This is a private roleplay between Cais [Never Crazy] and Yue Lao [Face Your Demons].

Setting:

Artisan's Path.

Yue Lao needs to commission some new bottles for Yowai's vineyard, and wanders into the shop where Cais displays his work. However, will a casual comment lead to Yue Lao's first display of aggression?
PostPosted: Sat Oct 09, 2010 7:56 pm

The sun was unbearably hot. Yue covered her eyes with her hand and stared up at the sky, blinding herself with its dazzling light. She pursed her lips. She loved being warm, but the heat she experienced while walking through the Artisan's path was dizzying. She hadn't eaten properly that morning, and it was making her a little irritable. She sighed, and bumped into a stranger, swiping her fingertips along their bare arm. "Sorry, sorry," she mumbled, as she looked back at them with a smile. A little better. She loved the contact with no obligations; that little touch brought her so much joy. She bumped into a few other pedestrians as she walked, glancing blows which fed her need for contact. Lately she had been starving herself of affection. She found that it had been going to her head, and making her judgement unreliable.

"How can it be so difficult to find good glass work?" Yue muttered, looking in the window of another shop. Sure, there were glasses. There were bottles. Nothing worth anything to her, though; she wanted artistry. She wanted something with soul.

She wore a satchel around her hip. It itched and bounced as she walked, but she had to carry it, so that she could hold the notes and diagrams her othermother had drawn up for her. She was looking for something very specific, though should Yue Lao like the look of a piece, Yowai had agreed to have her purchase it and return with it. If they found an artist with enough spirit in their work, Yowai was willing to sacrifice her own vision in support of theirs. None of the work Yue had seen so far met that description in the least. Clumsy work which had not been blown with precision.

Yue Lao was also looking to commission a special vessel for wine, meant to expose it to oxygen and make the flavour more mellow. Better to drink. She had to find someone with enough skill to produce these things. Finally, she found this one shop. There was a selection of pieces in the window which had been made not only with skill, but talent; they seemed as though the artist loved what they did. Yue could respect that. She took a deep breath, making sure her hair clips were securely in place; if one fell and her hair brushed across her too-warm forehead, it was likely she would have to take a break from the hunt in order to calm down. When she was unwell, her non-existant temper actually seemed to emerge, and small irritations like that added up over time.

Yue Lao took a step into the shop, and looked around her. "Excuse me, I saw the work in the window, and I was hoping to find out who had made it...?" She adjusted the satchel on her hip and pursed her lips.

His parents were gone. It was no surprise on a lovely day, after all, his mother was shopping with his sister and his father off bartering with local shopkeepers and distant farmers, preparing for the next market day. This of course left Cais with the minding of the storefront, a job Cais was resenting as he watched flocks of Lunarians walk past with a rare one stepping inside. Most in that regard were the occasional window shoppers or others checking on various orders.

"Mindless work." Cais muttered to himself after the latest window shopper had come through the wares and left without spending anything. He hated being the only one left to watch the shop, when he was in the shop he wasn't in the workshop and when he wasn't in the workshop he wasn't creating. Occasionally he threw a look to the workshop door, longing to leave his stationary spot behind the till. A voice in the back of his head was egging him on to close shop and spend the rest of the day working on his next piece.

Standing, Cais began to pace around the shop, throwing glances at the front windows for any glimpse of his mother or father coming home or even his sister who he could dump the job on in lieu of retreating back into the workshop. There was no such good fortune to be had and Cais moved back to his stool, moving all his weight forward and tapping the stool back against the floor angrily.

Deep in thought, Cais didn't hear the opening of the door nor the footsteps of the girl walking into the establishment. He was deep in a trance staring at the window when her words struck down his concentration. The stool flipped down onto all fours while he stood quickly, staring towards the doorway. "W-welcome." he stammered out while moving away from the wayward stool.

