Seashore Beach

On the western beaches sits a quiet port. A small, privately run tavern sits on the docks, although it offers drinks only to the sailors who operate the ship that goes back and forth from the Starburst Isles and Swirling Seas ports. Although the sailors are tough and strong, they aren't without their problems. The port they operate out of barely keeps the encroaching wildlife back, leading to a great many disputes between the residents of the ship and the residents of the beach.
The beach itself stretches far and long, but is not without it's quirks. Small "islands" of sand stretch out from the original and interconnect with one another, creating a veritable (if easily seen) maze of passages and dunes. The tide in this area seems to rise and fall at random due to the constant chaos of the Swirling Seas, leading some passages to disappear in and instant whereas others might reappear the next. Entire "islands" are engulfed on occasion.
It is said that somewhere within these sands is the entrance to the Mana Reef. Although no one is ever quite sure WHERE the entrance lies, it is well known that within the complex maze of sands that it exists somewhere. Deep pits into the ocean between the various dunes are often the source of access into the maze of coral.
The Mana Reef sits with it's own quiet ecosystem. The coral that makes up the reef is so vast and complicated that it seems to wall off the reef from the rest of the ocean; and indeed it does. The otherwise turbulent sea comes to an almost eerie calm within these waters. Some say it is the result of Manaphy, who is rumoured to live here.
Of course, there's no Azumarill waiting here to grant you an air bead; you'll have to find some other way to manage the waters. Though, the ferry is what often brings the beads in the first place...

Once again Era and Ethfael found themselves standing before the notice board, looking for a mission. Erinn was with them, staring up at the board completely in awe of the sheer number of notices, having never seen it before. ”There are so many!” the Paras said excitedly, ”How do you choose?” Era and Ethfael said nothing to their curious partner. The Dratini was scanning the board quickly, and the Pichu followed his gaze, both of them lost in their own thoughts. Erinn watched the two leaders of his team curiously, trying to see what they might be thinking.

Without warning, Ethfael removed a notice from the board and set it on the ground in front of himself and Era, causing Erinn to hurry over to see what had been decided. Era scanned it with interest, a smile appearing on her face as she read. ”Well,” she said, ”This will be interesting, that’s for sure.”

Erinn peered over the notice, his eyes widening in shock as he read. ”How-How does that happen?” he asked in amazement. ”You can’t just switch bodies can you? I mean, it just doesn’t happen!” Noting the look on Ethfael’s face the Paras shrank back, ”It doesn’t right?” he asked Era, almost pleading for help.

The Pichu looked at Erinn sympathetically. She knew that he was inexperienced, but she hadn’t realized that it was to this extent. Just as she was about to explain however, Ethfael spoke, ”It does happen,” he said coolly to a cowering Erinn, ”But it is their hearts that are swapped. Not their bodies. A Pokemon called Manaphy knows a move called Heart Swap which does this. That’s why they requested that we lead them to Manaphy, so that it can reverse it.

Erinn nodded nervously, wilting under Ethfael’s gaze, and Era took pity on the young Paras. ”Don’t be too harsh on him, she said to Ethfael, ”He’s still inexperienced, but that’s not his fault. That’s why we let him join our Team, so that we could teach him. Ethfael nodded; he still felt slightly angry at Erinn, but Era was right, and he couldn’t argue with the truth. ”Now then,” Era said briskly, picking up the notice to put in the bag which Ethfael wore around his neck, ”If we’re all ready, we should go. Our clients need our help. The other two nodded, and the three of them headed out of the Guild to begin their new mission.

~~~~
”WHAAAAAT?! YOU WEREN’T THERE WHEN THE GUILD WAS HEART SWAPPED?!” The Kadabra who was really a Marshtomp shouted angrily. ”Well this is just great he said to his partner. ”What good are they going to do!” Clearly he was furious that they hadn’t been a part of it, which caused both Era and Ethfael to grimace, but they stood firm trying to appear as if they knew what they were talking about anyways. Erinn however, cowered behind his leaders, terrified of the Marshtomp and Kadabra, whichever was which one.
”Calm down,” the Marshtomp who was a Kadabra said. “I’m sure that we can get this straightened out. The Guild wouldn’t have sent a Team that couldn’t help us, no? So I’m sure that these three will be perfectly fine. They’ll get us back to normal, I am certain of it. Era nodded gratefully to the Marshtomp who was a Kadabra, as did Ethfael, as the Kadabra who was a Marshtomp scoffed scornfully. ”Now then, I suppose we should introduce ourselves,” the Marshtomp who was a Kadabra said, ”My name is Trillion, although most call me Trill, and the Marshtomp currently taking residence in my body is-“
”Derrick, if it matters to you.”The other Pokemon said, ”And don’t act as though I want to be in your body Trill, I’m STUCK in it darn it!”
Derrick angrily brandished the spoon which he held at Trillion who glared daggers at him. ”Be careful with that!” he snapped, ”That is a very delicate instrument of psychic power!
Derrick glared back at Trillion, ”No it’s not!” the exasperated, Heart Swapped Marshtomp said. ”IT. IS. A. SPOON.”
By this time the two looked about ready to attack each other, and Era stepped in to intervene. ”Calm down you two,” she said, stepping between the two. The whole sight was rather comical, a Marshtomp and Kadabra about to fight, and a tiny Pichu standing between them with her paws to either side, trying to prevent the fight. Erinn stifled a laugh as he peeked out from behind Ethfael, but the Dratini watched, ready to intervene if Era was threatened at all by their clients. ”We’re here to help you out, so you can’t fight if you want to get back to normal!”
Both Derrick and Trillion looked down, ashamed. ”You’re right of course,” said Trillion, ”It’s just that we’ve both been out of sorts since we switched bodies.” Derrick harrumphed in agreement, but had enough grace to look slightly shameful. The general mood of the group relaxed considerably after that, although the Kadabra and Marshtomp still seemed a bit tense.
”Well then…” Era said, breaking the increasingly awkward silence between the group. ”I guess we’d best be off. Manaphy will be underwater, so we purchased some air beads from the sailors at the port. We brought an extra just in case you didn’t have one.”
The last comment was directed at Derrick, who looked at Era with disbelief. ”Why do I have to accept something from you?” he asked accusingly. ”If I were in my real body I wouldn’t even need that.”
”The question is do you have one or not?” Ethfael said steadily in place of Era, annoyed that the Marshtomp, no matter what his problem was, was treating his partner this way.
”Of course not,” Derrick said angrily. ”I’ll take it when we actually get underwater though, so keep it until then.”
Trillion glared at Derrick, ”Watch your mouth,” he warned, ”That’s no way to talk to someone here to help you.” To Era and Ethfael he said, ”I apologize for his rude behavior. Please don’t mind him.”
”I don’t regret a word,” Derrick said darkly, only for Trillion to shoot him another glare.
Era said nothing but rested a paw on Ethfael to calm him down. ”Alright then,” she said, choosing to ignore the comments from Derrick, ”Let’s get started.” Without another word, Era headed off and Ethfael and Erinn waited for Derrick and Trillion to follow before they went along behind, heading down to the beach.
~~~~

They reached the dunes of the beach without further incident save for a bit more squabbling between Derrick and Trillion. The beach itself was beautiful: the sea glistened in the sun, a beautiful turquoise green color, and the sand glinted a pearly white which darkened slightly where it met the water. It was a stunning sight; enough to strike silence into even the bickering Marshtomp and Kadabra duo, which was truly amazing. Erinn was the first to break the silence, ”It’s so beautiful!” the Paras said, his eyes wider than saucers. The younger Pokemon had never seen anything like it in his entire life, and even Era and Ethfael were impressed by the sight although they’d seen things like it before. The Marshtomp and Kadabra calmed down as well, allowing a sense of pleasant surprise to overcome the group at the sight of the beach’s natural beauty.

”So…” Derrick said after a moment’s pause, ”Where do we start? I personally would love to get into that water right about now.” The fact that he was currently speaking from within a Kadabra’s body made this remark seem very out of place, along with the undignified manner with which he raced down the dune towards the water.

”DON’T DO THAT YOU IDIOT!!!!” came an indignant cry from Trillion. Kadabra aren’t meant to swim! Don’t go anywhere near that water with my body! Trillion hurried down the dune, waddling awkwardly, obviously unused to the body of a Marshtomp, and Ethfael went after them hurriedly, to prevent the conflict.

”Enough!” Ethfael said, his voice surprisingly intimidating, ”We’re never going to get anywhere at this rate! If you two ever want to find Manaphy, you have to cooperate! The reason why Manaphy uses its Heart Swap is because it wants Pokemon to understand one another. Obviously it believed that you two should learn from each other, and it won’t return you to normal until you learn what it wanted you to learn, even if you do find it, so you’d best try to at least get along if you ever want to get back to normal, understand?” Both Trillion and Derrick paused in mid-step, contemplating Ethfael’s words.

Era sighed with relief, hoping that they got the message this time. It was hard enough to find a Manaphy as these two had requested, but to play peacemaker all the way was certain to grow tedious after awhile. She walked down after the others with Erinn close behind her, the Paras sticking very close for fear of being left behind. ”Cheer up everyone,” Era said gently, ”We can get through this if we all get along. I know it must be hard to be in the wrong body, but you have to bear with it until we find Manaphy. Please?”

The two Pokemon muttered their agreement although it was certain that neither one was any happier with the arrangement than they had been before. ”Perhaps it would just be best if we kept going, Trillion said at last. ”If anything is true, it’s that we won’t get anywhere by standing here.

”For once he makes sense,” Derrick said, ”Come on rescue team, let’s get going.”

As they crossed the sandbar, Team MistMelody kept careful track of their clients, both of which seemed to be determined to ignore the other. Derrick was determinedly ignoring Trillion’s protestation and walking in the water. Trillion looked on with disdain, and walked on the sand on the other side of the group from the water. Era glanced at Ethfael nervously and whispered to him, ”What do we do Ethfael?” she said, ”These two aren’t getting along at all.”

“Well,” he responded, “I suppose we could-“ Ethfael’s words were interrupted by a squeak from Erinn who pointed one quavering claw across the beach. The others turned to look and were greeted by the sight of a group of Krabby heading for them with a Kingler not far behind. The Pokemon glared at the smaller group of adventurers, and Ethfael immediately shifted his focus to battle tactics. ”Erinn, take those two Krabby over there, I’ll take the three on that side if I can. Era…”

”I’m way ahead of you,” she said with a smile. ”Don’t worry about me, take care of our clients.” Then the Pichu raced towards the Kingler, ready to take him on one on one. Ethfael nodded and also rushed to meet his opponents, they couldn’t allow the clients to be injured. Erinn took a deep breath and headed towards the Krabby that were his to fight, hoping that he didn’t mess this up.

”WAH! WHAT DO I DO?!” Derrick shouted, staring at the oncoming Krabby, ”I don’t know how to use Psychic moves! I’m a Marshtomp darn it!”

Trillion sighed in exasperation and took pity on his friend. ”To use a Psychic move,” he said, dodging a Water Gun, ”You have to clear your mind and concentrate on what is most important. See your opponent’s moves in your mind and then use your power to stop them in their tracks. That’s where the spoon comes in. Use it to channel your power, and it will help you.

Derrick tried to follow Trillion’s words, but the more he tried, the more frustrated he got until at last he gave up. ”THAT’S IT! he said, ”I can’t do this!” Just then a Krabby which had escaped the watchful eyes of Team MistMelody spotted him and the creature excitedly raced towards him claws extended. ”WAAAAH! WHAT DO I DO IT’S GOING TO-“ That instant there was a loud cracking noise and Derrick reappeared in the air. ”KILL ME!” he finished before looking down, ”Hey! I did it! I used your Teleport move!

Trillion looked up with concern, ”Yes, but can you stop yourself from falling?”

”Piece of cake!” Derrick replied, and paused to hover in the air as if he’d done it all his life. ”Hey!” he said with surprise, ”What do you know? It worked!”

Trillion felt a sense of relief for his friend until he realized that the Krabby was now headed towards him. Instinctively, he tried to Teleport away, but the power wasn’t there, for this wasn’t his body. Rapidly, Trillion tried to think of a move his friend knew, but for once he was drawing a blank. ”Mud Shot!” Derrick shouted at him. ”Just use Mud Shot!” Trillion blinked in surprise, of course, why hadn’t he thought of that? Unsure of where to begin the Kadabra watched the oncoming Krabby and then felt a sort of tickling sensation in his throat. Taking a breath, he aimed at the rogue Krabby and fired, pleased when a stream of mud came firing out towards it. The Krabby fell onto its back, writhing in surprise at being bowled over, and Trillion moved in to finish it with another Mud Shot. The Krabby managed to get up again though, and the moment it did, it raced off to the water, not wanting to risk another attack.

While all of this was going on, Team MistMelody was efficiently taking care of the other Krabby. Ethfael came to the trio on the left and attacked mercilessly to keep them away from Derrick and Trillion. He felt a sensation build up within him that he hadn’t experienced before, and he attacked using Dragon Rage on the first Krabby. The unlucky Pokemon fell to the ground unconscious from the sheer force of the attack, and the other two stared first at the unconscious Krabby, then at Ethfael, and then they turned and fled.

Erinn cautiously met the two Krabby on the right as they charged, and as the Krabby reached out to clench him in Vice Grip, he parried with a Slash, causing the Krabby to draw its claw back very quickly. This act was met by silence between all three, Erinn because he was impressed with his own power, and the Krabby because they were slightly frightened of him. With greater confidence, Erinn advanced and Slashed again at the Krabby on the right, causing it to wince in pain. The one on the left was ready for him though, and hit him with a Bubble attack. Erinn recoiled and glared at the Krabby, which stared back at him. Drawing into his internal power, Erinn used Giga Drain, straightening as the energy from the Krabby left it and came into him. He leaped forward and Slashed the two Krabby again with renewed energy. The two turned and fled, not wanting to take any more damage, and Erinn smiled slightly as he watched them go. ”I did it,” he whispered incredulously to himself.

