The Kingdom of Roanin has always been ruled by their monarchs. Generations upon generations of kings and queens have passed down laws, fair or cruel, upon their mostly loyal subjects. Within the government, the House of Lords exists as a group of advisors with the power to interpret the laws handed down by the monarch. Of themselves, they may not impose or abolish laws, but they are meant to council the king or queen on the current needs of the general populace. In times when the heir has not been named or is not apparent, they are charged with finding the next heir within the royal line. Usually, this is no problem, as the house of Corvin, the royal line, is a vital line that generally has no trouble producing children. In fact, they have the tendency to breed like rabbits, generally having litters of children of various ages shrieking through the palace.

But not always. There was a time, long, long ago, when the royal line nearly perished. In the year of 1487 After Founding in the reign of King Amande Corvin, the royal family was nearly wiped out. In a single night, two-thirds of Roanin’s nobles were assassinated, wiped from the face of history. Fifteen men bearing the insignia of the army of the neighbouring kingdom, Symian, and armed with weapons known to exclusively be used by their soldiers, invaded Airiving, the capital of Roanin. During the night, the king and all his immediate heirs were slaughtered. The following morning, an emergency council of the most important lords and ladies and all the heads of state was convened to determine who the next heir would be with the royal line practically wiped out. Brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews: everyone of age, and most of those who had not yet reached the age of crowning, had been killed in the night, and finally the council realized that there were only two possible candidates left for the throne. Two twin girls, aged 5 years old, had survived the purge. Because they were too young to take the throne, the council immediately decided to hide them away somewhere deep within the castle to prevent them from becoming the next casualties.

Fortunately for the girls, one of the lords privy to the council’s decision was still loyal to the girls’ now deceased parents and knew that they would have been horrified at this cavalier treatment of the girls who had been their whole life and world. He slipped out early from the council and warned the girls’ caretakers, allowing them enough time to take the girls and those followers still loyal to the family to escape just before the council came. The group was attacked as they escaped, the council unwilling to allow their last hope to leave, and the enemy spies attempting to kill the last remaining heirs to the throne. In the midst of the fray, three knights, two mages, and the twins’ nursemaid managed to escape unnoticed with the children as the remnants of the house of Dio distracted the army to allow them to retreat.

The much smaller group fled westward, knowing that the nursemaid’s family would welcome them in the small town of Cambria, near the border to the neutral trading country, Zurin, where they could easily escape to safety if it should become necessary.

The two children, old enough to remember their past lives, but too young to understand what had ended them, were trained and protected by the men and women who had saved them. The elder, having discovered a strong latent talent of magic, learned the various white magics in addition to lessons in lady-like behaviour, rhetoric, and court intrigue. The younger, dressed as a boy and hiding her gender, learned the ways of the knights, hunting, swordplay, and martial arts. Nobody in the town was told their true identities, only that they were a brother and sister from the capital who had been orphaned in the fighting, so their retainers trained them in secret, going out of their ways to prevent any from discovering the treasures hidden away.

Twelve years after the attack, the two girls must venture out into the world once more to find the truth of what has occurred and save their country from destroying itself.

CHARACTER LIST

Kieve Eir (healer) skyblue - One of the magicians who escapes with the twins during the fight to escape the castle. He was young at the time of their escape, barely 25, but especially loyal to the employers who acted as patrons throughout his training. With Catrin, he trains Allete in White magic, focusing on her healing ability.

Catrin Nye (magician) indigo - The other magician who escapes with the twins during the fight to escape the castle, she was fully trained as a battle support mage, and imparts her knowledge to Allete.

Yvette Bern (nursemaid) palevioletred - One of the twins' nursemaids from their youth. Yvette was the one who brought the group to Cambria, asking her parents to open their home to the bedraggled group of refugees. She was 20 at the time of the attack.

Joran Dirkman (Master of Arms for the House of Dio) firebrick - Escaped with the girls to guard their group. Over the years he has carefully structured Kyla's lessons in weaponry and horsemanship as well as hand-to-hand combat. Forty-one when they fled the castle, Joran is now over fifty.

Kieran Skye (Knight-in-training, guard in service to the House of Dio) mediumseagreen - Kieran, though common-born, was recognized as a prodigy at a young age. Sent to the capital to live with his Aunt (who served the House of Dio as a maid), Kieran continued to train for his knighthood. First a stable hand, soon employed as a guard, Kieran never received a knighting, as they left before he had planned to present himself to the general. Kieran was fifteen on the night of the attacks. The youngest of the Crown's soldiers were sixteen in times of peace when forced conscription was not necessary. The youngest recorded knight in the history of Roanin was seventeen.

Rebecca Sarran (Knight) darkorange - Captain of the Archers' East Unit for the last two years of her service to the Royal House of Corvin, Rebecca fled with the girls at the age of twenty-nine. She had spent two years in her early twenties as part of the Queen's Veils, an elite group skilled in martial arts. Rebecca is now forty-one.

Kieve Eir - Over the years Kieve has treated a wide assortment of Kyla's hurts. Due to this propensity for injury, he has also taught her basic first aid. Their relationship is one of trust.
Catrin Nye - Catrin has shared her knowledge of battle tactics and strategy with Kyla. She also discussed some methods of coping with magic during a fight, for a non-user such as herself. Kyla sees Catrin as a very wise and interesting person, though since she spent most of her time teaching Allete, they never became very close.
Yvette Bern - Any trouble would always earn Kyla a scolding from Yvette, but she always offered caring arms and listening ears. Yvette was much like an older sister or cousin to Kyla, and with her Kyla felt a sense of being at home.
Joran Dirkman - Joran was tough on Kyla from the beginning. His lessons in physical training took up the majority of her time, and as soon as she seemed to improve in one area, a new challenge was ready in place. With Kieran, Joran taught Kyla the ways of acting as a man, in everyday life, as well as the etiquette used in formal functions of the court. Joran cares about the girls deeply, and feels a special sense of pride in Kyla's accomplishments from their lessons. He is a bit like an uncle to Kyla: an authority figure, a teacher, a caretaker, a dutiful guardian, yet never a father. Joran is not one to often share emotions vocally.
Kieran Skye - Kieran was often a sparring partner for Kyla during her training. He also taught Kyla most about how to blend in as a boy, and how to act as a gentleman at court. Kieran is as a close older brother to Kyla.
Rebecca Sarran - Rebecca and Kyla share a love for action and are both rather tomboyish. However, while Kyla loves feasts and dancing, Rebecca prefers to sit at a corner table talking and sharing food and drink. (Though this may be because Kyla gets to act as a boy during such festivities). Rebecca taught Kyla the subtleties in physical movement and trained her intuition and reflexes carefully. Rebecca and Kyla are not only student-and-pupil, but close friends, despite the sizable age difference.
