Rosie walked up the road, her eyes shut in smiling laughter at something Hiroyuki had just said. They had bought, or rather, Rosalba had bought, against the attempts of the young man, wonderful ingredients. Some chicken thighs, fresh herbs and vegetables, to make a delicious meal, in not to long.

They hadn't spent much time at the beach after their pinky swear, as she recalled she still had to make a thank you dinner. The time they hadn't spent at the beach, she'd spent in the shops, staying until she was basically forced out by the sweet people. She had ranted on for quite some time after nearly fainting at the sight of fish in a stall. However, the owner put them away, saying nobody would buy any at this hour anyways.

Finally on their way back, however, Hiroyuki's jacket was zipped up all the way, and she was carrying her beach bag and the grocery bag by her fingertips, letting the sleeves cover as much as possible. "Haha! My best scaring away a fisherman tale, was at another beach. I was in the middle of eating my lunch, and I saw this young guy fishing. I asked him nicely, then demanded for him to stop. He called me 'toots' and to go away. I knocked his rod from his hand with a smart chop to his wrist, and he looked at me like I was crazy," she paused, looking at him with the utmost seriousness. "Which, for the record, I'm not. Anyway though, I started chasing him, and if this other guy hadn't gotten in the way, I would have grabbed 'im. Instead, I threw a can that he had left on the beach, yelling, 'And take your trash with you!' It was incredible how I hit him right in the head. I think he swore at me as he got into his truck, but hey- no more fishing that day."

She beamed up at him, as if she had told him she fed a country for a year, not beaned a guy in the head with a can.

Hiroyuki held a thin plastic bag between his finger tips as they ambled back to the dojo. It had been at least a week since he visited the local grocer. There wasn't much reason to cook for one person. Rosalba re-counted a particularly epic event in her life defending fish from consumption. "You should be an animal actionist." He said, smiling, unknowingly saying the wrong term. "I've never done anything like that, but I did used to play baseball for fun." He grinned, swinging the bag loosely between his slim fingers. "I was the best hitter. Too bad I wasn't a great aim when I first tried. I sliced a ball right into the catcher's face." Hiroyuki chuckled, a slight blush on his face. "My dad made me practice archery for weeks to get better aim." He shrugged. "Too bad I was pretty awful. I shot it backwards."

Hiroyuki took Rosalba's hand as the crossed back to the sidewalk where the dojo was and released it as they walked up the steps. He glanced around, keeping an ear open for burglars, but heard nothing. The town had pretty much no criminal activity. No one had anything worth stealing.

She smiled at the wrong word usage, not correcting him like her sister would. She was no grammar slash spelling nazi. Rosie had thought about being an animal activist before, but had simply shrugged it off. "Nobody cares about fish, I mean, people eat them all the time, I'm not protecting a specific species or anything," she said, laughing lightly. "People usually think I'm crazy when they see me running after them at the beach. Or when I talk to them."

She laughed fairly hard at the baseball story as they walked back up to the dojo. "Haha! That's amazing! I have pretty good aim, but I'd have to be a pinch hitter. I can't run for anything. Look at these little legs!" she complained, sticking one of her short legs out, hopping along on one foot, nearly over balancing.

She slipped her shoes off as they walked into the dojo, putting her slippers back on, and dropping her beach bag on the floor, taking the food that she'd stuck into it out. "So," she beamed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Where's the kitchen? Are you ready to have your taste-buds vacation in paradise?"

She giggled at her own silliness, swinging at the waist so her skirt twirled around from side to side.

"Ah, the kitchen's down the hall, c'mon," Hiroyuki hopped out of his boots and helped Rosalba out of his jacket, slinging it on the coat hanger. His feet pounded against the waxed floors as he headed through the long corridor and slid open a lattice screen door made of light oak. The paper scraped against the other door and he bowed by the entrance, gesturing a hand for Rosalba to enter.

Inside the room was a old-fashioned stove with four burners, most of which had scorch marks and nicks. The oven was attached below, a gray towel limped upon the handle, and pot holders were scattered on the adjacent counters. All of the cabinets had a seventy's style and dull colored knobs. A lonely kitchen table with several unmatched chairs bunched around it was by a large picture window, which looked out to a koi pond and naked cherry blossom trees. It seemed like the kitchen was more of a time machine. The newest thing in the room would probably be Rosalba.