Era had the hardest fight of them all by far. The Kingler watched her come with an almost lazy look in its eyes; it obviously didn’t think that a Pichu that wasn’t even one fourth of its size would pose any threat to its well-being. Era was determined to prove it wrong, and she advanced on it, sparks flying from her cheeks. She attacked first, sending a Thundershock through her foe, causing it to cry out as the volt raced through its body. It retaliated then, trying to Stomp on Era as she raced underneath it. She flinched as the legs crashed around her, but stood her ground, using a Headbutt from underneath the Kingler which set it off balance, and then using Swift to finish the job and topple it over. Era was surprised by the Swift attack, something she hadn’t known she could do, but she disregarded it, the Kingler being the most important problem here, and used Thundershock once again. The Kingler, in a last attempt to gain the advantage spun around and grasped Era in its claws squeezing with Vice Grip. Era forced breath into her lungs just barely, as she was squeezed tighter and tighter, and then she fired off a final Thundershock. It was at such close range that the Kingler didn’t stand a chance, and its grasp slackened as it fell unconscious, allowing Era to escape from its grip. She panted slightly, her lungs sore from being deprived of air, and she winced slightly as she moved although she smiled when she looked back and saw everyone else safe.

”Era,” Ethfael said with concern, coming up to her, ”Are you alright? You suffered a harsh blow there.” Era was about to respond when the others came over, each eager to tell their own story of victory.

”Era I did it! Two Krabby came at me but I handled them, no problem! You should have seen them run! It was amazing!”

”I used Teleport! It was the coolest thing ever! It was like one second I was there and then all of a sudden I wasn’t! Then I just levitated there while the Krabby attacked where I had been standing just before!”

”I must admit, it was rather impressive, how quickly you figured it out Derrick. I however actually attacked the Krabby! Oh it was a sight to behold when I used Mud Shot, you should have seen it. It was a marvelous piece of work. That Krabby fled after one attack!”

Era smiled at the others, ignoring the pain that she felt. ”I’m so glad that you all did so well!” she said, ”It’s a shame I couldn’t have seen it happen, but I’m sure you were all spectacular.” The three who she spoke to radiated with pride at her praise, but Ethfael still regarded her with concern, knowing that she was more hurt than she was making herself out to be. ”Well come on then,” she said with a smile, ”We’ve still got to find Manaphy, and I’m sure before we do that we’ll have to find Mana Reef, which is where Manaphy is said to be found.”

”Well then, let’s go!” said Derrick, who’s spirits seemed to be greatly improved. Trillion followed contentedly and Erinn followed close behind those two.

Era watched them go and went to follow but she was stopped by Ethfael, who barred her way with his tail. ”You can pretend all you like, but I know that you’re hurt,” he said. ”There’s still a long way to go, and I won’t have you below your normal strength before we even have gotten started.” He removed an Oran Berry from the bag and placed it on the ground in front of Era.

The Pichu looked gratefully at Ethfael and ate the juicy Oran Berry as they walked on to join the other three. ”You’re too kind Ethfael, she said with a smile, ”But thank you.” The Dratini smiled slightly but said nothing, and together they sped up their pace to catch up with the other three.

As they continued along the sandbar, they came to a spot where they had to wade across a stream of water that cut off another portion of the beach from them. Everyone but Trillion began to cross; Era, Ethfael and Erinn practically swimming despite its shallowness, and Derrick was walking through it quite contentedly. Trillion however stood on the edge of the sand, staring at the water with distaste. ”You coming Trill?” Derrick asked, ”The water’s great!”

Trillion paused before responding, ”I despise getting wet,” he said, looking at the water distastefully.

Era sighed, ”I’m afraid that you have to,” she said, ”Manaphy is certain to be somewhere underwater, which means that we have to get wet to find it.”

”Besides,” Derrick broke in, ”You’re a Marshtomp now, and Marshtomp love the water! He proved his point by splashing about slightly, with an expression of delight on his face. Despite being in the body of a Kadabra, Derrick was still a Marshtomp at heart. ”Lighten up a little Trill,” he said, splashing Trillion with water.

Trillion spluttered as he was doused in water, looking offended by the act. He was about to say something to Derrick when an expression of surprise came over his face. ”It feels…good,” he said, astounded. Then, without warning he leaped into the water in a display of childish delight quite uncharacteristic of him. ”This is amazing!” he cried, swimming around in the water, ”And to think I always thought you were crazy to like swimming.”

Derrick looked offended for a second but then laughed good-naturedly. ”It’s about time you relaxed a bit Trill,” he said, ”I sometimes wonder how you can be so uptight without hurting yourself.” The two Heart Swapped Pokemon laughed as they splashed in the water, and Era looked on in approval. The first step to finding Manaphy was cooperation, and it seemed as if Derrick and Trillion were getting closer to that.

As they came up to the next part of the beach, the appearance of it changed. This sand was darker in color which obviously meant that this part of the beach was often covered in water. ”We have to be careful of the tide,” Ethfael said to the group as a whole, ”The moment it comes in, we’ll be swimming, and, if we’re not careful, we’ll be carried out to sea. Erinn quickly hid behind Ethfael from the water, afraid of being swept away, which was greeted by light hearted laughter from the group as they cheerfully kept up their trek.

The island was a rather plain one, nothing special really, or so it appeared. Era glanced around at the glistening ocean with delight, it was really very lovely on a day like today. Missions never took place in such happy places, so it was quite simply wonderful to find that they got to spend the day in a place like this. The ocean breeze blew lightly over them and it brought a contented smile to her face, things were good. ”Are you enjoying yourself?” Ethfael teased her lightly.

Era nodded, ”Things are really nice here,” she said, ”It’s too bad that we can’t have more of our missions in places like these.” They continued progressing forward, water lapping at their feet more frequently now. ”Everyone, we have to hurry,” Era said to the others. Receiving no comment, she looked back and saw the other three clustered around something knee-deep in water, much to her dismay. Alerting Ethfael of the situation, they both made to head over to the others as quickly as possible.

”Hey guys! Come over here!” Erinn called suddenly, waving his claws. ”Check out what we found!” Era and Ethfael exchanged a glance and picked up the pace considerably to see what the others might have found.

Their clients and Erinn were all hunched over something buried in the sand. When they reached it, Derrick glanced up, ”About time you got here,” he said, ”Look what I found buried in the sand!” They both glanced down, seeing a luminescent gem glinting beneath the sand. It was ruby red in color and had a perfect red shape. ”Pretty neat, huh? Derrick said, looking pleased with himself. ”I found buried treasure.”

Trillion gave him a sharp glance. ”If it hadn’t been for me you wouldn’t have seen it at all,” he said, ”I was the one who pointed out something shining in the water, so you can’t claim full credit.”

”Fine, fine,” Derrick said, rolling his eyes, ”So maybe you helped, a little, but I still actually found it. Trillion threw his arms into the air in exasperation, but only shook his head to express his displeasure. ”Anyway, I’m going to take it!”

”No wait!” Era and Ethfael shouted together, but it was too late, Derrick had already grabbed the jewel, now submerged in water, and pulled. The jewel lit up and out of the sand erupted a Staryu, clearly furious that its jewel had been touched. Derrick backed up in alarm as it advanced on him, spinning so fast that its legs were like blades.

Era leaped out in front of Derrick, zapping the Staryu with Thundershock and standing protectively in front of their client. The Staryu made a noise of anger, and focused on her, locking onto the tiny Pichu. It advanced, furiously whirling about in Rapid Spin, and Era stood her ground, not about to let it get to Derrick, watching for the moment of opportune attack. Ethfael plunged forward with Extremespeed, knocking the Staryu off course and into the water. There was a moment of silence then Derrick laughed nervously, ”Thanks for that,” he said to them, ”I won’t touch anything lying around again. I promise.” Era nodded and was about to relax when suddenly the Staryu reappeared. It spotted her and made a high-pitched noise of anger, its jewel slightly cracked. Then out of the ocean more Staryu appeared, and they found themselves outnumbered four to one. ”Oh boy…” Derrick said nervously, and the Staryu charged.

Team MistMelody sprang into action, all three jumping in front of their clients. Erinn aimed at the nearest Staryu and shot a Psybeam directly at it, and the Staryu fell backwards into the ocean again. Ethfael charged at another opponent with an Extremespeed, and Era sent a Swift attack flying towards the entire group of Staryu. The Pokemon made unintelligible angry sounds and came upon them, legs spinning furiously like razor sharp knives. Never backing down, Ethfael raced into the fray, attacking the Staryu left and right with Extremespeed and Icy Wind. Era followed suit, with a Headbutt here and a Swift attack there to subdue the enraged Pokemon. Erinn wasn’t quite as adventurous as the other two, but stayed in front of Derrick and Trillion, attacking any Staryu that came too close. The entire scene was chaos, and soon everyone save for the Marshtomp and Kadabra was beaten and bruised. ”They won’t stop coming!” Erinn moaned as he parried a Staryu’s blades with his claw. ”What do we do?!”

Era heard his cry of distress and threw the Staryu on top of her off with the force of her Swift attack. ”Maybe if we take care of the one whose gem we cracked, the others will leave!” It was a wild guess, but the other Staryu seemed to be circling protectively around the one with the cracked jewel, as if it were their leader. Era winced as a Staryu crashed into her, ”Erinn, Ethfael, let’s go for that one!” The other two nodded and hurried to join her. ”Be careful Derrick, Trillion, don’t let them hit you!” Era called to them before Team MistMelody rushed towards the mass of Staryu where the one with the cracked gem lurked. Derrick and Trillion nodded, both looking terrified, and too scared for words.

Era, Ethfael, and Erinn came to the barricade of Staryu and burst through aided by Ethfael’s Dragon Rage. The Staryu with the cracked gem was there, just as expected, and Era didn’t wait, but jumped to make the first attack. Allowing the electricity stored in her to raise up to the surface, she lunged at the Staryu with a Volt Tackle. Four Staryu burst in from the circle around them and took the blow, crumpling to the ground in place of the one in the center. Era gasped in pain as the recoil raced through her, and backed up as Ethfael charged toward the rogue Staryu. The same strategy was used on his attack as was on Era’s and a few Staryu fell to the ground from Ethfael’s attack, but not the one which was the target. The Staryu in the middle shot Swift attack at them, causing all three to jump opposite directions to avoid it and effectively separating them. Era and Ethfael both were met by Staryu where they ended up, and found themselves fighting once more, but Erinn was overlooked. Seeing his chance, the Paras slipped around behind the cracked gem Staryu and then used Giga Drain. The Staryu all froze as their leader shrieked in pain, and fell to the sand, not rising again. Erinn stood behind the fallen Staryu, a look of satisfaction on his face and Era and Ethfael smiled at Erinn relieved that the leader had been defeated. Unfortunately, this didn’t bear the intended result; all of the Staryu turned, gems flashing with red light and swarmed towards Erinn, whose look turned terrified in an instant as six Staryu headed towards him at once. ”Sorry Erinn,” Era muttered, ”I have only one choice.” The Pichu fired a Thundershock at the Staryu, and it spread across them like fire through a forest, until the last had fallen.

All of the Staryu safely taken care of, Trillion and Derrick rushed over to Team MistMelody. ”Great Arceus!” Trillion said, ”Are you all alright? You gave us quite a scare!”

”You were so brave,” Derrick said in admiration, ”Fighting all of those Staryu like that even though it was my fault.” For once Derrick appeared to humble himself and said sincerely, ”I am sorry that I doubted you. You’re a decent rescue team after all.”

Ethfael reached into his bag, pulling out an Oran berry for himself, Era, and Erinn. ”It is our job you know,” he responded lightly to Derrick’s comment. ”Rescue teams are there to help after all.” The team finished off their Oran berries quickly, and then they prepared to move on. ”Now, we have to find Manaphy,” Ethfael said, ”We’ve still got a long way to go before we find one, that’s for certain.” Without further ado, the group returned to the sands and continued their search.

As they walked across the sandbar they spotted the larger sand dunes up across another band of water. ”We should go there,” Ethfael said, pointing with his tail. ”If I recall correctly the stories say that the entrance to Mana Reef is hidden in a deep pool between large sand dunes.” Noticing the questioning stare he recieved from Erinn, Ethfael clarified his statement for his Teammate. ”Mana Reef is supposed to be the home of Manaphy. Seashore Beach is the place where its entrance is located, so that’s what we’re searching for.”

”Really?” Erinn asked, ”Manaphy lives in a place like this? Weird…”

”They say it’s much more impressive once you actually find Mana Reef,” Trillion interjected, somewhat eagerly, ”There’s rumored to be coral of all shapes, sizes, and colors which even changes when the atmosphere is right.” Trillion seemed very excited, his Marshtomp glimmer brightly as he spoke of the place.

”Ha!” Derrick laughed harshly, clearly skeptical, ”Coral that changes? What will they think of next? Flying rocks?”

”Well actually…” Ethfael began.

”Never mind,” Derrick responded quickly, so that he wouldn’t be corrected. ”What matters is that we actually find this pool or whatever because we need to find Manaphy so that Trill and I can get back to normal.”

The next break of water was crossed without much incident, except for Trillion being slightly reluctant to get out of it. ”You’ll have plenty of time to swim once we get underwater,” Era pointed out to him reasonably, so he grudgingly obliged. There were a number of different dunes to be looked around, so they decided to split up into two groups.

”Ethfael, Trillion, you take the right side,” Era said, ”And Derrick, Erinn and I will take the left. If you find something Trillion can shoot a Mud Shot into the air to help us find you, and I’ll make a lightning bolt from Thundershock if we find something, alright?

”Sounds good to me,” Trillion said, saluting the much smaller Pichu, ”I’ll do my best.”

”We’ll be fine,” Ethfael assured her, noting Era’s concerned look. ”Take care!” With a wave from his tail, Ethfael set off after Trillion who had already rounded the first dune.

”Alright,” Era said, ”Let’s go find that pool.” She turned and headed in the opposite direction, and Erinn and Trillion followed.

As the small group turned the corner, they encountered a group of Slowpoke sunning on some rocks, an interesting sight to see. ”Stay very quiet,” Era whispered, ”Slowpoke are normally peaceful creatures, but we shouldn’t take chances if we can help it. We’ll be alright so long as we don’t wake them up.” The group wove their way through the pack of Slowpoke, making as little sound as possible so as not to disturb the slumbering Pokemon.

After a while of this, Derrick started to grow bored, and began playing with the pebbles on the ground using the psychic powers of his Heart Swapped body. Using Confusion, he lifted them off the ground a few feet and then dropped them back on the ground. He and Erinn became quite involved in this game, and soon he was lifting them higher and throwing them with his mind. ”Check this out Era,” Derrick whispered, nudging her. ”I can hit that rock over there with this, want to see?” Without waiting for an answer he concentrated and lifted a medium sized rock off the ground and caused it to soar into a larger rock and crumble. ”Cool, huh?”