Quickly he regained his composure and cleared his throat accordingly. "It depends on the window, actually." he said with a small smile. "Those pieces are my father's while those..." he said with a gesture of a finger, "I made myself." Cais was genuinely relieved to have a question asked his way that wasn't about pricing. "Is there something specific you're looking for?"
PostPosted: Mon Oct 11, 2010 8:02 am

A grin spread across Yue Lao's face when the stranger knocked the stool over. "Thanks," Yue answered to his greeting. Her eyes were slit, and her skin flushed. She was filled with curiosity as to what his true nature was, and how she might go about provoking it. It would, ideally, take her only this meeting to learn the basics of his personality; Lunarians seldom took more effort than that. Perhaps it was a testament to the clarity with which they communicated, but Yue spent so much time picking at small gestures and the million meanings of words that she noticed things others did not. She couldn't always tell what an expression or gesture was concealing or alluding to, but the shift was almost always caught.

"I see, so this is a family business? As a matter of fact, I am looking for something specific..." Yue Lao smiled and winked at him, swaggering over, her hand still balanced on the strap of the satchel. She stood a little too close to Cais, observing him, looking him over. He looked so much younger than she was, but perhaps it was merely his height and slenderness that made it seem so. "Do you think, possibly... you could take a look at something for me?" Yue asked, her voice low and teasing. She grinned, almost predatory, and finally opened the satchel. She laughed, breaking her concentration, and unfurling the notes and sketches from her bag.

"Can you read?" she asked. The diagrams were a little too vague, since Yowai didn't know anything about glasswork, she just knew what she wanted in terms of aesthetics. The notes, then, were important; specifics about what she was hoping to obtain, how many, things such as that. In particular, there was a request for blue glass, which Yowai had seen while travelling to another store. "My... employer," Yue began, pausing in order to select a suitable term for her othermother, "Owns a vineyard and makes her own alcohol; she sent me to see if I can't find someone suitable to commission some new bottles and ... there is a creation she would like, though she hasn't seen them around much, which would expose the wine to the air and improve its taste before being consumed. Take a look at these, tell me if it can be done?" Yue flashed him a smile.

Could he be unsettled? Flustered? Would he simply breeze past her wild nature and go straight to business? Yue, herself, often grew rather serious when she was working on a new beverage, so if glasswork was his passion, she imagined something similar might apply.

Her face drew his attention immediately as he cocked his head slightly. Why is she looking at me like that? he thought, watching her approach while cocking his head just slightly to left, taking her in. She looked... nice enough, as Cais put it in his mind after he noticed the wink, though something about appeared off to him. Not to say he had the most experience with women, this one just seemed unique in regards to the other girls he had witnessed at the Academy. When she stopped Cais could feel her breathing on him while she towered awkwardly close to him. "Erm." He let out while taking a small step back.

As she continued on to ramble about her request, Cais took an instant note of her tone and lifted an eyebrow towards her. That air about her was suddenly feeling a bit less friendly... After watching her shuffle through an explosion of parchment the words hit him. "Can you read?" He felt his eyebrows furrow slightly at the question while his fists clenched together for a moment, but quickly reset themselves while she continued to explain her request.

Alcohol? Cais had rarely seen requests for bottles, but usually when they came in they were for oils or decorative purposes, not for alcohol of all things. He made a barely audible snort at the word, but let her finish. With a slight movement he grabbed hold of the sketches, taking them from her gently and looking them over. A smile crossed his lips. "I can read these fine, though the illustrations are a little interesting I can see what the drawing is attempting."

His eyes glanced back up towards her. "I can manage the design just fine, as well as the coloration though it would take longer to add the coloring in during the process, that only means it would take me an extra day or two for proper cooling." Again his eyebrow raised. "But alcohol? That seems like an interesting thing to commission bottles for." He looked back towards her, nearly in disbelief that the girl standing before him was working in that sort of industry.

Truly, Cais loved the idea of the design regardless of their use and regardless of how perplexed he was at the girl's career choice. It was refreshing to see unique designs being brought to him directly rather than rarely being handed off things from his father. Typically Cais didn't get orders, he would just create and his pieces would be added to the stock of the storefront. He never had real interaction with those buying his pieces, not like this. He was beginning to feel a bit better about being left behind to mind the shop.