Padding softly into the kitchen, instead of her usually heavy-stepping, Rosalba smiled, putting the bags on the table, and wrapping her arms around herself. "It feels so warm, so much like a home. A little like my parents' house, and the old stove before Poppy blew it up..." she said softly, almost a glaze over her eyes as she ran her fingers over the little nicks and scorches on the stove.

The beautiful view was all but lost on her as she took in the kitchen. The mismatched chairs so close at the table. The true sign of a loving family was how often they ate together. At least to Rosie. And the chairs showed they must, a lot.

Snapping out of her daze, she clapped her hands in front of her chest, her eyes now sparkling. "Well," she began, slowly before she started to motor. "We'll make salt grilled chicken, and I'm going to assume you have some sake, and of course salt. But I will need, first a plate or shallow bowl, then a cooking pan. Do you have a rice cooker? Well, if you don't you probably already know how to make rice. I will need a big salad bowl, and a chopping board. Do you have salad dressing? Maybe a miso one? Or some miso paste? I think I bought some actually... Oh! And a knife, preferably two, one large, one small to medium."

She finished and beamed up at him. While she had been yammering on, she'd moved the bags to the counter and started emptying them, throwing her headdress back onto the table. From some secret compartment inside, she'd pulled out a waist apron and a hair-tie, having tied her two ponytails together and the crisp bow at her back.

She held her hand out for the bag in his hand, containing the lettuce and a few tomatoes, and the miso paste, if she'd bought any.

Hiroyuki surrendered the parcel to Rosalba, trying to recall all the things she had listed. He tilted his head and sucked in his lips, then arched an eyebrow. Ah, when was the last time I stocked up on food for myself...? The Scizor frowned. "Sake's actually not kept in the house. Dad always said a fighter than drinks is only a brawler." Hiroyuki pressed a knuckle to his cheek and sighed. "I don't like alcohol very much," he confessed with a shrug. "We have all those other things, though...though I don't know what's what. I just use the rice cooker and eat that usually." Hiroyuki sat in one of the mismatched chairs, a creaking wooden one bearing chipped paint. "I'm sorry I'm not that much help..."

After what he said about alcohol, she tilted her head in confusion for a second, then started laughing. "Oh! I didn't mean for drinking! You pour a little bit into a shallow dish with the meat, soak it for a little, put the salt on, wait a little longer, and then drain the sake away," she explained, grabbing the miso paste out of the bag. "Aha! Thought I bought some. But if you have the dressing, I won't bother making it. Maybe some soup?"

With that, she began flitting around the kitchen, piling vegetables beside the sink, taking out the chopping board and locating knives in a drawer after a little searching. She paused, her hands on her hips, looking out the window in deep thought. "To make salt grilled chicken without the sake..." she pondered aloud before shaking her head.

"Hiroyuki," she said, a bit suddenly, pointing at him, eyes bright. "Can you start by washing the vegetables? They looked clean, but I always wash just in case. I am going to go and either buy a small bottle from somewhere, or borrow half a cup from someone," she instructed, already on her way out the door.

A small town like this? Has to be sake somewhere.

As soon as Rosalba left the room, Hiroyuki's eyes scrunched up and he looked toward the ceiling. Okay, she said no drinking sake...salad dressing....chicken....uh.... Hiroyuki slipped his hand under his chin and rubbed it back and forth. The man's eyes were shut, his lips trying to recite what the pink chef had said. ...ah, what had she said... The young man walked around the room and stared at the plastic bags. The pungent smell of soil and decaying leaves permeated the leaves, the moisture clinging to the walls like a child to a mother. Only the hushed rustle of grass could be heard outside. Without Rosalba, the house had fallen silent.

"Ah...I was supposed to..." Hiroyuki muttered, his accent cutting the noiselss scene. The discarded bag of vegetables caught his eye suddenly. "Oh! Clean, right." The Scizor scooped up the vegetables and plopped them into a colander. As the water ran, he switched on a static-y old radio with a twisted antenna. There was only one station: evening news.

"...oh, that's wonderful to hear, Maria. I'm sure we'll be through this in no time." A gruff man's voice boomed out of the speakers.