Era smiled, glad that Derrick’s mood was still a good one. ”You’re really getting the hang of it, aren’t you?” she whispered back, and Derrick grinned. They continued walking through and were almost at the edge when Era heard a ‘thunk’. Ears twitching, she turned around to see Erinn standing paralyzed with fear at the feet of a Slowbro. Derrick shook his head indicating that it wasn’t his fault, and then he closed his eyes and concentrated, lifting a large rock off the ground with Confusion. Opening his eyes and aiming carefully, he threw the rock at the Slowbro’s head, creating another ‘thunk’ as it hit. The Slowbro blinked slowly and looked toward Derrick disinterestedly, Yawning. Derrick looked into the Slowbro’s eyes and yawn also, his eyes starting to close. Recognizing the attack, Era sighed with exasperation and shot a Swift Attack at the Slowbro, trying to keep the battle as quick and silent as possible. The Slowbro turned its gaze to her and its eyes glowed as it shot a Confusion attack into her mind. Era winced as a pain like a headache coursed through her skull. Her thoughts jumbled and she looked around, puzzled. Who was she fighting? Her eyes settled on a Paras who looked familiar, yes, that must have been who it was. Charging up her electricity, she shot a bolt at the other Pokemon, hoping to finish this fight quickly. The Paras didn’t look like he’d put up much of a fight.

Erinn yelped as the electricity hit him, and stared at Era with hurt that she would attack him. The Pichu’s gaze seemed slightly unfocused as she looked at him, and he guessed that she had been meddled with by this Slowbro. Turning to Derrick for a hand, he found that the Pokemon in question had fallen asleep, and was currently lying on the ground and snoring. That left…him. Erinn gulped, and looked at the Slowbro which stared back at him rather vacantly, waiting for him to do something. Well then, do something he would. Erinn took a deep breath and fired a Psywave at his opponent causing the Slowbro to take a step back. It lazily looked at him and sent a Confusion attack at the Paras as well. Erinn bit his lip, forcing himself not to cry out in pain. Arceus that had hurt!

Era meanwhile stepped back, still muddled. The Paras had attacked that Slowpoke, not her, so maybe they weren’t fighting. Why was she here at all anyway? She should be doing something, not being at the beach. This was by far the strangest thing that had happened to her. Turning around, she began to walk away. This couldn’t be the right place for her to be. She passed by a sleeping Kadabra and blinked with surprise. What sort of Kadabra slept like that? Curiously she poked the sleeping Pokemon in the side. ”Hello there, what are you doing?”

Erinn Slashed the Slowbro across its soft belly and jumped to the side to avoid a Psybeam that it shot his way. This Pokemon was creepy, it was so slow and deliberate, and it wanted to kill him. ”Why me?” he said glumly, as he Slashed at it again. The Slowbro said nothing responding with only a Yawn. Erinn was ahead of the Slowbro’s game though, and forced himself not to yawn as well. ”I’ll give you something that will make you tired!” he said, and used Giga Drain, sucking the power from the Slowbro. It looked at him for a long time, and didn’t blink. Erinn waited for it to retaliate but it didn’t respond at all. Cautiously he poked it, and the Slowbro didn’t respond. It had fallen asleep with its eyes open, and standing up. ”Right…” Erinn said awkwardly, and turned to see what had happened to Era and Derrick.

Derrick didn’t stir from Era’s poking, and she was quite put out for being ignored. ”Wake up already!” she said, shoving the Kadabra this time. Derrick didn’t stir, and she glared at him. ”WAKE UP!!!” she said loudly, shocking him with a Thundershock.

Derrick awoke with a start at the shock, and looked about groggily. ”What was that for?” he whined, ”Can’t a guy get some rest?”

”Why were you sleeping?” Era asked, ”I’ve never known a Kadabra to sleep with other Pokemon around!” She giggled childishly, what an odd Pokemon he was.

Derrick blinked with confusion, Era was acting really strangely. ”You know perfectly well that I’m not a Kadabra, and I can sleep however and where ever I like.” Standing up, he wiped the sand off of himself awkwardly and gave her another glance, noting that her expression was slightly vacant like the Slowbro’s had been. ”What did that guy do to you Era, you don’t look like you’re all there.”

Now Era was more confused than ever. How did this strange Pokemon know her name? The pain in her head was more annoying than ever, and she wanted something to make sense. ”Do I…know you?” she asked with some effort. If she thought about it this Pokemon was kind of familiar like that Paras. If only the pain in her head would stop she might be able to remember.

”Okay, something’s seriously wrong with you,” Derrick said, picking her up in his arms. ”That crazy Slowbro must have messed with your mind. I’m Derrick remember? Trill and I were Heart Swapped by Manaphy and you’re helping us get switched back. Come on Era, you know this already!”

”Set me down!” Era said indignantly when he picked her up, struggling to get out of the Kadabra’s hands. She wasn’t some child to be held by larger Pokemon. As she listened to what Derrick said though, the haze over her thoughts finally dissipated and reality came crashing back. That’s right, she was here to help Derrick and Trillion, and that Slowbro had confused her. ”Alright,” Era said, looking Derrick in the eye, ”I’m alright now. The Slowbro confused me.”

Derrick nodded and set her down again, ”Glad you’re back to normal,” he said, ”That Slowbro was pretty devious.”

”That’s right! The Slowbro! What happened to it?” Era asked.

”Don’t worry, Erinn said, watching the ongoing scene from a few feet away. ”I took care of it.” He smiled proudly as Era and Derrick looked over at him. ”It fell asleep after I attacked it, so if we leave soon we should be able to get away from it before it wakes up again.”

Era smiled at Erinn. He was growing braver with every battle. ”Good for you Erinn,” she said encouragingly. ”Come on. Now that everything’s back to normal we’d better hurry up and find that pool considering we’ve lost so much time.”

”Something tells me we don’t have to worry about that,” Derrick said with a grin, pointing at the sky. Era followed his gaze to see a stream of mud like a fountain erupting into the area above the dunes. ”Come on!” Derrick cried, hurrying forward. ”I can almost feel my flippers again!” Era and Erinn laughed and then followed, hurrying to catch up with their eager companion.

Ethfael and Trillion were waiting for them in the break between the dunes a few sections away. When Trillion spotted them, he let the stream of mud die, causing a great majority of the mud to fall on himself and Ethfael. ”Maybe I should have said Water Gun,” Era said as she, Erinn, and Derrick waded through a pool of mud to reach the others. ”Did you find it?”

Ethfael nodded, gesturing to an area that the mud pool did not touch. ”We stumbled across it by accident in those bushes. A Shellder was giving Trillion a bit of trouble and he nearly fell in.”

Derrick laughed loudly, grinning. ”Smooth Trill, real smooth.”

Trillion nodded awkwardly, ”Not one of my finer moments I’m afraid, but it found us the pool.” The group walked over to the bushes and Trillion spread them apart for them to take a look. Sure enough there was a small pool, large enough for most medium-sized Pokemon to fit into without squeezing. It was too dark to see what lay beneath the surface but it was clear that it went on for a distance below.

They all stood in awe for a moment, realizing that this would lead them to the legendary Manaphy and stared at the calm waters. ”Alright,” Era said after a moment, ”Ethfael, if you would, please pass out the air beads.” The beads were small when they were handed out, but once they reached water, they would expand into a bubble around the Pokemon holding them which was filled with air. Once everyone but Trillion was holding one, Era nodded, and one by one they slipped into the water.

The group swam through a narrow passageway which led downward for quite some time. The passage was clearly not a natural occurrence, created at one point by some sort of tunneling Pokemon. After at least ten minutes of downward swimming the path turned and the group followed it; this led to another several minutes of swimming down a path level with the seafloor, until it finally broadened out to a spectacular sight. As they cave ended, the group stopped to look about at the place that they had discovered. There was coral absolutely everywhere, and it shimmered in luminescent colors unlike any coral they had seen before. It grew so close together and vibrantly that it was like an underwater forest, truly a sight to behold. Pokemon swam about peacefully, and a school of Luvdisc swam past them as they came out into the open. The water was warm and pleasant, and the water was lit by the coral, seeing as the reef itself was far too detached from the surface to receive any light from the sun.

”So this is Mana Reef…” Ethfael murmured, staring enraptured at the beautiful coral. ”It’s more beautiful than I ever imagined.” Looking back at the others he mused aloud, ”It’s no wonder that Manaphy chooses to make this place its home. What better place could you find underwater?” Era nodded in agreement, overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of this place. It was, as Ethfael said, more beautiful than she had imagined.

”What I wouldn't give to live here!” Derrick said happily, spinning around with delight. ”Once I'm back to normal I have to come back here!” Undeterred by the Heart Swap, Derrick's Marshtomp nature shone through now that they were underwater.

Trillion stayed silent, pensively staring through the water. He could tell that the water which he breathed in was purer than the water of the sea on the beach, most likely another factor explaining why Manaphy was said to take up residence here. Whatever the case, any doubts the group may have had were swept away, and their spirits lifted, assured that they were in the right place. ”Come on!” Era said brightly, ”Manaphy can't be far now!”

They moved forward, going into the forest of coral, excitement bubbling within them. They gazed about at the colorful, luminescent stalks which surrounded them, making the sea sparkle with their strange glowing light. The coral seemed almost like it was alive, the colors pulsing like breaths, and it gave the place a mystical feel. The group gazed at it, marveling at its wonder as they swam through it. Erinn's eyes widened so that they popped out of his head, and he swam over to the coral to get a closer look.

The others took no notice of the actions of Erinn, and so as he gazed at the shimmering colors the others moved on ahead. All of them that is, except for Ethfael, who spotted their youngest group member from his spot at the back of the group and paused, intending to chide him for holding them up. However, as he moved closer to the Paras a whirlpool sprung up behind him, causing Ethfael to spin around, expecting to find a foe lurking in the coral, but instead there was no one there, just a barred path. Ethfael turned around to see Erinn gazing at him fearfully, clearly nervous at the sight of the whirlpool. Ethfael sighed irritably, ”Come on,” he said to Erinn, ”We obviously can't go this way anymore, so let's find another path to catch up to the others.

”I'm sorry Ethfael,” Erinn said quietly, expecting to be scolded, ”I didn't mean it, I swear.” He cautiously came over beside Ethfael, afraid of what would happen next.

”What's done is done,” Ethfael said sharply, ”Now come along, we don't want them getting any farther away if we can help it. Without another word, Ethfael turned and went down a side path that led to the right. Erinn ducked his head in shame and followed Ethfael down the path, staying a safe distance away from his agitated co-leader.

The path that they followed turned often and led them every which way until they had lost all sense of direction. Erinn glanced back down the way they came before before turning back the way that they were going. ”Ethfael...” he said warily, ”Maybe we should turn around. This isn't getting us anywhere.”

Ethfael closed his eyes and took a deep breath. It was obvious that this wasn't getting them anywhere, but where else could they go? The whirlpool had blocked their way in the back, but the path forward had led them in circles. There was no good option, and Era and their clients were as good as lost to them now. All in all, this were looking rather hopeless. Reopening his eyes, Ethfael turned back to face Erinn, forcing himself not to take out his anger on the Paras. ”If the whirlpool is still there, then what should we do?” Ethfael asked him, ”At least going this way will get us somewhere new.”

”But we're lost!” Erinn moaned, throwing his claws into the air in frustration, ”Why won't you accept that?! Just admit it! You don't know where we are!”

”Thank you for stating the obvious!” Ethfael spat back, ”Come on then, tell me something I don't know! We have to get back to the others, so I'm doing the best that I can! If you know of some better way then let me know!” They both glared at each other, and then Ethfael turned and continued forward, trying to allow his anger to simmer down. Erinn debated turning back but ended up following Ethfael, albeit reluctantly on the forward path.

At last, the path they were on ended, revealing an unexpected scene. To their relief, Era, Derrick, and Trillion were all in the area, which was a small clearing ringed on the edges by the coral, but they were currently facing off with a group of Qwilfish. The Pokemon were darting in and out, prickles out trying to spike the group and Pin Missles firing everywhere. ”Look out Era!” Trillion called, ”To your left!” Era swam upward quickly, narrowly avoiding the spikes of a Qwilfish, and Trillion fired a Mud Shot at the offending Pokemon.

”Look sharp!” Derrick called, dodging another Qwilfish's attack. Era shot a Swift Attack at the Qwilfish before she had to move to avoid the sharp quills of another one. There were only three Qwilfish, but it was clearly a difficult battle for the others. Erinn and Ethfael joined the fray quickly, coming to the aid of their companions. Ethfael fired a few Dragon Rages at the Qwilfish on the side, causing it to tear away down the path, and Erinn Slashed at another several times to the same effect. Ethfael used Extremespeed cutting in front of Erinn to hit the last one. It cried In outrage and fired its quills at Ethfael causing him to wince at they stuck in his tail. Angrily he fired an Icy Wind at the Qwilfish in defense. Unwilling to continue the fight, the Qwilfish slipped off with one final Glare, sending chills down Ethfael's spine.

”Ethfael!!!” Era said, rushing up to him. ”I'm so glad that you and Erinn are alright!” The Pichu's expression was joyful, and Ethfael felt better knowing that she was alright. ”We were so worried about you! When we couldn't find you we thought something had taken you away, but then we went back and saw the whirlpool and realized you must have been separated from us by that. Nothing that we tried would break the whirlpool though, so we just had to go forward and hope that we would find you along the way.” She smiled, ”I'm so glad we found you again.”

”As am I,” Ethfael said. They exchanged greetings amongst themselves for a few moments before they moved to the next issue, which was which way they should go. ”There was certainly nothing the way we came from,” Ethfael said pointing back the way that they had come from.

”Nor was there anything from our direction,” Trillion said, ”Just a long path which led us here.”

”Well if the two ways that we took both led us here, then it's a circle since there weren't any branches off of the pathway,” Era said, ”So all that will happen if we take one of the paths will be that we'll end up back at the whirlpool.”

”How about we go that way then?” Erinn asked, pointing to a narrow, almost unnoticeable passageway through the coral to the right.

Era blinked with surprise, looking at the path, not having noticed it before. ”Great find Erinn!” she said, ”We'll go that way!” Erinn smiled at his leader's praise, but Ethfael frowned slightly as they turned to go the way that Erinn had found.

