"σnce upon a time..."
Usually fictional stories begin with this innocent phrase, catching the attention of all who dare to read. However, there are some instances that allow this phrase to be used without any sort of fictional back drop. Someday, people will look back on this and tell their stories with the same opening, only much less innocence will be found in the tale.

ωelcome to Blackridge.
This place is your home. This chaotic, crazy, loud, fun-filled city is where you are living. You have your group of friends and your job, the occasional bout of drama and a nice enough apartment. This all changes, though, when Blackridge awakens one morning to see this... Thing looming around it. No one can leave the city. No one can enter the city. No one knows why.

ωhat`s going on here?
Where did this force field come from? Will you ever be able to get out? Will help ever be able to get in? As the city deteriorates into anarchy and chaos, how will you survive? You must find somewhere to stay, and try not to be alone. Mysterious things seem to happen to those who travel by themselves. Figure out your skills and hide your weaknesses, because you never know who or what might use them against you.

ife as you know it has ended.
How will you handle Blackridge?

1/16/11

On one not-so-average day, Chris woke up to the reflection of the sunlight shining onto the bright white snow on his window sill, and woke up quickly, shielding his eyes. He sat up from his bed and clutched the comforter and ripped it off, in anger to a rude awakening. Chris got up anyway, took a shower and walked into the kitchen of his small apartment to make breakfast to start another day in Blackridge. A loud "bang" caught his attention, and caused him to drop his frying pan onto the floor. He picked it up, and set it down on the counter. He walked outside, oblivious to the cold, and looked over his balcony to the city below. A cloud of grey smoke gathered into the air in the distance. Small screams were heard a moment later, screams of terror. Chris shook his head, and shifted his vision around a few buildings to see the accident; a burning car sitting in what seemed like the middle of the road, at the far end of the city, from what he could see. What had caused this accident? A bomb? But what the real answer was, Chris didn't know he could believe. It seemed impossible.

~1/14/11~

The cold, wet snow on the ground soaked through Chris's jeans as he continued his way down the front steps of his apartment building. The harsh morning sun shone off his truck and hit him in the face, forcing him to shield his eyes from the light. There his truck awaited; almost a year of work money, put to good use. He couldn't help but slide his hand across the hood, and along the paint to the door handle. The feel of this brand new truck just felt right. Like this is all he wanted. But of course that wasn't true.
It was a Saturday morning, around eight a.m., and Chris was heading off to the center of Blackridge to work as a coffee shop clerk, serving coffee and whatnot. This was one of the only jobs he's had in his entire life that he had ever enjoyed. It earned him money, it payed the rent.
As Chris drove down Blackridge's smooth paved roads towards the center, his phone rang. “Hello?" he answered.

"Good morning, Chris. What're ya up to?" It was his mother, she sound enthusiastic, like always.

"Oh, hey mom. Just heading off to work. You can drop by if you want--"

She interrupted. "You know I don't like being in the city. I just can't handle it like you can."

Chris sighed and said, “Sorry, I know. It was just a suggestion." He hasn't had his coffee yet, and he was tired. “How's Dad?"

"I just got back from the hospital, actually. He's doing okay, I guess. Chemo's got him all tensed up and tired. Had to shave his head yesterday. He didn't want his hair to fall out gradually. But he's getting better, slowly."

Chris took a left turn onto Main Street. "I'm glad you've noticed some changes.”

"Me too, honey. Listen, I've gotta pick up some groceries for your sister back at the house. I'll talk to you soon. Love you, bye."

"Bye, Mom, love you too.” He hung up the phone and noticed he was stopped at a red light that turned green, but he just couldn't move. He was thinking too much.

"Hey, move it!" Loud yelling and beeping horns was enough to wake him up from whatever world he was just imagining himself in. And at that, he sped off towards work.

Emiline awoke to the harsh cold of her apartment. It wracked her coverless body, shaking her awake from a fitful sleep. As she surveyed her apartment, she realized that the power must`ve gone out. The heat was all electric, all throughout the apartment. She also noticed that none of her lights would turn on, and that her shower was also freezing. "The hot water heater must be out, too," she thought, wrapping a towel around herself. After dressing snuggly in a long sleeve shirt, a pair of jeans, and a heavy pull over sweat shirt, Emiline checked the time on her phone. Seven thirty-four. Just on time.

