User ImageGutu'bufuu was on her way back to her cubs after having feasted only a zebra only an hour earlier. She did not like leaving her children for too long, but with her sons still being rather young and unable to assist her with hunting it was much safer for her to leave them at the den she had scent-marked and stocked with bedding in a rocky outcropping. It also made it harder for the boys to try and get out on their own, taking some stress off the mother's mind.

"So bloated," She murmured to herself as she breathed in heavily and caught a whiff of something out of the ordinary. There was something nearby and it nagged at Gutu to go check it out.

Taking another whiff in the air, Gutu stalked after the scent that teased her in the air. It only took minutes for her to stumble upon the den of another feline and a little blue cheetah playing around outside the front of it. Gutu's head quirked to the side for a moment. He didn't look like one of her children, but she would never know unless she inspected him up close.

Gutu stood up straight and quietly walked her way towards him. Children always seemed less apprehensive if they could see you beforehand.

User ImageHop! Hop! Ulwazi was a grasshopper. Hop! Hop!

He stopped to catch his breath, keeping his belly low to the ground as grasshoppers do. Panting, chin on the ground, blue eyes swiviling about his surroundings, Ulwazi imagined that he was small. Blades of grass towered above him like trees when, suddenly, a giant came lumbering through.

Ulwazi gasped in fright at the black lioness. Any other cub might have run back to the den at this point, but Ulwazi's awe at meeting this new creature froze him in place more surely than the deepest fear. He lifted his head and stared at her with a wide open mouth. She was obviously a feline like him, yet she was bigger than the biggest cheetah he ever saw and her legs were huge like tree trunks. He sat up hastily, for he was suddenly afraid of looking too small.

They stared at one another for a second or two. For Ulwazi it was hard to say how much time passed. However, he quickly came to the conclusion that if she intended to harm him she could have done it by now. "H-hello," he called a bit nervously. "Are you lost?"

Maybe she wanted directions to somewhere. His mother might be able to help with that. Another cub might have had the common sense to get back in his mother's den, but Ulwazi was much more interested in finding out what this amazing feline wanted.

Gutu stopped when she heard the cubs gasp, knowing she had been spotted by the little blue thing. She sat there and waited for him to approach her. It was her safest bet at the moment since he may call for his mother and though it was only a cheetah, Gutu did not want to expell her energy so quickly. She was getting up in age and so she didn't have the same stamina as she did only months or a year prior.

It didn't take long for the cub's curiosity to get the better of him, calling out to Gutu with a hello and asking if she was lost. He seemed like a sweet little boy, his mother must be proud to have given birth to someone so sweet. She smiled to him the best she could, because even her smiles seemed menacing due to her markings. Gutu only hoped her sweet voice would ease the cub.

"I am not lost," She said, quirking her head to the side, "I am on my way back to my sons and noticed you there. You play as they play. I thought it was cute. What is your name, young one?"

Her markings did not frighten Ulwazi. She looked strange, which only made him more curious. He smiled in return. "My name is Ulwazi! Some people call me Wazi for short, because it's fun to say. Waaaaaaaaazi!" He giggled. "What's your name?"

He stayed were he was sitting, on a large patch of dry earth that extended several feet around the mouth of his mother's den, which was essentially a pile of rocks with a couple of cheetahs in the center. The rocks hid them well. There was a good deal of shade under there, great for getting out of the sun, but Ulwazi's brother and sister were still fast asleep. Much like Gutu, Ulwazi's mother had to leave her cubs alone to go hunting.

"I was named Gutu'bufuu, but I just go by Gutu." Gutu said with a smile, deciding to approach the little cheetah cub at a slow pace as to not make him uncomfortable or startle him.

"Wazi is a very fun name, isn't it? My boys have fun names like that. They're called Bawa and Haamoni. They're about your age," She said, seating herself several feet away from him, her tail flicking idly back and forth.

He was a cute little thing with his blue and blue-green coat. He had such interesting markings on him that swirled about like creeping, twisted branches and his little dots reminded her of berries. She tilted her head again, and looked about briefly. Was his mother single mother as well? She didn't see a father anywhere around. Perhaps he didn't know him.

"Where is your Dad?" Gutu asked.

"He's gone somewhere. Mom says he came to stay with her for a while and after he left she got pregnant with us. I tried to get her to tell me more but she said wait till you're older. She's hunting right now. I'm supposed to be with my brother and sister but they kicked me out 'cause I wriggled too much."

He sighed. What was he supposed to do? His brain wouldn't shut up and the ground was uncomfortable and he felt so hungry. Playing grasshopper took his mind off food for a while. Now that he was sitting still his stomach was starting to hurt again. "I'm soooooooo hungry," he complained, flopping onto his belly.

"Well that's not very nice, now is it? Your brother and sister should be nicer to you. You might be the only brother they'll ever have," Gutu said cautiously, looking about for his mother. She could be back at anytime, but what if she never came back? He'd be left all by himself and would starve to death, the poor thing. Gutu couldn't allow that to happen to anyone.

"I have food," Gutu said soothingly, sitting in front of the little cheetah cub with a small frown on her face at his hungry state. "It's not far from here, we can go grab it together and bring it back to your siblings, hmnn? That way you won't be as hungry as you wait for a proper meal to arrive."

Already in Gutu's mind the focus was beginning to shift. He was a hungry baby and she needed to feed him. He was her hungry baby and she needed to feed him, otherwise she wasn't a good mother. She needed to feed her hungry baby and bring him back to his siblings, who were also hungry.

Ulwazi made a noise of agreement. Yes, his brother and sister should be nicer to him. After all, he was the only Ulwazi they would ever have! Deep down he knew they didn't mean to be a pain and he didn't resent them for it, for Ulwazi possessed not a hateful bone in his body, but sometimes it felt like they were just being annoying for the sake of being annoying.

At the mention of food Ulwazi's eyes popped open and he lifted his head, staring at her with eyes like questions. A bad feeling prickled at the base of his neck. Mom might be mad if he went off with a stranger. Then again, Gutu didn't seem like a stranger. Gutu was a mommy too and Ulwazi reasoned that she would understand how much he meant to his mother and would not harm him. Her promise to bring food back to his brother and sister put his doubts to rest. He got back to his feet with a big smile. "Okay! Thank you miss Gutu!"

"It's no problem, little one. No cubby should be hungry, besides, my children would be so upset with me if I didn't help little ones like them," Gutu said with a smile as she began to slowly usher the cheetah cub away with her.

Little did he know this would be the last time he'd ever see his siblings, ever see his mother or see the familiarity of his den again. He would soon be her child and have himself a new set of siblings. Two energetic and excessively happy leopons, colorful as Ulwazi was, to play with while he was little.

Gutu hadn't planned to take Ulwazi with her, and the notion that he might be one of her missing children hadn't crossed her mind until she was leading him away towards the food she had spoken about. The farther they began to wander out of his den's range, the less it smelled like his mother and the more she began to believe she was ushering back one of her own.

Ulwazi bounded after her. Once he caught up to her he found it easy to keep pace, for Gutu was kind enough to remember his stubby legs. All the way he kept her talking. What's it like being a lion? Do you come from a pride? How come your eyes are black? What are those funny markings on your butt? Are your cubs nice? Can I play with them? He went on and on, too absorbed with his new friend to notice where they were going.

It was only later, after playing with Gutu's funny looking cubs, that he realized he couldn't go home anymore.