The pathway was only wide enough for two small Pokemon to travel comfortably, so Derrick and Trillion had to travel one after the other. Team MistMelody traveled in front, and their clients went behind. The coral was close enough to brush against them and it was rather uncomfortable for the larger Pokemon. Era traveled up front, and Erinn and Ethfael traveled side by side, but things were still a little tense between them.

As they walked, the Erinn was hit on the side by something, straight into Ethfael. The Dratini staggered and looked at Erinn quizzically. ”Was there any reason for that?” he asked Erinn.

”Something pushed me!” Erinn protested, ”Calm down! You saw it, right?” he asked Derrick, who was behind him.

”I didn't see anything,” Derrick replied. Ethfael gave Erinn a scrutinizing look but said nothing.

They continued along their way, but in only a few moments I happened again. This time Erinn was knocked into Ethfael entirely, falling onto the Dratini. ”Would you stop that?” Ethfael asked, his temper beginning to flare again.

”I swear, it's not me!” Erinn said, ”Something's hitting me.” He was bewildered as to what the source of it was, but Ethfael remained skeptical.

This continued to occur every few paces or so, until at last Ethfael's temper broke again. ”The least you could do,” he said, ”Is show a bit of respect for your captain. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be on this Rescue Team!”

Erinn's anger had peaked as well, and he was, by this point, tired of taking insults from Ethfael, ”Well if it weren't for you, this Rescue Team would be a lot better!” he retorted, not caring about his harsh words.

Era turned around, unable to ignore their bickering any longer, ”Erinn, Ethfael, what's going on?” she asked, ”Why are you fighting? A Rescue Team doesn't fight with one another, we're a family.”

”Well I don't want anything to do with him!” Erinn said.

”The feeling is mutual,” Ethfael replied. They glared at each other, neither backing down.

”Please stop!” Era pleaded with them, ”We can't fight now, we just can't!”

At that moment they heard a sigh from above, and all five of them looked up. There was Manaphy, looking down on them mournfully. ”If you can't get along yourselves, then there's no way that you can help someone else with their problems,” Manaphy shook his head, ”You need to learn too. Come find me once you've learned what it's like to be in someone else's place.”

”Manaphy wait! Era shouted, This isn't-!” Era's voice was cut off as there was a bright flash leaving Team MistMelody unconscious, floating in the water, and Manaphy nowhere to be found.

”Oh...What happened?” Era moaned as she opened her eyes. Her surroundings were different, they were in another clearing type space, and she felt oddly heavier than usual, especially her arms. Blinking her eyes blearily, Era gasped, she didn't have arms, she had claws! Bright orange claws just like a Paras, just like... ”Erinn?” she said, bewildered. Why do I look like Erinn?”

”You're awake!” Came a familiar voice, and Derrick and Trillion came rushing over to greet her. ”Who are you?” Derrick asked, Manaphy Heart Swapped all of you so-”

”What???” Era cried, ”Oh no, I'm sorry, Manaphy was here but we didn't get him to help you... Awkwardly she began treading water with her many legs to move about, uncertain of her motion being in a body so foreign to her own.

”Calm down,” Trillion said gently, ”It's alright Era, or at least it sounds like it's you Era.

”Yes, yes, I'm Era, but it's not alright,” she said, gesturing with her claws and succeeding in hitting herself in the process. ”If we hadn't have been fighting Manaphy would have helped you.”

”We're all in the same situation now,” Derrick said, ”I think we can call it even.”

Nearby another stifled moan was heard, and the three of them turn to look at who was awakening. Ethfael blinked a few times, feeling slightly groggy, the last thing he recalled was a bright flash and Manaphy, and now... He blinked, startled as he realized that something was strange. His body didn't feel quite right. He was smaller and had...arms and legs??? Tentatively he moved each one slightly. Yes, they were arms and legs of a bright yellow color... Then it clicked Manaphy had used Heart Swap on them, and now he was inside Era's body. ”How very peculiar,” he murmured, moving his hands and legs, and finding that they propelled him through the water.

Era watched, feeling very peculiar as she watched her own body moving around by itself before her very eyes, like a reflection that had taken on a life of its own. ”Over here,” Trillion said, drawing the attention of Ethfael. ”Who are you?”

”Ethfael,” he said, swimming over to the others, and shooting a none too pleasant look at Erinn, or at least who he thought was Erinn. ”We've been Heart-Swapped, haven't we?”

”Yes,” Era said, ”Erinn must be in your body Ethfael, since you're in mine.”

”Era?” Ethfael asked in surprise, immediately apologetic for having glared at her, ”That's you?”

”Yes,” she replied, ”We lost Manaphy...”

The sadness on her face, even though it was with Erinn's borrowed features, was still enough to cause Ethfael to regret his actions. ”I'm sorry,” he said, as much to Derrick and Trillion as it was to Era, ”If I hadn't lost my temper this wouldn't have happened.”

Era shook her head, ”It's not any fault of just one of us, it's the fault of all of us.”

A sharp gasp signaled Erinn's awakening to the rest of the group. He had opened his eyes to find that he had lost all feeling in his claws and his legs. Then as he looked down he found that they weren't there, instead there was just a long something that was mostly white, but with blue visible on each side. Desperate for motion, Erinn wiggled furiously and found that it moved him, although not in the way that he was used to. This was far too strange for the Paras and he moaned. ”What's going on? Where did my body go?”

”Strictly speaking, it went nowhere,” Trillion said, and Erinn turned to find Era, Derrick, Trillion, and...himself? ”Manaphy Heart Swapped all of you, so you're just like myself and Derrick now.”

”This is so confusing!” Erinn said, ”Who's body am I in then?”

”That would be mine,” Ethfael said bluntly, ”And you do realize that there's no need to squirm like that, don't you? Just a wiggle now and then is enough to keep you afloat.”

”ETHFAEL?” Erinn said, ”You're in Era's body???

”That's right,” Era said awkwardly moving forward, still unused to Erinn's body, ”And I'm in yours Erinn. Manaphy Heart Swapped us because we were fighting, just like Derrick and Trillion, and told us that we should find him once we learned our lesson...”

Erinn was confounded by seeing his body moving without him in it, but gave up on trying to comprehend it. Ethfael, on the other hand, was resentful of the fact that Erinn was in his body, it made him look like a fool to see his body writhing like a worm. With a sigh, he twitched his ears, it couldn't be helped. With surprising, Ethfael felt something build up inside him that was warm, far too warm for his comfort. Instinctively, Ethfael channeled it to his cheeks, and electrical sparks flew from them. Everyone around him winced as the electricity coursed through them, Era feeling it more than the others, unused to electricity hurting her. ”Careful of that,”she said, wincing at the residual sparks that shocked her, ”Water conducts electricity which means that you hurt us too. All you have to do when a charge comes through you is spread it throughout your body. That gives you an energy boost too,” she instructed, smiling when she finished. ”Something every young Pichu learns.”

”I hate to seem impatient,” Derrick said, ”And I know you just got Heart Swapped and all, but we do have to find Manaphy again.

”No, you're right of course,” Era said, turning to look at their clients. ”We won't let this set us back, we're not going to rest until you both at least are back to normal. Aside from being a Paras, Era looked just as she always did when she decided something. A determined glint was in her eye, and she took the lead, a little slower than normal thanks to Erinn's strange assortment of legs, but steadily. Ethfael swam up next to her, pleased at his mobility, and Erinn went behind, still wiggling fiercely in order to move. Derrick and Trillion followed suit, swimming more slowly for the benefit of the still adjusting Team MistMelody.

As they traveled Ethfael found himself shoved into Era, rather violently since he wasn't used to his minute size. ”Sorry,” he said, rubbing his head, the impact having hurt him more than Era. ”Something pushed me,” Realizing what he said he turned back to Erinn, trying to ignore the fact that Erinn was still squirming about in his body. ”I apologize Erinn,” he said, dipping his head, ”It seems you were right.” Just then he was hit from behind, and fell face first into Trillion.

”Be careful there,” Trillion said, righting Ethfael carefully, ”You're going to get hurt if you keep that up.”

Era shook her head, ”No, I found the source of our problem,” she said pointing, ”It's them.” The others turned to look, but none of them could tell what she was talking about. ”Look closely, they camouflage very well.” Then the others spotted a pair of Corsola, barely visible against the coral. The two Pokemon were giggling quietly, and didn't notice the eyes of the group that rested on them. Era focused, trying to remember how Erinn prepared his attacks, and then blinked with surprise as she felt a power surge up through her body. Opening her mouth to let it out, Era released a Psybeam which missed the Corsola, but hit the coral above them, causing it to fall on their heads. The Corsola blinked with surprise, and then simultaneously stuck their tongues out and began swimming rapidly around them, creating a Whirlpool.

”Ethfael,” Erinn said quietly, ”Tell me how to use that attack where you breathe fire.”

”Dragon Rage? You just-” he was cut off by another electricity jolt which he tried to fired at the Corsola, missing terribly and hitting Trillion instead. ”I'm so sorry!” Ethfael said to him.

Trillion blinked, ”Sorry for what?”

Derrick grinned despite the chaos, using Confusion on the Corsola, which caused them to crash into each other. ”It's a good thing you hit Trill,” he said, ”He's a Marshtomp, remember? Part Ground means no problem with Electricity.”

”Oh, yes,” Ethfael said, breezing over his mistake, ”Well anyways Erinn, it's just like your Psybeam, but with fire, try doing the same thing that you do with Psybeam.”

Erinn nodded, and then shot a huge burst of flame towards the Corsola, causing them to stop, and protest. ”Hold on a minute, that's going too far!” said one.

”Yeah!” chimed the other, ”We're just teasing, so take it easy!”

The entire group was stunned into silence, but Trillion came forward after a pause. Coughing awkwardly he apologized, ”I am truly sorry,” he said, ”But we thought that you intended to harm us.”

The two Corsola looked at each other, and then burst out laughing. ”No wonder Manaphy Heart Swapped all of you!” the first crowed.

”If you're that mistrusting of people, you need to solve a few problems individually too!” the second added.

”No one here likes to fight,” the first explained for their benefit, ”Manaphy tells us we should all get along.”

”What about those Qwilfish then?” Derrick said, clearly skeptical of them.

”Well,” the second Corsola said, slightly more humbly, ”There are the odd exception, but Manaphy normally helps them understand before too long.”

”We're sorry,” Era said to the pair, ”We won't bother you any longer, and we won't attack you again.” Truthfully she was quite pleased to avoid the fight; democracy was a far better alternative.

The Corsola both smiled, ”She's a bright one,” the first Corsola said.

”That's the way you should think,” the second added.

”Anyway,” the first said, turning to leave, ”We have to get going. See you!”

”And don't worry, the second Corsola told them before following, ”Manaphy isn't mean, so you'll be sure to find him soon if you keep getting along. You seem nice, so that shouldn't be a problem, right?” Then with a last wave the Corsola turned and headed back down the path.

”Well...That was...” Ethfael said, searching for the right words.

”Really weird!” Erinn said, finishing the sentence. ”What did they expect us to think when they made that whirlpool? That it was some sort of a game?” He shook his head angrily, ”Some people...”

”Calm down,” Era said gently, ”It's not a bad thing if they don't want to fight, just don't be too trusting.”

Erinn frowned, ”If you say so Era, but they're still a bit strange for my taste.”

They continued as before, slightly more hopeful from the Corsola's advice. They were making better time now that the members of Team MistMelody were adjusting to being Heart Swapped, but and soon the path widened and they traveled more comfortably in a cluster. The surroundings began to change, and the coral began to take on several shades of blue, but the other colors vanished. ”I wonder if that means we're getting closer,” Derrick said, ”It's like everything is Manaphy colored here.”

Trillion chuckled at Derrick's comment. ”You could say that,” was his reply, ”I'm going to take it as a good sign.” They continued onward and the blues of the coral deepened so that they matched the sapphire coloring of the sea itself. The glow from the coral was softer here, but there was still a sort of dim light visible. Then, without warning, the coral went dark, and they were left in complete blackness.

”Whoa! What's going on here?!” Erinn shouted, crashing into someone, or something.

”It's just me, calm down,” Derrick said, groping around in the darkness for Erinn. He heard a thunk as his hand hit something and then a groan from Erinn. ”Ha! Found you. Hold onto my hand.”

”How??” came the muffled response, ”Ethfael doesn't have any hands!”

”What do you think I use my tail for?” came Ethfael's voice from a few feet away, ”It's not just a decoration.” Ethfael swam forward careful and crashed into something larger than himself.

”Ethfael?” came Era's voice next to his ear, ”Is that you?” She gingerly felt around him with her claw, recognizing the shape of her own body's ears almost instantly. ”Oh good, it is you.”

”Where have you all disappeared to?” Trillion's voice called from some distance away, ”Hello? Is there anyone there?”

”You're going the wrong way!” Ethfael called back, ”We're all over this way!”

There was silence for a moment, and then, ”How about now, am I closer?”

The other four winced at the shout from such close range. ”You're practically on top of us!” Erinn said, causing Trillion quiet down. ”So...” Erinn said, ”How are we going to move if we can't even see each other, let alone the coral?”

”We have to work together if we want to do this,” Era said, keeping her voice steady, ”Can anyone see anything at all? There were murmurs of no from the others, and Era sighed, thinking of what they could do. There were no Chinchou or Lanturn around to conveniently provide them with light, so they'd have to do something else. ”Well...” she said, ”We can make light, but it will be dangerous, and very trying for Ethfael.

”I can do it,” Ethfael said with determination, ”Just tell me what it is that I should do.”

”Alright,” Era said, ”Then here's what we're going to do. Erinn, Derrick, you two back up a bit and I'm going to go with you, and then Trillion, you need to be in front of us. Once that happens Ethfael, you need to let the electricity that is stored in your electrical sacks to come out. It's not hard, just don't block the electricity, and don't aim it in any direction, then it should create a light as the sparks come off of you, to let us see at least a little bit. She paused as the got themselves into position which took a few minutes and a great deal of pushing and shoving. ”This will only work for a few minutes, if that long,” Era warned, ”So we need to travel quickly to find light.” Then Ethfael began letting off sparks, and too their delight they found that it created some visibility, if only a little bit. ”Come on,” Era said, ”Let's hurry!”

