It wasn't that he was above helping out around the Weyr, especially in times of need. Far from it. Mallyc was nearly always willing to lend a hand carrying things or shifting someone from one weyr to another or helping to repair a roof or cut timber or that sort of thing.
But when he'd asked today he'd been pointed toward storage and stacks of scrolls, dust and who knew whether there were crawlers in the nooks or nests of trundlebugs. And light by glow was not the same as the light of the sun.
But he went. He pulled on a shirt and he went to the records room, found a stool and sat, then reached for a scroll. "Sharding way to spend a nice day, isn't it?"

The only other person in the record room that day was Balt. This was his second time volunteering in the record room, but this time he was working alone. He had a small pile of scrolls laid stacked in a neat pile on the table in front of him and was nose deep into an old parchment when Mal suddenly spoke. Balt finished the sentence he was on and looked up.
He shrugged. "Better this than being on your hands and knees in the dirt."

Ah. So not someone who enjoyed fresh air and sunshine. Mal bit back a smile and shoved a hand through his hair, then dug in a pocket for the scrap of leather he used to tie it back. No point having hair in his eyes when he had to read things.
"There's nothing wrong with having dirt under your nails," he opined. "Means you've got something to show for a good hard day's work."

Balt's eyes darted across the page. He chewed on his nails, pondering. This could be useful. He rolled up the scroll, proud of his good fortune, and placed it apart from the others before turning to look at the new arrival. Ah, so it was Mallyc, just as he thought. Balt smirked haughtily and propped his arm on the back of his chair. "Well I've already done my fair share. I just wash my hands after I'm done. Shouldn't you be fixing a stool or something?"

It wasn't the first time someone had seen fit to make a comment about crafting. Mal expected it from some of the riders he'd met already. On a first meeting? It didn't usually happen, but he knew that some people had opinions about everything.
He reached for a scroll. "Probably," he agreed as he unrolled it. "Gets hard to remember which are done until some sits their fat backside on one and it collapses." He gave Balt's seat a point look, then read.

Balt laughed. If anyone was going to break a chair with their 'fat backside,' it certainly wouldn't be him. He was blessed with a body that could squeeze between cracks. More likely he would scratch his chair with his bony spine. He reached for another scroll and when he was almost finished skimming it, said, "I haven't got a knack for planting. I'm more useful in here. Find anything interesting?"

It only took one loose leg joint to collapse the thing, no matter how daintily he perched, himself. Maybe when he got up... no. That'd just make trouble. Then again, a good tussle might just make scroll reading worth the while.
"Not yet," he answered with a smile. "Just got started though. I'm sure I'll find something worth reading. You know, if you haven't outusefuled everybody."