She opened all the shades in her apartment. Almost immediately after, she wished she hadn`t. Below, chaos and anarchy had erupted. Forget the usual chaos of any large city in the early morning hours, this was true horror. People could be seen holding signs and shouting, and it was to them that Emiline was most drawn.

"TELL US MORE! TELL US MORE!" the people shouted. She looked around, trying to get a visual on what they were talking about. Nothing could be seen, save for the frantic masses. She watched people trample their fellow man to run away from something. She saw police officers bludgeoning unruly citizens to the ground. She saw mothers holding their children close to them, weeping as if their very lives depended on how many tears they shed. It was then that she heard the screaming child.

"The wall got my mommy! Help me, the wall got my mommy!"

Emiline cringed and shrunk back from the window. "No," she whispered to herself, feeling nauseous. "Not now."

Emiline awoke on a rather normal day to the sound of her alarm clock going off. Wrapping a blanket around her before standing and stretching, she shuffled her way over to the bathroom, discarding the blanket at the door. Her long, lean figure glided past the mirror as she turned on the shower, then removing her usual sleep wear; underwear, over-sized tee shirt, and long socks. After a warming and awakening shower, she pulled on her favourite pair of skinny jeans, a black tee, and a red pull-over sweat shirt.

She flung open the shades to her apartment, revealing another crisp winter day in Blackridge. She smiled as she descended the stairs, heading to her old truck. She jumped in and pulled her hair up into a quick-and-effortless messy bun, then applying the usual eyeliner. She was now officially done getting ready for her day. She then sped off for her favourite place to be in the morning; the local coffee shop. It would take her a good twenty minutes to get there and it was another ten minutes away from her work, and there were plenty of closer places, but Emiline liked their coffee (and, not to mention, their employees) much better.

"This is probably the best, not to mention the worst, idea that I have ever had..." Emiline sung quietly, along with a song by one of her favourite bands. Today was going to be a good day, she could feel it.

Chris drove down the long streets of Blackridge, as the winter's wet slush stuck to his tires and was strewn everywhere. The delightful morning snowfall clamped itself to the windshield of his truck. This reminded him why he loved the winter so much, all the snow. He eventually turned on the windshield wipers, and pushed the snow aside to clear his vision. Chris took a right onto the street of his work, where the Blackridge Center Coffee Shop was awaiting his arrival. He looked quick at the digital clock. It read 8:27, just on time.

Chris pulled up to the back employee parking lot of the store, locked up his truck and headed inside through the back. He made his way down the hallway and into the front of the shop, turning on a few lights his boss had neglected to turn on. Just then, his boss walked in from the bathroom. "Good morning, Rick." Chris greeted him nicely.

"Hey, Chris. Thanks for setting up." Rick thanked him politely as he went into his tiny office to pay off some bills.

"No problem!" He shouted at him while he was leaving, and quickly turned the "closed" sign to "open." Chris had noticed a few dirty rags and some empty coffee cups overflowing the trash can. "This isn't my job..." He thought quickly and hastened to pick it all up and take it outside to the dumpster and the rags into the laundry pile. It was always like this; something had always been left undone. It was ok though, he loved his work, no matter what. It made money. Just then, he noticed a familiar truck pull up to the small customer parking lot. It was Emiline, one of his best friends he'd known for a while now, almost four years. He watched as her beautiful dark hair flung around in her messy bun as she exited the vehicle and headed for the store. Chris walked over to the counter and grabbed his apron before she came in, ready to take her usual order.

Emiline was still smiling as she parked her truck and as she pulled out the keys. She was smiling even more as she walked her way over to the shop, the slush sloshing beneath her feet. As she pulled the door open, she was hit by the overwhelmingly wonderful scents of coffee and all sorts of breakfast delights; cream pastries, cinnamon twists and bagels, among the other things baking. It was a shame, Emiline considered, that she got the same thing every day. Noticing Chris, one of her best friends, standing at the counter, she approached him.