They swam more quickly than before out of necessity, Ethfael lighting the way with the sparks from his cheeks. It took a lot more out of him than he had expected, especially due to his inexperience with a Pichu's attacks, but he was determined that he would not stop until he couldn't take any more since the entire group was counting on him to stop them from being plunged into darkness once more. The coral pathway was even more confusing than before and they all were grateful for Era's idea since it was clear that the endeavor would be hopeless without a light.

”Why'd it get so difficult all of a sudden?” Erinn asked, dodging a low-hanging piece of coral. ”It's like something doesn't want us to get through.”

”Perhaps Manaphy is testing us,” Trillion mused, ”He said that we all needed to learn to work together, and there's no possible way that we could be getting through something like this individually. Except Ethfael maybe, if he was lucky.

”Or maybe,” Derrick said as a piece of coral hit him in the head, ”We've just got really bad luck.”

”Stay optimistic!” Era chided him, ”Things aren't always easy, but that doesn't mean that they won't get better.” Sure enough, after a few more turns the coral began to thin out slightly, and while they all still got a few bumps and bruises, it wasn't nearly as bad as it was before. ”See!” Era said brightly, ”Things aren't all bad.”

As they continued traveling onward, Ethfael began to grow weary. He began to travel more slowly, causing Trillion to run into him a few times, and the latter began to regard Ethfael with some concern. ”Are you alright Ethfael?” Trillion asked him.

”Fine,” Ethfael managed to grunt out, his strength fading quickly.

”At least let me lend you a hand if you're going to keep it up,” Trillion said, picking up Ethfael in his hand.” Ethfael nodded his unspoken thanks and continued concentrating to keep the sparks flying through the water. They moved at a quick pace, Trillion carrying Ethfael, and then Ethfael spotted a light in the distance and breathed a sigh of relief at the sight. He allowed the sparks dancing on his cheeks to dissipate and closed his eyes tiredly.

”Ethfael?” Era called, swimming up to the front, ”Are you alright?”

”I'm okay,” he said, looking at her. ”I just need to rest.”

”Here,” Erinn said helpfully, taking an Oran berry out of the bag with his mouth and putting it in Ethfael's hand.

Ethfael smiled and ate the berry, feeling better with its healing juices inside him. ”Thank you.” he said gratefully. Frowning, Ethfael apologized, ”I'm sorry for what I said before Erinn, I was just angry.”

Erinn smiled, ”No hard feelings,” he replied, ”I said some things I didn't mean too since I was angry.”

Era grinned, ”I'm glad you could make up,” she said, hugging her two teammates. ”Now come on guys, we've got to keep going.”

The group followed the light in the distance, letting it help them avoid hitting the coral. The closer they got, the brighter the light grew, but suddenly it started to move around rapidly causing the group some confusion. ”Something must be going on up there,” Trillion said, ”Shall we see what it is?”

When they drew close enough to the light to tell what its source was, they discovered a Lanturn in combat with a Mantine. The Mantine was clearly at the upper hand, and Derrick decided to step in and intervene on behalf of the smaller Lanturn. ”Hey, pick on someone your own size,” he said, using Confusion on the Mantine. The Manatine turned and rounded on him, shooting a Bubblebeam at Derrick. Erinn came in front of Derrick and shot a Dragon Rage at him, and then Era completed it by using Giga Drain on the Mantine. She gasped with surprise as energy filled her from the Mantine and then grinned. The Mantine realized that it was outnumbered, and turned tail, racing off down the path ahead. The Lanturn steadied itself, watching them guardedly. ”It's alright,” Derrick said, ”We won't hurt you.”

”Thank you,” the Lanturn said to them, deciding that they could be trusted, ”That Mantine wouldn't let up. I was afraid that I was finished.” The Lanturn looked quite relieved, and then suddenly, she grew business-like. ”Now, it's my turn to help you. Manaphy sent me here to take you to him. He's looking forward to seeing you.”

The group was astonished, and broke into smiles all around. ”Not any more than we're looking forward to seeing him,” Erinn said, and the others nodded in agreement.

”Thank you so much!” Era said, ”We've been searching for him for a whle now.”

The Lanturn giggled happily, ”I'm sure,” she said, ”Follow me!” The friendly Pokemon led them down the path, to a place where the coral lit up again, glowing the same blues from before the coral had gone dark. ”Here you are,” she said, ”Say hi to Manaphy for me!”