"Now onto our top story," a woman was speaking now, her voice was nasal and high. "There has been a serial murderer around rural cities. He tells young women that he is lost and where he can get directions, then murders them once they are alone-"

Hiroyuki suddenly froze, his head swimming with terror. A flash of red and black, Hiroyuki was out of the kitchen, the faucet still running and palms still dripping. He grabbed his belt and slung a plain black scabbard into his hip. The screen door clattered open. Wind snapped against his face. Already the sun had fallen and the moon was peering between hazy gray masses that hung in the sky. Hiroyuki shut the door and quickly hopped out of the dojo and bolted down the steps. When he reached the top of the steps she was nowhere to be seen.

Oh no, oh no, there's a creepy crawler 'round and I don't know where she went! Hiroyuki sweat bullets, frowning.

Rosie had forgotten to grab Hiro's jacket, and on her way to town, to look for the small bottle, which would be easier than knocking on doors and asking, was already rubbing her arms and shivering. "I...hate the cold," she muttered, easily crossing where the bikes had been before.

Clouds clinging to the moon made it a tad difficult to see as she made her way to her first shop. A fish shop, which, as much as she wanted the sake, was to her delight closed. Nodding smugly at the store, she walked to the next one, and down the small strip. Most places had closed to have dinner with their families, and the ones that were open had no sake. The last shop keeper, the little old flower shop woman, pointed her in a direction where a small cluster of houses were. "Thank you!" Rosie called over her shoulder, beaming at the woman, who smiled wrinkly back before shutting her door.

After a few houses, a slightly elderly man answered, and bequeathed on her a small container of sake, explaining it was the best for cooking with. Happily successful with her quest, she marched, fairly quickly back towards Hiroyuki's.

Pausing for a moment at the corner, someone called out, "Miss? Excuse me, Miss!"

Turning her head, she saw a man coming towards her, hands rubbing together in the cold. He was tall, probably a little shorter than Hiroyuki, she thought as he made his way over, the slight light from a distant shop making her able to see his light beard, and large, dark eyes. "I'm kind of lost, could you help me?" he asked, smiling a little sheepishly.

Rosie laughed, nodding her head. I was lost a little bit ago too. I missed the last bus because of it, actual-"

"Oh really? I have a car, and you look a little chilly. Would you like to come show me on the map?" he asked again, interrupting her.

Something was feeling a little off, but after the time she hit a man who was not actually a creep, it had taken some convincing.

Hiroyuki bolted across the white stripes, without glancing once to either side. It was night. The roads would be empty. He could feel the cold slice into the fabric of his jacket with every step. The pavement pounded beneath his boots, his belt jolting to and fro, the sword gripped tightly in his white fist. Right. Left. Down. Left. A voice. The swordsman gripped his blade steadily. Everything was tingling. Each breath that escaped his lips burned the chapped edges and the heave of his chest against the shirt, he could feel the fabric flex and contour with every rise and fall. His golden eyes slipped to the corner of its socket and caught sight of a man, stooping and shivering near a pink girl with pig tails. The sword slipped out of the scabbard. Roise...

Tight, Hiroyuki pressed his back to the wall he hid behind. The man's voice was tense, but fearful. His eyes peered over the end of the wall, his stance was all wrong. Stooping, his hands together, the way his head awkwardly shifted, and the thick clothing he wore; it didn't add up. Autumn had certainly made its presence known, but no one wore that many layers without hiding something. A face. An item. Anything. The man suddenly interrupted Rosalba with sudden confidence. A lost man never has a map...or a car. Swish. The blade was out and Hiroyuki was behind Rosalba, he stood in the traditional stance of samurai fighting, with his sword hidden from behind, his body narrow in the dim light. The only thing that could be seen was that he was a normal man wearing a jacket and pants, not a threat in sight.

"Rosie," Hiroyuki said, his voice pleasant and calm, "I've been looking for you. Did you get what you needed?" He chuckled, his smile more of a smirk and his unusually hawk-like. "It's not good to stay out at night. You never know who's out here---"

Bang. One shot and Hiroyuki crouched, keeping his sword out of sight. He performed an effortless split and knocked the man down, the gun flew in the air and with one swift arm, the gun was in half. It laid on the ground, useless. The blade went back in the sheath. As the man cursed and tried to get back on his feet, Hiroyuki seized him up and slammed him into a navy blue sedan, the car alarm fired. "Rosie, get to that phone booth and call the police!" The man struggled underneath Hiroyuki, but the crimson-haired man didn't budge. "This guy's suspicious-" He grunted as the man tried to rise. "No one shoots a guy with pleasantries!"