"G`morning Chris," she said cheerily, adding a quick wink. She pretended to survey the menu. It wasn`t as if Chris didn`t know exactly what she`d order, she just liked messing with him sometimes. "Hmm, so many choices. I think... Nahh... Pft, you know what? Yeah, I deserve it. I think I`ll have a small French vanilla coffee with light cream and two sugars," she said jokingly, stating her usual order. She put down the money to pay for her order. She smiled brightly at Chris, hoping to make him laugh. She loved his laugh. She suddenly became annoyed with her hair; it had dried itself on the way to the shop in the heat of her truck, and was now beginning to fall in her face. Nothing irritated Emiline more than when her hair fell into her face. She pulled it loose from the elastic, and it fell in a black ringletted mass about her shoulders. As she combed it through with her fingers, she asked "So, how are you today?" She then pulled her hair up again, but just into a pony tail this time. The dark curls still hung behind her head and she smiled, awaiting her coffee and a hopefully cheerful response.

Chris finished getting his apron just as Emiline walked into the glass door of the coffee shop, and the bell that sat atop the doorway was immediately triggered. "Good morning Emiline." He flashed her a small smile, and listened to her order, as if she's never ordered it before. He knew this was what she usually got, but he decided to play along. "Small French vanilla coffee, light cream, two sugars? Coming right up Ms. Sanders." Chris turned in the direction of the coffee dispenser and grabbed a small-sized tyrofoam cup from the shelf. He pushed the button and poured in a hefty amount and released it. Next, he shifted the cup to the French vanilla cream dispenser and poured in the amount Emiline usually gets. Then, Chris grabbed the small sugar packets and let them out in the coffee, stirred it up a bit, and tightened the cap. After he was finished, he turned around to the front desk and saw her smiling brightly at him, and at that he laughed his usual laugh. He loved it when she made him laugh, it reminded him of their healthy friendship. He took the money off the counter and placed it into the cash register. "I'm doing good actually. I'm a bit tired, though. Still haven't had my coffee. You're the first, like always." He smiled at her again. "How about you?"

Emiline shrugged a bit, half smiling. "Eh, I`m the same as always. Happy enough. Content," she answered. She took a small sip of her coffee. Perfect, like always. "And you should have your coffee, we can`t have the world`s best coffee guy falling asleep at the register, can we?" she added. With that, she pulled a five out of her pocket, and stuck it in the top of his apron. "On me," she said with a happy wink. She checked her phone for the time. 9:02. She was two minutes behind schedule. Biting her lip a bit before taking another gulp of her coffee, she turned to Chris and smiled.

"I gotta run pretty soon. Sorry," she said, half smiling sheepishly. "But what are you doing later today? Maybe we could grab a bite to eat or catch a movie?" she asked, taking her coffee in hand and slowly backing out of the coffee shop. If she didn`t get moving, she`d be later for work that was already going to be. Then her boss would be all over her again, asking her why she was late, even if it was only by a few minutes. It wasn`t as if her boss did any work anyways, but that didn`t stop him from yelling at her. A lot of the men she worked with- She worked with all men, as being a mechanic was a rather masculine trade- said it was because she was a better mechanic than him. This she did not doubt, simply because she had never seen him start a job and then finish it. He had often begun to change the oil on a vehicle and decided that he "had better things to do"; Often meaning that Em would be left to pick up his slack afterwards.

Chris smiled at Emiline as she spoke to him. He yawned when she was finished. "I know, I know. Don't worry I'll have it. I can't live without coffee." He smiled again. At that second, she had put a five dollar bill his apron pocket. He looked down as she did it, and he was surprised. "You didn't have to--" Still smiling, he looked up to the ceiling for a second and sighed. "Ok, ok. Thank you very much, miss. That's very nice of you." He snatched the five dollars out of the pocket and opened the cash register, blinking quickly as the "ding" was carried out of it. He always jumps a little at the cash register, he probably won't ever get used to it.

Chris shut the cash register and looked up at Emiline, who looked like she needed to be somewhere. She was always a little bit late to work. He figured it was his fault most of the time. He usually talks to her for a few minutes after he makes the usual transaction. Chris then added, "Well, I get out of work at wound 1:30, maybe we can go catch a movie around then? Later? I don't know, I always forget when you get out of work." He gave her a quick half-smile and waited for a response.