Together they all went forward into a cavern surrounded by the coral, making it into something like a cave. Once inside, they were greeted by a welcome sight; Manaphy was waiting for them. ”Hi~!” he said, waving to them, ”I've been watching you, and it looks like you've learned your lesson, haven't you?” They nodded humbly, all of them knowing that Manaphy had meant well, even if it had been in a way that was...different than would be expected. ”Oh good! I'm so happy!” Manaphy said, spinning around in delight. ”If you help your friends, you make more and more friends until everyone's your friend! Then Manaphy stopped and regarded them closely, ”I'll change you back now! Get ready everyone!” Then once again there was a bright flash.

~~~~
Era blinked open her eyes again, feeling slightly groggy, but the feeling faded away as she realized that she was herself again. She smiled and looked around spotting Manaphy bouncing about in the corner contentedly. He caught her eye and winked and then pointed to Ethfael and Erinn who both were arousing themselves with equal surprise and happiness. ”Welcome back!” Manaphy said dancing around them.
”Thank you Manaphy!” Era said, hugging him.
Manaphy looked surprised for a moment, and then giggled and hugged her back. ”No problem!”
”It means a lot to us,” Ethfael said.
Erinn had fallen on his back and was struggling to get up, so Ethfael gave him a push to help him up. Erinn nodded with thanks and they both swam over to Era and Manaphy. ”Yeah,” Erinn said, ”Thanks Manaphy!” Manaphy giggled again, and they all laughed.
”Wait a moment,” Ethfael said, ”What happened to Trillion and Derrick?”
Manaphy laughed again, ”Those sleepyheads are still over there, they just haven't woken up yet. The four of them swam over to the unconscious Kadabra and Marshtomp and Manaphy poked at both of them. ”Wake up wake up! Time to wake up!” With a groan, the two woke up and rubbed their heads.
”Wow...I feel like I just got hit in the head with a rock...” Derrick said, then his eyes widened as he realized that he was back to normal. ”Wait a sec....I'M ME AGAIN!!!” He spun around and then raced over to Trillion, ”Trill, we're back to normal!!!”
Trillion, who had been readjusting himself awkwardly, opened his eyes with surprise as he realized that what Derrick had said was true. ”Oh splendid!” He said, smiling, ”I have to admit I was beginning to fear I was stuck in your body for good.”
”Ugh...Don't remind me,” Derrick said. ”I'm just glad I'm me again.”
”Well then,” Era said, catching the attention of their clients. ”I guess it's time to go.”
”You're back to normal too!” Derrick said joyfully. ”Wonderful!”
Pushing past his excited friend, Trillion addressed Era's comment. ”Yes,” he said, ”I suppose you are right.”
Era nodded, ”Alright, everyone come over here.” They gathered around Era and she pulled the Rescue Team Badge out of the bag. ”Thank you once again Manaphy. We're so grateful for your help,” Era said warmly.
”Don't thank me,” Manaphy said, ”Thank yourselves! You worked as a team, and that's what matters!” Manaphy giggled and waved as Era held up the Badge, ”Bye friends! Come and visit again sometime!” Then the Badge shimmered with light, and Team MistMelody and their clients were gone.
((Excellent mission! Great themes and great conflicts, not to mention you wrote way over the required amount. Good job~))
The team arrived back at the guild, soaking wet but at least back in their own bodies. Some water that came along with the teleporation pooled on the ground about them.
"Man, you guys are the greatest!" Derrisk grinned, examining his limbs, spinning around as if checking the fins on his back were still there. Trill calmly squeezed the water out of his whispers and his large bushy tail.
"I must thank you dearly for all you have done for us." He told the team, bowing slightly. "We'll come back with the promised rewards tomorrow- you deserve it."
Later on that day a few Pokemon showed up, all wanting to join Team Mistmelody. Three Pokemon approached them. A Staryu lead them, silent, its gem flashing brightly. Behind it came a familiar Slowbro, crawling along at a barely perceptible pace. A Corsola came in beside him, hopping slightly in happiness.
Early next morning a knock sounded at the door of their Team room, and when they opened it they would see a familiar Lanturn. By its side floated a small blue Pokemon, oddly resembling Manaphy, but...not quite. The Lanturn explained that the small water type was a Phione, and that it had been sent by Manaphy to the team in order to learn more about the world.
"Manaphy hopes that you won't mind taking Phione in." The Lanturn told them. The small blue Pokemon offered the team a deep green gem. Within the enchanted TM was the move Skill Swap.
Early afternoon the clients finally came back, holding a small intricate box. Both Trill and Derrick were grinning quite broadly as they presented it. When the Team opens it, they would find several valuable items within.
Taking up the bulk of the box was a beautiful semi-transparent yellow stone, its surface polished until it was gleaming. If one looked closely, sparks danced within its heart. It was a Thunderstone.
"We figured you wouldn't need it for some time Era, but when you are ready to, we would be honoured if you would find our gift useful." Derrick explained with a grin.
The entire box was lined with a silky, shiny material, its colour seemed to shift around, never staying still. It was a Mirage Cloak, designed to protect those of the Dratini line from powerful Ice attacks.
The last of the items was a small necklace, a simply charm at the end of a string. The charm itself was carved out of some sort of smooth white stone in the rough shape shape of a Paras.
The clients explained that it was made from an everstone, and it was for Erinn, to protect him from the mushrooms that grew on his back. Trill had done some research and learned about the nature of a Paras's evolution- that the mushrooms kills their host and take over. They hoped that the Everstone would help.
After leaving the bag of PD with the team, the Kadabra and the Marshtomp waved their goodbyes and left.
((Wow! Thanks so much Cherry! I'm glad you liked it. ^ ^ ))
Team MistMelody took a well-deserved rest once their clients left, promising to return tomorrow. Their adventures that day had been enough to satisfy a week of exploring even though they had taken place in only a few hours. Shortly after they returned though, they were faced with three anxious newcomers from their journey who seemed to want to join the team. The other two Pokemon clearly unwilling to share the Corsola's enthusiam watched as he did the talking. "Hey hey! Remember me? We ran into each other on Mana Reef! Do you think I could join your Rescue Team?" The Slowbro appeared to be slightly bothered by this statement, and looked at them plaintively as if to say, 'Don't take him, take me.' The Staryu's gem pulsed a few times, but it seemed to watch them, waiting for a response.
Era looked at Ethfael and Erinn, "What do you think? They'd all make good additions to the team." The Pokemon seemed to straighten up at Era's praise, and she looked at them approvingly.
"Where'd the Slowbro come from?" Ethfael asked curiously.
"He attacked us and confused Era to the point that she attacked me," Erinn said, sulking slightly.
Era nodded, unable to contradict the facts, "It's true, but I don't think he's a bad Pokemon. It was our fault for disturbing him in the first place."
"So we have a fighter, a loaf-off, and a trickster," Ethfael said under his breath, "Excellent." Era hushed him but luckily none of the others seemed to have heard him.
"We have to think about this for a little while, Era told them, "Could you all come back tomorrow? We'll have made our decision by then." The trio nodded and left the Guild until the next day.
After a good night's sleep, and lots of talk about which recruit to choose, Team MistMelody awoke early in the morning to a knocking on the door. "Is that them already?" Erinn asked, having been awoken from his sleep by the noise.
"I'll go see," Era said, heading over to the door with the others not far behind her. They were surprised to find the Lanturn and a Pokemon that looked like Manaphy waiting outside. After Lanturn explained the circumstances to them though, things made far more sense than they had at first. "If Manaphy would like us to then we'll be happy to oblige." Era told Lanturn, "Besides, Phione looks like a good addition to our team." To the small Pokemon holding the TM out to her she said, "You're Phione, huh?" Phione nodded and she continued, "We'd be happy to let you join our team if you'd like to."
"Yay!" Phione cried, bobbing up and down, "Friends!"
"Alright," Era said, taking the young Pokemon by the hand, "Then welcome to our Rescue Team!"
"Rescue Team!" Phione repeated happily and they all laughed, Phione's happiness easily catching on to the rest of them.
Just then, the group of prospective recruits from the day before appeared, as eager as before. "Welcome back," Era said, "We've thought over our choices and decided that-"
"Wait," Ethfael said suddenly, "Would you like to be a member of Team MistMelody as well?" He asked the lingering Lanturn who looked as if he'd been caught trying to sneak away.
"Well..." the Lanturn said awkwardly, "That was part of the reason why I volunteered to bring Phione here, but if you've already got so many others..." she trailed off.
"Then stay, Ethfael told her kindly, "We'll have a quick discussion and then we'll tell all of you our decision."
After a few minutes of chatting by the team and much bouncing about by Phione, they turned back to the others. "Thank you all so much," Era said, "But we can only take one of you, and we've decided to invite you to join the team," she directed the last statement at the Lanturn, who looked astonished.
"Me? Really??? Oh thank you so much!" she said with excitement, "I'll do my best!"
The others turned to leave sadly, and Era waved goodbye to them from the door, sighing as they disappeared out of sight. "The worst part of this is turning recruits down," she said sadly, her ears drooping, "The looks on their faces when they leave are so dejected..."
Phione circled over to Era, concern evident in its eyes. "Sad..." it said with a frown, "No sad. Happy!" It prodded Era with its hand and looked at her pleadingly.
"Alright," Era said, patting Phione on the head, "I won't be sad, we have you and Lanturn now, so it will be alright."
Phione smiled brightly, "Right right!" It hugged her and then recommenced bouncing about the room.
The Lanturn smiled, her lights glimmering in a reflection of her mood, "My name is Sereni," she said to them, "Thank you again for letting me join your Rescue Team."
"It was our pleasure, I assure you," Ethfael told her.
That afternoon, after things had seemed to settle down, Derrick and Trillion came back, rewards in hand. They were quite pleased to see the Kadabra and Marshtomp again and were amazed by the things which they had brought.
Era took the Thunderstone out of the box, feeling an almost electric attraction to the stone. Someday when she evolved this could make her reach that place which many Pikachu never reached, and evolve into a Raichu. "Thank you so much," she said to them, "I'll keep it until I can use it and always remember you when I think of it."
Next it was Ethfael's turn to be astounded as he realized what lay around the edges of the box. A Mirage Cloak, evidently intended for him was there, and he took it out gingerly, carefully examining it. "It's beautiful," he said to Derrick and Trillion, "Thank you, I am certain I will find great use for it."
Last was Erinn who peeked into the box to find a necklace bearing a charm similar to a Paras in appearance. Removing it, he looked at it closely, wondering as to what it's purpose was. When Derrick and Trillion explained that to him, he quickly put the necklace on, admiring the dangling Paras charm which would ensure his own survival. "Thank you for remembering me," he said to them, "I'll treasure it always."
Derrick and Trillion also left behind the promised payment, which Ethfael put into the bag. "Thank you again!" he called as their friends left, "We'll never forget you!"
"Maybe we'll meet again someday," Era said, "But until then, farewell!"
Erinn gasped realizing that they were almost too far from earshot to hear what he had to say. Raising his voice, Erinn shouted, to the figures in the distance, "Goodbye!"
They returned back to their room where Sereni and Phione were waiting with happy hearts, glad to have seen their friends once more and happy with the gift that had been given to them as rewards for their mission. As Erinn began to chat with Sereni, Era turned to Ethfael, "Things are going to be a little busier from now on, aren't they?" she said.
Just then there was a cracking sound, and everyone turned to look finding Phione dancing around the incubating eggs. "Crack crack crack~!" it sang. The others rushed over to the egg that was hatching and stood around it. Soon the crack that had formed down the egg widened with another crack, and then the egg split in two, revealing a baby Sandshrew staring up at them. It made a contented crooning noise and crawled over between Era and Ethfael where it curled up into a ball abruptly and fell asleep. "Yay yay!" Phione said, "Friends!"
Ethfael looked down at the Sandshrew beside him and then back up at Era. "Yes, I think things might be a lot busier from now on.
Kaiyou
Kaiyou sprinted on all fours, moving across the dunes as fast as possible. The sand was hot beneath his feet, scorching the skin that touched it. Though this wasn't exactly the most comfortable way to travel, he knew it was necessary. He didn't know the waters here well, and, for all he knew, danger lurked around every corner. No, it was best that he kept to the land until he had a better option. The water was just too dangerous for travel.
He hadn't run a mission solo before, but he'd been on plenty of missions in the past with various members of his team; this mission couldn't be simpler... Well, simpler in theory, that is. In truth, he was here on a very important basis.
Two of the Pokemon in their guild were on death's doorstep, gravely poisoned while completing a mission of their own. The news was all over the guild, circulating through the voices and documents of every team. Notices had been slipped under every door, praying for some sort of response.
Unfortunately for the two guild members involved, lesser-ranked teams had been deemed unprepared for the mission, and the majority of higher-ranked individuals were away on business of their own. In the end, he'd been left to find the cure for the females of Team Polaris, and had been the first and only one to respond...
The first victim was someone only known as Chronicler. He didn't know much about her, only that she needed help. He couldn't say he wasn't determined to give that help, either.
The second victim was a Houndour by the name of Morana; the team's leader. He'd met the girl before, though they hadn't exactly parted on the best of terms.
In truth, he'd been new to the guild, and mistook her for the enemy in a battle. A well-placed Hydro Pump, and... well, it certainly hadn't ended well. The poor Fire-type and her partner, a Larvitar, hadn't been terribly pleased. Though he'd apologized to their team, he still felt responsible for that incident.
Maybe this was the time to repay them for his mistake. ...No. This mission wasn't for ridding himself of personal guilt. That had to be the most selfish thing he'd ever thought of. This was to save Morana's life, not his conscience!
Frustrated with himself, the Marshtomp carried on, running through the dunes of sand.
The Marshtomp leaped high over a small pool of water, lifting his heels into the air as he jumped.
The Krabby wasn't far behind him, it's claws snapping rather menacingly. Though he hated to turn tail and run from a fight, there just wasn't enough time.
Morana was counting on him to complete the mission, and he couldn't let her down. He couldn't let his team down... let himself down...
He let out a sharp yelp of pain, feeling something pinch hard on his leg, and pulling him up short in his leap. He snapped hurriedly out of his thoughts, turning to look at the Krabby that now held him tightly in his grasp.
The Marshtomp kicked hard, feeling the Krabby release him with a surprised, and possibly pained click of it's pincers, and the Marshtomp hurriedly leaped from it's grasp. He swung his arm around, throwing a powerful Ice Punch into the crab-Pokemon's face, and grabbing the edges of it's shell between his short, stubby fingers. Held like this, it wouldn't be able to hurt him, and he swung it into the ocean with a swift throw.
The sand slipped into the waters, and a final Muddy Water sent the now sand-filled current reeling back from the shoreline. The Krabby most likely wouldn't make it back to the shore for hours, and Kai felt that it was safe to carry on.
The Marshtomp twisted, examining his leg. It was already bruising, and he felt that he'd probably damaged his foot a little bit, but the Krabby's strike hadn't broken the skin.
With no danger of infection, he tested his foot, letting himself put weight on the heel once more. It hurt, but it didn't feel THAT bad. He'd be able to run on it for the time being, and he could deal with any damage later.
Moving a little slower due to the injury to his heel, the Marshtomp once again set off down the beach, limping slightly as he ran.
Kaiyou waded through the shallows, moving into deeper water. The salty liquid was cool on his skin, enveloping his body as he slipped into it's embrace.
His head ducked under the water, and his eyes opened wide, blinking repeatedly to adjust to the salty tang of the ocean. He felt his senses kick in, his sonar beginning to scan the ocean around him for other bodies and land masses.
He moved fluidly through the salt water, diving deeper. His strong hind legs kicked at the water, propeling him further. It felt strange, to be swimming freely again, but, at the same time, it felt good. He twisted in the water, his stubby fingers feeling the sand beneath him.
A small Goldeen weaved past him, staring at him as it circled 'round. He blinked at it, confused.
"Hi!" It squeaked, looking surprisingly cheerful. It's voice was high-pitched. Soft. Most likely, the Goldeen was still young, judging from that, combined with it's tiny size. It swam in a swift circle, tapping his forehead with an orange-dappled fin.
Impatient, and determined to complete his mission, the Marshtomp nudged the little fish away from him. "Bye." He told it firmly, swimming off, and continuing to move into the deep.
He could sense the Goldeen following, swimming swiftly along behind him. It gripped his injured ankle in it's fins, causing Kaiyou to pause, wincing.
"Please remove yourself from my person." He sighed heavily, his voice remaining firm. He really wasn't great with kids. They were annoying and dependant. Surely this thing had a parent somewhere...?
He turned around, about to swim off again, and found himself face to face with the same little Goldeen. "Hi again! Want t-"
The Marshtomp held up a hand, interrupting the child. "Look, kid. My friend's in danger, okay? I don't have TIME to help you right now. Maybe another time, okay?" He told it sternly, swimming around it and continuing off.
The water was dappled with light, twisting weirdly across the sandy bottom. If he'd had the time, it might have been nice to stop and watch, but as it was, his mad dash through the ocean's waters left no time to stop and admire the scenery.
"I can help! I can help!" Came the return of the squeaky voice. It seemed to split the Marshtomp's skull, that voice did. Irritating.
He ignored the Goldeen entirely, continuing to swim, but the voice continued. "You have a friend? I bet you have lots of friends! You're so cool!"
Well, at least it was only half-stupid.
"What's wrong with your friend? Did their parents ground them? They should know better than to sneak out alone!"
Nevermind. Definitely not an intelligent mind to go with that chalkboard-grinding voice.
At least it's strange ways seemed to confirm his thoughts; it was definitely young. Maybe around four years old? It wasn't terribly intelligent, as was usual, for a little child. He wasn't even sure of it's gender, at this point.
"Would you just leave me alone? I need to find Phione, and you're wasting my time."