He didn't feel the need to admit this to the girl before him, but rather smiled smugly towards her. "An order like this would take... four days, if these numbers are correct."
PostPosted: Tue Oct 12, 2010 7:27 am

What a sensitive boy, Yue Lao thought to herself. She had, of course, caught his subtle shifts in stance, and the snort, though the sound was nearly silent. She wasn't exactly standing all that far away, even after the step he had taken back. Her brows shot up and an amused smile tugged at her lips. She didn't know what his problem was, really. "My employer's artistry stops with her brewing," Yue Lao explained, grinning at Yowai's rather chaotic sketches. She found some of his expressions and shifts in mood difficult to associate with the conversation. Usually, she could line things up; one column always corresponded to the other. Sure, there was the occasional slipped gesture out of context, but for the most part... Lunarians made sense.

He seemed almost as though he wasn't fully aware of his own being yet, so that he was a jumble of what she could read from him. It didn't help that he seemed a bit younger than her. Yue Lao placed her chin in her hand and tilted her head, observing him, her eyes glittering. The entire time she had been in the store, her eyes hadn't widened at all. A smile spread across her face when he affirmed that he could create the design as well as the blue glass. She clapped her hands together in contentment. "An extra day or two is nothing in the grand scheme of things," Yue said, approving his assessment.

"Is it? Where else is the alcohol going to go?" Yue Lao laughed. "Unless you mean any bottle would suffice. Our wine isn't any wine, though," she winked. Yowai wanted these special bottles for her reserve stock; the best quality of grapes, ones that not only began flavourful, but improved over time. The pretty bottles that Yowai wanted could be reused or serve as any kind of ornament or vase if her clients really wanted. All in all, Yowai created luxury wines. She dealt with Nobles daily, though she was Legion.

Yue Lao resisted the urge to snort in derision when he made his smug assessment, "Four? Sounds fine to me, though please take your time; I will come back in the four days, to check up on the pieces, and if they are not ready then, you can arrange a later day for me to return. It is extremely important that the bottles be as well-crafted as possible." She paused, drew out a contract and the purse Yowai had given her. "Although I am here because the work in that display is artistry, so I expect good things," she complimented the creations of both himself and his father. Yowai never paid poorly. When it came to her brewery, everything was of excellent quality, and that was how she was able to charge so much. Her product was stunning, and most of her money went back into the brewery, instead of into her own pocket. That was why, although they lived well, her family was nowhere near rich. Yowai, because of the nature of this commission, knew it would be prudent to pay the full price right away, though she had prepared a document to mark the transaction. Yue Lao unfurled the document and took out a thin brush from her bag, as well as the vial of ink. Displaying almost disturbing balance, she raised one knee, balancing her foot against her stable knee, and then placed the document there. She undid the cap on the ink, filled in the appropriate info with her small brush. She was letting the ink dry, still balancing.

"What draws you to your art?" She asked, making idle chatter while the document dried. She tilted her head again, though she was being careful not to upset the ink on her knee. Obviously, Yowai hadn't intended for her to draw up the remaining information so haphazardly, but that was Yue's own touch of chaos. In truth, this stranger was probably seeing one of her most tame sides. She was there on business, discussing artistry as well as occasionally the profession she loved and belonged to. The combination made her much better mannered than typical of her, though she always looked drunk, regardless of mood. Her posture, then, seemed at odds with her gestures and facial expressions.

"Well, when I say that it's an odd thing to commission for is that we rarely get requests for unique designs." Cais said delicately, recalling to the last order his father had gotten from a brewery which had only sent the numbers and dimensions of the bottles. It had been a dry experience for Cais to watch his father complete the task, noting that his father looked neither happy nor satisfied with making a generic bottle over a hundred times in a row. Since then Cais had found the notion of employing a glassblower for such generic orders was in distaste. Why waste talent on something that could picked up from a local store?

Cais was relieved that she seemed to understand and respect the complexity of his families' work. He smiled at her comment of expecting good thing and nodded to her. "And I'll make sure that you'll get good things in return." Cais watched as the strange Lunarian pulled her contract out and began to balance with an odd grace between parchment, brush and ink. Cais was fairly impressed how she managed it, though wondered why she had made it difficult for herself in the first place.

"What draws you to your art?" Cais blinked, nearly caught off guard. Though he should have been expecting such questions to arise, especially given the way she was carrying herself, he didn't have an immediate response. After a pause he looked back to her. "I'm drawn to the creation aspect in itself. With glass, it takes a lot to even begin, but it starts humbly as sand, which I gather myself, and other components which are brought together and through heat is able to be molded and shaped to fit anything I might want to create." Cais felt slightly strange talking about his craft, but enjoyed having the ability to share it. "The blowing aspect is part of the personal nature of it. Using my own breath I can shape the glass to fit my desired result, with my own hands using the tools to assist the shaping. I find that personal nature of it... thrilling." Cais paused for a moment, watching her for any sort of change in her balancing. As there was none, he continued on as now he felt compelled to do so.