Emiline laughed. "I get out at three. Movie for four?" she asked, still slowly backing out of the coffee shop. She looked at the time on her phone again. There was no way she could avoid confrontation with her boss now. She looked at Chris and bit her lip. "Chris, I`m sorry, but I really gotta go. Text me if you wanna. Don`t text me if you don`t wanna go. See ya later, maybe," she said with a quick smile. And with that, she backed out of the coffee shop and half-sprinted towards her truck.

She hopped into her truck and started it all in seemingly one fluid motion. She drove out of the parking lot and took a right, going back the way she just came. She had exactly twenty-two minutes to get to work, and she knew it would take her twenty-seven from here. She had a bad habit of timing everything, especially if it was in her daily schedule. But Em always loved a challenge, and so it was that with a smile she stepped on the gas and rushed into the city traffic.

Chris nodded his head slowly as she walked out the door and responded, "Sure, four is perfect. Don't worry, I'll text you. See you later, Em!" At that he waved quickly as she left and sprinted to her truck. He watched her speed off in the direction of her work, and barely noticed the man trying to take his order in front of him.

There was a short pause before the man said, "Excuse me?"

Chris looked up immediately and answered, "Oh, what? Sorry.. May I help you?"

His large brow and longish graying hair masked his forehead. The man had a heavy jaw line and small eyes that ultimately set out a glare of frustration towards Chris. He could see that the man had wiped away the irritation before saying, "No, that's fine. I'll have a large hot coffee, dark roast... with one cream and no sugar." His thick city accent twisted some words.

Christ nodded. "Sure, sir, coming right up." As he was filling the man's coffee, he peered out the front window in the direction where Emiline sped off towards her work. He was excited to see a movie with her later. He was always excited to see her.

Emiline arrived at work merely seconds before she was due to punch her time card. Her work friends all gave a slight chuckle as she sauntered in, completely unfazed by her timing. Another close call like that and she would be fired; this she knew entirely too well. She knew, also, that she would be hearing from her boss some time today. He always did love to harass her. Truth be told, however, she couldn't stand him either. He had always been egotistical and self-centered, and on top of that, he was always lazy. He always started things just to have others pick up his slack. He must've figured, Emiline considered, that because he owned the garage he believed he could do as he pleased. And to Emiline's regret, this was exactly the case. All she had to do was make it through this day, and she would be out of here and on to see a movie with Chris. "I can do this," she said quietly, happy enough.

At around eleven, Em's boss pulled in to the parking lot. His old truck made loud grounding noises against the icy tar in the parking lot. Emiline bit her tongue as he came in, smoking a cigarette. One flick of that in the direction of any of the multiple flammable materials in the garage would easily begin a horrible fire. He walked off into his office, only to reemerge moments later. He called Emiline into his office, proceeding to scold her about the importance of time-management and being to work on time. Though, Emiline noted, that he himself was a good two hours late for his own job. She listened intently throughout the whole thing, giving as little feedback as possible throughout the conversation. When her boss was satisfied, she returned to work, hoping the rest of the day would pass swiftly.

Chris continued to take most of the orders throughout the day. When his phone started vibrating, he looked at it after taking someone's order. It read, January 14th, 2011 - 12:03 p.m. The alarm must have went off for his break. He saw another employee running a little late and let him take over so he could sit down for a bit and finally have his coffee. "Chad, can you take over, it's my break." Chad nodded his head, moved swiftly behind the cash register and put his apron on. Chris quickly made his coffee and stepped outside into the harsh coldness of mid-winter. His head was killing him. After all, he had a massive hangover from a party he'd attended the night before. His mom didn't like it when he drank, but he did it anyways. Come on, he was twenty-two. He didn't have to listen to her anymore.
Chris slowly rubbed at his temples, begging for the pain to go away. Well, he was used to it by now, but he always hated hangovers. They were always so annoying. The cars speeding passed him made a screeching sound against the icy road that caused a deafening noise, when Chris almost dropped his coffee and realized that having his break inside the store would be a better idea.