The Goldeen seemed ecstatic at this, hurriedly swimming ahead of the Marshtomp. "OH! Your friends are sick-sick! Okay~" It squealed, seeming, if possible, even more annoying and energetic. "I know where to find Phione! Phi-Phi are easy-peasy to find! They're EVERYWHERE!"
It waved it's fins all around it, and Kai scanned the area with a swift sonar reading.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Granted, that there were a few stones nearby, but nothing terribly interesting.
He sighed heavily. "Look, if you know where Phione is, just take me to it. None of this 'everywhere' crap. My friend's life is at stake, here." He snapped impatiently, narrowing his eyes at the Goldeen.
It's bottom lip began to wobble, and it's body trembled. It looked as though it was about to cry, despite being underwater.
It swam away as fast as it's fins would carry it, wailing at an obnoxiously high pitch.
Just joyous. With his luck, the psychotic little thing would end up telling it's parents that he'd been abusive or something of the like. He swam off, determined to be out of the area before the freakish little fish returned. If he was lucky, he might run into Phione on his way.
Unfortunately for Kaiyou, luck was hard to come by.
"I haven't seen Phione here in over a year." The Corsola remarked quietly, turning to look at it's friend. "Have you, Micky?"
The second Corsola, just as ancient as the first bounced slightly in response, drooling.
"Yes, well, I suppose that settles it. Sorry, dear, but I'm afraid you'll just have to keep looking..." The pink, coral-like Pokemon told the Marshtomp, looking sincerely apologetic.
Kaiyou grimaced, looking desperately between the two. "Are you sure? You must have seen at least one! Can't you tell me anything that might help me?!" He pleaded, holding out his hands in desperation.
The Corsola looked at each other, and the female turned back to him with a frown. "Why do you want to find Phione, anyway?" She demanded to know. "Phione are peaceful; we've never had anyone from the guilds come to hunt one down before." Her tone seemed scathing, and the Marshtomp winced.
"I'm not here to hurt anyone, honest! I'm just here to get some magical dew drop thing and get out. My friend's been badly poisoned. She'll die if I don't get back in time!"
The female Corsola seemed surprised, but said nothing. Instead, the male spoke. Whereas he'd been drooling before he now seemed to behave almost... intelligently. "Your cause is a worthy one, but you won't find Phione here. If it's Phione Dew you're seeking, you'd be wise to search the reef."
His voice was calm and even, though crackling with age. He seemed surprisingly wise. Kaiyou could only guess that his former level of intelligence was an act, to deter others from identifying him, or something similar.
In any case, it was the mention of a reef that he found most interesting. He'd never heard of a coral reef in the area. "...Reef?" He questioned simply, noticing a little late that the male Corsola had already returned to it's previous, drooling state.
The female chuckled.
"Uhhh.... is he quite alright?" Kai asked quietly, staring at the male. He seemed a little bit... off.
"His mind comes and goes, Dearie. No need to fuss over it." She replied calmly, before continuing to answer his previous question. "As for the reef, you'll find it just past the edge of the sandbar to the South. The drop-off is quite steep, but the view is lovely. My hubbie and I visit quite often fo-"
Kai waved a hand to cut her off. "Sorry, sorry, but I REALLY don't have the time right now. Thank you for the help!" He told her hurriedly, before turning and swimming off in the said direction.
He steadily picked up speed, and was gone within a few moments, disappearing into the swift-moving surf.
The pair of Corsola glanced at each other, looking sad.
"Was that really necessary, Sweetie? He seemed so sincere..." The female asked softly.
The Goldeen rose up behind the Corsola, shaking the sand off it's body. "It's ALWAYS necessary. You know the rules. Outsiders must be destroyed."
The elderly Corsola sighed unhappily. "Outsiders must be destroyed..." The Water-type repeated sadly. She was too old for such senseless violence...
Kai scanned the water around him, flicking his fins to propel him forward.
The area around him appeared flat and barren, and though the water had certainly gotten deeper, he hadn't see any sort of sandbar, drop-off, OR reef. He wasn't exactly sure why, but he got the feeling that the Corsola had sent him astray. He'd wasted too much of his time searching here.
Morana and Chronicler needed the Phione Dew quickly, and this misguided charade was taking too long. He just didn't have the time to waste, and the fact seemed to eat him alive from the inside out.
He paused, looking around him one last time. Surely there must have been something... Something flickered in the distance, just at the very edge of his sonar.
He swam closer, trying to get within range. His sonar focused in, pulling tight around the object.
For a moment, he was purely confused. It wasn't that he didn't recognize the shape... He was just confused as to how a rock was bobbing up and down in seemingly calm waters. A little bit freaked out, and purely at a loss of where to go next, he moved in closer, swimming toward the strange, floating rock on the surface.
His head broke through the waves and he spluttered, gasping for breath. His lungs refilled, and he could feel water streaming out of his gills.
As he opened his eyes, he found himself floating alone, with no rock in sight. Maybe he'd been confused, because there was definitely no rock around him. In truth, he couldn't really see anything, other than the waves.... He'd ventured so far from shore.
The Water-type, genuinely ashamed of his failure, slashed angrily at the water with his arm, trying to figure out exactly where he was. He couldn't see any kind of landmark, and his sonar had already lost track of the course he'd taken. In the end, he decided just to pick a direction, and go with it. In all honesty, it couldn't really get worse. He just needed to find SOMETHING, ANYTHING, and maybe he could find his way back in time...
He let out a disheartened sigh, and ducked his head back underwater, gasping through his gills. He opened his eyes again, only to find himself face to face with an oddly familiar creature; in fact, it reminded him a lot of Gary, though more intelligent, most likely...
The Slowking waved a hand in front of his face, frowning. "You're not very bright, are you?" It sighed at him, frowning. "You ought to be more careful about who you take directions from in an area you're not accustomed to."
Kaiyou blinked. Several times. "W-wait! Who the hell are you, then? How can I trust you?" Kai demanded to know, poking the Slowking in the nose.
The dual Psychic-type waved his hand away, still frowning. Maybe his face was just stuck like that. It seemed a feasible explanation to him.
"You can trust me, simply because you have no other choice." He answered, staring at Kaiyou with his unnervingly blank eyes. "You have to get back to the shore; the one safe direction to travel. All other paths lead to death."
"Errr..... You're scaring me a little bit..." Kai admitted, backing up, he felt more than a little uncomfortable with the strange guy in front of him. What he wouldn't do to have Lumon with him just then...
"Look. You got tricked into coming to the outlands, Lad. The coral reef is the other way; you're headed straight for the open ocean. All sorts of trouble's gonna find you out there, I'll tell you that much."
Kai arched an eyebrow, rather suspicious. "Why would the Corsola trick me? They seemed nice enough, and so far you're just creeping me out."
The Slowking poked the Marshtomp in the stomach, pushing him back. "BECAUSE; the shore-residents are introverted. Closed-minded. Anything from outside their world is dangerous. It must be destroyed. Heaven knows how many times they've tried to kill my family, mate." The Slowking continued, waving a hand for the Marshtomp to follow. "Come on, Lad. I know you still don't trust me. but you've got no choice. Let's just try and find you some dry land."
Kai started to follow, before stopping dead, shaking his head vigorously. "No. I can't go back just yet. I need to find Phione!"
The Slowking looked at him strangely, tilting his head. "You don't look like you're in that sort o' trouble, Lad." He commented dryly.
"It's not for me, idiot! It's for my friends! If Morana and Chronicler don't get Phione Dew, they're going to die! I came here to get it for them.... I'm their only hope, at this point..." Kaiyou's voice faded, looking upset. He couldn't let the two die...
This mission was taking a turn for the worse, and he just didn't know what to do anymore. He felt lost. Entirely, and totally lost.
The Slowking stared at him a little bit, adjusting his strange, Shellder crown. It always struck Kaiyou as odd, to have the Shellder change form like that...
The Slowking popped the crown off his head, interrupting Kaiyou's trail of thought entirely, and causing the Marshtomp to yelp in shock.
The Slowking, calm and relaxed, simply reached inside his crown, and pulled out a piece of soggy, water-logged paper, before popping the crown right back onto his head.
He rolled up the paper, and handed it to Kai, who accepted it awkwardly, and staring at it as he held it between his fingers. It felt strange and sticky. Still stiff. ...In truth, it didn't seem to be wet at all. "Amazing... You used some sort of oil to coat the page, right? To water-proof it?" Kaiyou guessed.
The Psychic-type nodded. "It still has to be oiled on a regular basis, though. To keep the water from wearing through to the paper." He replied calmly.
Kai unrolled it carefully, trying not to smudge the oil around with his stubby fingertips. "What exactly is this thing, anyway?" He asked, staring at the paper. "Some sort of map?"
The Slowking nodded.
It was indeed a map; of the shoreline, to be specific. Every jut of land, every sandbar, and even the coral reef; it was all thoroughly marked out on the piece of paper. It was genius, how much data the Slowking had managed to cram into one map. Everything was writing in tiny handwriting, clear as day. It must have taken weeks to write everything out without smudging anything...
"You're... giving this to me?" He asked suddenly, looking up at the older Water-type.
The Slowking chuckled. "Obviously. I have the whole thing memorized and catelogged at home on my cave wall. I'll rewrite it another time." He answered, waving his hand, as he seemed to do only too often. He seemed to accompy his speech with hand gestures on a regular basis.
"So, Lad, the main point of this map, is that we, are HERE." The Slowking pointed at a spot on the map, being very precise in where he places the tip of his chubby, pink finger.
Kai's heart sank. They were so far from the shore that it might take another twenty minutes to return to the shore... And then he didn't even know where to go from there...
The Slowking must have recognized the look of desperation on the Marshtomp's face, because it was just moments later that he continued to talk, raising Kai's hopes in the process. "Which is actually not a bad thing. You seem reasonably strong." The Slowking noted. "There is a small bridge of shallow waters here. It's dangerous, but not as deadly as much of the waters around here. If you can follow the shallow waters safely, you should be able to reach the reef within fifteen minutes of steady swimming. There, you'll have a much better chance of finding Phione." He explained, moving his finger across the map to indicate Kaiyou's path.
Kai looked a little uncomfortable, though his spirits better than they'd been previously. "Why doesn't it show the bridge of land on this map...?" He questioned quietly, casting the Slowking a suspicious glance.
"Because it's very small, point of fact, and very secret. The locals here don't know much about it; too afraid, y'see. You might not even notice it, on passing. Just swim North for about five minutes, and turn. You'll be straight on the path to the coral reef."
He finished, rolling up the map in Kai's hands. "I wish you good luck on your travels." The strange, slightly confusing Slowking saluted him, and swam off toward what Kai now knew as deeper water.
"Uhhh.... Isn't that the wrong way?" He questioned cautiously.
"Not for me. My home is this way. The locals are bloody nuts, Lad." Came the reply.
Kaiyou sighed. Would no one in this area show any signs of sanity?
"You ARE a local!" He called out sharply, before swimming off toward what he had determined was North. The Slowking had helped him out, yeah, but he'd still rather not meet up with him again. Something just felt... off... about him.
The Marshtomp floated in the current, blasting the sand and water around him with sonar at every opportunity.
The water was alive with soundwaves, ringing in his ears. If there were any other Pokemon near, with any sort of underwater hearing, they'd be disoriented, hopefully enough to stay away from him. He didn't want to run into any more locals until he'd found the path to the reef.
He'd been swimming for a while, and he'd traveled further than expected, the current pushing him on. It was nearly dawning on the five minute mark, and he had yet to see the famed sandbar that the Slowking had spoken of. Sure, he'd said it was small, but even the slightest elevation in the ocean floor should have been noticable; picked up by sonar.
With a disgruntled hiss, the Marshtomp turned, facing the deeper water ahead.
The current was too swift for a proper evaluation with soundwaves, and it would be risky.
Pulling out the oil-slicked map, he unrolled it, peering once again at the carefully labelled areas. It seemed still in good shape, even unprotected by the Slowking's crown, as it had once been sheltered, and the words were easily visible, coated in wax.
He nodded to himself, reading over the map, and running his finger along the path. The terrain where he was swimming seemed identical to the place marked on the map, and he felt confident in crossing. It was possible that the current had simply swept away part of the sandbar, and he just couldn't notice it.
Rolling the map back up, he tucked it away, preparing to dive into the current. He would need every ounce of his energy for the swim across the jetstream, and the deeper water would easily sweep him away if he wasn't paying attention.
He inhaled deeply, and kicked his legs, his scarred fins propeling him straight into the current. Immediately, he could sense and feel the sharp, dangerous tug of the water, pulling him away from his goal. It took all of his concentration to focus, to keep on track, and not let himself be swept away.
He could sense other things in the current, too. Small Pokemon. Mainly fish-like ones, flashing by in the current. He supposed, if the shore was your target, the stream would carry you there pretty quick. However, he quickly realized that there were things larger than he in the current, and one of the was strikingly familiar, and very angry.
He stopped swimming, letting the current pull him away. He began to swim with it, instead of against it, barely escaping death at the pincers of a very large, and furious Kingler. It's claws were massive, and it's eyes gleaming with hatred.
Something told him that he'd made an enemy in throwing the Krabby off the beach, and now he was paying the price.
He swam faster, trying to use the current as a booster to escape the sharp, painful death that hounded him.
He felt a blunt strike once more to his ankle, and the Marshtomp cried out in pain, spinning to face the Kingler behind him.
However, as he turned, the current caught his body full force, knocking the breath from his body, and sending him down the jetstream with a flash of bubbles.
Kaiyou awoke, his eyes fluttering open.
He groaned softly, trying to regain feeling in his limbs as he rolled in the dry sand. He sputtered and coughed, clearing his lungs of anything that might have gotten lodged, though he had a feeling it was mainly sand in his throat.
He turned around, looking for any signs of the locals nearby, and found himself face to face with the male Corsola, blinking at him.
Though Corsola tended to look a lot alike, he felt determined that this was the same one he'd met before. He recognized the glazed look in it's eyes, and the old, scarred scratches on it's coral-like apendages.
It drooled rather stupidly, and Kaiyou frowned at him. "I know you're not stupid, so cut the act." He snapped at it, irritated. "Why'd you lie to me? Send me all the way out there? It's a wasteland, that's what it is. No reef anywhere!"
He continued to glare at the Water-type, who remained motionless and staring. Kai's angry expression faded. "Nevermind... Just... nevermind. I'll find Phione on my own. I'm not leaving until I have dew to bring back with me." He informed it, frowning.
He felt empty, depressed. Looking at the Sun in the sky, he wasn't sure how long he'd been out for, or where he was. Even the map he'd been given, rolled up tightly, and coated in wax, was gone, only fragments of mushy paper clinging to his skin.
He let his eyes slide shut for a moment, trying to regain his composure. This was the worst possible thing to happen; to be so lost, so confused... when his guildmates needed his help. If he didn't find help soon, they'd be dead. Maybe they already were. He didn't know. He didn't even know if he was on the right part of the beach.
"Look, Sonny, you're gonna have to be quieter, alright?"
The shiny Marshtomp's eyes went wide, and he looked up at the Corsola.
He blinked at Kai, his eyes no longer glazed over. A moment of clarity, and just in time. "I wouldn't have lied to you, but I had no choice. We was tellin' you the truth, up 'til the direction o' travel."
"You've met a young Goldeen 'round these parts, I'm guessing? Really high, sqeaky voice?"
Kaiyou nodded with a grimace, and the Corsola seemed to agree.
"She might not look like it, but she's older than I am, and I'm 73 years old." It continued, causing Kaiyou to be more than a little bit alarmed. "She's a right nasty piece of work. Thinks outsiders are unpure, or some righteous nonsense. She says they have to be destroyed at all costs, and she'll beat the crap out of anyone who crosses her wrong."
Kaiyou continued to nod, opening his mouth to reply, before a loud spashing noise cut him off entirely.
The massive Kingler emerged from the waves, eying him closely.
The injured Marshtomp flinched, crouching down close to the sand. He couldn't run on his busted heel, and he didn't want to flee, to transport himself back to the guild... Morana and Chronicler would never get the Phione Dew, then...
But the Kingler drew nearer... and stopped. It seemed to almost smile at him.
"This 'ere is Bernie. He doesn't speak much, but he's a right friendly old fellow. Known him since I was a babe." The old Corsola babbled, rocking back at forth in the sand next to Kaiyou.
"When I heard from little Jim about you nearing the surf, he was the one who tried to head you off, steer you clear of Theresa. That's the Goldeen we was talkin' 'bout, ya' see? But you threw him right 'round, must of tossed him twenty yards. He was rather deluded once he got back to me. Said there was a fighter, a young'un in the area. I knew he must'a b'n talkin' 'bout you, havin' met you m'self, but I was pretty surprised, to hear the tale he spun. Longer than my attention span, and that's sayin' somethin'."
Kai tilted his head, hoping dearly that the Corsola would eventually get to the point.
"Anyway, assumin' from the map bits we found all over, you ran into that old nut of a Slowking, right?"
Kaiyou frowned, growling deep in his throat. "He lied to me. He had me throw myself right into the current! There WAS no sandbar! I could have died!" He snapped angrily, and the Corsola nodded understandingly.
"He really is a nice fella, but he's a little bit.... errr.... lackin' in the brain cells, y'see. He got knocked in the head a few good times as a young'un, like yerself. Hasn't b'n right since. Can't tell up from right, and backward from left. His maps are always scewed somehow, so I can't say I can blame ye' fer bein' angry. Jus' know that he didn't mean teh set you on the wrong path, young'un. He meant well." The Corsola continued on, causing Kaiyou to hold his head in his hands, frustrated.