When Hiroyuki rushed by, everything seemed to happen in a blur. She stood, a confused look on her face, when he told her to call the police.

Gaining her senses back, her little nostrils flared with disgust. Whoever this man was, he was not good. He had been going to harm her, and had tried to shoot Hiro. Rosalba may not have known him very long, but still considered him a friend. And hurting friends...that was never ok.

"I'll call them in a second, Hiroyuki," she said calmly, smiling slightly as she put down her container and strode up to the two men. Her white eyes were hard, her mouth in a firm line. It had been a long time since she had used, or even seen this expression.

When she spoke, her light, cheery voice was heavy, having dropped a half tone in anger. "You see, Mister Whoever, I may seem little, seem like a good idea for you take for whatever strange games your psychotic mind has spit out. But the thing with choosing random victims, is you never know their history," she said evenly, looking him straight in the eyes.

He stared back, sneering, his eyes filled with loathing, but a mad laughter as well, as if it didn't matter, he'd get away. Or get another victim. He opened his mouth, bright teeth flashing. Before he could speak, Rosalba continued, her voice that same calm, level, deeper. "You couldn't possibly know that I grew up in a fairly rough area. That my two best friends fought, one boxed, one did mixed martial arts. And I helped both of them. Don't think for one second you could have taken me, gun or no gun, and you will never," she paused, a slight pause with a glare that could melt the very car behind him, to get the full gravity behind her words. "Hurt anyone ever again."

With that final statement, she brought her arm up and across her body, using the full weight of herself in that one blow, along his face with a resounding crack from his jaw. He went limp against the pressure of the man holding him against the car, and she rubbed her forearm near her elbow. She could still hear both Mac and Jimmy telling her it was the hardest part to hit anyone with.

She shook a little bit, the adrenaline buzzing around her system, and slumped against the car herself, lowering to the ground. Going back to the instruction she'd received, she laughed lightly, nervously, and looked up at Hiroyuki. "S-Sorry, I'll have to wai...wait a minute before I can get over to the phone," she said, her voice wobbling slightly.

Hiroyuki's eyebrows flew up. Rosalba had quite an arm for beating people up. He glanced at the perpetrator with hawk eyes. The man's nose oozed sanguinary fluid. His nose twitched. "I'd hop on that." Hiroyuki said, smiling at her. "It's good to know that you can handle yourself." He shifted his feet. "I'm sorry for coming out like that...it's not very...very normal." The man shrugged, his goofy grin restored. "I was doing what you asked and oh..." he gasped. "I left the vegetables in the sink! I'm so sorry! Uh, they're probably ruined..." Hiroyuki blushed, nearly forgetting the situation.

Rosalba laughed, the adrenaline shake wearing off mostly. She stood up, smiling and patted Hiroyuki's cheek. "A white knight is always appreciated, and I don't think knocking a guy out is all that normal either," she giggled, rubbing her elbow a little. "And I'm sure the vegetables would be fine. I'll go call the police now."

She started walking away, though she turned on her heel to continue walking backwards, she said, "That was a very brave thing Hiroyuki, you didn't know I could defend myself, but you still ran out to make sure I would be ok."

Turning back, she smacked into the payphone with her nose, and rubbed it while she dialed the police. They seemed very surprised that the perpetrator had been subdued, and in such a strange fashion, they said they'd be over as soon as they could.

Relaying the message to Hiroyuki, she leaned on the car, looking up at the sky. "I wish it wasn't so cloudy. I haven't seen stars since the last time I went camping," she stated, with a slightly sad smile.

Hiroyuki grunted, pushing up the unconscious man, Rosalba was rather chipper for someone who was mad only a fe moments ago. He chuckled. What a trooper, that's what dad would say. He heard Rosalba call the cops. "Ah, I'm still very sorry. I get worried, a bit much sometimes." He rolled his shoulders, still pinning down the stranger. "I wouldn't say brave. I'd say paranoid." He let out a little laugh. "Ah, you go camping? That sounds fun." Hiroyuki tried to lean on the car, too, but the man let out a sorry moan making him lurch back.
