hey there,
i have a question that i'm not sure about
if one of your friends always ask you "tell me if i say anything in chinese" and says "gfhjoijgi jghrughiojg fhgh" (crap they just made up)

is that racist?

Well... racism in and of itself has many different definitions.

Historically, it has been defined as the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation. Sometimes racism means beliefs, practices, and institutions that discriminate against people based on their perceived or ascribed race. That said, it remains a subjective concept.

So based on your own definition and how you feel when he/she interacts with you... only you can decided if he/she is indeed a racist. cool

I dunno... but I hate when people do that! Most of time when non- Chinese people try to mock the Chinese language, the go "Ching chong tong" all that other stuff. It's very annoying... but racist? I'm not sure.

Nah... I wouldn't call that racism. They didn't say anything to offend the Chinese. But I would call that stupidity of course. What kind of a dumb person would go up to another person of a different ethnic background and say "What does this mean?" and make up their own language... rolleyes

Only the really stupid non-Asian people, such as dumb yanks, skips and poms i.e white guys would actually care to mock the chinese, let alone any asian language as Japanese, Viet, Korean and such are all quite similar to Chinese. With China fast becoming the world's dominant economic force, every intelligent person person knows that it will be very useful to at least have an understanding, if not an ability to speak Chinese.
At my old school where I was one of the only few Chinese a lot of guys did to the whole "ching chong thing".

To answer that, not even definitively, what has been your friend's intent?

If she makes stuff up often trying to imitate it out of appreciation or fascination with the Chinese language, I think it's the start of good intentions. ...Therefore not-racist. I once heard that imitation is one of the highest forms of flattery.

However, if she does that only to annoy you or to mock the Chinese language, then that is racist. Because in that scenario, your friend's mockery of the Chinese language shows that she is someone who insults other cultures unfamiliar to herself. And that she is oblivious to outside cultures and unable to deal with it intelligently.

I think he's dissing you and the chinese language but I won't consider it as racism just because I expect something more "extreme." However, that is debatable because anything can be racist including a simple comment like "I like his black skin" that can be considered racist.

I wouldn't say that it's racist. More like them making complete idiots of themselves. It DOES get annoying though... scream

It's not really racist, but if your friend did that then you've got to ask yourself - "Is this really how a friend would treat me?"