"Look, I appreciate the help and all, but I really have to get going... My friends, the Phione Dew..." He reminded the old local as politely as he could manage.
"Oh, ri', ri'." The old Corsola replied casually, waving his stubby leg. "You get on ol' Bernie 'ere, and he'll take ye' to the reef. He won't go in 'imself, 'cause o' the coral an' such, but he'll get you to there safe and such."
Kai nodded, accepting the helping claw that was offered to him. He clung tightly to the Kingler's pinsir, feeling it lift him from the sand, and deposit him gently behind it's crown.
The Kingler was larger than usual, possibly around five feet, instead of the general four, but, if anything, that made it easier to hold onto. Kai himself was larger than normal, too, so it probably made carrying his bulk a little bit less challenging...
"Thanks, Bernie." He told the Kingler sincerely, and it blinked at him in response.
"Kiiiiiingler." It told him back. Kai tilted his head slightly. The Corsola hadn't been joking about the speech troubles...
"So, what about the crazy Goldeen chick? You can't just leave her running around like that; someone's going to get hurt!" He told the Corsola, hoping for the best. With Kingler as large and strong as the one he sat on, surely they had someone who could bring Theresa down?
The Water-type shook his head. "No one here has the guts of man-power to take her down, and well, you're a strong fella...." He paused, looking awkwardly at the Marshtomp.
Kaiyou frowned deeply. Well that made things a little bit trickier.
He felt a jolt of shock, suddenly realizing how expectantly the old Corsola was staring at him. "You want me to get rid of her, in exchange for the help." He accused, looking a little bit angry. He'd been thinking that this free ride was an apology, for leading him astray before. No such luck.
"Well, Son, I can't say that's not what I was hopin'..."
Kai sighed. "Look, if I run into her, I'll tear her apart myself, but I don't have the time to go searching for her. I have to get that Phione Dew as fast as possible. Is it a deal?" He offered the Corsola.
He felt a burst of relief as the pink Pokemon paused, nodding firmly. "It's a deal, Son. Now Bernie, you keep that young'un outta trouble, y'hear? He's an important friend o' ours, alright?"
The Kingler let out another primal response, unable to speak, and scuttled off toward the water, with Kai clinging tightly to it's back. All he could think about was how grateful he was to not have to swim or walk for a while.
Still sitting on top of Bernie's shell, Kai held his ankle in the air, examining it closely. It had definitely taken a few hard hits so far, and it didn't look like it would be an easy task to take down Theresa with his leg messed up as it was. Hopefully he wouldn't be running into her scaly skin anytime soon.
He tapped Bernie's shell politely. "Hey Bernie? Is there any seaweed there that I might be able to make use of?" He asked the giant crab carefully.
"Kiiiiiing!" Bernie replied happily, pulling up several strands of it with ease, his sharp claws tearing the thick, grass-like plant without trouble.
"Thanks, Bernie. You're a good guy." He informed him, having learned over the past twenty minutes that Bernie was a very sensitive crab. One had to be very nice to him, and keep his spirits up, or he'd slow, getting depressed and clumsy. Luckily for Kaiyou, the task of keeping the simple-minded beast was easy. All he needed was a few kind words to keep him happy with the world.
"Kiiiinnnngggg~" The Kingler sang delightfully, swimming along the surface at a reasonable speed.
Kai, now with an armload of seaweed, set to work rinsing them down with a Water Gun, trying to get the sand, salt, and silt from the leaves. It took a few extra minutes, but it made them clean enough to serve as a sort of binding for his ankle, and within five minutes, his leg was firmly secured, so that he could swim without trouble.
"How far are we from the reef, Bernie?" He asked the Kingler, who, again, wordlessly replied. His voice was happy, though, so Kai could assume it meant 'almost there', or something similar.
"Thanks." He told it again, tying the final knot on his ankle bindings.
Seaweed was surprisingly strong and flexible. He'd have to tell Luna about it sometime, to see if it could be used in the medical field at all.
A sudden halt had the Marshtomp nearly tumbling through the Kingler's crown, and Kai stood up, peering over the sharp spikes to see what had caused the hold-up. "Bernie? What's up?" He asked the crab.
"Kiiiiiiinglllllllerrrrrr~" It sang in response, waving a claw ahead of it.
Kai peered closely at the waves, smiling as he caught a glimpse of brightly-coloured coral through the surf. "Good job, Bernie!" He congratulated it happily, patting his shell.
Finally, after so long searching, he'd been able to find the reef. Now, all he had to do was find Phione.
"King, King!" Bernie told him, helping him down into the waves.
Kai gave the Kingler a swift salute, before diving under, and gasping at the cool, salty water. His gills spread wide, taking in water. Bubbles spilled out of his mouth as the air left his lungs, rising to the surface.
A moment later, Kai shoved his arm above the water, giving Bernie a thumbs up. The giant Kingler began to move off, heading a little further from the reef, and settling down in the sand.
He too, was now almost fully-submersed in water, his crown poking above the waves, happy as a Clamperl.
Kai chuckled to himself, and took off into the reef, diving around a patch of particularly stunning coral. It was sort of grass-like in appearance, and a bright, rich red in colour. He had to admit that it was pretty, even if it wasn't really his thing.
Luna and Zori would most likely have enjoyed it more than he.
Inhaling deeply to calm his nerves, the Marshtomp sped off through the reef, searching for any signs of Phione.
He swerved around a large chunk of coral, his eyes darting around warily. His sonar was picking up strange movements in the ocean currents, like the movements of a fish.
Though he couldn't be sure, he had a feeling it was Theresa. The Corsola had warned him of her, and he had a feeling that he'd been followed since he'd left Bernie's side on the other edge of the reef.
The elderly Goldeen, though young in voice and appearance, swam strangely. He hadn't noticed it before, but he was beginning to notice it now. The stiff movements in what was normally a very smooth, graceful motion.
She was nearing the end of her lifespan, and yet she maintained her false face as a young child, secretly pulling the strings of every local within her grasp. He had to feel sorry for the others that lived there.
He dove under another string of coral, pausing to examine the edge.
A single, shimmering orange scale rested on it's surface, glinting in the light, and sending horror rippling through him.
A sudden Water Pulse fired from above, his sonar picking it up just moments before it slammed into his body, and sending him spinning into the sandy bottom.
His arm swung 'round, Muddy Water flashing up in a massive jet toward the Goldeen above. The sand-filled current was strong and fast-paced, but the Goldeen had been waiting for it. She flitted to the side, easily dodging his blow.
Theresa's body begin to twirl, spinning faster and faster as she began to spiral down at him. Her body was surrounded by spinning waves, sucking at the water around her, and drawing it inward.
Kai kicked hard off the bottom, taking advantage of his position, and flinging himself to the side. Spinning his body around, he pounded his hindlegs into Theresa's side. His Low Kick caught true, sending her shooting hard into the sandy bottom several feet away.
She bounced off the ground, floating stunned in the water. He couldn't lose the opportunity for attack; it was too risky to waste. Thinking fast, he fired a powerful Hydro Pump at Theresa. The Goldeen, recovering slowly, was caught in the sudden jet of water, spinning off through the currents away from him.
However, she hadn't lived to such an old age by letting herself get pushed around. With a sudden flick of her fins, the old Goldeen shot forward, her Horn pointing straight for Kai.
The shiny, having had the time to think and react, flashed up a barrier to Protect himself. The Psychic barrier flashed up right in front of the fish Pokemon's face, but it didn't deter her for long. She altered her course, swerving around the barrier to come in from above.
Her horn began to glow an eerie green, and Kai knew he was in trouble. With a panicked cry, he struck upward with his fist, ice spiralling up his arm.
There was an earsplitting crack, and both Pokemon shrieked in pain, blood spurting into the water, and dying it red.
Kai cradled his throbbing arm, blood gushing from the wound on his hand.
His eyes narrowed with hatred, and his face contorted with fury, staring down the injured Goldeen that floated dazed in the water once more. Blood ran steadily from the hole in her forehead, where her horn had broken off entirely.
It was then that Kaiyou clued in, and swiftly pulled the deadly point from his fist, causing him to tremble in pain. That had NOT been a fun experience.
The water began to ripple around him, spinning and twisting in a tight spiral around Theresa.
The Goldeen's eyes opened in a flash, and she fired a weak Water Pulse, which Kai's Whirlpool promptly destroyed in it's path. He shot a mud shot at it, the water running a strange, brown-red with a mixture of sand, dirt, and blood.
He pulled it ever tighter around the Goldeen, until it spun tight around her body, moving so fast that he couldn't tell one end of her body from the other.
With a sharp cry of fury, the Marshtomp flung another Ice Punch through, the blood freezing as it left his hand, and freezing through the entire Whirlpool. The tightly-spinning funnel of filth and water exploded, sending Kai reeling back into the waves, where he floated, stunned and in pain.
Shimmering orange scales littered the sand.
"You've come a long way, traveler. Not many from the guilds would venture so far to see us." The Phione told him, dew beginning to swirl from it's body, and congregating in a small sphere between it's fins.
Kai nodded wordlessly, his eyes blinking rapidly to clear the sand from his eyes, looking a little bit weary. Where was he...? He could see strange, distorted blobs of colour. The reef. He must still be near the reef... ...Theresa.
His hand curled into a fist, sending a shot of pain spiralling up his arm.
He gasped in pain, releasing his grip.
"Yes, it has been many a year since we've seen the likes of you, traveler." Agreed the second Phione.
Phione... He couldn't help but feel incredibly lucky that he'd found two, instead of one. Now, he knew, that he'd at least have enough Phione Dew for the both of the Team Polaris girls...
"...I can't thank you enough..." He murmured drowsily, nodding his head like a bobblehead toy... What was he thanking them for, again? He couldn't really determine that, but it seemed like a good idea to thank them, anyway...
"No, no, traveler. We can't thank YOU enough!"
"Yes, yes, traveler. You've helped us greatly in your act of bravery against Theresa."
"She was hurting everyone, including herself."
"It's been a long time since her violent ways have done us an ounce of good."
The two Phione continued to chatter, pressing their energy into large bubbles of dew.
Finally, the two spheres seemed to harden, a thin film forming over their surfaces.
"There, traveler." The first Phione noted happily. "Your Phione Dew is ready!"
The second seemed to echo in the same, cheerful tone. "We wish your friends well, traveler."
"Yes indeed, we wish them well." The two Phione seemed quite pleased with themselves, delighted to have been of help.
"Th-thank you..." Kaiyou told them, cautiously taking the two orbs of Phione Dew in his hands, and holding them to his chest. How the hell had they known he needed them? He'd just woken up, and he'd barely gotten a word in since then... It made his head ache to think about it, and he just let it slide. Hopefully the Slowking or Corsola or something had told them. He just really didn't care at this point. He had the Dew, and that was all that mattered...
"They are just the right size to swallow, yes?" The first Phione noted.
"They will do the most good that way~" Sang the second.
Kaiyou just nodded, already beginning to tired of the chattery locals of the beach.
He needed to get out of here, and do so fast. He needed medical attention, before he bled to death, and Morana and Chronicler definitely needed the Dew at this point... It was time to leave the insanity behind; he had no doubts in this. He could only hope that he wasn't too late.
With a flash of his badge, he disappeared, bubbles floating up to the surface from where he'd disappeared.
Pluto
The old Leafeon was waiting upon Kai's return. Pluto was worried about the fate of Team Polaris's members, and sighed with relief when he saw the Marshtomp arrive, holding two small orbs of what appeared to be simple water. He couldn't believe it worked; he had sent expeditions to obtain Phione Dew numerous times, all ending in failure. He had long ago given up on the idea of dealing with his sickness that way- especially considering that for him it would only be a temporary solution. No amount of magic and healing in the world could get rid of his natural frailness.
He frowned when he saw the Marshtomp's ankle, and shook his head. He had expected as much- those water were dangerous.
"Good job. Dew will take you to the hospital to get your leg checked and get the Phione Dew to Team Polaris." He told the Marshtomp, and a small white-and-green Chimecho hovered forward, quickly enacting a teleport before waiting for a response. Time was of the essence; rewards and other talk could be done later.
A day later two letters arrived for the Team, one with the official seal of the Guild on it, the other from Team Polaris.
The first letter was one issued by the Guild System, awarding Team Stormcloud with 3 mission points for their service to fellow Guildmembers, as well as a ticket for withdrawing 3,000 PD from the guild account.
The second letter was one from a member of Team Polaris. The script was flowy and formal, but the handwriting was shaky; small splotches of dried water smeared the ink in places.
We can not thank you enough for your help. Thank you for everything. Both Morana and Chronicler are recovering. They're going to make it. Thank you, thank you, so so much. You have our eternal gratitude. This is a little something from our shop that you might find useful. And please, if you need anything from us, just ask.
-Crown
Inside the envelope would be found a small necklace. The chain was silver, and the charm was what appeared to be a small orb of cracked clay that was much more sturdy than its appearance implied. Knowing what Second Chance sold, it would not be hard to figure out what the necklace was; a Terra Globe, which protected ground types from Grass-type attacks.
Later on that day three Pokemon showed up at the team's doorsteps. A familiar Kingler, the old Corsola, and...a ghastly? It had a high, squeaky annoying voice like a little child but Kai would probably know better than that. Especially when she mentions something about being too old to die. I blame Cysic for that last one.
Kaiyou
Kai held the delicate charm in his hands, his fingers running across the smooth glass, and peering inside at the soft, cracked clay within. Normally, he wasn't one for jewelery, but this was special.
He undid the clasp, holding it carefully up to the light once more. As Zori treasured her sooth globe, his terra globe was something that he would treasure. For the protection it gave him, and the soul within.
He wrapped the chain twice 'round his arm, to keep it holding tight, and he redid the clasp, letting the orb gently fall into place.
He tucked the letters away inside the drawer next to his bed, and rose to his feet. His ankle, heavily bandaged as it was, was slowly healing, as Morana and Chronicler healed from their troubles.
A knock at the door interrupted him, and he moved to answer it, slipping quietly into the hallway, and straight through the main room. His large, stubby-fingered hand closed around the doorknob, and he opened it wide, only to find a small orb of ghostly matter floating before him.
"You... You are strange." Came the voice, so soft it was barely audible, even to Kaiyou. A pair of ethereal eyes opened out of nowhere, fixating on his face. "Different." The Gastly moved closer, but Kai didn't flinch, meeting the voice with an even gaze. Her voice was still hi-pitched, and easily recognizable, but it had softened a great deal since her death. No longer harsh and screeching.
"You came to my home, and survived every test I put before you... No one has ever done that. All of the selfish, the greedy, the powerful; all who've come to take the dew that belongs to my people; they've never returned with anything but the scars on their backs. You came, and you returned with all that you had sought, destroying me in the process."
Kai closed his eyes in silence, until he felt ghostly tendrils lift his face once more, to meet the unseeing eyes of the Gastly in front of him.
"Why you? What makes you so special, that you could succeed, where I had failed?" Tears began to flow from the Gastly's eyes, slipping down her face, and disappearing into the air, before they could even touch the ground.
"Because a promise is more powerful than that, Theresa." Kaiyou told her quietly, reaching out to wipe her tears off her face. His hand merely slipped through her, and he let it drop to his side.
"Theresa, when I make a promise to someone, to protect them, to help them when no one else can, I don't take it lightly. Breaking a promise, to me, means that I'm not who I think I am, who I want to be. It changes who you are, whether you realize it or not."
The Marshtomp paused, tilting his head seriously as the Gastly reopened her eyes to look at him. She seemed a little bit confused by his words, but didn't interrupt.
"I went to the shore to save the life of someone I care about; someone of this guild. I owed that person a lot, even though all they taught me was to slow down. Battles aren't meant to be fought, they're meant to protect something. In the case of fighting you, I was protecting the promises I'd made, to Morana and Chronicler, to the Corsola who guided me to the reef. It wasn't something I could let myself down on."
The silence stretched on for a moment, and, finally, Theresa spoke. "My promise, long ago, was that I would protect my family, no matter what. It was a very long time ago, when I was just a child. I failed, and my family was lost..." Theresa told him, still watching the Marshtomp with wary eyes. "I continued to fight, even when the time came, that I was no longer needed. In that, I suppose you're right... In failing, in breaking my promise to those I loved, I changed..."
The Gastly bobbed slightly, looking firm in the decision Kai knew she was about to make. "But now, it is time that I change back." She smiled at him a little bit. "I have a new life to live, now. I can't let myself throw it away again..."
"Stranger, you know my name, yet I don't know yours."
"Kaiyou."
The Gastly smiled. "Kaiyou, then. I wish to go with you.I can't return to the reef, after all that I've done to hurt them, but I hope that I can start anew here... The only question left is, will you forgive me, and let me in?"
A ghostly tendril reached out, seeking Kaiyou's hand.
The Marshtomp hesitated for a moment, looking thoughtful, but reached out with his own, letting the curious tendril wrap around his finger.
"There's nothing to forgive, Theresa." He had taken her life away once, as someone had before him. She'd die forever, if he turned her away. Something told him that.... And despite how hard she'd tried to destroy him, he couldn't let her suffer like that.
She smiled back at him. "No; not Theresa. That name holds a lot of memories for me... but I have to let it go. I'll take a new name, to shed the life I'm leaving behind. Maisha."
Kai nodded. Her name was her own, as was the decision to change it. He slipped back inside the room, the newly rennamed Gastly following behind.
The door slid shut with a soft click.
{{ Thanks Cherry~ :3 I just sort of pretended that the other two weren't there at the time. He probably turned them away later. Fish-Ghost was more important at the time, anyway. }}