"It's often self-reflective and when I'm done with a piece I can look back on it and see myself, my moods and actions, reflected back into it. When I'm finished it usually ends up sold as a decorative piece to someone who appreciates it. Though I'm generally not around to see that, it's a matter of pride to know that someone out there enjoyed your piece enough to buy it and place it somewhere to be admired."

Cais was suddenly calmed while speaking of the craft of glass creation and glassblowing. This time when he ceased to speak he felt more inclined to leave it on a good note. It truly was his opinion though and, even if awkward, sharing it with someone with a knowledge of artistry helped soothe his normally rocky nature. By the minute he was growing more excited about the job at hand, though he held it in as much as possible.

It was difficult for Yue to keep herself in check, to remind herself that Yowai was not her othermother today, she was her boss. Yue had to keep catching herself, to prevent from slipping with that. "That makes sense," Yue admitted, grinning. Yowai wanted something special, and she'd wanted something special all along, which was why she'd sent her daughter trudging down the street all day. Yue was beginning to think she'd search forever, really, so she was happy to have found someone with skill and passion for what they did.

Yue enjoyed balancing the ink and fibre-based scroll on her knee. It was a task to keep her mind occupied, and prevent her from speaking in riddles again, or from causing trouble. She really did want to needle this Lunarian, to see if he had a short temper, or if he was more patient than he seemed. However, business really did dictate she should be pleasant, as boring as that was for someone like Yue Lao. The balancing act helped her occupy her rapid thoughts and thirst for chaos.

She stayed silent, listening to his explanation. Why he felt so strongly about his art. Yue was comforted, knowing that he truly was driven. A work of art was best produced by someone who felt passion, in her opinion. It gave things a depth which couldn't be faked or forced. A sincerity. "If your pieces are self-reflective, does it mean you keep your past around you all the time?" Yue asked, tilting her head to the side, smiling in a curious sort of way. By that time, the document had dried. She picked it up and offered it to Cais to read. She felt as though while he was talking, she had learned more of his nature, and their atmosphere was less tense. "See if everything here is alright? We can work out payment, and I'll sign the details in. By the way, you might want to know who you're dealing with! I'm Yue Lao," she finished, with a wink.

Cais blinked a few times in response to her comment. The past... He shot a glance to the back of the shop, towards where his room would be, then looked back, shaking his head slightly. "You could say that. More so that you could probably at least tell if the piece was made out of happiness, sadness or anger." The words came across bitterly while some memories hit him. His head shook again as if to dislodge the thoughts and he looked back to her, taking the parchment as she handed it over.

Holding it taught he looked it over, squinting slightly to get a better look at the scrawled words. He was surprised to see the writing to be better than that of most of the orders he had looked through. He muttered the words under his breath as he read, but was then stopped by her voice. Glancing upwards at her he caught her wink and blushed slightly at it. He wasn't sure what it meant and while the color in his face returned to normal, he coughed lightly to clear his throat.

"I'm Cais." He said, a little softly with a nod to her. "It's nice to meet you Yue." Taking another look down at the document he nodded with approval. "This all looks fine." His eyes met hers when he looked up again. "I'm interested though, where does your business supply to? Or do you sell out of the business itself?" His curious nature was leading his course now. More or less he wanted to know if he had ever run across it in passing and maybe if there was a place he'd likely be able to try it.

Though he wasn't truly a drinker he wondered what would be going into the bottles and how it would taste. Ignoring his better judgment, as he had seen close up what follies lie with those who drink, it struck him that if she had seen his wares and his art that he too should experience hers.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 26, 2010 11:25 pm

Yue Lao tilted her head to the side, regarding Cais. She heard the bitterness, wondered at its origin. Cais had a lot she wanted to dig at, emotions to unearth. He seemed like, given the right opportunity, he could be extremely expressive. Perhaps in a different setting, if she wasn't acting on behalf of her othermother... Perhaps then she could see if she was right. If Cais could be provoked. "All the blown glass, it has a piece of its creators in it," Yue added.

