Has anyone had any experience with this program? Due to my location there are no ways to learn Japanese in a class or from a teacher so that leaves software and books. Is this program any good? What books would you recommend to go with it?

Software:

I've used it myself, as had my little sister, so I can safely say that the programs are effective.

Dictionaries:
Go to a bookstore and pick up the Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary Japanese, and The Learner's Kanji Dictionary by Mark Spahn and Wolfgang Hadamitzky. The former has EVERYTHING (including words you don't normally find in many dictionaries, let alone foreign language dictionaries), and the latter is really easy to use. That will round out the whole written thing, so that it's not as complicated as it could be.

As for books on learning spoken Japanese, you'd be best off looking around in the language section of the bookstore and picking out a book that you really think will help you learn to speak the language.

That help? biggrin

Likewise. It's really great for learning the language *even managed to put me on my toes more than once*, BUT IT'S EFFIN' EXPENSIVE TO GET! *$200+ is how much you'll pay) So get it, if you're totally serious about the language. If not, save some cash, and buy some learning books.

I noticed that program in my school, though it looks like they weren't going to go through with a full installation because when I click it it said it was removed or something.. I don't remember.. But I did do the demo, and it looks and seems pretty useful I have to admit I liked the pictures and word matching heheh, but yeah that program is REALLY expensive, so I'm with Koiyuki on that if you're going to dedicate yourself to it and REALLY want to grind it in there then have at it, if not.. there's other free ways I'm sure, it just takes more reading and less activity. >>

*Is excited and squeaks* IT REALLY WORKS! I HAVE LEVEL ONE OF JAPANESE FOR ME WHICH IS WORKING REALLY WELL! I have some volcabulary in my journal, but I haven't finished with all of it yet. My brother has Arabic and it seems to be working. If you are really serious then GET IT! You can set your own standards for it with the homeschool edition at least. At first mine was at least 90% efficientcy, but I didn't think that would work so I changed it to 100%.
For books I suggest Kodansha's dictionaries. For learning kanji and kana get Remembering the Kanji and Remembering the Kana by James W. Heisig. I learned the hiragana and remembered most of it in 3 HOURS!! For grammar I'm afraid I can't tell you because I'm still looking for something that will help with that.

My Rosetta Stone scores:
01-01 100%
01-02 96%
01-03 100%

I tried the demo and stuff and was considering buying it. But I decided not to because I learn better by just studying from a book. I could afford it but I didn't think it was worth it. I'm using "Japanese for Busy People" and we use it in my Japanese class and it working so well. I bought a dictionary that has the written romaji and kanji and it works really well. I aslo bought "A guide to learning Hirgana and Katakana and I learned it really fast!

Actually it IS worth it. It's the highest rated language program in the world AND they have the most languages to choose from too.
