I am the Titan Senshi of Stars and Destiny! Protector of the innocent! And invincible! SAILOR CRONUS!!
You know, I've been wondering something. Tsukino Usagi and Chiba Mamoru get married, start Crystal Tokyo, and are coronated under the names Serenity and Endymion.
But what's their family name now? Tsukino? Or Chiba?

It goes by Chiba since Usagi (a.k.a. Neo-Queen Serenity) married Mamoru and took his last name before she became the future queen of Crystal Tokyo.

I think they went with Tsukino, because in the anime and manga when Chibiusa fell out of the sky, she said her name was Usagi Tsukino.

I would assume Chiba would be their last name since Usagi and Mamoru married. It's common in both Asian and English-speaking cultures for the wife to adopt the husband's last name.
If you really want to get into it you could assume that Usagi's name would be Usagi Tsukino Chiba. Keeping the maiden name and simply taking on the husband's last name is also common practice.
Since Chibiusa went to the past she adopted Tsukino with reason:
She decided to live with the Tsukino family, so adopted their last name to form a civilian identity. That's her mother's maiden name, and it's not uncommon for children to wear their mother's maiden name either. If she called herself "Chiba" she would have to live with Mamoru BUT since she lives with the Tsukino family this would be...um...strange to say the least. Especially taking into consideration that Serena was only 16 at the end of the series, she was probably only 15 when Rini came into the picture, this would spread rumors of a teenage, unwed pregnancy and the Scouts already had enough trouble with that. In the past her parents aren't married, so even by that standpoint it makes more sense to adopt Tsukino as a last name. She wants to keep her past identity separate from her future one. Time travel is supposed to be a forbidden thing!
For all those reasons and more their future name should be "Chiba" while keeping "Tsukino" for the females in the past.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... but I'm still not 100% sure. ^^;
If anyone has a solid reference, please let me know.

@ Dragon: You make some good points, and they all make sense, but I don't think Rini actually planned for all this to happen. She took the crystal, took the key, and went into the past to find Sailor Moon so she could save her mother. I'm sure she had the thought that Sailor Moon would just bing herself over there and save the day in one move, so she probably didn't plan as far ahead.
Taking her mother's name might also have brought a sense of comfort to her, sort of a way to keep her mother with her wherever she went.

It's Tsukino.
In Japan, a woman can choose to keep her maiden name. But also in the case of that they're royalty and Neo-Queen Serenity is the queen regnant of the world, chances are the whole family would take on her name and not the king's.

wikimoon.org has them listed officially as King Endymion, Queen Serenity, and Princess Lady Serenity with no attached last names.

dragon_1212xp she was probably only 15 when Rini came into the picture Actually, she was still 14. She turned 15 in episode 101, which is in season 3.

Even still, it's not a question of Japanese tradition. It's a question of what Naoko Takeuchi decided, which is really the heart of what I'm trying to get at here. XD

Enemies beware-- for your fate is sealed! Naoko Takeuchi didn't give them a family name though, or at least none that I can find, so we have to fall on culture. Naoko Takeuchi didn't really ever focus on details like this, that's what crazy fan girls like us are for... ninja

*Sigh.* I guess we'll just have to go with that...
I wonder if she ever mentioned it outside of her manga? Like in an interview or something...

Enemies beware-- for your fate is sealed! I'll look if you want, but if you do happen to come across interviews with Naoko Takeuchi question the authenticity of them. Apparently there are a lot of bogus interviews that state things that are completely false.