She couldn't help but laugh when Cais blushed. She reached up to cover her mouth with her hand, stifling herself, though she couldn't help all of her laughter. It didn't really occur to her that even on her best behaviour, she was still a little too outrageous. Only a little, of course.

"Pleasure to meet you, too, of course. Cais." Yue stuck the tip of her tongue out, its pink tip barely visible. Her eyes flickered down to the document as he approved it, though it was just a reaction without thought; she already knew what was written there, of course. She didn't need to look at it again to remember. She tilted her head to the side and pursed her lips, moving her satchel on her hip, before answering. "We supply to the Ichi-Koi, to a few other establishments in the area, and we have a store not too far from here where we sell it to individuals by the bottle. Occasionally, for our more dedicated customers, we deliver cases to their homes," she said, her eyes cast upward. She was remembering all the places where they sold it, information she had learned by heart. She knew all the names of the families who bought wine from them, though their customer list was confidential.

"Why?" she asked, amused.

She wondered how he felt about the alcohol. While thinking of her questions, she handed Cais the purse of coins, "Count them? See if that's acceptable." Yowai had been generous, told her not to bargain. Just this once. It wasn't that Yowai was a pushover. She was very aggressive when she knew the value of what she wanted, or needed. For this, however, since it was such a work of love and she needed such quantities, she hadn't bothered. "So, Cais, how do you feel about alcoholic beverages?" Yue asked, grinning. She looked off at the work in the windows, watching the way the light played through it.

Cais was confused. Not to say he hadn't already felt a little off since Yue had walked into the establishment. He heard her laugh and glanced down at himself to see what had provoked it. Nothing had changed from his stance, perhaps his hat? He moved his hands to fix it, settling it back on his head like normal. That wasn't it. He shrugged to himself and watched while the enigmatic girl continued on.

Two words caught him. Ichi-Koi. Cais's stomach churned. He knew the Ichi-Koi as a popular spot and had thought to maybe go there once he got a little older. Those dreams had died as of recently. Near evening when he had been walking home he decided to take a peek into the bar. What he saw had been one of thing things, or rather, one of the somebodies he didn't want to see. The hair had been unmistakable, it had to have been him. Seeing him sitting there and turned Cais off to the Ichi-Koi ever since, leading him to even avoid the street all together to not risk it.

Cais's eyes had grown darker while mulling over the thoughts in his head. It wasn't what he had anticipated to think about, especially on a day where he felt he was getting lucky with the commission. Her "why" brought him back and he looked to her. "Just curious."

With the jingle of the coins Cais's head had come back from the dark spot where it had gone. Taking the purse he opened it carefully, looking inside to count them. His eyes moved quickly through the coins and he nodded to her, closing the purse and keeping a hold of it. "Works fine with me." he said, casting a smile her way.

Her next question seemed to startle the young Lunarian. It seemed odd to him that she managed to pull one bad memory after another up from within his mind. This one had a simple answer though, and he was happy to have that. "When there's too much involved it makes idiots out of decent Lunarians." He said. Though it sounded like something his father had said over and over again, but Cais had actually lived through an ordeal spawned by drunks and nearly died because of it.

"I don't mean that like..." His mind raced to find a good metaphor. Thinking back to the Ichi-Koi he found one. "Like trying to get away from a dog by jumping on rickety hale bays idiocy, I mean violent and belligerent idiocy. Not to say everyone does that, but it happens more often than I'd like it to." He glanced to her.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 10, 2010 9:42 pm

Yue watched him fix his hat. She wondered what made him so self-conscious. And then his expression when she mentioned her work... what was going on in his mind? "Cais, do you have something against the Ichi-Koi?" Yue asked, tapping her lip with her finger. His eyes grew darker, and his answer seemed dismissive.

She was glad to hear he was content with the money. She expected no less; Yowai wasn't trying to cheat the craftsmen out of their work. She really did like to tip generously when it was possible, and for these bottles, it was desirable. "I'm glad to hear it; we can just mark it off on the document then, and I'll get your signature that everything has been paid in full?" She finished, grinning. Her eyes were devoid of their usual curious heat. Instead, they glittered with the kind of attention she gave matters of business.

