit. Not like this. Taking a step he moved towards her, into her circle and struck out a palm to her face. Cais was done being civil for the time being, letting go of his senses to the fight at hand.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 5:41 pm

Yue didn't like that he went for her face. She tsked at him, and raised an arm to block the blow, sending it astray. "Clear your head, cranky shrimp! This fight will not last long enough if you don't," Yue chided, pursing her lips. It irritated her that he had aimed such a blow. Yue didn't give him any ground, however. She retaliated with a jab towards his stomach again. Once injured, twice weak; Yue switched fists and aimed another punch upwards at his jaw. She almost seemed to want to pull him into a hug, the way she moved.

She was getting tired, and as such her movements were a little less energetic, a little less scattered. She seemed easier to read, or at least less wobbly, but it was a mark of the physical exertion of avoiding Cais' attacks. She had let a couple roll off her, glance away, but she hadn't experienced anything like the ruthless pain of her true enemies' onslaughts. Those fights in dark alleys, where she would have been dead if they had gotten their way. Yue tilted her head and regarded Cais: was it possible he, too, had experienced similar situations? Yue fought for what her family believed in, for what she believed in. Cais, she wondered why he was fighting.

Mostly, now, Yue would fight to protect her friends, their honour.

Her words rang out the truth as he struck and missed once more. He opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by another blow to his stomach, he went to dodge but it was far too late. The openness of his last maneuver had left him open for the attack and he felt it lay upon him in a burst of pain. In a sudden move her strike moved towards his face. It was a close call as he shot out a hand, pushing the strike away. They were close now, and close quarters combat had to be used.

But like Yue Lao, Cais had begun to show fatigue. He sent out a strike towards her sternum, somewhat erratically. This fight wasn't like those other fights, but it seemed to be moving to the same end. This irritated Cais and his eyebrows came to a point while his eyes narrowed. He regarded her, his eyes locking with hers. It was a long moment in his eyes, but he saw such devotion there. To her cause and her purpose, to her friend as he could surmise. It was admirable to Cais, that drive.

Pain erupted from him as he moved to make contact, he was unsure of if it would hit but he could feel himself buckling. Allowing her to hit such a tender area had been a mistake. Too many mistakes to save this battle. He thought as he moved into her space further. There was no helping the inevitable now, but he was far too stubborn to give up just like that. He wouldn't stop until he was either dead or knocked out. Though the latter seemed more prudent given the circumstances.
