When Yanagi's egg hatched, tucked away in a hidden thicket, a large salamander-like creature he came to call Frill had been the only living creature in the area. Frill had nudged an unidentifiable bit of meat towards the newborn, who ate it voraciously after only a cursory sniff. Nagi was still not sure if his little friend had brought the meat for him, somehow knowing when he would hatch, or if he had it for some other reason. It hadn't been for his own consumption, as Frill was entirely an herbivore.
From that moment on the Quetzil had adopted the little colt. While Nagi learned to stand, and then walk, Frill brought daily offerings of meat. The few times the little creature brought berries or other plant parts, he wrinkled his nose and refused to touch them, so Frill soon stopped. Some of the meat would have been identifiable, had Nagi ever seen another creature. Others were obviously part of a larger animal, but were otherwise a mystery. Once he had better control of his limbs, Frill began bringing back injured, and then healthy small prey for him to practice on. Nagi was clumsy, especially in the confined space of his thicket, and Frill often had to catch the prey himself as it darted somewhere Nagi was unable to reach, and bring it back for the little colt to try again.
As his coordination improved, Nagi began to leave the thicket. The increased space allowed him more freedom of movement, and his hunting skills increased quickly, until the meat Frill brought him was an offering of friendship, rather than a necessity.
Adolescence (WIP)
Nagi continued to grow, the juvenile stump on his forehead lengthening into a magnificent horn and his body filling out, especially in the chest. His mane and tail also grew, leafy tendrils twined with emerald green hair. He had a happy, if simple existence. Frill was his only friend, but he was content. Then, one day, while he lay in wait for dinner, he heard a sound he had never heard before. It sounded oddly familiar, and it almost seemed that if he just listened hard enough, he would be able to understand it. Little did he know it was actually his native tongue, which he had not heard since he was still in the egg. That early exposure had planted the foundation for language in his brain, but having only Frill to interact with for his entire life since had not built much on that foundation. Between body language, tone, and Nagi's clumsy but workable imitation of Frill's sounds, they could communicate basic concepts rather well.