"I've seen all kinds of drunks," Yue said. "One of the things Yowai mused about often when I first started working with her... was that sometimes alcohol exposed whatever it was about a Lunarian they were trying so hard to hide. So, for example, if you were to drink too much, we might find that underneath your fretful exterior there is a bundle of secrets wrapped in apprehension," Yue suggested, only framing it like a joke. She did wonder what was beneath his fidgety exterior; he seemed to view alcohol rather negatively, and she wondered what had caused that. There was often a root, to fears like that.

Yue finished the document up again, and offered it to Cais to sign, noting the amount was paid in full. "I guess I can't invite you to drink with me, but that's okay; I don't drink much," Yue said, grinning. "I convince my best friend to try all my alcohols," she finished, and laughed.

Cais shrugged. "It's just a place I try to avoid. Y'know, unscrupulous characters and what not. Rather avoid those kind of people." He tried to pass it off as a mere statement seeing as he felt no need to divulge that bit of unpleasantness in detail to the energetic girl. Taking in a deep breath he stood straight up, watching her grin then continue on.

Her talk of drunks sent a shiver up his spine and then it turned around on him. He blinked at her statement and cringed at the thought. Exposing what he was hiding? Cais frowned. He didn't like the idea of alcohol to begin with and the reminder of it's other side effect struck a nerve. Guess it is best that I didn't find a place to drink in public. He thought, shooting her a small smile. "I guess we'll never know then." He mused, reaching a hand out and taking the scroll.

Moving to the nearby desk he signed the document quickly, looking back at her. "So I take it that your friend can hold their alcohol pretty well?" He finished and handed it back to her, smiling. "There we are" He said, watching her expectantly. He cocked his head just slightly, looking her over with his own curious gaze. Something about this girl seems off still, but I can't put a finger on what that is still.

Her pleasant admiration of Cais' passion for glass work was shifting to a kind of apprehension. She suspected that had she not been on her best behaviour, Cais would never have been as pleasant as he was. The words Those kinds of people echoed in her and made her bite back a frown. Yue thought that perhaps it would be best if she wrapped the interaction up. She would likely send one of the labourers back whenever the bottles were ready; she was pretty sure that if they met again, she wouldn't be able to hold her personality in check any more.

Although her eyes didn't necessarily pick up his shiver, she could see the shift in his body language, the way he seemed to grow steadily more uncomfortable. Was he afraid of drunks, then? He must have had a bad experience with them. She hid another frown as she thought of that. To be afraid of drunks... well, she supposed he was the kind of Lunarian who only saw drunken displays when he went near pubs, bars or brawls. It was just like any other situation: the loudest, most obnoxious individuals get noticed first. It doesn't mean that they're the only ones in there. She thought with fondness to the first time Jianyu had come to the Ichi-Koi to drink. "Well, it's true that I may never know, but you might just find out one day," she ammended, her eyes glittering with a predatory sort of amusement.

"Some of them," she said, laughing. "Jianyu is my favourite, though." She cast her eyes to the left, her smile soft to match the gentle affection that coloured her eyes. He would always be her best friend. She couldn't help that. "We don't always drink though," she said, "mostly we have fun however we can."

Yue recognized his observation, and under it she straightened her posture and kept infallibly smiling. The secrets she kept inside were locked up so well that sometimes she herself forgot their truths.

His entire body stopped as a darkened expression filled his face. It was immediate reaction to the one word that set him off.Jianyu. The room seemed to grow smaller in his head, the sudden happiness of the transaction leaving him completely. His fists clenched and he glanced at her, a new fire in his eyes. Cais was biting his lip, fighting back the sudden influx of anger building up in his body.

He couldn't help himself, regardless of the transaction. "Jianyu? You mean you know that... brute?" He tried to use a delicate word given the situation, though the sharpness of his voice would have betrayed any sensitivity he was attempting.

It was an odd concept to him. One of the people he disliked most in the world was connected to this girl? He glanced at her. It hadn't hit him that someone like Jianyu could know so many people, let alone be friends with other people. Cais grunted as his body tensed even further. He felt it was done then, the situation was clearly going downhill from there. "I'll just... get working on this then." He muttered, casting his glance away from her.
